The University of Connecticut is focusing on cogeneration, also called combined heat and power. It is the production of more than one useful form of energy—both heat and electric power—from a single energy source, such as the burning of natural gas or some other fuel. The cogeneration plant has been designed to blend seamlessly into the campus landscape. Cogeneration uses one measure of gas twice—first for generating electricity, then to produce steam. A financial study done by consultants during the plant's planning phase shows definite savings over the long run, especially since the cost of

Abstract:
In the Anthropocene era, the global environmental crisis of mass species extinction and habitat loss poses a significant threat, intensified by climate change-induced events such as droughts, floods, heat stress, and extreme weather. India, with a projected mid-century population exceeding 1.5 billion, faces challenges to food, water, air, and ecological security, particularly in urban areas. Despite these pressures, India has demonstrated a noteworthy commitment to biodiversity conservation since Independence, embedded in its constitutional values.

Ten years since Za'atari refugee camp was established in Jordan's northern desert, it has evolved into the world's biggest Syrian refugee camp. The camp was set up as an emergency shelter; 10 years on, residents struggle to see a way out. This briefing note presents the perspectives of Syrian refugees on 10 years of life in Za'atari camp, their needs and their hopes, and it explores the impact of a series of external economic shocks on a community that has exhausted all safety nets. Finally, it offers recommendations to mitigate immediate vulnerabilities and facilitate durable solutions.

Abstract:
Approximately 300 Americans are estimated to have traveled or attempted to join the Islamic State (ISIS) as part of the group’s campaign in Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2019. These individuals joined more than 53,000 men, women, and minors from roughly 80 countries. Often referred to as foreign (terrorist) fighters (FTF), these are individuals from third countries who travel to join a terrorist group to support its activities. In the United States (U.S.) context, the FTF designation does not denote the act of fighting itself, but rather the support of a designated foreign terrorist organiza

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for more and higher quality data on pedestrian demand patterns for a number of applications in planning, transportation engineering, public health, and other areas. It is particularly desirable to better characterize the influence of daily, weekly, and annual variations; the impact of weather and special events; and the effects of changes in pedestrian phasing. This paper proposes and demonstrates a methodology for quantifying the relative demand for pedestrian service at a signalized intersection by using the percent of signal cycles per hour in which the pedestrian phase was

Abstract:
The border between Chad and Sudan has long been a turbulent space where conflict and violence in either country has often forced populations across the border to seek safety. Since April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan has forced large numbers of Sudanese civilians to flee their homes in search of safety. While all refugees share the need for emergency assistance, research has shown that women and girls encounter specific challenges accessing food and nutrition, sexual and reproductive healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene, and mat
