Cibotti, John P. "Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale: A Charismatic Authority and His Ideology." FIU Digital Commons, 2017. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3190.

Full text
Abstract:
Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s militant and masculinist discourses were embraced by Punjabi Sikhs because of his presence as a charismatic authority, a concept first developed by sociologist Max Weber to understand the conditions surrounding and personal qualities of a figure which attracts followers. The rebellion he led in Punjab resulted from his radical exploitation of issues concerning the Sikh community. Religion was wielded as a tool, legitimizing Sikh violence as commanded by the Gurus. Radical interpretations of Sikh scripture and folklore were initially preached to rural, less educated crowds. While his sermons brought out their frustrations with the government, his charisma allowed him to manipulate young men, his largest demographic of supporters, into embracing violence. This study analyzes Bhindranwale from the perspective of the people that supported him. By identifying multiple social factors through which to understand Bhindranwale’s reign, this study exhibits his importance in understanding Sikhism in Modern India.

Abstract:
The Kogut and Singh (1988) index is the most widely used construct to measure cultural distance in international business and management research. We show that this index is incorrectly specified and captures the squared cultural distance. This inaccuracy is problematic because it means that the empirical findings on the effects of cultural distance presented in different strands of international business research are likely to be misleading. We specify the correct form of the distance measure based on the Euclidean distance formula and demonstrate the implications of using the incorrectly specified Kogut and Singh (1988) index.

Jhaveri, Shanay. "The journey in my head : cosmopolitanism and Indian male self-portraiture in 20th century India : Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, Bhupen Khakhar, Ragubhir Singh." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2016. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/1808/.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1890 and 1948, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil (1870–1954) a philosopher, Sanskritist, Persianist and father of India’s greatest modernist painter Amrita Sher-Gil, produced a remarkable body of photographic self-portraits. The photographs, usually very small were always of himself in aristocratic-bourgeois settings, which ranged from Paris, Budapest, Simla and Lahore. These images prove to be the starting point for my own research into self-portraiture and a re-appraisal of the term ‘cosmopolitanism’. Central to my re-figuring of ‘cosmopolitanism’ is a refutation of the Kantian ideal of the self-identical, self-sufficient, immune and transcendental subject. I intend to map out how the term has been re-claimed and recalibrated by myriad postcolonial academics and scholars in contemporary critical and cultural theory. My own participation in the on-going re-evaluation of ‘cosmopolitanism’ is done through the detailed study of the lives and works of my three case studies: Sher-Gil, the painter Bhupen Khakhar (1934- 2003), and photographer Raghubir Singh (1942–1999). In my discussion of their respective oeuvres, place and location are foregrounded, taking into account physical movement, but more crucially modes of affiliation and belonging. In my research, a rethinking of ‘cosmopolitanism’ rests on the assertion that a ‘cosmopolitan self’ evolves from correspondences between disparate parties and places. Community, friendship, networks of affiliation and interpersonal exchange are critical to study and acknowledge. The other fundamental concern of this thesis is an emphasis on emotion, and emotional connections to spaces. Geography can and should be read as being populated by emotions, and the narratives of lives can be told through the emotional connections to certain places and spaces. With this research I do not wish to establish a definition or a model of a South Asian cosmopolitan or cosmopolitanism, which is a dangerous and limiting gesture. With the aid of Sher-Gil, Khakhar and Singh I hope to make apparent that for a cosmopolitan sensibility to be formed, physical travel, affluence, and privilege are not necessities. Neither is relinquishing an attachment to place or, inversely, claiming multiple attachments to places, but rather advocating for a recognition of the connection between space and emotion, and how the affects produced from these lived conditions and experiences are manifested, materialised and should be appreciated. Another aspect of this research project is an engagement with a mode of heuristic inquiry, where there is an emphasis on the researcher’s internal frame of reference, the researchers present. Thus, the temporal frame of the thesis produced by my selection of case studies, spans from India’s transition as a colony to an independent nation, but continuing on consciously to my own locatedness, at a moment when it is emerging as a global capitalist power led by a Hindu nationalist government. All of which prompts a continued consideration of the tension between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. It begs the question, how has and can one continue to arbitrate between local attachments and the world at large?

Atwal, Rajpreet. "Between the courts of Lahore and Windsor : Anglo-Indian relations and the re-making of royalty in the nineteenth century." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2017. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:8ac05e15-9293-4671-8cb1-76379f03508a.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the political and social worldview of British and Indian royalty during the nineteenth century. Rather than viewing them as mere 'ornamental' figureheads, it seeks to highlight and scrutinise the ideas held by monarchs (sovereign or deposed) about empire and the role of royalty, as well as considering how their attempts at implementing such ideas can complicate existing narratives about the relative influence and authority of this group. Above all, this thesis breaks new ground by adopting a transnational approach in its study of such royal ideas and endeavours. Ruling dynasties, monarchs and courts have long been part of an interconnected, if rarefied, world encompassing Europe and Asia, though this is not adequately reflected in the historiography on the nineteenth century. This is despite the ironic fact that in that century, many royal houses were brought closer together than ever before, through the impact of growing global empires, and advancing communications and transportation networks. The first direct meetings between British and Indian royalty took place during this period, in the early 1850s, and are closely examined here. Based on a core case-study of the longstanding relationship between the Punjabi and British dynasties of Maharajah Ranjit Singh and Queen Victoria, and using a wide variety of textual and material sources, this thesis captures royal perspectives of their status and role in an evolving world, alongside considering how British and Indian royalty directly or indirectly influenced one another. This study effectively de-centres the British imperial official as the primary agent in Anglo-Indian elite encounters, and goes further to demonstrate that whether in the case of the connections between royal personages, or in the ties between ‘monarchy, nation and empire’, the capability for royal agency to shape the nature of such relationships evolved over time and was a consistently contested matter.

Singh, Rajiv. "The relationship between strategic thinking and peak performance in branch banking / by Rajiv Singh." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4630.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken within the Branch Banking business unit of YY Bank, a major player in the South African financial services industry. Following the need to drive superior overall performance within branch banking, while creating an aspiration element for top managers who are career orientated, selected branches were grouped into the Associate model. The Associate model can be described as the formalisation of an 'owner–manager' model that empowers the Associate Manager through a defined mandate with broader or higher discretion relating to aspects of its operations. During the recruitment and selection process, it became evident that while candidates maintained a sound operational perspective of the business, their strategic thinking ability was in some instances, somewhat and in others, seriously lacking. The research objective of this study was to determine the relationship between strategic thinking and overall peak performance among Associate Managers. The Stratified Systems Theory (SST), composed by Elliott Jacques (1989) formed the basis and guiding principle of this study. The study constituted a dependant variable - the potential capability score (CPP) and four independent performance measurement variables. A literature study was pursued to establish the relevance of strategy and the contribution of strategic thinking towards overall performance. The view of Thompson Jr, Strickland & Gamble (2010: 17) holds that a strategy–focused business is more likely to be a strong bottom–line performer than a company whose management team does not take strategy–making responsibilities seriously. A further notion about strategic thinking is that it implies thinking 'outside the box' and it precedes strategy formulation. Another citation by Allio (2006: 4), points out that the prime objective of strategic thinking is to place the organisation in a competitive position. The study sample constituted all incumbents who were successfully appointed as Associate Managers. The results of a multivariate statistical analysis suggests no relationship between CPP and overall peak performance. Within the context of branch banking and Associate Managers, certain inherent factors point to this outcome - a key aspect being the largely operational nature of a bank branch. Despite the result and, taking into cognisance certain study limitations, we cannot conclude that strategic thinking does not contribute towards peak performance and recommendations are made for further explorative study. A decade of shifts within the industry has promoted an increase of new entrants. These banks are now, with the aid of technological advancement, becoming sophisticated in their product and service offerings and are able to target and penetrate complex markets. Clearly, competitiveness has heightened which, demands of Branch Banking and the Associate Manager, a new and refreshed perspective towards the business outlook. Associate Managers must now, to a greater degree, interact and adapt to ongoing changes in an increasingly complex and challenging market. This requires an integrated, holistic approach towards business planning and strategy execution. No longer can Associate Managers sustain profitable returns purely through an operational orientation but must adopt a balanced approach in their strategic insight, operational and risk management, resource management as well as strategy execution. For Branch Banking, it becomes increasingly necessary to develop and harness strategic thinking skills among individual managers which, in turn, will facilitate strategic insight and bode well for strategic planning. Further, the business unit should continue to apply the CPP assessment tool in the recruitment process - particularly for managerial appointments – in order to determine individuals' cognitive potential and identify skills development opportunities among incumbents. In an effort to encourage strategy formulation among Associate Managers, the responsibility for certain functional strategies (sales and service) should be decentralised thereby encouraging strategy formulation at local and branch level. Associate Managers have been generally good at executing strategy but the future, in all its possibilities, demands a certain level of strategic insight in order to enable a competitive positioning within the local market.

Full text
Abstract:
For a literary critic preparing a scholarly edition of a text like this within an epistème that disparages the theory underpinning it for being tainted with the gestural idealism of 1968 and the neon-glare of 1980s high postmodernism, the crucial question is how to reconcile the commitment to authenticity ingrained in historicist textual studies (perhaps the critic’s only viable disciplinary inheritance) with the author’s implicit antagonism to any such quietist approach. The encounter inevitably becomes a battle of wills. In the course of the current project, this theoretical struggle escalates exponentially as doubts concerning the authenticity (and indeed the existence) of both writer and manuscript are multiplied. If a thesis can be retrospectively extrapolated from this project, it is the argument that fiction is demonstrably a tractable forum for research in the Arts and Social Sciences: all the more tractable for its anti-authenticity. The critic’s loss is the novelist’s gain. Specifically, in this case, the faithful historian of late twentieth century literatures, languages and cultures can solve the key dilemma of the subject by working under the auspices of Creative Writing. Only in this way can justice be done to the most cogent intellectual trend of the posmodern period (perhaps its defining feature): one that revelled in its own pluralities, ambiguities and contradictions, and resisted all the unifying, teleological models of ‘history’ that had been implicated in the century’s terrible ‘final solutions’. In other words, only fiction can tell the history of a culture that rejects that history. If this means condoning forgery… so be it.
