Abstract:
This paper presents a proposal of a complex mechatronic system that enhances the effectivity of obtaining energy from renewable resources. The main focus is on the photovoltaic energy system, which obtains electricity from the conversion of solar radiation through photovoltaic crystalline silicon-based panels. The design of the complex mechatronic system consists of several steps. The structural design of the photovoltaic panel positioning unit in the form of a three-dimensional model is made in the selected modelling programming environment. Subsequently, a propulsion system is proposed for the designed structure, the functionality of which is verified in the programming environment Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems. The control system design using a programmable logical controller is also presented. The corresponding control algorithm is designed in the programming environment Step7 and covers the optimal positioning of photovoltaic panels. The developed application in the WinCC environment provides a visualization of the positioning control process. The conclusion is devoted to the assessment of the obtained results for the proposed complex mechatronic system for photovoltaic panel positioning in comparison with photovoltaic panels in fixed installation. The presented results were obtained by simulations.

Abstract Modern manufacturing systems consist of a sequence of robotic systems, such as robotic cells, which are widely used in the industry. As they become commonplace and play important roles in modern industrial production, efficient modelling and use of robotic cells become a necessity. Robotization brings many measurable benefits. It enables effective utilization of both human resources and the possessed machine park and thus contributing to the improvement of product quality and efficiency. Industrial robots not only increase the growth of productivity, by replacing man in monotonous works, requiring enormous, not achievable for human precision but above all ensure the accuracy and repeatability of the product quality. Appropriate design and modelling of robotic manufacturing systems are crucial in the efficient integration of work cell components and proper maintenance of robotic production systems. Therefore, new solutions for programming environments in industrial applications are sought which not only allow reprogramming of industrial robots but also enable the virtual design of new production lines, which in turn allows the faster introduction of higher quality products. This article presents the modelling and programming of robotic work cells in the Siemens Process Simulate environment.

The advancement of mechatronic enabling technologies and the mechatronic design approach has resulted in sophisticated mechatronic systems. Automated mechatronic systems are becoming more complicated and more intelligent. Mechanical systems that enable the next generation of manufacturing systems will have whole new features and capabilities as a result of these modifications. Even basic monitoring has grown into self-optimizing performance in these gadgets. With the addition of bio-mechatronics and micro-mechatronics, the application fields of mechatronics have expanded. Bio or microcontroller-based applications are the focus of this publication, which aids researchers in building and testing control systems. Design considerations for mechatronic systems are addressed in this work. In order to implement more complicated control algorithms in an industrial setting, new controller design tools are required. The early evaluation of designs and the support of critical design choices may be made possible via the use of modelling and simulation technologies.

Abstract:
The new approach to the problems of dynamic systems simulation is proposed. The analytical and imitation modelling of non‐linear complex dynamic systems which comprise simulation of continuous and discrete processes with constant and variable parameters, are investigated. The aggregate mathematical modelling scheme [1] and the method of control sequences for discrete systems specification and simulation are used as well as the dynamic mathematical modelling scheme for continuous process formalization and modelling. According to them the investigated systems are presented as the set of interacting piecewise linear aggregates, which can include processes described with differential equations. The above mentioned approach is used in developing software for the construction and research of the models. The modelling of the dynamic systems’ control is also analyzed and developed software for the dynamic systems’ simulation is presented. It is related to the proposed combined modelling methodology. The developed dynamical simulation system ADPRO (Automatic Differentiation PROgram) extends applicability of the system SIMAS (SIMulation of the Aggregate Systems) [2] with dynamical simulation means realized with APL2 (A Programming Language 2) and based on automatic differentiation [3]. The created model of service process and its control can be used as a base for other models of wide class complex dynamics’ systems [4], the parts of which are described with differential equations.

Abstract:
<span>The aim of this study is to design and develop an autonomous fire proof rescue robot. The robot is designed in such a way, that it can traverse through fire and hazardous situations. Further, it will sense and communicate information regarding these situations in real time with the server. The robot is fixed with multi-sensors and further, a driver circuit has been integrated for communication in these hazardous situations through Zigbee and a data acquisition system (DAQ). In mechanical design first, a 3D solid model is generated using Solid works software to understand the basic structure of robot which provides information regarding robotic platform, size and location of various components. The developed fire fighting robot is a predominately outdoor ground-based mobile robotic system with onboard subdual systems that can traverse autonomously in the hazardous environment. The robot is designed such that it can traverse into the fire and send information regarding the fire behaviour and also the images of the victim’s location by using a camera. Further, a mathematical model which describes the kinematics and dynamic behaviour of robot motion are done. V-REP is used to create the simulation of the robot in a fire simulated fire environment. Finally, for the path planning, various techniques are discussed such as V-REPs inbuilt path planning module, A*, Fuzzy logic and artificial potential fields.</span>

The move from single core and processor systems to multi-core and many-processors systemscomes with the requirement of implementing computations in a way that can utilizethese multiple units eciently. This task of writing ecient multi-threaded algorithmswill not be possible with out improving programming languages and compilers to providethe mechanisms to do so. Computer aided mathematical modeling and simulationis one of the most computationally intensive areas of computer science. Even simpli-ed models of physical systems can impose a considerable amount of computational loadon the processors at hand. Being able to take advantage of the potential computationpower provided by multi-core systems is vital in this area of application. This thesis triesto address how we can take advantage of the potential computation power provided bythese modern processors to improve the performance of simulations. The work presentsimprovements for the Modelica modeling language and the OpenModelica compiler. Two approaches of utilizing the computational power provided by modern multi-corearchitectures are presented in this thesis: Automatic and Explicit parallelization. Therst approach presents the process of extracting and utilizing potential parallelism fromequation systems in an automatic way with out any need for extra eort from the modelers/programmers side. The thesis explains improvements made to the OpenModelicacompiler and presents the accompanying task systems library for ecient representation,clustering, scheduling proling and executing complex equation/task systems with heavydependencies. The Explicit parallelization approach explains the process of utilizing parallelismwith the help of the modeler or programmer. New programming constructs havebeen introduced to the Modelica language in order to enable modelers write parallelizedcode. the OpenModelica compiler has been improved accordingly to recognize and utilizethe information from this new algorithmic constructs and generate parallel code toimprove the performance of computations.<br><p>The series name <em>Linköping Studies in Science and Technology Licentiate Thesis</em> is incorrect. Abstract:
Room models, currently used for controller tests, assume the room air to be perfectly mixed. A new room model is developed, assuming non-homogeneous room conditions and distinguishing between different sensor positions. From measurement in real test rooms and detailed CFD simulations, a list of convective phenomena is obtained that has to be considered in the development of a model for a room equipped with different HVAC systems. The zonal modelling approach that divides the room air into several sub-volumes is chosen, since it is able to represent the important convective phenomena imposed on the HVAC system. The convective room model is divided into two parts: a zonal model, representing the air at the occupant zone and a second model, providing the conditions at typical sensor positions. Using this approach, the comfort conditions at the occupant zone can be evaluated as well as the impact of different sensor positions. The model is validated for a test room equipped with different HVAC systems. Sensitivity analysis is carried out on the main parameters of the model. Performance assessment and energy consumption are then compared for different sensor positions in a room equipped with different HVAC systems. The results are also compared with those obtained when a well-mixed model is used. A main conclusion of these tests is, that the differences obtained, when changing the position of the controller's sensor, is a function of the HVAC system and controller type. The differences are generally small in terms of thermal comfort but significant in terms of overall energy consumption. For different HVAC systems the cases are listed, in which the use of a simplified model is not recommended. This PhD has been submitted in accordance to the conditions for attaining both the French and the German degree of a PhD, on a co-national basis, in the frame of a statement of the French government from January 18th, 1994. La gestion de la demande en chauffage des bâtiments raccordés à des réseaux de chaleur s'effectue classiquement au moyen d’une courbe de chauffe : lorsque la température extérieure chute, la température de départ de l’eau alimentant le circuit de chauffage interne est relevée. Ce mode de contrôle, appelé régulation par loi d’eau, présente des atouts en termes de simplicité et de robustesse, mais ne tient pas compte de l'inertie thermique du bâtiment et ne permet donc pas une modulation de sa demande. La modulation de la demande en chauffage se définit comme l'action de contrôle consistant à modifier de manière stratégique les conditions de confort thermique dans le cadre d’une optimisation énergétique et/ou économique. Il s’agit d’une brique essentielle du contrôle flexible qui envisage le déplacement des charges et l’effacement des pics pour une meilleure efficacité de production favorisant la pénétration des énergies renouvelables et de récupération.Ces travaux de thèse visent à développer une stratégie de contrôle prédictif et flexible de la demande en chauffage, applicable à grande échelle dans les réseaux de chaleur.Tout d'abord, un simulateur thermique dynamique de bâtiment résidentiel, équipé de radiateurs hydrauliques connectés à une sous-station de réseau de chaleur, est développé. Il permet de définir plusieurs cas d’études de bâtiments représentatifs du parc résidentiel français et constitue l’environnement expérimental virtuel de nos travaux de recherche. Ensuite, une méthodologie permettant d’obtenir un modèle orienté-contrôle et d’ordre réduit de bâtiment avec son système de chauffage est proposée. Elle commence par la définition de la structure du modèle en se basant sur des connaissances physiques, puis consiste en l'identification des paramètres par optimisation méta-heuristique à l'aide des données générées par le simulateur. L'approche d'identification paramétrique évalue la possibilité de réaliser cette tâche en ne s’appuyant que sur des données disponibles au niveau de la sous-station, notamment en s’interdisant d’utiliser des mesures de température intérieure au bâtiment, donnée à caractère personnel présumée indisponible à grande échelle pour des raisons techniques, économiques et juridiques. Enfin, la stratégie de contrôle prédictif est implémentée. Elle permet la planification de la température de départ de l'eau de chauffage en fonction des prévisions météorologiques et des prix de l’énergie. Le contrôleur flexible s’appuie sur un problème d’optimisation linéaire sous contraintes, selon le principe de l’horizon fuyant. Il incorpore les équations linéarisées du modèle d’ordre réduit et calcule le compromis optimal entre coûts énergétiques et inconfort thermique, le degré de flexibilité de la demande en chauffage étant défini par l’intermédiaire de paramètres de réglage dédiés<br>In District Heating Systems (DHSs), buildings Space-Heating (SH) demand management conventionally relies on a heating curve: when the outdoor temperature drops, the internal SH system supply water temperature is raised. This control mode, referred to as Weather-Compensation Control (WCC), offers widely recognized assets in terms of simplicity and robustness. However, WCC does not account for the building thermal inertia, and consequently, it does not allow modulation of its demand. SH demand modulation is the control action of strategically altering the indoor thermal comfort conditions within an energetic and/or economic optimization framework. It is a key measure in flexible demand control strategies, which seek loads shifting and peaks shaving to allow sustainable commitment of energy resources in favour of renewable power penetration and waste heat recovery.The work presented in this thesis aims at developing a flexible Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for SH demand, applicable at large scale in DHSs.Firstly, a thermal dynamic simulator of a residential building with a radiator SH circuit connected to a DHS substation is developed. It allows the definition of multiple case study buildings, well-representative of the french residential stock, and constitutes the virtual experimental environment for our research. Then, a methodology to obtain a control-oriented Reduced-Order Model (ROM) for the building and its SH system is proposed. It starts by defining the ROM structure based on physical knowledge, and proceeds to parameters identification by meta-heuristic optimization using data generated by the simulator. The parametric identification approach evaluates the possibility of carrying out this task by relying solely on data available at the substation level, refraining from using indoor temperature measurements, personal data assumed to be unavailable at large scale for technical, economic and legal reasons. Finally, MPC is implemented to schedule the SH supply water temperature as function of weather forecasts and energy price variations. The flexible controller is designed to solve a constrained linear optimization problem according to the receding horizon principle. It embeds the linearized ROM equations within the problem formulation and makes an optimal trade-off between energy consumption costs and thermal discomfort, the degree of flexibility to modulate SH demand being defined through dedicated tuning parameters

Abstract:
Integrating power electronic converters and nonlinear loads in current aviation power systems has increased harmonic distortion, threatening power quality. Shunt active power filters (SAPFs) can reduce these harmonics by injecting compensatory currents to negate load harmonics. While simple, proportional-integral (PI) controllers have limits in transient response, steady-state performance, and resistance to dynamic load situations and system parameter fluctuations. Advanced adaptive control algorithms optimize performance in real time by dynamically adjusting parameters. This chapter discusses adaptive notch filters, self-tuning filters, fuzzy logic controllers, and dynamic programming controllers, including their principles, design, and implementation. These adaptive algorithms outperform standard harmonic mitigation and DC-link voltage regulation methods in simulation and experimentation. The findings suggest that adaptive control methods can improve SAPF efficiency and reliability in aircraft power systems, paving the door for hybrid and intelligent control research.

In forest fire research, it is now accepted that computational simulation and databases have become essential components of the scientific process, in order to combine theory and experiments. Although computers and software tools play a crucial role in the conduct of forest fire science today, scientists lack adequate software engineering tools to ease the construction, maintenance and reusability of modelling and database software. Usually, scientific models are implemented using a general-purpose programming language, such as Fortran C or C++. But since this type of general-purpose language is not specifically customised for scientific modelling problems, the scientist is forced to translate scientific constructs into general-purpose programming constructs in order to implement the model. This “manual’’ translation process can be very complicated, labor-intensive and error-prone. Furthermore, the translation process obfuscates the original scientific intent behind the model, and buries important assumptions in the program code that should remain explicit. The resulting code is often complex and difficult to understand for anyone but the original developers.

Experimental tools have emerged as a promising alternative to animal research in pharmacology. With growing ethical concerns and regulatory restrictions surrounding animal experimentation, researchers are increasingly turning towards in vitro and in silico methods to develop new drugs and evaluate their safety and efficacy. In vitro tools include cell culture systems, 3D organoid models, and microfluidic devices replicating complex physiological conditions, such as the blood-brain barrier or the liver microenvironment. These systems can provide more accurate and predictive results than animal models, reducing ethical concerns and experimental costs. In silico methods, such as computer modelling, simulation, and artificial intelligence, enable researchers to predict the drug-target interactions, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of new drugs without animal testing. Experimental tools have several advantages over animal research, including more accurate and predictive results, lower costs, higher throughput, and reduced ethical concerns. However, the limitations of these tools must also be acknowledged, such as the inability to fully replicate the complexity of a living organism, which requires further validation. These tools offer a promising avenue for advancing pharmacological research while reducing the reliance on animal experimentation. In conclusion, experimental tools provide an excellent alternative to animal research in pharmacology to identify and avoid potential toxicities early in the drug discovery process and have the potential to revolutionize drug discovery and development. This chapter mainly focuses on the numerous in vitro, in silico, non-animal in vivo, and emerging experimental tools and their regulatory perspectives on validation, acceptance, and implementation of the alternative methods used in pharmacological research.

Production systems of the future may be in constant flux and reconfiguration, continuously adapting to changing production conditions. Digital models and simulation are powerful tools that can be used for their design and operation. These models must co-evolve with the physical system to sustain their usefulness and relevance. This poses a significant barrier, given the complexities involved in their efficient creation and maintenance. To understand whether certain system design concepts make the simulation process easier, this study aims to investigate a combination of concepts that promote reconfigurability and flexibility to explore whether they can positively influence the simulation process. By integrating modularization, interface standardization, and a service-oriented architecture it is believed to support faster and easier creation and updates of digital models. Modularization enhances flexibility by decomposing complex systems into independent, interchangeable modules. Standardizing interfaces ensures uniformity and compatibility among modules. Using a service-oriented architecture entails the encapsulation of various functionalities within modules as services, which can be dynamically requested. Shedding light on the advantages arising from modeling and simulating systems adhering to the mentioned concepts the research also aims to lay the groundwork for further investigation into the potential synergies of these promising production concepts. The study’s methodology includes modeling and programming of industrial robotic production modules adhering to predefined physical and logical interfaces. Interoperability and service orchestration are achieved through a service-oriented architecture. A simulated Manufacturing Execution System is integrated to facilitate handling of module services, product data and service requirements. Finally, a specialized software plugin was developed to support rapid module instantiation into a production system for evaluation. Results suggest that using a modular approach may ease modelling and simulation efforts and could be supported further by developing tailored tools for rapid system development.

Abstract Undergraduate control courses are usually significantly improved when in-class instruction is backed up with experiments aimed at providing the students an opportunity of experiential learning. The rapid development of computer multimedia technology has resulted in a tendency toward a hands-on laboratory that incorporates simulation tools and computer-controlled equipment. However, most of the open-source hardware prototyping platforms require programming environments, installation of additional software, and additional plug-in modules that hinders the large-scale deployment of such systems. Therefore, the goal of this project was to create a simple mechatronic system (the “Bi-Copter”) that uses broadly available components along with MATLAB computing environment, in order to demonstrate an experiment that can be adopted at any educational institution with access to MATLAB. The main part of the setup consists of two small dc electric motors attached to each side of the beam with the propellers. By controlling the motors, the angular position of the beam can be changed to a desired one. A circuit board utilizing a breadboard and off-the-shelf plug-in microcontroller connected to a serial-to-USB cable is used to control the motors. Unlike traditional controls experiments which start with a modelling task based on first principles, in this experiment a black-box model auto-regressive model with exogenous input (ARX) is used. Model parameters are obtained from open-loop experiment. The extracted model is then used to design a feedback controller and evaluate its performance. The bicopter system was tested with over 50 students coming from the courses “Design of Mechatronic Systems” and “System Identification” of the academic years 2020–2022. The activity lasts eight weeks including 6 home assignments. During this period students work in groups of two and learn how to program the micro-controllers, carry out the system identificaiton experiments, design and implement feedback controllers. The laboratory allows students to build models of various complexity. To provide laboratory experience to students with various levels of expertise, this lab makes use of the Control Systems and System Identification toolboxes of MATLAB. Both graduate and undergraduate students utilized the apparatus and completed the design tasks. The bi-copter project was tested in a Design of Mechatronic Systems course at the University of Arizona. Since mechanical engineering students typically lack formal training in system identification methods, the course includes a brief introduction of this topic. One of the main outcomes from their experiments is appreciation of the importance of selecting proper input test sequence and the sensitivity of the resulting model to the bandwidth and amplitude of the input test sequence.
