Abstract:
The market for single recordings, now on the 45 rpm format, was still huge in the 1950s. Songs from Broadway shows were immensely popular with commercial singers at the time, such as Perry Como, Dinah Shore, Peggy Lee, and Rosemary Clooney; their renditions often shot to the top of the pop charts for weeks on end. Often these songs were placed by music publishers with A&R (artists and repertory) divisions in advance of their appearance in the actual Broadway show, as a way to promote both song and show. The LP format had matured by the mid-1950s and artists such as Frank Sinatra and Ella F

Abstract Downtown, 1956–1965—the first volume of Sixties British Pop, Outside In—describes the rise of London’s music and recording industries through the stories of those who gave Britain a significant voice in transatlantic pop culture. After the domestic success of artists such as Lonnie Donegan, Cliff Richard, and Helen Shapiro, the Beatles led an international wave that included groups such as the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Animals and singers such as Petula Clark, Tom Jones, and Cilla Black. Supporting them, a community of musicians, producers, music directors, engineers, songwri

Independent rock, known as indie rock (rock independent of the major label corporations), is music dedicated to the art of rock: it's adventurous, eclectic, defiant, inventive, and restlessly creative. For over 40 years, indie bands have prided themselves on the back-breaking efforts of self-promotion, self-produced albums, homemade album cover art, and even, for the stalwart artist, self-run record labels.Encyclopedia of Indie Rockchronicles the history and development indie rock, providing students, scholars, and music fans with an extensive overview of the musical and cultural phenomenon. Abstract:
Drawn from a mosaic of influences, including folk, gospel, and blues, R&B represents both everything that came before and nothing that was heard before. This is the music that bridged the gap between audiences and helped, at the very height of racism in America, to dismantle racial barriers. So much of today's music is derived directly from the highly influential and critically important sounds of R&B that without it we would have never known the classic soul of the late '50s and '60s, the glory days of the genre. Similarly, rock n' roll as seen through the eyes of Bill Haley and Elvis

In Leaders of the Pack: Girl Groups of the 1960s and their Influence on Popular Culture musician and music historian Sean MacLeod surveys the hundreds of girl groups that appeared not only in the United States but also in Great Britain during the early 1960s. This study corrects the neglect of their critical contribution of popular music history by exploring the social and political climate from which the girl groups emerged and their effect, in turn, on local and national music and culture. MacLeod organizes his argument around seven leading girl groups: The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Ronet
