Abstract:

Abstract:
Although adaptations characterize a number of changes during the process of translation from one medium to another, several of them can be considered as formal choices. By analyzing the 2005 motion picture Sin City, directed by Robert Rodriguez, adapted from the eponymous graphic novel by Frank Miller published in the early nineties, I compare the two works and go through the formal aspects that differ from one another storyline, script, visual, framing and sound to better understand the choices made. The concepts of adaptation and intermediality by Madalena Punzi (2007), Ilmeda Welehan (1999) and Adalbert Müller (2013) were used. Studies by Brian McFarlane (1996) also helped in the choice of methodological procedures adopted for the analysis. The comparison between the two versions is then done without restricting an attempt to map the possible (in)fidelities during the transposition process. Instead, I seek to identify the ways in which the narratives are related, as well as the part played in the production of meaning for the viewer and how the specificities of each medium film and comics have determined the final result.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The City of Morro Bay, California – Sign Ordinance Update and Embarcadero District Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan Erik Berg-Johansen This report includes a Draft Sign Ordinance, a Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan, and a background report for each product. The final products were created thought a process involving extensive research, community outreach, and detailed discussions among City of Morro Bay staff. The Sign Ordinance It was discovered that signs are important to business owners and residents due to their effect on both economic and aesthetic issues in communities. This report documents research of scholarly articles, case studies, and community outreach efforts. This report includes survey results and analysis that reveal the opinions of Morro Bay business owners, and also their ideas in regards to the sign ordinance update. According to many business owners, the current sign ordinance is convoluted, virtually unenforced, and unfairly applied. It was the goal of this project to hear what the community desires, and then apply this knowledge to a proposal that residents and business owners in Morro Bay approve of. The proposed sign ordinance aims to be fair and user-friendly, while ultimately enhancing community character and aesthetic quality in the future. Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan The Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan was created to promote tourism in the City of Morro Bay and negate the need for A-frame sign use in the Embarcadero District. The plan includes three alternatives that are intended to spur discussion among the Planning Commission when the proposal is presented. The background report associated with this plan is intended to provide the reasoning behind the proposals, and give readers of the plan background knowledge on directional signs in general. Similar to the sign ordinance background report, this report documents research of scholarly articles, case studies, and community outreach efforts.

Abstract:
The objective of this project is to design a direct potable reuse facility that is capable of supplementing drinking water sources to the city of San Diego, CA, while minimizing the amount of chemicals added throughout the process. The proposed facility is designed to accommodate 72 million gallons of wastewater per day and treat the influent using numerous pieces of equipment that remove particles based on particle diameter or mass. In addition to using filtration medium to remove particulates, aeration tanks containing activated sludge promote biological digestion while continuously stirred tank reactors irradiated with ultraviolet light and injected with hydrogen peroxide disinfect and oxidize biological and chemical constituents. The economic analysis estimates the proposed facility to cost $557 million dollars and have a lifetime of 25 years. Additionally, the net present value after the 25-year lifetime of the facility at an interest rate of 9% is - $2 billion. Due to the need of increasing the water supply for expanding populations and anticipation of future droughts, the proposed design is recommended for implementation. However, a pilot-plant or demonstration facility should be performed due to the sensitivity of the equipment in the facility to the influent water quality.

Zolfaghari, Atousa. "PLANNING FOR A COASTAL CITY: SAN CLEMENTE’S LOCAL COASTAL PROGRAM." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2013. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1034.

Full text
Abstract:
This professional project assesses current conditions and regulations within San Clemente’s Coastal Zone, and provides recommendations to the City and California Coastal Commission through a draft Land Use Plan. The amended Land Use Plan will be included in the certified Local Coastal Program, which will govern decisions that determine the short and long-term conservation and use of coastal resources within San Clemente’s Coastal Zone. Local Coastal Programs (LCPs) are planning guides used by local governments for development within the Coastal Zone. They contain goals and policies for development and protection of coastal resources throughout coastal cities and counties in California. LCPs identify appropriate locations for various land uses based on their goal of environmental and sustainable development and growth. Each LCP contains two components: a Land Use Plan (LUP) and an Implementation Plan (IP). Generally, the LUP contains the Coastal Element of the General Plan and provides the overall goals and policies that protect a City’s coastal resources. The IP is intended to implement the goals and policies in the City’s Land Use Plan and includes sections of the City’s Zoning Ordinance, and Specific Plans within the Coastal Zone. Although each LCP is unique to a coastal community, they all need to maintain statewide regulations through conformity with the Coastal Act requirements. After the California Coastal Commission (CCC) has approved an LCP, the coastal permitting authority over most new development is transferred to the local government, but the CCC retains permanent coastal permit jurisdiction over all proposed development on public trust lands, tidelands, and submerged lands. The CCC will also review and approve any amendments to previously certified LCPs.

An, Sharon Heera. "Healing and Reintegrating in the City: Urban Infill as a Sanctuary for Jane Doe." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99207.

Full text
Abstract:
The sex trafficking industry is not only a social justice issue, but also an architectural issue. In the same urban fabric where people live, work, and socialize, victims of commercial sex trafficking live in the shadows, work in obscure environments, and isolate themselves from others. National and local resources in mental care, job training, and legal support fail to provide a holistic place of refuge for these displaced individuals. Current shelters that specifically serve sexually exploited victims also face limitations in their presence in urban neighborhoods, long-term availability, and types of living arrangements. With a specific socioeconomic climate and disparity in San Francisco, Bayview presents itself as an opportune place to provide refuge for both survivors of sexual exploitation and the low-income community. Even as a distressed neighborhood, its ethnic diversity and existing infrastructure would create a foundation for survivors to heal and reintegrate into a resilient community. At an urban scale, ecological infrastructures provide environmental revitalization from rising sea levels and economic restoration of industries significant to the neighborhood's historical identity. The architectural intervention focuses specifically on female survivors of sexual exploitation, ranging from youth to mothers with children, and how they would heal together and reintegrate into the community. Hand stitching is an integral part of this project's design process. It is a drawing medium that reflects the physical engagement through a meditative activity. It is also a visual language used to formulate spatial sequences, patterns, and movement. The mixed-use urban infill weaves in sanctuaries to heal as an individual, as a camaraderie, and along with the greater community. Residents dwell in the permanently supported community housing, where they mend bodies, hearts, and relationships in the home. Other survivors are welcomed into the drop-in facility, which provides initial resources like hygienic care and counseling. Retail spaces along the main corridor are programmed to create a synergetic seam between residents and their opportunities to participate in the neighborhood. Interior and exterior thresholds throughout the building interlace the duality of veiled and transparent spaces. This cohesive spatial journey would bind wounds, foster resiliency into the urban ecosystem, and ultimately be reconciled to a dignified home, workplace, to social environment.
Master of Architecture
Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery. This inhumane industry is exacerbated in cities as more people move into the urban environment. In the same cities people live, work, and socialize, victims of commercial sex trafficking live in the shadows, work in obscure environments, and isolate themselves from others. Many sexually exploited victims receive limited care to recover from their physical, mental, and emotional wounds. Unfortunately, they are often grouped together with other displaced groups. This thesis calls out a specific group in need of healing, female survivors of sex trafficking, and considers a specific place where she can restore her sense of home, workplace, and community. The female survivor is given the name Jane Doe, and her unique narrative drives the types of spaces she needs to feel safe, loved, and cared for. The design proposal is sited in Bayview, an industrial urban neighborhood in southeastern San Francisco. The neighborhood at large is first reimagined to set a foundation for welcoming Jane Doe. Then, the proposed building integrates three types of spaces: a community housing, a drop-in center, and retail spaces with workshops. It is nestled amongst warehouses, houses, and other local shops. This thesis ultimately expresses the possibility architecture has in doing more than providing an inhabitable space. The architecture for Jane Doe is a sanctuary that plays a definitive role in healing her body, heart, and mind, as her sense of belonging is restored.

Abstract:
The Monitoring Program for all Inclusionary housing units in the City of San Luis Obispo is a needed component to the Affordable Housing Program. It ensures eligible households are occupying the affordable units and those that are renting are being charged according to the Affordable Housing Standards. Within the City’s Municipal Code it specifies monitoring and management of inclusionary units shall be done, however this hasn’t happened until now. This professional project provides a needed analysis of the current affordable housing stock. It examines multiple case studies that look at exemplary designed affordable housing units as well as implemented monitoring programs, which serve as a guide to the City of San Luis Obispo’s monitoring program. An extensive assessment survey was administered to all the inclusionary units within the City of San Luis Obispo that included some questions pertaining to the quality and design of the current units, location to local services, primary mode of transportation and miles traveled to work. The analysis of the survey responses were compiled into different analyzed categories: overall, senior, owner and renter. The analysis information and monitoring program procedures manual were completed as deliverables to the City of San Luis Obispo. The project concludes with recommendations for future affordable housing developments and toolkits, including the monitoring program procedures manual, to help with preservation of the current housing stock and ensure quality and sustainable affordable housing projects.

Abstract:
Analysis of the festivities of the Immaculate Conception celebrated in Lima in 1656, from the account written by Diego de León Pinelo Gutiérrez. This Creole text reinterprets in baroque terms the cult of the Immaculate Conception in the City of Kings. Through it we can study these lengthy festivals, which involved the participation of the city’s most important institutions and corporate bodies, mobilizing considerable resources and people. Thus, the text is conceived as a political and religious exaltation of the city of Lima, typical of the festive genre and of the chorographic literature, which also connects with the emerging Creole discourse.

Full text
Abstract:
Stormwater is the component of runoff that is generated by human activities, and has gradually become a key issue in achieving sustainability in urban environments. When vegetation and soils are replaced with roads and buildings, less rainwater infiltrates into the ground or is taken up by vegetation, and more becomes surface runoff. A greater area of impervious surfaces leads to increased stormwater runoff volume and velocity, and consequently increases the risk off looding and erosion. Being able to reduce stream flows and pollution of surface flows, green roofs are one technology that may help in alleviating this storm water crisis. This thesis developed a different and effective methodology for quantifying the effects of green roofs on stormwater runoff and calculating the runoff volume and rate for residential housing communities before and after applying green roofs. The method utilizes local climate data like rainfall and evapotranspiration rate, the water use properties of vegetation like crop coefficients of plants, and the areas of impervious surfaces; and then compares the different effects of green roofs in different locations having disparate climatic conditions. It was found that the best way to achieve zero runoff was to green a portion of the total rooftop area and disconnect all impervious surfaces. Implications of this methodology on city planning and site design and for future research are then discussed.

Anderson, Donald Nathan. "In Cisio Scribere: Labor, Knowledge, and Politics of Cabdriving in Mexico City and San Francisco." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/556879.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates cabdriving as a form of spatial work, involved in the production and reproduction of social space through three interrelated products: physical movement from place to place; the experience of movement, of connection made between places; and the articulation of these places, movements, and experiences with visions of society and the social. The particular forms of knowledge involved in this work, and the politics in which taxicabs are entangled, are explored through fieldwork conducted in two very different cities: Mexico City and San Francisco, California. The political context of cabdriving knowledge changes as new technologies are introduced into the cab to reframe the relationship between the interior of the cab (where passengers and drivers interact) and the exteriors (urban and informational spaces) through which it passes. In Mexico City, interviews with libre, base, and sitio cabdrivers about their knowledge and work strategies revealed three aspects of cabdriving as a rhythm analytical practice: 1) the points of confluence, i.e., the spatial pattern or method by which drivers link up with passengers; 2) the temporal and monetary patterns of constraint the occupation puts on drivers; and 3) the sense of the city which emerges, as this is described by drivers. Each form of taxicab has different patterns of movement, and different spatial and technological means of establishing contact with customers, which results in differing experiences and strategies elaborated by drivers. In San Francisco, interviews were conducted with taxi, limousine, and "ridesharing" drivers on the impact of smartphone-enabled "e-hailing" technology. The term allegorithm (the productive co-deployment of a socially relevant allegorical script and a software-mediated algorithm) is borrowed from gaming studies to describe how interfaces reframe the cab-riding experience. Of particular interest is the emergence of "ridesharing," or the overcab (a cab-riding experience which is superior to the experience of riding in a cab). The effectiveness of the overcab’s reframing project depends on the acceptance and performance by participants of the "overcab" narrative. There are indications that the transcendence of the overcab is fragile, and that cracks are developing in the experiences of both drivers and passengers, due to continuing tensions which the overcab has failed to resolve, or which have been introduced as part of its regulating mechanism.

Abstract:
The passage of AB 32 in 2006 initiated the need for city planners in California to consider the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions at the community level in order to develop policies and programs to reduce emissions in the future. Although local jurisdictions are not required to quantify and report emissions at this time, the AB 32 Climate Change Scoping Plan recommended a reduction goal for local governments of 15 percent below today’s levels by 2020 to ensure consistent reduction goals at the state and local levels. ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability initiated the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign in 1993, which provides a framework for local governments to develop a baseline emissions inventory and identify reduction measures as part of a climate action plan. This inventory is developed under the framework of the CCP campaign. A review of the current practice of local greenhouse gas emissions inventories in California identified significant consistencies across jurisdictions in the overall framework of community and municipal emissions inventories– due largely to the framework provided by the CCP campaign. However, data sources used and methods of measurement vary greatly among local inventories, which limit the ability to compare results. This highlights the need for a standard reporting protocol for community inventories. This baseline emissions inventory document provides the technical information necessary for the city to set reduction goals and facilitates the development of the climate action plan outlining policies and programs that when implemented would reach those goals.

Abstract:
Adding workforce housing to the City of San Luis Obispo Zoning Regulation is a needed component to successfully begin, and promote, the development of housing in the City to those making between 121 and 160% of the Area Median Income. This regulation would ensure eligible households are provided with housing choices within the community, preferably the community in which they work. The addition of Workforce Housing has been a large phenomenon throughout the State of California, and the County as a whole, as housing market prices increase and most salaries maintain at a steady rate. It is important to note that the State of California Housing and Community Development Department currently does not officially categorize workforce housing, effectively banning any funding, subsidy or mandatory incentive to be required by jurisdictions. This professional project provides initial step to the development of a workforce housing ordinance with the needed introductory research and outreach analysis of the current conditions facing our community with regards to workforce housing. It examines case studies of jurisdictions throughout the County who have taken the initial step to acknowledge workforce housing and create successful, and unsuccessful, programs which assist developers and community members with developing workforce housing. An extensive review of scholarly literature was 5 completed to understand the need of workforce housing in both an economic and health and safety need. Outreach was then conducted with local stakeholders to understand the range of barriers, opportunities and recommendations regarding workforce housing, and how City of San Luis Obispo policy could benefit or harm the community. The project concludes with the compilation and analysis of outreach and research to develop incentives and recommendations, found in the Recommendation Analysis, to overcome barriers of workforce housing and begin increasing the supply of quality workforce housing within San Luis Obispo.

Thesis, Paris Est, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PESC1229/document.

Full text
Abstract:
More than half of the world's population now lives in cities. This proportion is 77.5% in France. The high density of the urban population causes several environmental problems such as noise, urban heat waves, chemical pollution or magnetic pollution. In a city, the inhabitants could get all the information by the computer infrastructures and the information sharing between the citizens themselves. If one of the objectives of smart cities is to improve the management of resources - such as water and electricity - another is to be able to control day by day what is happening in the city in terms of climate and pollution by collecting local information and mapping it in the public portal of cartography. Although the link between civic services, the interactions between people and government institutions is very important, the concerned information, usually represented by graphics or maps, is not easy to for all people to understand and to interpret. Thus the objective of this thesis is to propose solutions to improve the representation of urban phenomena with their geographical context and at different levels of detail so that it becomes easy to understand for the general public. In order to facilitate the perception of a phenomenon map, we propose a representation at different levels of detail, from the most general to the most detailed and to adapt the graphic density to the level of detail (preparatory optimization in the database) and to the current visualization scale (dynamic and interactive optimization with the user); a various choices of the cartographic space, for example a phenomenon may be represented on the set of buildings or streets, or on any structure of geometry chosen by the user; simple and adaptive symbols to the phenomenon; and an automatic identification of particular zones: with extreme values, exceeding the threshold of dangerousness or with a large dispersion, this allows the user to quickly locate areas of interest throughout the visualization. We also proposed to add the concept of observer and adapt the visualization according to the position of the observer in order to reduce the superposition between the 3D presentations of different levels of height of a phenomenon, when it varies according to of the altitude (and that these data are available)

Abstract:
Background: Scientific articles has shown that patients that have had a stroke during their hospitalization receive lesser degree of care, than patients that has been admitted with a stroke. Literature has shown we need more knowledge how to improve stroke care to get a secure, knowledge based and effective stroke care in hospitals. Aim: The study aims to identify the events that have been critical in the management of hospitalized patients who suffer a stroke. Method: CIT has been used as a data collection method to bring in information, it has been used in the airforce and more recently has been used more widely in national healthcare. Qualitative contents analysis, according to Burnard (1996), gives basis for analyzing the material. The analysis was based on 10 interviews with nurses who have experience of patients diagnosed with stroke during hospitalization. Interviews were conducted at 5 (five) different departments within the Sahlgrenska Hospital in spring 2016. Result: Critical events occur in connection with care in all parts of the care of in-hospital patients who suffer a stroke. Overall categories: unexpected event, the safety of patients affected by department resources and the backside of specialist care. The categories identified in the micro, meso and macro systems are interacting between the different systems. Conclusion: Access to current measurements is important to get an overview of the current state of in-hospital stroke patients in the form of numbers and where they occur. The study shows that there is a great need for a well-functioning stroke chain for in-hospital stroke patients and that there are implemented projects in the US that could be helpful for future improvements in stroke care. It is also important to focus on communication and information to relatives.

Abstract:

The intent of this research is to reveal and understand the symbolic meanings of cultural and ethnic identity that cultural creators and receivers perceive through their involvement in mariachi. This study’s shows the way those involved in mariachi perceive their cultural and ethnic identity while living in a city that infuses Mexican and Texan cultural sensibilities. A mixed-method approach was taken between in-depth qualitative interviews and participant observation. Participant observation was utilized as a means to build a stratified snowball sample of the various cultural producers and receivers of mariachi. The cultivation of this sample was guided by Griswold’s cultural diamond framework. Reliance on semi-structured in-depth interviews as the primary research method of inquiry illuminated the various horizons of meaning that mariachi performers, instructors, gatekeepers, and aficionados held in regards to their efforts to preserve a long standing cultural musical art form in San Antonio, Texas. Some findings include various stories and perspectives on cultural and ethnic identity in mariachi, varying strategies undertaken to preserve mariachi music in the twenty-first century through technology, its institutionalization into a public-education setting, the varying gender dynamics among mariachi performers, the question of authenticity and hybridization in mariachi music, and cultural politics in the mariachi music scene.

Abstract:
Abstract The Historical Influence of Railroads on Urban Development and Future Economic Potential in San Luis Obispo Adrianna L. Jordan Today the sound of a train passing through San Luis Obispo may be intermittent and faint, but persistent nonetheless, a reminder that the railroad (displaced eventually by the automobile and accompanying expansion of highways and road systems, and later by air connectivity) was a significant force in the development of the City of San Luis Obispo. The sound of railroads evokes a sentimental reminder of the past, but the railroad’s continued presence in the city, cutting through its urban fabric, raises intriguing questions as to what constructive role it can play in the evolving city economy. Can the railroad make a contribution to the new economy of the 21st Century? And if so, how? These questions are worth considering beyond nostalgia for a railroad-dominated past as we become more concerned, nationally and especially so in the State of California, about living sustainably. The aspiration to create communities that reduce dependence and expenditure on the automobile and the petroleum based economy that it represents has surfaced as an important goal, one that might enable us to live within our resource base. In this emerging context of heightened concern about integrating sustainability into current development, what role will, and might, the railroad play in shaping future developments and influencing land use? This work explores these questions by tracing the intertwined histories of transportation and land use in the City of San Luis Obispo from the 18th century Spanish mission era to the 19th century railroad era to the present-day automobile and air travel era. Although the heyday of rail as an economic driver in the city has come and gone, San Luis Obispo’s Railroad District, with the award-winning Railroad District Plan for its place-making guide, is poised for continued revitalization. Public and commercial entities such as the Amtrak Station, the Railroad Museum, the Park Hotel building and its restaurants, and the Railroad Square Channel Commercial Building anchor the district and serve as pulse points of activity for locals and tourists alike. In addition, the Railroad District’s excellent pedestrian and bicycle connectivity helps to link it with the rest of the city and channels people to it. Given the present concern over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from motor vehicles, rising fuel costs, shortages of oil, and the centralized land-use patterns popular in New Urbanism and required by SB 375, it is possible that the railroad, or some other form of fixed rail public transportation might once again become a preferred mode of long-distance transport to the major metropolitan areas south and north of the city and beyond.

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to grasp the creation of an image of a city, taking the case of waterfront cities where the presence of water becomes a sense of place. A phenomenological method was employed for investigating actual waterfront cities: Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. Although a single method has yet to be established for studying a sense of place, phenomenology was adopted because it deals with the relationship between an environment and the experience of that environment. This thesis found some common qualities between these cities in their fonns. These qualities seem to have a certain relationship to the creation of the images of these waterfront cities. This study also brought up the question of how to evaluate personal experiences phenomenologically. They are related to the basis of this thesis. This shows us the difficulty of practicing the phenomenology and the profundity of studying an image of a city. At the same time, it is a step for further study.

Abstract:
As demand for additional athletic fields continues to increase, the City of San Luis Obispo is struggling to meet the recreation needs of the community. This project evaluated the feasibility of a joint use partnerships with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the shared use of the University’s underutilized Sports Complex, and made recommendations of strategies to address the City’s recreation needs. This project reviewed current and professional academic literature on successful approaches to joint use partnerships; conducted case study analyses on two Cal Poly facilities; and worked with City and University officials to examine the issues associated with establishing joint use agreements between state universities and local municipalities. Because little research currently exists to inform joint use partnerships between these two entities, the opportunities for exploration are many. Of particular interest are the fields of local and state policy and financing methods.
