Full textThe purpose with this bachelor thesis is to identify risks and insufficiencies concerning the production at WilloMaskin AB. The project is limited to only 4 machines, where theories as “OEE” (overall equipment efficacy) should be illuminated and analyzed. The theory of “Single Minute Exchange of Die” is also presented.
The method used in this project is mostly based on qualitative studies but also quantitative studies are presented. Information has been gathered from Willo Maskin ABs own calculations, the university library of Växjö and electronical sources. The studies have been made through observation and notes of the production process at the workplace. Routines have been checked and discussions with people involved in the process have been passed. The observation also included machine stand still measurement and OEE calculations. The measuring for each machine under a time period shows the lack in the production progress and the methods used. The results show that the machine adjustment is the part of the process that requires the most production time. Discussions with machine operators prove that a lot of them don’t know how to handle new machines. However, the machines work very efficient when they work. It takes short adjustments and further education of operators to increase the availability. The introduction of different production follow-up systems is necessary to be able to measure, and in a long term even reduce the reasons of standstill.

Abstract This work was developed in SramPort, a company engaged in the manufacture and assembly of some components for bicycles, and emerged as a way of reducing changeover times in assembly lines of chains, in order to release resources for other interventions, equally important. To achieve this reduction the reference were the various principles of Lean Manufacturing, in particular the methodology SMED (Single Minute ExChange of Die). Throughout this work, four assembly lines of bicycle chains were then analyzed, being selected the most complicated changeover group of those lines. In this group were made all the tasks that could also occur in the other groups, and thus studying it, was possible to prepare procedure guides and suggest improvements to all of them. As a result, for this most complicated group a 47% reduction was obtained in the total time of production stop (seen in the last test performed), and a reduction of about 60% was proposed, given the best observed time in all the three SMED tests carried out. For the other assembly lines, there was even changeover groups whose ideal time, and therefore proposed, rose to a 70% reduction of the time of production stop. In all cases, the improvements implemented resulted in zero investment. However also were proposed although not implemented improvements that needed investment. Additionally, a SMED work was also initiated on a press that produces inner plates, being proposed a more organized sequence of work. Generally, there is still much more to be done, but the overall objectives have been accomplished, and now it is for the company to ensure the continuous monitoring of the proposed improvements.

This dissertation was carried out under the Master of Engineering and Industrial Management at Lusíada University of Vila Nova de Famalicão, and describes the project carried out at Bosch Car Multimédia, S.A. The project was a proposal to solve a problem due to a change in line layout and machine concepts in one of the business areas of the company: CC- “Chassi systems and Control”, where electronic components are produced for the automotive sector. These changes contributed negatively to the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of this set of lines. The Changeover process has been identified as one of the critical points leading to a project for continuous improvement. The main objective of the work was the reduction of the setup times of this set of production lines, through the implementation of the Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) methodology. After analysis of the Change Process, the critical points that most negatively contributed to the high changeover times of these lines were identified: i) high travel and waiting times by operators; ii) equipment breakdown after the changeover; iii) lack of organization of the devices / jigs in the storage places and in the transport cart; iv) and lack of a standard work for Changeover. The definition and implementation of Quick Changeover procedures led to the optimization of the production change process of the line under study and it was possible to reduce the average changeover loss time from 678.82 seconds in the initial state to 451.48 seconds in the current state.

This research has been developed in a group of textile companies called Polopiqué, which is characterised by its verticality and by creating the fashion of tomorrow. The industries increasingly present the need to differentiate themselves from their competitors, becoming competitive in the market segment in which they operate, and therefore, in order to achieve this level of competitiveness, Polopiqué aims to become a group increasingly linked to continuous improvement. The purpose of this study is to reduce the set-up times of the ring spinning machines belonging to the Moreira de Cónegos spinning mill of the Polopiqué group. This spinning process is considered the most prestigious in the world, however, after the analysis of the whole spinning production process and the observation of several changeovers, it was found that their set-up times are quite high, contributing to an abrupt decrease in production. Given this, the Single Minute Exchange ofDie (SMED) methodology, a Lean Production tool used to reduce set-up times, was implemented in the Moreira de Cónegos spinning mill, with the aim of improving the time periods of changes. In order to apply this methodology, an analysis of all the spinning production processes was used, as well as data of 2019. Several changeovers in the different ring spinning machines were also monitored and analysed, and interviews with the mill employees were conducted in order to clarify all the doubts that arose. This implementation allowed, on average, to theoretically reduce setup times by about 30%, reducing production loss and increasing the spinning mill's organization level and flexibility.

Full textThis project was developed in OLI – Sistemas Sanitários, S.A. and its main objective is the reduction of mold changes in the automatic injection machines of the company by applying the Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) methodology. On the other hand, the project also had the objectives of increasing the availability of the injection technician and reducing the percentage of stops to declare. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, the literature review was performed focusing on the theme SMED combined with Lean concepts. Later, the analysis of the current situation was performed and was made a study of the causes of the existing problems. Then solutions were proposed for them and finally some of these solutions were implemented. The solutions implemented were the creation of standards for injection, training operators about classification of stops, moving inactive molds in order to free up space to approximate the molds of machines where they work, acquisition of tools for employees, creation of a consumables supermarket and implementation of 5S’s in working areas. The results proved that the implemented actions contributed to the decrease of the average setup time and consequently to the increase of the technician availability. In addition, the percentage of stops to declare has decreased from 90% to below 10%.

Full textDue to technological advances and greater demand from consumers, companies feel obliged to find strategies to make their processes more flexible, effective, and efficient, in order to respond to market necessities. Diversified and low-volume production is one of the biggest difficulties faced by companies, as it causes many changes in setup, which results in increased cost and production time since it does not add any type of value to the company. The assembly is one of the most used processes in the Portuguese industry, which included methods ranging from the tightening of a screw to the assembly of electronic components. HFA is already knowledgeable of the Lean Thinking, it has already implemented and uses some of his tools. The main objective of this dissertation was to implement the SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) methodology in the SMD (Surface Mount Device) area to optimize your production process. The production line, in which the methodology was implemented, was selected because it was the one that the company identified as having the highest setup time, and in which an intervention to optimize production time was a priority. In this line, production operations consist of assembling surface mount devices (SMDs) on printed circuit boards (PCBs). The results obtained were satisfactory, with a reduction in setup times, however, they were not exactly as expected. A gross reduction in internal tasks and the elimination of many others were expected, but due to the short time, it was not possible. It was still possible to eliminate a considerable number, but the conversion of internal to external tasks was very small, considering the total number of tasks. Even so, it took about 1 hour to convert and eliminate tasks.
