Abstract:
Abstract When in 1664 the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb appointed a Rajput general, Mirza Raja Jai Singh Kachwaha, as commander-in-chief of a punitive army sent against the Maratha warlord Shivaji, contemporary authors recorded it dispassionately as a trivial occurrence. Emotional perception of the event had changed drastically by the early twentieth century, when the proponents of Hindu nationalism began to view Jai Singh with disgust and anger as a ‘traitor to the Hindu nation’. Analysis of ‘Letter of Maharaja Shivaji to Mirza Raja Jai Singh’ (‘Mahārāj Śivājī kā patr Mirzā Rājā Jai Siṅgh ke nām’), by the Hindi classic poet Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, discloses the communicative means employed by the author to ‘reboot’ the emotional attitudes of his readers and to rope them into the emotional community of Hindu nationalists.

Abstract:
On the morning of 6 April 1927, the Jemadar of the Sikh branch in the Shanghai Municipal Police, Buddha Singh, had been shot dead by an Indian nationalist. This incident has not drawn much attention from scholars studying modern Chinese history. This article argues that the narrative framework of the Chinese national history fails to provide a space for subjects such as Sikh migrants and nationalists that can hardly be appropriated. By exploring how the Ghadar Party, the Comintern and the Chinese communists cooperated with each other to shatter the British hegemony in Shanghai and how the British colonial authorities forged a coordinative network to check the ever-flowing dissidents, this article reconstructs the dramatic case of Buddha Singh not only in the milieu of the Chinese nationalist revolution, but also in the context of the global anti-imperial and communist movements. In so doing, it challenges the established national narrative and champions an approach that incorporates modern Chinese history into the global history.

Pinch, William R. "Who Killed Arjun Singh?" Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East 42, no. 2 (August 1, 2022): 370–80. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/1089201x-9987853.

Abstract:
Abstract In this essay William R. Pinch probes whether and how we might understand early Hindi poetry as a form of history, a theme that Allison Busch explored in a series of essays. His focus is on two late eighteenth-century poems that Allison, Dalpat Rajpurohit, and Pinch translated between 2009 and 2017, especially on the climactic event of the poems: the killing and beheading of the Rajput Arjun Singh by Anupgiri Gosain (a.k.a. Himmat Bahadur). In the course of the essay Pinch describes two visits to eastern Bundelkhand in search of traces of the events and personalities described in the poems. These journeys revealed convincing evidence, in the form of oral tradition, that Arjun was killed by his kinsmen (and not by Anupgiri). Though this necessarily complicates a straightforward reading of early Hindi poetry as history, it also prompts further reflection on why the poets depicted the killing of Arjun in the manner they did—and on the implications for the multilayered historical truth claims of Hindi poetry.

Abstract:
Okay. I have been asked to address the second question, which is whether conspiracy, terrorism, and hijacking can lawfully be tried by these law of war military commissions. Well, in 2006 and then again in 2009, Congress passed the Military Commissions Act, which defined these offenses as triable by a military commission. Two different presidents from two different parties signed those bills into law. And subsequently the D.C. Circuit sitting en banc upheld the conspiracy conviction by military commission of Ali Hamza Ahmad Suliman al-Bahlul, who had been known as bin Laden's media man. He had produced Al Qaeda recruitment videos and provided some support to the 9/11 hijackers in the run up to the operation.
