The conchoidal transformation of Euclidean space are defined. Under certain constraints, they form an Abelian group, and their composition acts on a single straight line or plane. The vertices of limaçons with a common base lie on the straight line and the cissoid of Diocles, and the inflection points on a generalized piriform quartic. The composition of conchoidal transformations of the plane forms seven families of congruent triangles, or two limaçons with one base circle form two families of congruent parallelograms. The accuracy and stability of a single-end traveling wave fault locator directly depend on the correct construction of electrical network model in fault regime. In the regime of ground short circuits this task is complicated by the need to take into account the components of aerial and ground modes of power line in the electrical network of fault regime model. Its incorrect solution leads to a decrease in the accuracy of determining the arrival time of the used traveling wave, which, in turn, decreases the accuracy in calculating the distance to the fault. Many textbooks describe a balanced three-phase circuit by a single-phase equivalent representation. Confusion may arise amongst students regarding per-unit values of line-to-line voltages and phase voltages and, therefore, about the magnitudes of currents and powers. This paper proposes that students must first be taught symmetrical components based on power invariance transformation. A balanced three-phase circuit is to be described only in terms of positive sequence components. Whenever the data acquisition is restricted to line surveys rather than areal surveys, seismic processing is necessarily in two dimensions. In this paper it is argued that two‐dimensional (2-D) processing is preferably applied after transforming the point source responses into line source responses. The effect of this transformation is a correction of the amplitudes in the data. For single‐component acoustic data as well as for multicomponent elastic data a line source response is nothing but a superposition of point source responses. Abstract This paper presents a new computational method for quadrilateral meshing of a thin, or narrow, two-dimensional domain. An output mesh of our method is well-shaped and either single-layered, multi-layered, or partially multi-layered. Element sizes can be uniform or graded. A high quality, layered quadrilateral mesh is often required for finite element analyses of a narrow two-dimensional domain with a large deformation such as the analysis of rubber deformation or sheet metal forming. Our method consists of two steps: (1) extraction of the skeleton of a given domain by the discrete cho

In this experimental work, the effects of line energy at constant scan speed on quality of bead-on-plate laser welding of NiTinol sheets were investigated. Variations of bead geometry, changes in microstructure, variation of micro-hardness value along the weld-bead, generation of new phase during welding, changes in tensile strength of the welded samples, corrosion behavior of welded and parent material, and changes in phase transformation temperatures were measured for characterization of welded samples. Objectives. The major aim of the proposed research was to establish an efficient and reproducible genetic transformation system for Easter lily and gladiolus using either biolistics or Agrobacterium. Transgenic plants containing pathogen-derived genes for virus resistance were to be developed and then tested for virus resistance. The proposal was originally aimed at studying cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) resistance in plants, but studies later included bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV). Begomoviruses, which constitute one genus of the Geminiviridae family, are single-stranded DNA viruses that infect many dicotyledonous crops important to large agricultural industries as well as to subsistence growers. Although all begomoviruses are transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), they have proven difficult to manage even with heavy insecticide applications. The begomovirus, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), has been a problem in tomato production in Israel since the 1950s and in the United States since 1997. Approximately 89 begomoviruses have now been reported to infect toma

Swiss families between tradition and transformation Since 1950, birth rates in industrialised countries have been falling sharply worldwide. The same applies in Switzerland: 50 years ago, women were still having 2.1 children, but nowadays the statistics show they only have 1.4 children. Does this mean the family is becoming less significant as a key social institution? Could it soon be eradicated? What functions does the family perform today? Our study indicates that it will not. General The final goal and overall objective of the current research has been to modify lipid hydroperoxidation in order to create desirable phenotypes in two important crops, potato and tomato, which normally are exposed to abiotic stress associated with such oxidation. The specific original objectives were: (i) the roles of lipoxygenase (LOX) and phospholipids hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) in regulating endogenous levels of lipid peroxidation in plant tissues; (ii) the effect of modified lipid peroxidation on fruit ripening, tuber quality, crop productivity and abiotic stress

The broad objective of the project was to develop a feasible approach to combat diarrheal disease caused by ETEC through the development of a low-cost oral immunogen in tomato fruit, expressed in the context of a prototype tomato that would answer the shortcomings of plant oral vaccines, especially in terms of produce handling and control of gene escape. Specifically, the goals for Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) on this project were to develop transgenic tomato lines that express the enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) subunits A and/or B for use in oral edible vaccines

Gene targeting (GT) is a much needed technology as a tool for plant research and for the precise engineering of crop species. Recent advances in this field have shown that the presence of a DNA double-strand break (DSB) in a genomic locus is critical for the integration of an exogenous DNA molecule introduced into this locus. This integration can occur via either non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) into the break or homologous recombination (HR) between the broken genomic DNA and the introduced vector. A bottleneck for DNA integration via HR is the machinery responsible for homology search and s
