Abstract:

Abstract:
Pattaya is one of the most popular tourist destinations attracting international travelers. Given its uniquely cosmopolitan nature, it can be regarded as one of the most multilingual and multicultural areas, making it linguistically stand out from other big cities. This paper, therefore, aims to explore the linguistic landscape of Pattaya’s two main streets by analyzing the data (542 signs) collected from commercial signs. The results present the variation and dominance of the use of languages in those public spaces. By highlighting the differences among the various linguistic landscapes, it draws on the factors of business types and population dominance.

Abstract:The Universities’ Mission to Central Africa (UMCA) missionaries equated urbanity with moral contagion, to which those with slave status were especially vulnerable. To the former slaves who came into contact with the mission, the growing commercial center of Zanzibar, and the coastal cultures it was associated with, were not only enticing, but also crucial to social and economic mobility. The mission’s ex-slaves rarely enjoyed a special advantage though their connection to missionaries. Even for the missionaries’ most treasured dependents, the advantages were ambiguous. However, the mission did facilitate the making of strong cohorts and ease the transition to town living.

The aims of this paper are to describe the form of abolition of sin in the text of Siva Puraana, the comprehension of Hindus about Siva Puraana, as well as the perception of Hindus in Denpasar City about the abolition of sin in Siva Puraana. The word ‘sin’ in Hindu’s terminology is well known as ‘papa’ which appeared and derived from asubha karma (bad behavior) of a human. Siva Puraana describes a lot of short holy texts (sloka) and stories about the abolition of sin by doing a devotion to the God Siva or by listening and reading the Siva Puraana text scripture. This research location was in Vrata Vijaya Ashram. The result of research, in general, was informant declared that sin couldn’t be able to be wiped out, but the possible reason is equaling it by a good behaviour (subha karma), and also all the moral education in Siva Puraana should be understood and implemented in daily life, so human will be exempted from a sin.

Abstract:
The city of New York was a pioneer in the implementation of an urban control planning system that set in order a city that exceeds five million people in the early twentieth century. Such complex urban organism – invaluable until that moment – was the target for the most ambitious urban planning on a built city. This paper focuses on the study of this initial urban planning from 1916, which would set the basis, certainly some visionary yet others excessive, for the building of New York City throughout the 20th century. The Building Zone Resolution was created with two purposes: to solve the issues related to the human bundle in a limited space, the city of the present, and to aim a vision of the urban space in the forthcoming decades, the city of the future. The article is a compendium of ten short texts and one epilogue, which in combination with ten graphic documents, frame the corpus of this investigation. Thus, the reader will face a graphic essay composed by a series of brief chapters that highlight the beginning of the first vertical city in history.KEYWORDS: New York; Planning; Urban vision.

Public historians have much to offer in current and coming debates about sustainability. In Las Vegas, our struggles to contextualize our often-misunderstood place while training our students to take advantage of new opportunities require a little extra effort. We have to start by convincing people that our place has something to offer to serious discussions about sustainability, that Las Vegas is more than simply the example of what not to be. Public history research provides critical context about place and points to how even contested landscapes can offer models for sustainable public history practice.

Abstract:
Water shortage is one of the main factors limiting urban construction and development. Scientific forecasting of water consumption is an important approach for the rational allocation of water resources. Taking the hospitals in Wuhan City as an example and basing the analysis on the characteristics of actual water consumption, we proposed a modified grey GM (0, 1∣sin) model of oscillation sequence. Using the grey theory, the variable weight-strengthening buffer operator (VWSBO) was introduced into this model to weaken the interference of the disturbance term on the data sequence. The actual quarterly total water consumption data for hospitals in Wuhan City during the period from 2010 to 2012 were used to verify the effectiveness and practicality of this modified grey GM (0, 1∣sin) model in predicting water consumption. In terms of the model’s fitting performance, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the modified model was 3.77%, indicating a higher prediction accuracy than the traditional grey GM (0, 1∣sin) model of oscillation sequences. Therefore, the modified grey GM (0, 1∣sin) model we established in this study can provide a scientific reference for administrative departments to forecast water consumption.

Abstract:
This essay explores the ruins trope in representations of the turn–of–the-millennium Latin American city. Like Sabina Berman in her dramatic evocation of Mexico City, Latin American artists represent urban ruins as volatile locales of cultural and historical presences that conflict and resist banishment. This analysis of Berman's Muerte súbita (“Sudden Death”), first staged in 1988, draws on recent theoretical inquiries that highlight the ruin's nonlinear juxtaposition of time frames and its association with the underbelly of Western modernity's rationalist narratives of progress and with a forward–looking critical consciousness. I examine the play's work with ruins and the ghostly presences they harbor to evoke contentious social, cultural, and artistic presences in a disintegrating Mexico City landscape. In stirring up the debris of vanishing urban utopias, works such as Berman's play constitute critical refusals of closure and conjure up unresolved cultural debates vying for a hearing. They also link the ruins trope to constructive, nonutopian imaginings of a less ruinous future and to creative engagements with the urban terrain, however devastated, in search of something of value.

Abstract:
Abstract The myth of Babel (Genesis 11, Old Testament) is an early and pure example of using urbanity and globality as an evidence of hubris. The accurate analysis of this short text shows that rejection of urbanity is not the effect of a vague metaphor; rather, it is based on the observation that city-making represents the perfect expression of humanity’s capability for carrying out modest yet ambitious autonomous plans. The statement that urbanisation and the cooperation of all humans would be a sin is less easy to maintain today, but fresher libertarian or neonaturalist ideologies, replacing transcendence by immanence, have emerged and achieved a historical continuity with mainstream religious demands. Reluctance towards a possible emancipation through self-organised spatial arrangements continues to connect urban agency to a more general anti-societal and anti-human stance.

The work shows that the medieval Western European city was characterized by an extremely low sanitary condition, manifested in the absence of a sewerage system and water supply, in the absence of street paving, unsanitary conditions of houses and streets. The extremely low level of personal hygiene of the inhabitants of the medieval city, a high level of infant mortality, widespread alcoholism, and low life expectancy are shown. It was found that one of the leading reasons for the low sanitary state of medieval cities and the level of personal hygiene was the unbiblical teaching of the medieval church about the immortality of the soul, according to which the flesh needed constant mortification and neglect, and caring for it and the comfort of dwellings was considered a mortal sin.

Abstract:
A key issue in territorial studies in recent years has been the transition in urban governance from managerialism to entrepreneurialism. North American and European cities were pioneers in this transition, and Latin American metropolises adapted their postulates to a different reality. Middle-sized cities in the region seem to have copied the intervention models of the nearest metropolis, uncritically applying them to a context characterized by important urban and social deficiencies and low standards of urban governance. The result has been a transition from no management to urban entrepreneurialism. In the case of one middle-sized city, this model has generated “islands of investment” attractive to foreign capital without resolving such long-standing problems as poverty, inequality, underemployment, and scarcity.

Abstract:
Tommaso Campanella, in The City of the Sun, a utopian text written in 1602, transfers his political philosophy to fiction. A priest, named “Metaphysician” or “Hoh,” assisted by a triumvirate – Pon (Power), Sin (Wisdom) and Mor (Love) – governs a republic of wise men, in which religion and politics form a single unit. The Calabrian philosopher has always defended the union of all people under the aegis of a single monarch, who holds laic and ecclesiastical powers. Machiavelli defends the notion that it is men’s duty to build and to conduct state politics, and that only concrete reality can provide its characteristics and principles. On the other hand, Campanella believes that the precepts by which men must be ruled can be found in nature. Therefore, a community will be happier if it exists in a closer relationship with nature. The main purpose of this communication lies in an examination of The City of the Sun, considering these two points of view.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The recent introduction of irrigation around the site of Mashkan-shapir, together with the availability of high resolution satellite imagery, has resulted in the preservation of architectural traces which could not be recovered when the site was researched between 1987 and 1990. In spite of recent looting, these traces have allowed the identification of the location of the palace and the reconstruction of much of the street system of this city, including the connection points across the ancient canals. Moreover, the survey data recovered through past fieldwork can be related to these traces, allowing an understanding of the larger context for many of the activities at the site, especially burial and manufacturing. Together these data provide a detailed view of how an ancient Mesopotamian city was conceived—in this instance by Sin-iddinam, who transformed it from a small village to a large city by building the city wall.
