Abstract:

Abstract:
Pattaya is one of the most popular tourist destinations attracting international travelers. Given its uniquely cosmopolitan nature, it can be regarded as one of the most multilingual and multicultural areas, making it linguistically stand out from other big cities. This paper, therefore, aims to explore the linguistic landscape of Pattaya’s two main streets by analyzing the data (542 signs) collected from commercial signs. The results present the variation and dominance of the use of languages in those public spaces. By highlighting the differences among the various linguistic landscapes, it draws on the factors of business types and population dominance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Although adaptations characterize a number of changes during the process of translation from one medium to another, several of them can be considered as formal choices. By analyzing the 2005 motion picture Sin City, directed by Robert Rodriguez, adapted from the eponymous graphic novel by Frank Miller published in the early nineties, I compare the two works and go through the formal aspects that differ from one another storyline, script, visual, framing and sound to better understand the choices made. The concepts of adaptation and intermediality by Madalena Punzi (2007), Ilmeda Welehan (1999) and Adalbert Müller (2013) were used. Studies by Brian McFarlane (1996) also helped in the choice of methodological procedures adopted for the analysis. The comparison between the two versions is then done without restricting an attempt to map the possible (in)fidelities during the transposition process. Instead, I seek to identify the ways in which the narratives are related, as well as the part played in the production of meaning for the viewer and how the specificities of each medium film and comics have determined the final result.

Bergbom, Sofia, and Sandra Grenemark.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper engages in an initial exercise of re-imaging one of the most well-known—and most misperceived—cities on the planet. Las Vegas’ one-sided reputation will first be expanded into a series of binary pairings, and then the problematic friction between them will be highlighted. While a structuralist approach, the added dimensionality by these established polarities will reveal the fertile potential of their liminal gradients. As new identities materialize, important questions about the future of Las Vegas will begin to arise. A surprisingly contested and isolated urban condition in perpetual tension between diminishing water resources, vested capital interests, troubled sociological phenomena, expanding military operations, and delimiting natural preservation practices, Las Vegas is volunteered as a city ripe for further critical analysis and exploration.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper is an attempt to analyse and decode Le Corbusier’s application of his exceptionally singular and complex understanding of the order of the natural world in his urban masterpiece- Chandigarh City. It was Le Corbusier’s strong belief that architecture was a personal search for truth, a truth that was contained in the organic harmony of nature. He was convinced that with the advent of the machine in the 19th century, ties between man and nature had been severed. For the sake of the citizen’s physiological and psychological health, he felt it was essential that future cities focus on reconnecting man to nature through large green parks open to the sky, unpolluted by the machine. His own formative years in the lush forests of the Swiss countryside, sketching and abstracting natural forms helped him observe and internalise the inherent logic in their geometry. Over the years, a deeper study of mathematical proportions of the human body led Le Corbusier to propose the Modulor as a standard for the human scale in architecture. This only further cemented his belief that there was no separate natural order and man-made order; man was a part of nature and therefore a part of the natural order as well. However, it was the spiritual aspect of city planning that fascinated Le Corbusier the most. After a life long study of natural forms, he was fully convinced that this Spirit was hidden in the geometries of nature. To him, it was essential that the twentieth century city employ this spiritual order as a means restore harmony between man, nature and the cosmos. Abstract:
Abstract: The work of Le Corbusier is a comprehensive exploration of urban and architectural solutions which show continuity relationships between city and building, architecture and environment, interior and exterior space throughout elements of integration and / or mediation used by the Swiss master like ramps, lower volumes, incoming and outgoing, open floor plans and thick facades. The Association Millowners Building (1954) located in the city of Almedabad in India, and the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at the Graduate School of Design of Harvard (1961 to 1964) located in the city of Cambridge, in the United States, are two buildings that have some characteristics in common, like a basic volume, use of reinforced concrete, using similar facade elements and a projected ramp gives a recognizable and distinctive character of both buildings. Different authors compared the two buildings as Giedion 1967 or 1975 Frampton, and have stated that one has been based on the other. However, a comparative analysis verifies that although the ramp is the most obvious common element, it plays a very different role in the definition of urban relationships of each of the buildings with their immediate environment and the city. Moreover other elements configure crucial aspects in the relationship between the buildings and the urban space creating architectural solutions and interesting relations that are crucial for the definition of the relationship with the environment and the urban character of every building. Cunningham, Stuart, Marion McCutcheon, Greg Hearn, Mark David Ryan, and Christy Collis. Australian Cultural and Creative Activity: A Population and Hotspot Analysis: Gold Coast. Queensland University of Technology, August 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.203691.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gold Coast has one of the strongest and most resilient city brands in Australia. Monikers such as the ‘glitter strip’, ‘Sin City’, ‘Australia’s playground’ and ‘famous for fun’ have variously been applied to brand the Gold Coast, with its identity long touted as revolving around ‘sun, surf and sand’. Belinda McKay (2005, p. 68) observes that the Gold Coast is often seen as a place to escape to, ‘where new possibilities can be imagined and enacted’: this sense of escape from the ordinary remains a strong element of the Gold Coast’s place identity.

Ackermann, Leonie, and Khrystyna Demko. Projektbericht: Befragung der Zivilgesellschaft zu Geodaten in Bamberg. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-53254.

Full text
Abstract:

Colomb, Claire, and Tatiana Moreira de Souza. Regulating Short-Term Rentals: Platform-based property rentals in European cities: the policy debates. Property Research Trust, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.52915/kkkd3578.

Full text
Abstract:
Short-term rentals mediated by digital platforms have positive and negative impacts that are unevenly distributed among socio-economic groups and places. Detrimental impacts on the housing market and quality of life of long-term residents have been particular contentious in some cities. • In the 12 cities studied in the report (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome and Vienna), city governments have responded differently to the growth of short-term rentals. • The emerging local regulations of short-term rentals take multiple forms and exhibit various degrees of stringency, ranging from rare cases of laissez-faire to a few cases of partial prohibition or strict quantitative control. Most city governments have sought to find a middle-ground approach that differentiates between the professional rental of whole units and the occasional rental of one’s home/ primary residence. • The regulation of short-term rentals is contentious and highly politicised. Six broad categories of interest groups and non-state actors actively participate in the debates with contrasting positions: advocates of the ‘sharing’ or ‘collaborative’ economy; corporate platforms; professional organisatons of short-term rental operators; new associations of hosts or ‘home-sharers’; the hotel and hospitality industry; and residents’ associations/citizens’ movements. • All city governments face difficulties in implementing and enforcing the regulations, due to a lack of sufficient resources and to the absence of accurate and comprehensive data on individual hosts. That data is held by corporate platforms, which have generally not accepted to release it (with a few exceptions) nor to monitor the content of their listings against local rules. • The relationships between platforms and city governments have oscillated between collaboration and conflict. Effective implementation is impossible without the cooperation of platforms. • In the context of the European Union, the debate has taken a supranational dimension, as two pieces of EU law frame the possibility — and acceptable forms — of regulation of online platforms and of short-term rentals in EU member states: the 2000 E-Commerce Directive and the 2006 Services Directive. • For regulation to be effective, the EU legal framework should be revised to ensure platform account- ability and data disclosure. This would allow city (and other ti ers of) governments to effectively enforce the regulations that they deem appropriate. • Besides, national and regional governments, who often control the legislative framework that defines particular types of short-term rentals, need to give local governments the necessary tools to be able to exercise their ‘right to regulate’ in the name of public interest objectives.

Shannon, Caitlin S., and Beverly Winikoff. Misoprostol: An emerging technology for women's health—Report of a seminar. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh17.1002.

Full text
Abstract:
On May 7–8, 2001, the Population Council and the Center for Reproductive Health Research & Policy of the University of California, San Francisco, convened a technical seminar in New York City on the use of misoprostol for women’s health indications. The seminar was designed to provide a forum for researchers, providers, women’s health advocates, and educators to exchange information with the goal of advancing the potential of misoprostol to improve women’s health. Participants discussed the state of the art in research, examined current clinical use of misoprostol, and created strategies for the future. The first day focused on scientific and clinical aspects of misoprostol use. The second day’s discussion centered on the future of misoprostol for women’s health, including identifying priorities for research and the role of provider groups and women’s health and advocacy organizations in helping to ensure misoprostol’s continued, appropriate use. At the end of each session, the group had an opportunity to share ideas and discuss unanswered questions. This report covers the key issues raised by each speaker and highlights general areas of discussion among participants.
