Abstract:
This book explores the co-development of political, social, economic, and artistic networks of Florentines in the Kingdom of Hungary during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg. Analyzing the social network of these politicians, merchants, artisans, royal officers, dignitaries of the Church, and noblemen is the primary objective of this book. The study addresses both descriptively the patterns of connectivity and causally the impacts of this complex network on cultural exchanges of various types, among these migration, commerce, diplomacy, and artistic exchange. In the setting of a case study, this monograph should best be thought of as an attempt to cross the boundaries that divide political, economic, social, and art history so that they simultaneously figure into a single integrated story of Florentine history and development.

Abstract:
This chapter offers an account of the truth conditions of sentences involving terms like ‘ought’. These truth conditions involve a function from worlds of evaluation to domains of worlds, and an ordering of the worlds in such domains. Every such ordering arises from a probability function and a value function—since it ranks worlds according to the expected value of certain propositions that are true at those worlds. With the objective ‘ought’, the probability function is the omniscient function, which assigns 1 to all truths and 0 to all falsehoods; with the subjective ‘ought’, the probability function captures the uncertainty of the relevant agent. The relevance of this account for understanding conditionals is explored, and this account is defended against objections. For present purposes, the crucial point is that any normative use of ‘ought’ is normative because of the value that is semantically involved. The fundamental normative concepts are evaluative.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides an article-by-article commentary to the provisions of the 2019 EU Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market. It investigates the history, objectives, and content of Directive 2019/790's complex provisions as well as the relationship between some of those provisions and between the Directive and the pre-existing acquis. It explains why the EU Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market is a significant and foundational part of the broader EU copyright architecture. The book aims to navigate the legislative provisions that were adopted in 2019 to make EU copyright fit for the Digital Single Market. It marks two important anniversaries in the EU copyright harmonization history: the thirtieth anniversary of the first ever adopted copyright directive, Software Directive 91/250, and the twentieth anniversary of InfoSoc Directive 2001/29, an ambitious legislative instrument.

Abstract:
What is in itself good for you, according to the argument of this chapter, is getting or achieving things that are objectively worthwhile, these being items on an objective list. Although it would be desirable to have a unified explanation of what belongs on the list, for now we rely on intuition. The chapter surveys and finds inadequate a number of alternative accounts of well-being, mainly on the ground that they conflict with the common-sense claims that enjoyment (feeling good) is a significant component of well-being—an entry on the objective list—and that there are additional intrinsic goods besides enjoyment. Since there are plural goods, we are stuck with multidimensional assessment, and with the difficulties of aggregation that involves.

Abstract:
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, there has been an overwhelming demand for information about Islam, and recent events - the war in Iraq, terrorist attacks both failed and successful, debates throughout Europe over Islamic dress, and many others - have raised new questions in the minds of policymakers and the general public. This newly updated edition of What Everyone Needs to Know about Islam is the best single source for clearly presented, objective information about these new developments, and for answers to questions about the origin and traditions of Islam. Editor of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Modern Islam and The Oxford History of Islam, and author of The Future of Islambits and many other acclaimed works, John L. Esposito is one of America's leading authorities on Islam. This brief and readable book remains the first place to look for up-to-date information on the faith, customs, and political beliefs of the more than one billion people who call themselves Muslims.

Abstract:
It is now commonly argued that objective or value-neutral social science is impossible; that all research is corrupted by the biases and interests of the researcher. This chapter critiques various forms of that position and demonstrates both that the expected sources of bias are too narrow and that there is ample evidence they can be transcended. A social scientific study of religion is possible because researcher interests are often too complex to produce single preferences, because many topics are impervious to interests, because in many cases evidence trumps preferences, and because the competition between researchers allows subsequent generations to decide who has the better of any argument.

Volume 2 presents the fundamental principles related to polymer processign operations including the processing of thermoplastic polymers and thermosets. The objective of this volume is not to provide recipies that necessarily guarantee better product quality. Rather, emphasis is placed on presenting a fundamental approach to effectively analyze processing operations. The specific polymer processing operations for thermoplastics include plasticating single-screw extrusion, morphology evolution during compounding of polymer blends, compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends, wire coating extrusion, fiber spinning, tubular film blowing, coextrusion, and thermoplastic foam extrusion. The specific polymer processing operations for thermosets include reaction injection molding, pultrusion of fiber-reinforced thermosets, and compression molding of thermoset composites.

Gillies, Donald. The Propensity Interpretation. Edited by Alan Hájek and Christopher Hitchcock. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199607617.013.18.

Full text
Abstract:
The propensity interpretation of probability was introduced by Popper in 1957, and the chapter begins with a discussion of Popper’s initial account of propensities and a comparison with Peirce’s related ideas. The original propensity interpretation had a number of strands, some of which could be accepted while others were rejected. This meant that the propensity interpretation could be, and was, developed in different ways by different philosophers of science. One point at issue was whether propensities were objective probabilities of single events. This led to a distinction between (i) single-case propensity theories, and (ii) long-run propensity theories. Another problem concerned the relation between propensities and causes – if propensities had a causal import, because of what is known as the Humphreys’ paradox they might not satisfy the standard axioms of probability. The chapter concludes by discussing how propensities might be connected to observed frequencies via the theory of statistical testing.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter asks whether environmental and human health are well served by the creation and use of simple indices, such as the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool and the Environmental Performance Index. Reducing vast complexity to a single number offers the possibility of helping to communicate complex science to the public and to decision-makers. Indices are appealing because they are quantitative, have the appearance of being data-based, and seem objective. However, the biases and potential errors inherent in simplifying multidimensional data can result in misleading or incorrect conclusions. This chapter details some problems inherent to environmental indices, examines how these issues have led wellintentioned studies astray, and offers solutions to navigate the indices landscape.

Full text
Abstract:
Banking crises prompted the United States to make lending of last resort, deposit insurance, and bank resolution federal responsibilities long before banks crossed state lines in large numbers. The US system offers an existing and successful model, whereby the deposit insurance and resolution functions are combined under a single institution, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The key objective underpinning the FDIC’s choice among different resolution options is that the chosen resolution is that which would result in the least cost to the deposit insurance fund. This chapter sets out the role of the FDIC as the deposit insurer, supervisor, and resolution authority, while also examining some key principles of the US approach to dealing with failing banks.

Abstract:
Recent research on the interaction between services trade and investment restrictions and the quality of economic regulation has shown that the productivity growth benefits from liberalization depend importantly on the quality of economic governance. We provide quantitative estimates of the extent of potential downstream productivity gains from services liberalization for EU countries and how these are conditional on domestic economic governance performance; we discuss several dimensions of the state of play in the EU with respect to implementation of the Services Directive and realization of the Single Market objective. We argue that more attention should be given to the design of services trade agreements in improving economic governance, and make several suggestions how this could be done.

Abstract:
2018 witnessed several key developments which have shaped the digital single market. Whereas some issues are now in the final stages of the legislative process, other key topics are in their infancy and therefore require in-depth discussion as to how EU law should react to the challenges and needs of the digital economy. This volume focuses on an issue central to the digital single market: the ‘Liability for Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things’. European legislators face the challenge of deciding between adapting existing product liability rules or the creation of a new concept of objective liability for autonomous systems. The 2018 Münster colloquium provided a forum for intense discussion of these questions between renowned experts on digital law and representatives from EU institutions and industry. Abstract:
Although commodity derivatives are a small segment of the overall global derivatives markets, their regulation attracted more public attention than any other single issue on the post-2008 derivatives reform agenda. The goal of regulatory reform in this sector in the United States, European Union, and G20 went beyond that of bolstering of transparency and resilience to include the more market-constraining objective of strengthening “position limits” that set a ceiling on the number of contracts that traders are allowed to hold. The initiatives to strengthen position limits after 2008 demonstrated the importance of a complex interplay of domestic, inter-state, and transnational political dynamics in shaping regulatory trends. Reform initiatives in this sector also highlighted some unexpectedly long delays and inconsistencies in the implementation of reforms.

Full text
Abstract:
Covering events such as banking crises, economic bubbles, natural disasters, trade embargoes, and depressions, this single-volume encyclopedia of major U.S. financial downturns provides readers with an event-driven understanding of the evolution of the American economy. The United States has fairly recently experienced the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. But crippling financial crises are hardly unusual: economic emergencies have occurred throughout American history and can be seen as a cyclical and "normal" (if undesirable) aspect of an economic system. This encyclopedia supplies objective, accessible, and interesting entries on 100 major U.S. financial crises from the Colonial era to today that have had tremendous domestic impact—and in many cases, global impact as well. The entries explore the history and impact of major economic events, including banking crises, economic shortages, recessions, national strikes and labor upheavals, natural resource shortages, panics, real estate bubbles, social upheavals, and the collapse of specific American industries such as rubber and steel production. Students will find this book an essential ready-reference on key events in American economic history that documents how and why these events led to significant financial and economic problems throughout the United States and around the globe.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, three control methods recently developed for or applied to electric motors in general and to permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) motors, in particular, are presented. The methods include model predictive control (MPC), deadbeat control (DBC), and combined vector and direct torque control (CC). The fundamental principles of the methods are explained, the machine models appropriate to the methods are derived, and the control systems are explained. The PMS motor performances under the control systems are also investigated. It is elaborated that MPC is capable of controlling the motor under an optimal performance according to a defined objective function. DBC, on the other hand, provides a very fast response in a single operating cycle. Finally, combined control produces motor dynamics faster than one under VC, with a smoother performance than the one under DTC.

Abstract:
Concerns about referential indeterminacy also feature prominently in discussions about realism within the philosophy of science. In this chapter we examine a particular version of scientific realism that arises by considering Ramsey sentences. Roughly, these are sentences where all the theoretical vocabulary has been existentially quantified away. Ramsey sentences seem promising, since they seem to incur a kind of existential commitment to theoretical entities, which is characteristic of realism, whilst making room for a certain level referential indeterminacy. We examine both the relation between Newman's objection and the Push-Through Construction, and the relation between Ramsey sentences and various model-theoretic notions of conservation. By combining the Push-Through Construction with these notions of conservation, we show that the dialectic surrounding Newman's objection mirrors the dialectic surrounding Putnam's permutation argument in the philosophy of mathematics from chapter 2.

Abstract:
The complex endocrine response to exercise in children and adolescents includes significant changes in hormones that regulate muscle adaptations and growth. Better understanding of this system makes the possible use of hormonal changes as an objective tool to gauge exercise intensity and duration, to assess training response, and to improve our understanding of the beneficial and deleterious hormonal effects of competitive sports (e.g. on growth and reproduction). Moreover, better understanding of the unique relationship between exercise and the endocrine system is important not only for children and adolescents engaged in competitive sports, but also to those with chronic diseases and disabilities who wish or need to increase their physical activity levels. The effect of a single exercise bout on the endocrine system and in particularly on the GH-IGF-I axis, the reproductive system, and the adrenal gland is discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Thromboembolism in pregnancy remains a major cause of direct maternal mortality in the Western world. Thromboembolic events in pregnancy are spread across the three trimesters but the puerperium is the time of greatest risk with a relative risk of around 20-fold compared to the non-pregnant patient. When compared to the non-pregnant population where distal deep vein thrombosis is most common, most events in pregnancy are iliofemoral and left sided. Given the multi-hit nature of the problem, awareness of risk factors is important. The two most significant single risk factors in pregnancy for thromboembolism are history of previous venous thromboembolism and thrombophilia. The identification of risk factors will guide the use of thromboprophylaxis and assist diagnosis; however, objective diagnosis is required. Prophylaxis and treatment focuses on low-molecular-weight heparin, which is considered safe in pregnancy.
