The component processes specific to simultaneous interpreting and common to interpreting and listening were investigated. The live simultaneous interpreting of political discourse that news outlets offer has become an increasingly important means through which Arab audiences both shape their understanding of, and determine their reaction to, the West. Simultaneous interpretation (SI) is a special kind of translation where the interpreter listens to a speaker, processes the spoken (or signed) source language message and produces an equivalent output in a target language, i.e., the interpreter produces one part of the message in the target language while simultaneously listening to the next part of the message in the source language. This study aims to explore the difference in strategy use between self-taught and institutionally trained professional interpreters. Six participants, three institutionally-trained and three self-taught recruited and asked to interpret a 13-minute biology-themed TED Talk

Abstract:
Simultaneous interpretation is a cognitively demanding task involving concurrent listening and speaking in two languages. Successful performance in this task likely relies on a good working memory, which reflects a person’s ability to process and store information simultaneously. The present study used the theoretical construct of working memory to investigate the task of simultaneous interpretation. Twenty student interpreters at two different levels of training in interpreting and sixteen bilinguals with no training in interpreting, all of whom spoke Chinese as a first language and English a

Among the small number of researchers, Mazzetti (1999) pointed out phonemics (also known as “segmentals”) and prosody (also known as “suprasegmentals”) as two components underlying a given accent. In the TESL discipline, the distinction between these two components has been extensively discussed. Anderson-Hsieh, Johnson, and Koehler (1992) conducted a systematic compar

The findings of the study may also be applied to other language pairs, to the translation of subtitles, and to sign language interpreting. The empirical research on the benefit of sight translation practice toward simultaneous interpreting remains an area that is under-researched and under-discussed. There are three major skills in ST: translating according to the syntactic order, segmentation and coordination
