The aim of this thesis was to improve the understanding of microstructure in single crystal ferroelectrics. This was achieved through macroscopic testing of Lead Magnesium Niobate – Lead Titanate (PMN-PT) and microscopic observations of Barium Titanate (BT) single crystals. Multi-axial polarization rotation tests on PMN-PT showed a gradual increase in the change in dielectric displacement due to ferroelectric switching as the electric field is applied at increasing angles to the initial polarization direction. High-quality platelet single crystals of Tl₂Ba₂CuO₆±δ (Tl-2201) have been grown using a novel time-varying encapsulation scheme, minimizing the thallium oxide loss that has plagued other attempts and reducing cation substitution. Foram determinadas por meio de difração de raios x as estruturas de cinco compostos azaçúcares. Foram estudadas as interações envolvidas na formação das redes cristalinas em cada um dos compostos analisados. Foi encontrado que nos compostos azaçúcares estudados, as interações principais são as ligações de hidrogênio do tipo C-H···O e C-H···&pi;. The boronic acid functionality inter­acts via intra­molecular hydrogen bonds with the acetyl group and with the –B(OH)2 functionality of an adjacent mol­ecule. The resulting centrosymmetric dimer exhibits an anti-positioning of the ferrocenyl moieties towards the central B2O4 plane. Poly-aryl, also known as polyphenylene compounds are a class of dendrimer, which contain a large number of aromatic rings. They are of interest because they display restricted rotation of their stearically congested aromatic rings.
