Abstract:
Lebesgue constant for Lagrange approximation at Sinc points will be examined. We introduce a new barycentric form for Lagrange approximation at Sinc points. Using Thiele’s algorithm we show that the Lebesgue constant grows logarithmically as the number of interpolation Sinc points increases. A comparison between the obtained upper bound of Lebesgue constant using Sinc points and other upper bounds for different set of points, like equidistant and Chebyshev points, is introduced.

Abstract:
The paper proposes a collocation method to solve bivariate elliptic partial differential equations. The method uses Lagrange approximation based on Sinc point collocations. The proposed approximation is collocating on non-equidistant interpolation points generated by conformal maps, called Sinc points. We prove the upper bound of the error for the bivariate Lagrange approximation at these Sinc points. Then we define a collocation algorithm using this approximation to solve elliptic PDEs. We verify the Poly-Sinc technique for different elliptic equations and compare the approximate solutions with exact solutions.

Abstract:
We propose a new method of adaptive piecewise approximation based on Sinc points for ordinary differential equations. The adaptive method is a piecewise collocation method which utilizes Poly-Sinc interpolation to reach a preset level of accuracy for the approximation. Our work extends the adaptive piecewise Poly-Sinc method to function approximation, for which we derived an a priori error estimate for our adaptive method and showed its exponential convergence in the number of iterations. In this work, we show the exponential convergence in the number of iterations of the a priori error estimate obtained from the piecewise collocation method, provided that a good estimate of the exact solution of the ordinary differential equation at the Sinc points exists. We use a statistical approach for partition refinement. The adaptive greedy piecewise Poly-Sinc algorithm is validated on regular and stiff ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:
For the purpose of solving elliptic partial differential equations, we suggest a new approach using an h-adaptive local discontinuous Galerkin approximation based on Sinc points. The adaptive approach, which uses Poly-Sinc interpolation to achieve a predetermined level of approximation accuracy, is a local discontinuous Galerkin method. We developed an a priori error estimate and demonstrated the exponential convergence of the Poly-Sinc-based discontinuous Galerkin technique, as well as the adaptive piecewise Poly-Sinc method, for function approximation and ordinary differential equations. In this paper, we demonstrate the exponential convergence in the number of iterations of the a priori error estimate derived for the local discontinuous Galerkin technique under the condition that a reliable estimate of the precise solution of the partial differential equation at the Sinc points exists. For the purpose of refining the computational domain, we employ a statistical strategy. The numerical results for elliptic PDEs with Dirichlet and mixed Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions are demonstrated to validate the adaptive greedy Poly-Sinc approach.

Abstract:
This paper gives an explicit construction of multivariate Lagrange interpolation at Sinc points. A nested operator formula for Lagrange interpolation over an $m$-dimensional region is introduced. For the nested Lagrange interpolation, a proof of the upper bound of the error is given showing that the error has an exponentially decaying behavior. For the uniform convergence the growth of the associated norms of the interpolation operator, i.e., the Lebesgue constant has to be taken into consideration. It turns out that this growth is of logarithmic nature $O((log n)^m)$. We compare the obtained Lebesgue constant bound with other well known bounds for Lebesgue constants using different set of points.

We have examined the Sinc Galerkin approximation to solve the single Poisson problem, and finally, to solve the Poisson problem, we will use the sinc collocation method and in this method, we will reach a linear system. By carefully choosing the length of the steps and the number of nodal points, we will solve this system with two methods, with the orthogonalization technique, a numerical approximation will be obtained. Its accuracy can be exponential and of order where is a transaction parameter and c are a constant independent of N. In the final part, we will give some numerical examples of single Poisson problems.

Abstract:
We propose a new partially coherent vortex source model in which the spatial correlation function is a sinc function on the difference from the q-th power of the coordinates of two points of the source field. The beam radiated by such source is termed the high-order sinc-correlated model vortex (SCMV) beam. We derived the propagating formula of the cross-spectral density (CSD) function for SCMV beams in atmospheric disturbances. On the basis of the derived analytical expression, the behavior of the spectral density of the SCMV beams propagating in free space and atmosphere turbulence was investigated under comparative analysis. The results show that the spectral densities of such beams exhibited interesting novel features, which were significantly different from those of the trivial vortex beams.

Abstract:
Comparative Analysis of Three Algorithms for Two-Channel Common Frequency Sinewave Parameter Estimation: Ellipse Fit, Seven Parameter Sine Fit and Spectral Sinc FitIn this paper, a comparison analysis of three different algorithms for the estimation of sine signal parameters in two-channel common frequency situations is presented. The relevance of this situation is clearly understood in multiple applications where the algorithms have been applied. They include impedance measurements, eddy currents testing, laser anemometry and radio receiver testing for example. The three algorithms belong to different categories because they are based on different approaches. The ellipse fit algorithm is a parametric fit based on the XY plot of the samples of both signals. The seven parameter sine fit algorithm is a least-squares algorithm based on the time domain fitting of a single tone sinewave model to the acquired samples. The spectral sinc fit performs a fitting in the frequency domain of the exact model of an acquired sinewave on the acquired spectrum. Multiple simulation situations and real measurements are included in the comparison to demonstrate the weaknesses and strong points of each algorithm.

Abstract:
In this work, we have studied a numerical scheme based on Sinc collocation method to solve a class of nonlinear singularly perturbed boundary value problems. The solution of the problems exhibit a boundary layer on the both sides or one side of the domain due to the presence of perturbation parameter ?. The Sinc method can control the oscillations in computed solutions at boundary layer regions naturally because the distribution of Sinc points is denser at near the boundaries. The convergence analysis is discussed and the method is shown to be an exponential convergent. The numerical results support the theoretical results and illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method compared with the results in the existing methods.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis addresses the problem of the calculation of the one point functions (1PF) in integrable two-dimensional quantum field theories. A method for their calculation has been developed in the context of the sine-Gordon Theory. The integrability of the model was used to build a basis of local operators to describe the six-vertex model. This basis, called fermionic, is interesting because the vacuum expectation values of its operators are expressed in terms of determinants and the fermionic structure can be extended to the continuous limit in order to characterize local operators in the CFT. In this thesis, we continue to work on this approach, aiming to generalize the fermionic basis to the supersymmetric sine-Gordon model (ssG). We derived scaling equations governing the thermodynamics of the ssG theory, reproducing the BLZ generating function. Then, we described the integrable structure of the ssG model using the fermion-current basis. We focused on the fermionic part and calculated its one point functions. These results were verified with a different approach based on the reflection relations

In the LTE-Advanced context, Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) communication appears as a promising technology to boost system throughput and to allow for an efficient Radio Resource Allocation (RRA). CoMP systems promise very high performance in terms of spectral efficiency and coverage benefits when perfect Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the transmitter. However, perfect CSI is difficult to obtain in CoMP systems due to an increased number of channel parameters to be estimated at the receiver and to be fed back to the transmitter. So, the performance of such systems is compromised when the CSI is not perfectly known during CoMP processing, which is an important problem to be addressed. Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) grouping algorithms are usually employed in order to find a suitable set of users for spatial multiplexing. The largest SDMA group is not always the best group in a given data transmission such that higher gains might be achieved by dynamically adjusting the SDMA group size. Besides, algorithms that balance the Signal to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) among different links might ensure a certain level of link quality and so provide a more reliable communication for the scheduled users. This master thesis provides system-level analyses for RRA algorithms that exploit coordination in the downlink of CoMP systems to implement adaptive resource reuse and so improve system throughput. Herein, RRA strategies which consider dynamic SDMA grouping, joint precoding and power allocation for SINR balancing are studied in CoMP systems assuming imperfect CSI in order to obtain a better approximation with regard to the real-world implementations. It is shown through system-level analyses that quite high throughput gains are achieved through intelligent RRA. In conclusion, the results show that Sequential Removal Algorithms (SRAs) and SINR balancing provide system spectral efficiency gains.

Abstract:
This research aims to analyze the critical points of the inverter-to-machine chain used in the actuation system of MEA. To analyze the critical points, it is necessary to investigate the Partial Discharge Inception Voltage (PDIV) of the printed circuit board (PCB, representative models of the high voltage part terminal part of the inverter) by considering the effects of aerospace conditions like pressure, temperature, and humidity. Also, the endurance tests of twisted pairs (TPs, representative models of the turn/turn insulation) at aerospace conditions is investigated. This is necessary to assess the life of the machine when it is stressed by repetitive square wave/sinusoidal AC voltages. These experiments help to find the proper way to design and qualify MEA actuators. In this research, the effect of AC voltages, space charges at DC, temperature, pressure, and converter waveforms have been analyzed on different PCB models. Results show that an increased temperature decreases the PDIV and a reduction of PDIV is observed also due to a reduction of pressure. It is also analyzed that space charges play an important role in the measurement of PDIV at DC. Finally, the effect of converter waveforms supplied by SiC is analyzed, where it is observed that there is an 8% increase of PDIV as compared to the PDIV in AC. After these entire tests, it is concluded that the HV terminal part is not critical in the sense of PD occurrence. After the inverter part, the behavior of turn/turn insulation when it is continuously stressed by repetitive square wave/ AC 50 kHz voltages above PDIV has been analyzed. The results obtained from both the supplies are compared with each other to understand the effect of supply type and frequency on the endurance, finally, the effect of humidity on the endurance of the twisted pairs has been analyzed. It is observed after all these endurance tests that the corona-resistant wire cannot endure PD for a long time in aerospace conditions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to understand the physical phenomena appearing close to the charge neutrality point in these monolayers. The first issue to overcome was that graphene is generally strongly doped with electrons due to the interaction with the substrate. The control of the Fermi level has been realised using the corona discharge method. The disorder amplitude has been evaluated in these structures by : (i) fitting the resistivity dependence curve of the Hall coefficient obtained at room temperature; (ii) fitting the temperature dependence of the Hall density for samples that were prepared near the charge neutrality point. All these analyses gave a disorder strength equal to (20 ± 10) meV. It is then shown that for samples with low hole doping, the Hall resistance exhibits an ambipolar behavior as a function of the magnetic field. This behavior is accompanied by the appearance of a local maximum in the longitudinal resistance. This behavior is been explained by a charge transfer model between regions of different doping in graphene. Nevertheless, the microscopic origin of these regions is poorly known. Finally, nonlocal measurements carried out on these samples showed the appearance of important nonlocal resistances which in some cases exceed the corresponding longitudinal resistances. The analysis of these results shows that the contribution of spin current and thermal effects on the occurrence of these nonlocal voltages is neglegible. In contrast, the experimental data are reproduced quite well by a model based on counter-propagating edge states backscattered by the bulk

Among aIl the well known polytypes ofihe silicon carbide (SiC), the cubic polytype (3C-SiC) is the only one that min be grown on silicon substrates. Abstract:
In this study, litho-, bio- and chronostratigraphic investigations combined with RTK GPSleveling have been carried out to reconstruct the paleoenvironment in the central part of theLånghundraleden Trail. The area displays four shallow lake basins of varyingmorphologies. The basins are now covered with peat as a result of infilling and overgrowth. The emergence of the saddle-point, i.e. the highest point of the underlying minerogenicsurface, was estimated to have occurred c. BC/AD. The isolation events of two basins, atc.12.4 and c.12.3 m a.s.l. west and east of the saddle-point, were dated to c.AD 20 andc.AD 30, respectively. By combining these isolation data with six previously investigatedbasins a shore displacement curve for the central part of the Långhundraleden Trail and thesurrounding area, i.e. east of the Ekoln basin was constructed. The curve indicates anaverage regressive shore displacement rate of c.6.2 mm/yr since c. 3200 BC. Around 1500BC, this trend was interrupted by a short period of retarded regression, correlated with theL4 event. The isolation ages of the basins in the Långhundraleden Trail appears relativelyyoung when compared to an average shore displacement rate of 5.6 mm/year in thenorthern part of L. Mälaren, west of the Ekoln basin. As the area is dominated by a fissurevalleylandscape, this discrepancy could be attributed to small-scale irregular tectonicmovements, which caused faster uplift rate, i.e. 6.2 mm/year, east of the Ekoln basin.

Abstract:
This project investigates the current borders around and within, what I have in this exegesis termed, "the Down Syndrome novel", using a close reading analysis of literary texts containing characters with Down syndrome and contextualised by theoretical works drawn from both disability and literary theory. This practice-led thesis introduces and discusses select fictional characters with Down syndrome from numerous genres, revealing them as highly contained, or "boundaried", spoken for, and generally used for narrative conflict rather than included as individuals with agency and a legitimate, autonomous voice and narrative point of view. In reframing the Australian landscape as "disabled" this exegesis illustrates that the Australian Gothic novel can shift, and sometimes even remove, the boundary around characters with intellectual disabilities, allowing a space where the stories of characters with Down syndrome can emerge.

Abstract:
The landscape of the Netherlands has been changing constantly since the end of the last ice age, some 11,700 years ago. Where we walk today was once a polar desert, a river delta or a shallow sea. The end of the last ice age marked the beginning of a new geological period - the Holocene, the relatively warm geological epoch in which we are still living today. The Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands contains special maps, supplemented by archaeological and historical information. These maps show the geographical situation for thirteen different points in time since the last ice age, based on tens of thousands of drill samples and the latest geological, soil and archaeological research. This magnificent atlas also paints a surprising picture of the position we humans have occupied in the landscape. It addresses such questions as: How did we take advantage of the opportunities offered by the landscape? And how did we mould the landscape to suit our own purposes? The Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands will change once and for all the way you look at the Dutch landscape.

Abstract:
T-625 Gökbey is a light utility helicopter developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries since 2013. For T-625, automatic flight control system performance evaluation and development test campaign was conducted. In this paper, test campaign is investigated thoroughly. To assess and quantify the automatic flight control system performance and handling qualities, various different metrics and specifications were selected. This metrics covered both time and frequency domains. After metric selection, a set of test points were created. Most of the test points required delicate piloting and were easy to fail. Furthermore, a large flight envelope in terms of altitude and air pseed was needed to be covered. Hence, both test point number and required flight time estimates were very large. Hence, to not further increase flight time and need of test point repetitions, various different precautions were taken, such as using computer generated sweeps. While conducting tests, altitude kept constant while speed envelope tested. Then, altitude were changed to a new value and speed envelope is tested again. After each sortie, flight data were analyzed whereas control parameter updates were performed after finishing tests for all airspeed values for an altitude. After control parameter updates, validation tests were done to ensure that updated parameters provided expected performance. At this point, most of the test campaign is done and selected specifications were met for almost all the tested flight envelope.

Abstract:
In this paper, we demonstrate a modified time of flight fiber optic sensor interferometer that provides global strain information for large-scale FRP strengthened structures with significantly increased strain sensitivity. With the originally continuous signals being reconstructed from the discretely sampled points using a sinc interpolation function, the sensing resolution of the interferometer is demonstrated to be significantly higher than through direct interrogation. To easily embed the FOS in structures and effectively increase the fiber sensing length, a commercially available prefabricated fiber ribbon is used. The results of bending tests of FRP beams with the embedded ribbon demonstrate the increase in strain sensitivity as well as no detectable loss in strength of the FRP plates due to the embedded fiber ribbons. Results from static loading test of a FRP strengthened beam with embedded fiber ribbons show the feasibility of this technique for self-monitoring FRP retrofits.

Abstract:
Learning is not always the goal of schooling. As policymakers around the world tackle the ongoing global “learning crisis,” it is important to understand the logics behind the design of education systems. Using a political settlements approach, this article documents the evolution of education policy and associated outcomes in Tanzania in tandem with shifts in elite perceptions of the goals of schooling. Tanzania has experienced four phases of political settlements, each of which encapsulated a different policy posture regarding the goal of schooling. The article also shows that electoral incentives are decidedly biased in favor of increasing access to schooling, even at the expense of quality. These findings advance our understanding of the politics of education policy and the persistent failures to invest in improving learning outcomes in many countries around the world.

Hall, Linnea, Peter Larramendy, Lena Lee, and Annie Little. Landbird monitoring 2020 annual report: Channel Islands National Park. National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2301088.

Full text
Abstract:
The National Park Service (NPS) began monitoring landbirds at Channel Islands National Park in 1993 as part of its long-term inventory and monitoring program. The park?s landbird monitoring later became part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Division?s Mediterranean Coast Network long-term monitoring programs. Consequently, landbird monitoring has been conducted in the park during every breeding season since 1993. In this report, we summarize data collected during the 2020 breeding season. Landbird monitoring was conducted between 1 April and 30 June 2020. Using distance-based sampling methods in a standardized protocol, birds were counted on 7 of 10 permanent line transects (70%) (2 of 3 on Santa Barbara Island, 1 of 1 on East Anacapa Island, and 4 of 5 on San Miguel Island). Two transects were not sampled in 2020 because of nesting California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) on Santa Barbara Island (i.e., Canyons Transect) and reduced person hours and unfavorable winds on San Miguel Island (i.e., San Miguel Hill Transect). For point counts, 225 of 338 (67%) permanent stations were counted (i.e., 30 of 33 points on Santa Barbara Island, 8 of 8 on East Anacapa Island, 100 of 112 on Santa Cruz Island, 40 of 40 on San Miguel Island, and 47 of 145 on Santa Rosa Island). The 8 Prisoners? Cove points were not counted in 2020. Three points were not counted on Santa Barbara Island due to nesting pelicans: these points and the transect were also not counted in 2016?2019 to avoid disturbing breeding pelicans. Other points (i.e., on east Santa Cruz Island and Santa Rosa Island) were not counted due in large part to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Traveling to and from the park was only granted to essential NPS staff for the majority of the landbird season. Fifty-one bird species were counted from points and transects across all of the islands in 2020; 39 of these are breeding species on the island. Parkwide, the 10 most commonly detected breeding landbirds in 2020 were, in descending order: Horned Lark, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Western Meadowlark, Orange-crowned Warbler, Bewick?s Wren, Island Scrub-Jay, House Finch, and Common Raven. On East Anacapa Island, 26 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 5 species were counted in 2020. No new transient species were detected in 2020; 10 transient or visiting species (nonbreeding, native species recorded only once or twice during surveys) have been counted on the island overall since 1993. On Santa Barbara Island, 49 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 15 species were counted in 2020. The highest number of Horned Lark since 1993 were counted in 2020 (n = 451). Warbling Vireo was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Barbara; 30 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Cruz Island, 74 landbird species have been counted since 2013; 34 species were counted in 2020. Bullock?s Oriole was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Cruz; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on this island since 2013. On San Miguel Island, 69 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 14 were counted in 2020. No transient species were counted in 2020; 34 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Rosa Island, 75 landbird species have been counted since 1994; 26 were detected in 2020. Rose-breasted Grosbeak was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Rosa Island; 30 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1994. Across all the 5 islands, 3 transient or visiting bird species were newly counted in 2020, for a total of 77 such species counted since NPS monitoring began on the islands. Nonnative and invasive birds were counted on only 1 of the 5 islands in 2020: 4 European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island. However, anecdotal sightings of nonnative species occurred much more frequently (i.e., outside of the point and transect counts), and were made on all islands except Anacapa in 2020. The highest numbers of nonnative species detections occurred on Santa Cruz Island, with 33 detections of Eurasian Collared Dove (primarily at the Main Ranch area in the Central Valley), 15 detections of Brown-headed Cowbird (primarily at Scorpion Harbor), and 15 detections of European Starling (primarily at the Main Ranch and Scorpion Harbor). House Sparrows were observed fewer times, but on all islands except Anacapa; cowbirds occurred on all islands except Anacapa and San Miguel; and Rock Pigeon occurred on Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Islands. In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 67% of all points and 77% of all transects were counted among the 5 islands. Santa Rosa received the lightest sampling of points (32%), due to the difficulty of getting observers onto the island. Even with diminished sampling, species richness (number of species) values fell in predictable patterns: richness was greatest on the larger islands (75 on Santa Rosa, 73 on Santa Cruz) and least on the smallest islands (26 on Anacapa, 48 on Santa Barbara). We continue to recommend that nonnative invasive species, such as European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island, be removed before their numbers become harder to manage. Also, because Distance analyses assist statistically with evaluations of trends, we continue to recommend that a trend analysis using program DISTANCE, or newer hierarchical distance analyses, should be used after the 2020 season to assess 5-year trends in breeding species? numbers following the 2015 trend analysis conducted by Coonan and Dye (2016).

Abstract:
The National Park Service (NPS) began monitoring landbirds at Channel Islands National Park in 1993 as part of its long-term inventory and monitoring program. The park’s landbird monitoring later became part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Division’s Mediterranean Coast Network long-term monitoring programs. Consequently, landbird monitoring has been conducted during every breeding season since 1993. In this report, we summarize data collected during the 2021 breeding season and we analyze trends in a select number of species. Landbird monitoring was conducted between 10 March and 22 May 2021. Using distance-based sampling methods in a standardized protocol, birds were counted on 334 of 338 permanent point count stations (99%) across the Channel Islands monitored for landbirds. These surveys were conducted at 29 of 33 points on Santa Barbara Island, 8 of 8 on East Anacapa Islet, 112 of 112 on Santa Cruz Island, 40 of 40 on San Miguel Island, and 145 of 145 on Santa Rosa Island. Four points on Santa Barbara Island were not counted due to nesting California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) and Western Gulls (Larus occidentalis); 3 of 4 points (i.e., 17, 19, and 20) were also not counted in 2016–2021 to avoid disturbing breeding pelicans. This was the first monitoring season that the permanent line transects on Santa Barbara, East Anacapa, and San Miguel Islands were not surveyed. During the 2021 monitoring season, Channel Islands National Park decided to stop using line transects and focus on point count stations only, based on an external review of the landbird monitoring program. Fifty-six bird species were counted at point count stations across all of the islands in 2021. Parkwide, 40 of these species are breeders in Channel Islands National Park. Parkwide, the 10 most detected breeding landbirds in 2021 were, in descending order: Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, Bewick’s Wren, Orange-crowned Warbler, House Finch, Western Meadowlark, Horned Lark, Common Raven, Island Scrub-Jay, and Pacific-slope Flycatcher (scientific names in Table 2 and Appendix A). On East Anacapa Islet, 26 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 7 species were counted in 2021. No new transient species were detected in 2021; 6 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island overall since 1993. On Santa Barbara Island, 50 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 13 species were counted in 2021. Lincoln’s Sparrow was a new transient species counted in 2021 on Santa Barbara; 23 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Cruz Island, 78 landbird species have been counted since 2013; 45 species were counted in 2021. Hermit Warbler, Lawrence’s Goldfinch and Warbling Vireo were new transient species counted in 2021 on Santa Cruz Island; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on this island since 2013. On San Miguel Island, 70 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 10 were counted in 2021. No transient species were counted in 2021; 32 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Rosa Island, 78 landbird species have been counted since 1994; 39 were detected in 2021. No new transient species were counted in 2021 on Santa Rosa; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1994. Nonnative and invasive birds were counted on only 1 of the 5 islands in 2021: 23 European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island. However, anecdotal sightings of nonnative species occurred more frequently (i.e., outside of survey times) on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands in 2021. The highest numbers of nonnative species detections occurred on Santa Rosa Island, with 25 detections of Eurasian Collared Dove (primarily at the Historic Ranch), 18 detections of European Starling (Historic Ranch), 2 detections of Brown-headed Cowbird, and 1 Rock Pigeon detection (Historic Ranch). Other species were not reported by Channel Islands National Park landbird monitors or in eBird in 2021. This was the first annual monitoring report since the Coonan and Dye (2016) trend report to incorporate density estimates for particular species across Channel Islands National Park. Parkwide, 13 species were analyzed using the Distance Package in R. Of the 13 species analyzed, 5 had either increasing or decreasing densities from 2016 to 2021. All park islands except for Santa Barbara had a species that showed an increasing or decreasing trend from 2016 to 2021. Horned Lark and House Finch on San Miguel Island were the only species to show decreasing trends from 2016 to 2021, which is opposite from the trend presented by Coonan and Dye (2016).

Abstract:
Key Points In almost all U.S. states, pregnancies reported as occurring at the right time or being wanted sooner than they occurred comprised the largest share of pregnancies in 2017, though proportions varied widely by state. The proportion of pregnancies that were wanted later or unwanted was higher in the South and Northeast than in other regions, and the proportion of pregnancies that occurred at the right time or were wanted sooner was higher in the West and Midwest. From 2012 to 2017, the wanted-later-or-unwanted pregnancy rate fell in the majority of states. However, no clear pattern emerged for any changes in the rate of pregnancies that were reported as wanted then or sooner or in the rate of those for which individuals expressed uncertainty.

Bukstein, Daniel, and Néstor Gandelman. Glass Ceiling in Research: Evidence from a National Program in Uruguay. Inter-American Development Bank, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011792.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents evidence that female researchers have 7.1 percentage points lower probability of being accepted into the largest national research support program in Uruguay than male researchers. They also have lower research productivity than their male counterparts. Differences in observable characteristics explain 4.9 of the 7.1 percentage point gap. The gender gap is wider at the higher ranks of the program consistent with the existence of a glass ceiling. The results are robust to issues of bidirectionality (impact of research productivity on the probability of accessing the program and impact of the program on research productivity), joint determination and correlation of variables (e.g. having a Ph.D., publishing, and tutoring), and initial productivity effects (positive results at early stages may have long-term effects on career development). The paper presents three hypotheses for the gender gap (an original sin in the organization of the system, biases in the composition of evaluation committees, and differences in field of concentration) and finds some evidence for each. Glass ceilings are stronger in the fields where women are overrepresented among the applicants to the system: medical sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. Finally, it presents a counterfactual distribution of the program in the absence of discriminatory treatment of women and discusses the economic costs of the gender gap.

Abstract:
Traffic signal performance measures based on connected vehicle (CV) trajectory data can provide practitioners actionable information on the operational state of their systems. A visualization framework that can enable agencies to quickly assess arterial-level performance by time-of-day (TOD) to identify challenges and opportunities has been recently developed. The framework provides information on four relevant signal performance measures over a corridor, including traditional Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) level of service (LOS), arrivals on green (AOG), split failures (SF), and downstream blockage (DSB). This document uses the proposed framework to provide 58 arterial-level performance reports analyzing 571 unique signalized intersections on 42 corridors in 14 different states. Results are estimated from over 18,000,000 vehicle trajectories and 328,000,000 GPS points. Since the reporting approach can provide up to 3,072 performance data points per intersection, this manuscript provides almost 2 million measures for all the analyzed locations.

Valenzuela, Ernesto, Thomas Hertel, Roman Keeney, and Jeff Reimer. Assessing Global CGE Model Validity Using Agricultural Price Volatility. GTAP Working Paper, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.wp32.

Full text
Abstract:
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models are commonly used for global agricultural market analysis. However, concerns are sometimes raised about the quality of their output since key parameters may not be econometrically estimated and little emphasis is generally given to model assessment. This article addresses the latter issue by developing an approach to validating CGE models based on the ability to reproduce observed price volatility in agricultural markets. We show how patterns in the deviations between model predictions and validation criteria can be used to identify the weak points of a model and guide development of improved specifications with firmer empirical foundations.

Green, John G., and Francis J. Miller. Examining the Effects of Precision Scheduled Railroading on Intercity Passenger and High-Speed Rail Service. Mineta Transportation Institute, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2022.2016.

Full text
Abstract:
More than just scheduling terminal-to-terminal trips for trains, “Precision Scheduled Railroading” (PSR) creates entire point-to-point trip plans for individual railroad shipments. Since precision execution was first put into practice, the benefits to shipment arrival reliability and to freight railroads’ profitability have been demonstrated by its use in several Class One freight railroads. However, the effects of the PSR operating strategy on passenger railway operations in shared freight/passenger corridors has not been studied in detail. This research examines the effects of PSR railroad operations on passenger railways, including measuring “Host Railroad Minutes of Delay per 10,000 Train-Miles” and “On-Time Performance” of individual passenger railways, both intercity and high-speed.

Roelen, Keetie, Md Shakil Ahmed, Kabita Chowdhury, et al. Social Protection Experiences of and Attitudes Towards New Urban Poor After Covid-19 in Bangladesh. Institute of Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2024.006.

Full text
Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic led to a large increase in poverty in Bangladesh, especially in urban areas. Rising food prices and high inflation rates further compounded already high levels of socioeconomic uncertainty. Social protection is vital to help mitigate the effects of crisis and make households more resilient to uncertainty. This paper provides insights into urban residents’ experiences of poverty and the support they received since the Covid-19 pandemic, and derives implications for social protection programming in urban Bangladesh. Using secondary longitudinal data collected since the start of the pandemic with new quantitative surveys and qualitative data collected in Kallyanpur, Dhaka and Shantinagar, Chittagong in March 2023, the study points to high levels of precarity; poverty’s toll on mental health; widespread stigmatisation and discrimination of residents of low-income neighbourhoods, and inadequate social protection support. It argues for the need to expand social protection in urban areas; counter area-based discrimination; ensure dignified delivery of assistance, and provide an integrated policy response.
