Full textAs part of flow simulations in porous medias, whose the exploitation of an oil reservoir especially depends on, using a suitable mesh to model the geological structures is essential. The underground complexity and the need to follow the preferential directions of the flow in the vicinity of the wells induce several geometrical constraints that need to be taken into account by an efficient mesh generation soft-ware of geological structures. In this perspective, an original hybrid approach has been pro-posed which combines different kinds of mesh, has been developped, first in 2D and then in 3D for simple cases. This mesh is composed of an hexahedral structured mesh which models the oil reservoir, a radial mesh around the well and an unstructured polyhedral mesh which provides the transition between both structured meshes. The work done during this PhD consists in a generalization of the methodology developed in 3D in order to be able to generate hybrid meshes inside oil reservoir grids with more complicated structures. Indeed, the mesh generation providing the transition needs geometrical constraints to be fulfilled, that are not found when the underground structure is too complicated, or if the oil reservoir grid has been generated following physical properties. Thus, a new methodology allowing the geo-metrical constraints to be fulfilled has been proposed. Techniques intended to optimize the mesh have been also developed in order to correct the defaults of the mesh caused by the first methodology so that it finally satisfies the finite volume simulation requirements

Full textTo target more profitable oil and gas deposits, the numerical simulation is of growing interest in the oil sector. In this context, two main types of applications are distinguished: reservoir engineering where geological models are defined as static and exploration for the simulation of hydrocarbons formation. The latter application requires dynamic basins models. For this type of simulation, mathematical and numerical modeling has been an important advance in recent years. However, the construction of meshes needed for the simulations is a difficult task in the case of complex and dynamic geometries. The difficulty is reflected by the characteristic of the domain to mesh, which is defined from the mechanics of granular media which are almost incompressible and heterogeneous environments. In addition, the seismic data represent non-implicit surfaces modeling volume blocks. In this context, we focus on Lagrangian hex-dominant mesh generation of basins with complex geometry. The desired mesh must contain a layer of almost hexahedral meshes between two horizons and conform to fault surfaces through these horizons. A novel methodology based on the construction of an unfolded space is introduced. The desired mesh is then seen as a constrained 3D grid in this novel space. Several mesh optimization techniques are also proposed

Full textThis study, theorical and numerical, deals with the reaction front propagation phenomena in real porous media containing a small amount of organic compound. In order to do this, we choose to use a microscopic point of view to take into account all mechanisms involved. So, a three-dimensional numerical code has been developed. Direct simulations were made to characterize the various regimes we can encounter, to give a whole set of local thermochemical conditions, and finally to manage parametric studies, where physical properties and composition of the media were changed. Finally, the last part of this study is devoted to the discussion of the results obtained and to the comparison of the two approaches, namely macro- and microscopic. This last part allows to discuss the validity of the homogenized description and to provide criterion for its application. We finish with an estimate of the coefficients involved in the upsacled description

Full textThis thesis presents an experimental and numerical (DNS 2D) study of natural convection flow induced by exchange between two superposed fluid compartments at different temperatures, through a thin horizontal aperture. Laser tomography visualisations reveal different flows : laminar, pseudo periodical for low Rayleigh number and chaotic for high Rayleigh number. An analysis of complex three-dimensional local exchange mechanisms is proposed. Direct numerical simulations give faithful mechanisms reproduction. Experimentally, net heat transfer quantification shows that characteristic length is independent of compartment's heights but is a complex function of thickness and diameter D, D remaining the main parameter. Numerical simulations confirm this result and give an exchange law proportional to RaD1/2

Full textIn this study, a new numerical approach called « Multilayer Leakage Model » has been developed for the efficient numerical simulation of the 3D flow by 2D multilayered shell elements in anisotropic multilayer preform with or without a distribution medium. The convergence of the developed approach has been demonstrated by a comparison with a 2D model in the xz plan. The efficiency of the multilayer leakage model versus the 3D model has been quantified. The advantage of the new numerical approach has been verified through industrial part simulations such as the optimization of distribution medium position in a Hi-Tape stiffener, the flow simulation of a boat in VARTM process and the flow analysis of a NCF laminate

Full textThe aim of this work is to characterize the influence of two kinds of obstacles, sills and macro-roughnesses, on the flow inside a vertical slot fishway (VSF) and the behavior of several species of fish. Another objective is to study a technical solution to allow the passage of small fish species, which take the form of flexible cylinders placed in the jet at the entrance of each pool of the VSF. A hydraulic characterization is made by experimental measurements of the water level in each pool with acoustic sensors and by measurements of three-dimensional velocity components with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). The data acquired by these measurements are then used to define a predictive law that takes into account the presence of sills or macro-roughnesses, to help the design of devices that are as efficient as possible. Unsteady RANS and LES three-dimensional numerical simulations of the flow allow performing a careful volume analysis of the turbulence characteristics inside the pools when obstacles are presents in the flow. By obstructing a part of the slot, sills enhance the three-dimensionality of the flow while macro-roughnesses generate a low velocity layer and shelters for benthic species. Flexible elements produce a better dissipation of the energy of the jet and reduce the turbulent kinetic energy in a part of the volume of the pools. The effect of the modification of the flow kinematic properties, by the presence of obstacles, on the behavior of various fish species is evaluated. It provides important insights on how to adapt the flow in existing fishways to fish species with low swimming capacity

Full textCompound channels are characterized by a main channel and a floodplain. Their hydraulic behavior has important applications in rivers and flood control but also in sewer system management. Two approaches are followed in this study. The first one is an experimental study that aims to fulfill the lack of data concerning velocity distribution in narrow and deep compound channels. The experiments were carried out in a 16m long and 0.6m wide compound channel located in the experimental hall of ICube laboratory. The second approach is a numerical one. The objective of this study is to develop a methodology for numerical modelling of velocity distribution in compound channels. To do the experimental data of (Proust et al., 2013) were modelled compared to the experimental data in order to determine the most suitable model to reproduce velocity distribution. In addition to this comparison, the large eddy simulation method were also utilized for two experiments of (Proust et al., 2013) and (Nezu et al., 1990). Two specific boundary conditions were implemented in order to compare the efficiency of each method

Full textParallel to the scientific investigations on gamma radioactivity, technological research on gamma ray detectors have rapidly developed. Gamma ray imaging is changing towards systems using room temperature semiconductors, whose principal advantages are compactness and intrinsic materials performances, due to the direct conversion of the gamma rays into electric charges. In the research field, the available solutions are numerous, thus justifying numerical simulation. Modelling presents a double interest for technological improvement and fast development of new techniques. A fully three-dimensional model of a semiconductor gamma ray detector is presented. It takes into account the physical phenomena involved in the detection process and models the readout electronic response and noise. The model successively involves the finite element transient computation of the adjoint transport equation, the Monte Carlo simulation of the photon transport and the electronic signal processing including an accurate noise model. The simulation outputs are pulse height spectra and biparametric spectra (rise time versus pulse height). The validation carried out on each part of the simulator and also on the whole simulator confirms that the set of chosen models is correct and that our implementation is reliable

Full textThe thesis focuses on the two flows occurring in rowing, around the boat and the blade, and on interactions with theboat-oars-rower system. The first flow is unusual in hydrodynamics because of the large surge and secondary motions. The complexity of the second one comes from the unsteadiness and the free surface deformation. The goal is to set up efficient and accurate numerical methods to reproduce these flows and then to validate them for the purpose of analysis and optimisation of the performance in rowing. Those unsteady computations with free surface are cost lyin resources for RANS codes. A sub-cycling algorithm was developed and validated on several test cases, allowing to decrease the CPU time by a factor of 3 to 4, without loss of accuracy. It is compatible with mesh deformation and automatic grid refinement. Two experimental databases are exploited for each flow in order to validate the frame of simulation. For the flow around the blade, an in-situ campaign and a more controlled one conducted in laboratory, are used. In both cases, the profiles of the efforts are well captured, considering the cumulative uncertainties linked to the indirect measurement of the blade kinematics relative to the water. For the skiff in unsteady state, the fluctuating forces are well captured, in terms of amplitudes and phases, for typical frequencies. Unexpected errors (around10%) are observed for the mean value and remain unexplained for now. The structure of a co-simulation between the resolutions of the flows and the resolution of the dynamics of the multibody system is initiated

Full textThe unstable dynamics of a swirling jet flow is studied, including density variations within the flow. A direct numerical simulation method was developed to solve variable density Navier-Stokes equations, using an accurate and efficient pressure solver. Analitically, two unstable bi-dimensionnal modes are highlighted, and are identified as Couette-Taylor and Rayleigh-Taylor modes. A three-dimensionnal mode is also highlighted, wich is created by the shear. Numerical simulations show that those modes are nonlinearly persistant. Then, the spatio-temporal instability behaviour is studied numerically, and show that the instability undergoes to a convective/absolute transition with density ratio s and rotation rate q. This dynamic is also studied experiementally through different methods, and Global selfsustained modes are highlighted wich are in ggod agreement with numerical results. Finally, the vortex breakdown phenomenon is studied, and show the crucial role of real viscosity. Indeed, the vorticity intensification is relaxed through the viscosity effect, while it is not treating the truncated Euler Equations

Full textCombined sewer overflows (CSO) in a sewer system are the main source of pollution for the receiving environments during wet weather. The control of pollution flux discharges by CSO requires the study of hydraulics and pollutant transport, conveyed mostly as suspended particles. All experimental and numerical simulations have focused on hydrodynamics and the dispersion of particulate pollutants within side weirs at laboratory and field scales. The tridimensional flow is characterized by means of the water height, flowrate, velocity and turbulent kinetic energy fields. The particulate pollutant dispersion is studied by means of the mass distribution at laboratory scale and the BOD5 concentration and flux discharged at field scale. This study validated for the first time, to our knowledge, the 3D numerical approach based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applied to the case of a complex side weir subjected to regulatory self-monitoring using in situ data of water heights, upstream flows and discharged flows, collected by Valence Romans Agglo. The first campaigns show that the regulatory compliance criterion linked to the flow of pollution discharged in rainy weather is proving to be adapted to the functioning of the sewer system of the city of Valence. Indeed, the concentration of DBO5 discharged by the main CSO is lower than that measured at the entrance of the wastewater treatment plant. This work confirms the use of CFD and laboratory tests as operational tools allowing (i) to understand the hydrodynamic behaviour of CSO in wet weather, (ii) to implement self-monitoring and (iii) to analyse sewerage system compliance

Full textDeformation behaviour and failure of nickel foams are studied during loading by using X-ray microtomography. A detailed description of the 3D morphology is presented. Dimensions and orientation of each cell are determined. The geometrical aspect ratio is linked to the mechanical anisotropy of the foam. In tension, a uniaxial analytical model, based on elastoplastic strut bending, is developed. The whole stress-strain curve of the foam is predicted according to its specific weight and its anisotropy. The model is also extended to two-phase foams and the influence of the hollow struts is analysed. The two-phase foams model is finally applied to oxidized nickel foams and compared with experimental data. A phenomenological compressible continuum plasticity model is also proposed and identified in tension. The identification of the model is carried out using experimental strain maps obtained by a photomechanical technique. The multiaxial model is extended to a micromorphic one to incorporate non local features accounting for the size effects observed for small holes. The prediction of the model is evaluated in the case of subsequent fracture of the specimen through crack propagation
