Abstract:
Mass media play a decisive role in distributing health knowledge and awareness about health diseases. Covid-19 has been measured as the most dangerous health hazard of the 21st century that has constituted social, environmental and financial perils for humanity, including the media outlets. However, the Pakistani newspaper industry was already witnessing a decline in its readership and coronavirus has further deteriorated the situation for journalists working in regional newspapers. The methodological design using indepth interviews seeks to discover the financial difficulties faced by journalists employed in local or regional newspapers in Hyderabad city of Sindh province, Pakistan. The distress of unpaid salaries, financial security and paid leave were recognized as dominant elements that emerged during the present investigation as the extension to studies conducted concerning health communication. Therefore, this research suggests that government and business tycoons should financially collaborate with each other to consider challenges encountered by journalists for the survival of the newspaper industry in Pakistan.

Abstract:
This study inspects the role of mass media in terms of spreading information related to agricultural activities in Hyderabad district (Sindh) Pakistan. It also aims to explore the most preferred medium of information among farmers. Three areas including Tando Jam, Hosri and Hatri are chosen from Hyderabad district. The total sample data collected through purposive sampling technique from 180 farmers, whereas 60 farmers are equally selected from each area. The study found a significant role of mass media in disseminating agricultural information. In mass media the most likely source is print media where the daily Kawish and the daily Ibrat are having more readership as compare to other newspapers. Moreover, the newspaper's contents help farmers to get latest information regarding agriculture activities. This study will help public and private institutions in policy making regarding agricultural awareness of farmers. It also helps the mass media stack holder to make policies related to audiences and contents publishing.

Abstract:
This work elaborates the semi-semantic part of speech annotation guidelines for the URDU.KON-TB treebank: an annotated corpus. A hierarchical annotation scheme was designed to label the part of speech and then applied on the corpus. This raw corpus was collected from the Urdu Wikipedia and the Jang newspaper and then annotated with the proposed semi-semantic part of speech labels. The corpus contains text of local & international news, social stories, sports, culture, finance, religion, traveling, etc. This exercise finally contributed a part of speech annotation to the URDU.KON-TB treebank. Twenty-two main part of speech categories are divided into subcategories, which conclude the morphological, and semantical information encoded in it. This article reports the annotation guidelines in major; however, it also briefs the development of the URDU.KON-TB treebank, which includes the raw corpus collection, designing & employment of annotation scheme and finally, its statistical evaluation and results. The guidelines presented as follows, will be useful for linguistic community to annotate the sentences not only for the national language Urdu but for the other indigenous languages like Punjab, Sindhi, Pashto, etc., as well.

"Adoption of Sustainable Agriculture Practices in Banana Farm Production: A Study from the Sindh Region of Pakistan." International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 17, no. 10 (May 25, 2020): 3714. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/ijerph17103714.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of socioeconomic and psychosocial factors in the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) in banana farm production. To this end, data from 300 randomly selected farm households from Pakistan were collected through a structured self-report questionnaire. Using logistic regression (LR) and structural equation modeling (SEM), socioeconomic and psychosocial effects were evaluated. The results show that economic status, watching agricultural training programs, newspaper and radio awareness campaigns, participation in extension programs, perceptions of sustainable agriculture and the feasibility of SAPs were significant factors in farmers’ adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. Also, consistent with the theory of planned behavior (TPB), all its dimensions (attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control) affected the adoption of SAPs. This finding highlights the importance of socioeconomic and psychosocial factors in promoting sustainable agricultural practice among banana production farmers. This is the first study which attempts to provide empirical evidence using a robust procedure (two models—LR and SEM). The practical implication is that, when socioeconomic and psychosocial factors are well supported by satisfactory policy measures, SAP adoption is more than likely, which eventually increases farmers’ adaptive capacity to the changing environment. Ultimately, this leads to sustainable banana production, which has great potential to contribute towards poverty eradication.

"Phenotype and Genetic Analysis of a Syndrome Caused by an Inactivating Mutation in the Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone Receptor: Dwarfism of Sindh1." Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 83, no. 11 (November 1, 1998): 4065–74. http://dx.doi.org/10.1210/jcem.83.11.5226.

Abstract:
We report, in detail, a new form of familial dwarfism, including its phenotypic features, hormonal profile, and molecular basis. Following a newspaper report of severe dwarfism in two villages in the province of Sindh, Pakistan, we organized an expedition to study its clinical, genetic, and molecular characteristics. We identified 18 dwarfs (15 male, 3 female), all members of a consanguineous kindred, ranging in age from newborn to 28 yr. Mean height was 7.2 sd below the norm, with mean adult heights of 130 cm for males and 113.5 cm for females. Body proportions and habitus were normal; but head circumference was 4.1 sd, and blood pressure approximately 3 sd below the norm. There was no dysmorphism, no microphallus, and no history of hypoglycemia. Serum GH did not respond to provocative stimuli (GHRH, l-dopa, or clonidine). Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-binding protein 3 were low (5.2 ± 2.0 ng/mL and 0.42 ± 0.13 μg/mL, respectively; mean ± sd) but rose normally with GH treatment. One affected, dwarfed couple had a son, demonstrating fertility in both sexes. Clinical and endocrinological evidence suggested isolated GH deficiency with a recessive inheritance pattern. The GH-N gene was found to be intact. Linkage analysis of microsatellite chromosomal markers near other candidate genes yielded a high LOD score (6.26) for the GHRH receptor (GHRH-R) locus. DNA sequencing revealed a nonsense mutation (Glu50→Stop) in the extracellular domain of the GHRH-R. This mutation predicts a severely truncated GHRH-R; it is identical to that recently reported in four patients from two other families. Inheritance is autosomal recessive (chromosome 7p) with a high degree of penetrance. Relatives heterozygous for the mutation had moderately decreased IGF-I levels and slightly blunted GH responses to GHRH and l-dopa, but they showed only minimal or no height deficit. This syndrome represents the human homologue of the little (lit/lit) mouse and closely resembles its phenotype. It demonstrates the absolute requirement of GHRH signaling for pituitary GH secretion and postnatal growth in humans, and its relatively minor (but discernible) biological importance in extrapituitary sites. The syndrome is distinct from other forms of GH deficiency with respect to microcephaly, asymptomatic hypotension, and absence of features such as facial dysplasia, significant truncal obesity, microphallus, or hypoglycemia. Its discovery raises the possibility of milder mutations in the GHRH-R gene as potential causes for partial GH insufficiency and idiopathic short stature.

Grewal, J. S. Master Tara Singh in the Akali Movement. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199467099.003.0005.

Abstract:
The newspaper Akali, started by the radical Sikh leaders in June 1920, articulated their concern for the liberation of Khalsa College, Amritsar, the historic gurdwaras, and eventually the whole country. On the announcement of direct action by the Akali volunteers to reconstruct the demolished wall of Gurdwara Rakabganj, it was quickly rebuilt by the government. The Punjab bureaucracy relinquished its control over the Khalsa College in favour of the moderate leaders of the Chief Khalsa Diwan. For the control of Darbar Sahib at Amritsar and other gurdwaras, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) was formed in November 1920 and the Shiromani Akali Dal was formed in December. The non-violent morchās launched by the SGPC in 1922–3 were eminently successful. Master Tara Singh emerged as one of the prominent Akali leaders and the best ideologue of the Akali Movement.

Abstract:
Native-language source materials shed much light on the nature of modern subaltern perception of India–China ‘connectedness’. They have, however, remained scantily used. In this context, this chapter provides an overview of ‘native voices’ available in Hindi and other languages in burgeoning local print media in the late nineteenth- to mid-twentieth-century north India. Published in popular books, journals, and newspapers, they present an alternative discourse and open up new vista in our comprehension of areas of India–China interactions. Examples of this may be seen in books in Hindi on China by Thakur Gadadhar Singh and Dr Mahendulal Garg, or in editorials and independent commentaries on various events in China by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Rabindranath Tagore, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, and many other contemporary native intellectuals. Demonstrating yearnings for unity and harmony, these writings provide context to explore various vicissitudes of ‘connectedness’ as well as sources to the contemporary invocations of common ideas of ‘Asian values’ and pan-Asianism.
