Abstract:
A considerable body of knowledge has been constructed perpetuating the notion single parenthood is a significant problem for society, and while this is supported by specific research designs and sampling practices, it is also maintained by two key discourses. The first constitutes single parenthood as a deficit, while the second identifies it as a risk. In both cases, these discourses are operationalised by the philosophy of neo-liberalism, which envisions good citizenship as economic autonomy. Historically, it has been the convergence of the risk and deficit discourses that has constituted single parenthood as a social problem. More recently, however, risk discourses have come to dominate thinking about single parenthood. As a result, this thesis terms risk discourses as dominant discourses. As dominant discourses, risk sidelines or discounts other ways of thinking about single parenthood. While a few exceptions are notable, including some feminist, poststructural and family resilience scholars, most researchers appear unable to see past the positioning of these discourses and envision another way of being for parents who are single. This means that alternative subjectivities are obscured and have limited influence in this field of research. Because this thesis aimed to problematise dominant subjectivities of single parenthood, a poststructural Foucauldian framework has been utilized in order to document the discursive constructions of single parenthood through literature, insider discourses, and outsider discourses. For the purposes of this thesis, outsider discourses are constituted as those outside the subjectivities of single parenthood, such as media and research discourses. An examination of the Australian media has been undertaken over a one year period, the results of which form the basis for the analysis of media discourses of single parenthood. Parents who are single were also targeted for self selection into this project to provide insider discourses about single parenthood. This analysis explored how respondents negotiated the discourses of single parenthood and how they themselves used or rejected the subjectivities constructed for them via these discourses to constitute their own subjectivities. This thesis aimed to explore the role of discourses in the construction of individuals' subjectivities. Specifically, it draws attention to the way in which knowledge and power work through discourses to emphasize what is allowable, both publicly and privately, in relation to single parenthood. Most importantly, this thesis offers alternative subjectivities for single parenthood to facilitate new ways of thinking about parents who are single.

Abstract:
Single-parent households are on the increase in our society and especially single-father households where fathers are fulfilling the role of both parents in rearing their children. In this qualitative study, three single fathers who are primary caregivers were interviewed regarding their experience of primary caregiving, adjusting and coping with the transition to primary caregiving and their needs and concerns for their children's future. This study utilised a phenomenological approach to look at single fathers as the best and most informed individuals to explore and describe their lived experiences of being primary caregivers. The rationale for using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) is that it is concerned with individuals' subjective reports and assumes that participants seek to interpret their experiences into some form that is understandable to them. The researcher utilised three semi-structured, in depth, face-to-face interviews as a method of data collection. Each interview focused on eliciting different sets of data, firstly the researcher look at identifying the participants' experience of primary care giving, then moved onto their adjusting and coping with the transition and finally focused on the primary needs and concerns of participants with regards to primary care giving. The sub-themes that emerged from the study include the loss of a partner, shifts in the role the fathers play as parent, dealing with children's reaction to the "loss" of a mother in the home, good parenting: biology vs upbringing, social construction of men and woman, the value of self-care for single fathers, where self-care incorporates both physical and mental care, internal support from family or friends, external support from the community, relationship between fathers and children and sibling relationships. These led to the various super-ordinate themes. The super-ordinate themes and categories that resulted from the analysis of the material include: (1) The transition to being a single-parent and primary caregiver was difficult, (2) Parenting is not biological it is cultural and fathers can fulfil the role, (3) Self-care is important, (4) Support comes from family and friends but social support is rare, (5) Close family relationships are formed

Abstract:
The field of autism in epidemiology has received much attention in recent times especially as scientific information evolves on the causes and impact of autism spectrum disorder. Just as medical research is conducting to arrest the growing pace of autism with current research indicating one out of every 68 children in the United States diagnosed autistic, the field of the social science has equally produced some literature on the subject. Much of the social science and epidemiological information in the field has bothered on framing the concept (Murray, 2008), historical dimension and causation of the disease, and its associative influence on family (Grinker, 2007). However, not much has been done to assess the phenomenon from the point of view of conflict analysis and resolution (Sabatelli & Waldron, 1995) to fully understand their sense of conflict ambiguity and ambiguous loss of a child with autism (Cridland et al. 2014; O'Brien, 2007). This research therefore attempted to bridge that gap through reflexive analysis of transcripts from phenomenological interviewing of 19 participants comprised of 14 single parents and 5 married couples with autistic children. While the primary focus of the research was Single parents, married couples served comparative analytical purpose of data validation. Theories of phenomenology, Resilience, human needs, stereotypes & identity, relative deprivation, attribution, critical theory, ambiguous loss, etc. operationalize to frame the research language for hermeneutical transformative interpretation and social action about the phenomenon. Results from the study indicate conflict behavioral experience, a burden curve and resilient risk factors associated with caring for an autistic child leading to possible crisis borderline.

Van, Zyl Izelle. "Single fathers' experience of fatherhood." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30736.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years various factors have contributed to the dissolution of the traditional family and the subsequent emergence of alternative family systems like the single parent family. Single parent families have become a reality in our society, a fact reflected by statistics which indicate an increase in the occurrence of single parent families over the last couple of years. However, the single parent family is still mostly perceived as consisting of the mother and her children, rather than the father and his children. Research narratives seem to support the single-parenthood-equals-single-motherhood plot in that there is an abundance of single parent accounts in the literature that mostly tell the stories of single mothers. Thus, fathers who find themselves in the position of single father seem to be marginalised in society and stories regarding their experiences are few and far between. The aim of this project was to explore and describe how single fathers in South Africa experience fatherhood by focussing on their personal narratives. Therefore the research inquiry for this project took the form of a narrative inquiry which provides a way to understand people’s experiences by privileging their stories. The researcher conducted unstructured interviews with participants to produce languaged data which were analysed using a narrative analysis strategy. A narrative analysis aims to investigate not merely the content of the story, but rather the story itself and the way in which it is told within a specific cultural and historical context. Hopefully, in the telling, listening and retelling of their stories these fathers’ voices will become more pronounced in the research narratives and thus contribute to the body of knowledge pertaining to single fatherhood. Abstract:
Single mothers have considered to be a vulnerable group in the society, both economically and socially. But how do they experience their everyday life in relation to be a single mother and at the same time pursue a university or college education? This qualitative study aims to explore how five single mothers experiences their everyday life. Through the use of Lone Rahbek Christensen's life-mode theory and Bourdieu's defintion of social and economic capital, the purpose of the study is to explore how life-modes affect the mother's former, present and future life situations. The result shows, among other things, that the mothers to a large extent, show signs of being carriers of the same type of life-mode. They also seem to use similar strategies to cope with difficult situations in their everyday life. Also, the social and economic resources where very important for all of the single studying mothers in order to manage their life situation, and at the same time live up to the requirements of their surroundings to be accepted as a "good mother".

The present study aimed to characterize the vulnerability experiences lived in consumer relations directed to the children of female single parents. In order to do so, the main theoretical aspects related to the discipline of marketing and society, consumer vulnerability, contemporary families and consumption, and divorce and its effect on household consumption were addressed. The combination of those theoretical aspects shaped the conceptual research model. The methodological decisions focused on the representation of a qualitative approach, made possible by individual semi-structured face-to-face interviews conducted with audio recording. In total, fifteen divorced mothers of children up to twelve years or children older than twelve, but that at the time of divorce found themselves in that particular age has been conveniently invited and interviewed in 2015, in places previously established according to their preferences. The transcript of the interviews and the content analysis technique presented therefore three categories for assessment, which aimed, respectively, to recognize the general aspects of the divorce process and the characteristics of the nuclear family consumption versus the consumption of female single-parent family, and also to characterize the vulnerability exploited in context. The results indicate that the vulnerability in this context is due to: reduction of paternal involvement in family income, the consumption deprivation caused by the new financial conditions of the mother, the conflicts between the former spouses and family, and the characteristics and individual states such as competion, materialism, anger, jealousy and shame caused by the dependence on third parties.

The subject concerning reproductive rights, as most of the demands nowadays, is very complex, not only because of its links with biosciences and biotechnology with its particular dynamics and ambiguous effects , but also because of its origins in feminism which makes it very likely to partial and/or partidary interpretations. Therefore, the present dissertation intends to face the issue of reproductive rights taking into consideration its inherent complexity, which is very clear in the chosen example of the single woman project of parenthood in which a single woman, addopting the use of artificial insemination with a donor’s semen, has the intention to form a family composed only by a mother and a child, without establishing affective or sexual bonds with a man. Searching the ethical and juridical consequences that would arise from the single woman project of parenthood, this research starts from two main analysis: a bioethical one, in the first chapter, with emphasis in the principalist and personalist m

Abstract:
Drawing on contemporary theories of intimacy, this study explores the intimacy narratives and practices of single mothers at a time of, it is argued, social and cultural change in terms of intimacy. Narrative interviews of twenty-four single mothers draw out layers of personal, social and cultural complexity in terms of understanding, experiencing and making choices about intimacy in their everyday lives. The concept of ‘intimacy scripts' (developed from Simon and Gagnon, 1973) is deployed to explore how single mothers develop blueprints for their intimate lives, drawing on a range of cultural, social and personal possibilities for intimate practices. This process is viewed within a wider context of gendered power relations and material constraints. Participants were often affected by stigmatizing depictions of single mothers and resisted these through their narratives which tended to emphasize how they had not chosen single motherhood. Indeed the transition to single motherhood was often experienced as traumatic, marked by shame, disappointment and loss. Perceptions of increased fluidity and the possibility for experimentation around intimacy are discernible, chiming with individualisation theorists (Bauman, 2003; Beck and Beck-Gernsheim, 1995; Giddens, 1992). However, basic economic survival often took precedence over the reflexive organisation of intimate lives (Jamieson, 1998). Intimacy narratives were unsettled, in turn depicting opportunities for intimate experimentations and invoking nostalgia for more traditional intimate forms, demonstrating ambivalence and liminality. Heteronormative ideals of coupledom, romance and traditional family remained aspirational for many, although the importance of equality in relationships was also highlighted. Yet many participants struggled to find suitable male partners and were aware of inequalities and the risks associated with re-partnering, often based on negative experiences. Intimate choices were shaped and constrained by socio-economic positioning; the protection of dependents; maintenance of their family unit; continuing gendered expectations and the ongoing centrality of heteronormative romantic couple-centred intimate practices.

The concept of “motherhood” and “fatherhood”, to we human beings, is acquired through gender role in the course of socialization. In terms of family behavior, what a mother does is called motherhood and what a father does is called fatherhood. These two terms, recently, are replaced by parenthood. Moreover, it is believed that children grow better both physically and mentally if both parents are involved in child raising. However, parenthood does not necessarily indicate motherhood plus fatherhood. It is manifested in various forms in all sorts of family types. Family types in our society have changed since 1990, and the number of single-parent families have increased the fastest and the most. In Taiwan, studies on single-father families are comparatively rare and small in scope. Also the gender role of a father possesses some particularities when a father does mothering in a single parent family. Given these, this present study aims to investigate what parenting strategies a single father adopts when dealing with family chores, what the relation is like between gender role and gender ideology, and whether there is any change in masculinity in the course of single father parenting. The methodology adopted in this study is qualitative inquiry by in-depth interview, and eight single fathers are involved. It is found that family types influence the gender role the most. In a stem family, the grandmother takes on all house chores, and the single father is the bread earner, which results in division of labor by gender. Moreover, the financial burden of a single father family enhances the masculinity of the single father on the one hand and changes his gender ideology on the other. In a nuclear family, the single father does housework, which leads to their retrospection and participation in further education and communal activities. This in turn results in gender equality. Being a single father softens his masculinity. This indicates the reinterpretation of parenthood, rather than the changes of gender ideology.

Single-parent family is one of the rapidest growth type among the change of family structure in the transforming society. The inferiority of finance situation of female in single-parent family is of more concerned. While the role of the male in a single-parent family draws more attentions not until recently. Male or female plays roles substantially different in the society. Male is expected to be the provider in raising family. While being in the single family, male has also to be a counselor in dealing with emotion other than provider. Male, in single-parent family, faces various kinds of problems in the family as well as try to be competent in becoming a father. The methodology adopted in this study is qualitative inquire by in-depth interview, and ten single fathers were involved. It is the purpose to try find out how the financial situation, the social and economical status, the assistance from the original family and from female others, will affect the single-parent family. Four different types of male are resulted from the aforementioned factors:「while-collar with female others assistance」、「blue-collar with female others assistance」、「while-collar without female others assistance」、「blue-collar without female others assistance」。These four type of male affected further by other causes, and they show significant differences in the area:「the competence of job and the household affairs and social inter-personal network」, 「the relationship with kid」, 「the emotion and a father does mothering in a single parent family」, and 「the asking for assistance」, as being a father in single-parent family. Differences are described and discussed in this thesis. It is found that whether there is any change in masculinity in the course of single father parenting this will cause the quality of parenthood. It will result single father’s parenthood in traditional type、transitional type or involvement.

The research aims to explore the parenthood experience of single fathers who divorced from new immigrant families and what challenges they have to face. Narrative inquiry is used and selected in this research, and the researcher uses the analysis model proposed by Clandinin and Connelly. The results are as follows: The role of the single father in new immigrant family influenced by the father's of his family that provided the economy but lack of strategies on expressing their feelings, so it becomes hard to interact with children and deal with their emotions. Single father have to adjust the proportion of work to family and sometimes ask for assistance from other members from his family. The economic status of single father doesn’t have much change. Because of the limit of his wife, they regard their children's education as the most important project in their parenthood and less change in the communication with teachers. The activities for single father and their children in the daily life are cooking and watching television. The most important requirement for their children is to grow up safely and don’t have any deviation. The ex-wife will remain in the same county or nearby area to interact and connect with their children. The motherhood plays a complementary role in single fathers’ families and complements emotional care of children, providing additional material and health knowledge.

Arosi, Nokwanda. "A self help group programme for single mothers." Thesis, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/494.

Full text
Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Clinical Psychology) in the Department of Psychology University of Zululand 1992.
Single parenting is becoming much more common today for a variety of reasons. The single parent family is a result of divorce, desertion or separation, death or having a child illegitimately, Some women make this choice for palitico-feminist reasons, wanting parenthood but being unwilling to cohabit with a man. It may well reflect a deep seated need to prove her independence. The present study has been motivated by the fact that becoming a single parent is usually a traumatic process with much heated and confused emotion in relationships over and above the basic problem of just one adult figure having to cope with small children. The aim of the study was to elicit from a group of single mothers their needs, to prioritize these needs, then form an on-going self—help group programme. It was hypothesized that a self-help group programme for single mothers would improve parental attitudes, parenting skills and interpersonal functioning. Parental attitudes, parenting skills and interpersonal functioning were assessed over three assessment periods, i.e. pretest, post test and fallow up. The following psychological measures were used: Maternal chi1d—rearing attitude scale, Parenting skills qualitative and quantitative ratings and Carkhuff scales far levels of interpersonal functioning. The project consisted of meetings with the group of single mothers at weekly intervals over two months. The group meetings were videotaped for evaluation by independent judges, for levels of interpersonal functioning. A short written qualitative evaluation of the programme was required of the mothers. After the programme was instituted there was no significant change in parental attitudes and parenting skills* One can assume that this group of single mothers had an extensive knowledge of child-rearing practices and parenting skills. This might be so because the group was composed of educated and professiona1 mothers. At the same time one cannot cone 1ude that educated and professional mothers have good parental attitudes and parenting skills because there is no available literature or research findings to support that cone 1usion. Interpersonal functioning improved remarkedly in terms of empathy, respect, genuineness and se1f—disc1osure. The single mothers evaluated the programme as goad and helpful to their children. They all wished that the programme could continue. One of the limitations of the study was the fact that the sample was small. But the number met the requirements for a group. Another limitation was that the group only comprised of one category of single mothers, i.e. educated and professional mothers. Perhaps if the group has a mix of categories, i.e. lay mothers and teenage mothers, resu1ts yielded would show a significant change in child—rearing attitudes and parenting skills. Single motherhood is very stressful. Single mothers find it difficult to cope with the role strain, isolation and 1one1iness. Even though some single mothers might be financially adequate they still need emotional support. Interpersonal functioning is improved if people with a similar problem are put in a group. Members recognize that they are not alone in having an emotional problem. The simple sharing of experiences is an important human need.

In view of the proportion of single-parent family is growing rapidly, and the growth rate of single father is higher than single mother among those families. However, male are less to learn parenthood during the socialization process, the challenges of role adaption they faced are possibly harder than the female one. When the father becomes a single parent, they have to face two important issues, income maintaining and family care. The single fathers with better income that can alleviate the pressure through the purchase of services, but for the worse ones, they only can be helped with social support. This research visited 9 single fathers by using depth-interview; they shared their experiences of economic disadvantage in their parenting practices, and how the social support influenced the implementation. The main findings are as follow: 1. On the issue of the sex division of labor, single fathers considered the parenting practices should not distinguish by gender, instead, it should depends on the abilities and working condition, which one has the abilities, then implement it. And their attitude toward the sex division of labor will not directly affect their parenting practices. 2. This research discovered that some fathers that had executed parenting practice before they become single parent, with such experiences make their parenthood practice quite easier. Those who without such experiences before, they must to learn the parenthood practices after becoming single parent. 3. The content of the single father's parenting practice will be influenced by the aspect they emphasize, father's abilities, and the child's condition. 4. Parenting practices will impact upon the disadvantaged single father's finance and job, they spend more time at home to learn how to play whole roles in family, relatively, spend less time on job and income maintaining. 5. When the single father referred to the pressures, the most widely mentioned are the pressures from finance and parenting practices. Under the circumstance with both pressures, if no one gives them a hand, the sense of powerless and abandoned will grow up. 6. For single father, message support and instrumental support are more available, compared to the previous two supports, emotional support is relatively inadequate. Family for their support of children of single fathers is very important. The support from the family, such the support of child is important to single father. The amount of single-parent families is growing up rapidly, but the welfare for the single-parent families still inadequate in Taiwan; in this situation the State should play an active role. Children are not only the responsibility of (single parent) family, but also the responsibility of whole society and State. In the final of this study, researcher provides some suggestions to government and NGOs, which includes: helping single father to get the job both with flexible working hours and stable salary, help to resettle the finance disadvantaged single-parent children with the after-school care. Researcher also suggest that the school should be an agent to offer the information of welfare resources, and the single parent service agencies could provide more information and emotional support programs to single fathers.

Abstract:
The study was aimed at investigating the effects of single parenthood on school going adolescents on a group of male and female children schooling in Gaborone District of Botswana. The research questions focused on investigating the effects of. single parenthood on the social interactions of school-going adolescents, effects on their performance in class, the attitude of the community on such adolescents and whether single parenthood affected boys and girls differently. To start the investigation, a sample of 80 adolescents was randomly selected from a total of 2 000 form 4 and form 5 students. The findings revealed that the majority (91.3%) of school-going adolescents from single parenthood stay with their mothers. The survey findings also revealed that school-going adolescents from single parenthood do not get along with their single parent, single parents are not always around to attend to the needs of their children and they are not always happy at home. The survey findings showed that there are poor child-parent relationships and this adversely affects the children's performance at school. The study revealed that the majority of adolescents from single-parent households have fallen behind in some of their subjects (77.5%), have problems getting their homework done on time (46.3%) , have unsatisfactory school reports and they have failed some the subjects they are doing (78.8%).

Tichovolsky, Marianne H. "Parenting and Parent Predictors of Changes in Child Behavior Problems." 2011. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/558.

Full text
Abstract:
Behavior problems are common during early childhood, and while many children will outgrow them, others will continue to have substantial difficulties. Unfortunately, too little is known about which children will exhibit continued difficulties, making it difficult to intervene before maladaptive behavior becomes entrenched. A number of parenting and parent characteristics, including ineffective discipline, maternal depression, parenting stress, and limited social support have consistently been found to be associated with externalizing problems in young children. While these variables are concurrently related to behavior problems, we know very little about whether or not they predict change in externalizing behaviors over time. The proposed research examined several parenting and parent predictors of changes in child behavior problems, including lax and overreactive discipline, single parent status, and parental depression. In addition, this study evaluated whether child gender and ethnicity moderated the relationships between these variables and changes in problem behavior. Single parenthood was the only significant predictor for the sample as a whole, while parent depression was a significant predictor for girls. Several significant ethnic differences emerged, highlighting the importance of considering cultural context in studies of parenting and externalizing behavior.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the issue of single parenthood from the perspective of women mothers. The main aim of the thesis was to survey the attitude of lone mothers - mothers of minor children - to the single parenthood. To generally describe the impact, which a termination of a partnership may have on a lone woman a mother raising minor child/children. What living circumstances she has to face and what lifestyle they chose at this stage of their lives. And finally, what forms of help they use. The text is divided into two parts theoretical and practical one. First chapter of the theoretical part deals with the family and its mission, what functions the family should fulfil in relation to its individual members and what could be the results if these functions are disrupted. The chapter is completed with the view of parenthood, which significantly changes the proper functioning of a family. Chapter two describes the crisis in partnership or marriage resulting in single parenthood. Furthermore, various forms related to child care after separation of partners are mentioned as well as potential impacts of the separation on the family. The third chapter discusses the maintenance and potential support, which single mother may receive from the state, surroundings or family. Finally, the chapter assesses the potential of women single mothers on the labour market. For the practical part of the thesis, a questioning technique was chosen and used in semi-structured interviews. The examined group consisted of fifteen women single mothers, aged 25-55, living in the district of Písek, having been at least six months after a divorce/separation and taking care of minor children. Women, who involuntarily become single mothers due to the partner´s death, were not included in the examined group. In connection with the thesis objective, two survey questions were asked: "How do lone women mothers of minor children - deal with single parenthood?" and "What support provided by the family, surroundings or the state do the lone women mothers of minor children use?". The survey has revealed that the majority of communication partners faces difficult financial situation caused by the loss of a second income or generally deteriorated potential on the labour market due to the necessity to combine work and child care without the support of the second partner and in many cases due to the improper fulfilment of maintenance obligations by fathers. Almost half of the communication partners has experienced such a situation, when the obliged parent fails to fulfil his maintenance obligation properly. Among other issues connected with the single parenthood, many communication partners mentioned the feeling of loneliness, lack of the father´s interest in his children, compromises they have to make when choosing a job or activities for their leisure time. The survey has shown that majority of the communication partners spends most of their leisure time by taking care of children or the household. The thesis may be used as a study material for students with social and legal specialization, as an introduction to the issue. In addition, women who experienced divorce/separation may utilize it as one of prospective manuals for the solution to their difficult situation.

The education of children in a regime of female single parenthood has been a prominent phenomenon in recent years, justifying a specialized intervention. Well, based on this assumption, we found that the intervention of the social educator is essential to guidance, transmitting information and following up the female single parenthood families, enabling them to acquire social skills to deal with various situations they face. In this context, we present an empirical study of a qualitative nature, through by the resorting to an open and unstructured interview, through which we reconstruct the life stories of four participants (n=4), native of social neighbourhoods from the city of Porto, corresponding to female single parenthood aggregates, with common features of economic and social precariousness. The results obtained show that are attributed to the female single parenthood families, a set of effects on children´s education, which result the most of the socioeconomic conditions, than of the gender of the parent. Furthermore, the study confirmed the importance of the acquisition and reinforcement of the social skills for the households overcome difficulties they face and accomplish a full and effective integration, highlighting therefore, the importance of the intervention of the Social Educator.

Afonso, Maria Teresa Azevedo. "Conciliação entre a vida profissional, familiar e pessoal em trabalhadores/as da administração pública após o aumento do horário de trabalho: estudo de famílias monoparentais." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/19928.

Abstract:
What we address in this paper is the question of how single parents, working in Public Administration, make the reconciliation of family life with their professional life, after the implementation of law, which established the increase of working hours. To this scope, it was selected a number of working women and men in the public administration with small and dependent children belonging to single-parent and biparental families. Qualitative information was obtained by carrying out semi-structured interviews with ten of lone parents and ten nuclear aggregates, of both genders, of different ages and with different occupations. Processing of the data was grouped by themes and analyzed by the percentage of the phenomena in question. From the results it was possible to draw the following conclusions: (1) there are few reconciliation measures; (2) the measures are not always applied, often for fear in requesting them by workers; (3) The change of the working hours had not taken into account the difficulties of single parent families; (4) there is no uniformity as to the application criteria of flexible hours in the public administration. Finally, we emphasize urgency in the creation of public policies of greater incentive to conciliation in single-parent families, so that it be equal to what is unique and different which is different in view of the new social phenomena that are already a reality and that the state should not forget in order to have healthy families and a more fair society.

Pelletier, David. "Types de famille et ségrégation résidentielle croisée à Montréal, 2006." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/6180.

Full text
Abstract:
The main topic of this text is a narrowly defined form of demographic segregation: segregation by family type. However, since the spatial distribution of married, cohabiting, lone-mother, or lone-father families does not depend solely on their structure, we must also consider other aspects of their identity, including their socio-economic and ethno-cultural characteristics. The combination of these factors produces a cross-segregation that we investigate using 2006 census data for the Montreal metropolitan area. We first use segregation indices to highlight a "raw" family type segregation and we then use locational attainment models to determine its "net" effect on the median household income of the neighborhood and on the distance between the neighborhood and the city core. We find a significant interaction between ethnicity, family income and family type which leads us to put in perspective the findings of studies that do not take into account the internal heterogeneity of family types.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore absent fathers' experiences. This involved determining absent fathers' conceptualisation of fatherhood, exploring the psychological well-being of absent fathers, and how absent fathers cope with being absent from their children‟s lives. An ecosystemic approach was employed as the epistemology to understand the participants in terms of organisation of their behaviour in social contexts. Qualitative research was used, and in-depth interviews were conducted to collect the data. The research found that these fathers' experiences of being absent from their children's lives have negatively affected several aspects of their lives, both emotionally and behaviourally. Furthermore, the study concluded that fathers who are absent from their children‟s lives, while aware of the roles they need to play, seem unable to fulfil these roles. Lastly, the absent fathers revealed a tendency to react ambivalently towards their identities as fathers.

Gasa, Velisiwe Goldencia. "Learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary school: a psycho-social perspective." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2432.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to determine the extent of aggressive behaviour exhibited by secondary school learners. Many factors were considered when investigating the problem of aggressive behaviour. The problem was traced from the theorists' perspectives and factors related to the family, school and community. An extensive literature review showed that the above factors contribute to aggressive behaviour among adolescents. In order to support or reject the findings of the literature study, quantitative (questionnaire) research and qualitative research (interviews) were conducted. The results of the quantitative research concerning learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary schools were analysed and interpreted while at the same time a deeper understanding of aggressive behaviour was revealed through qualitative research. The results of the empirical research indicated that the more negative the family climate, school climate, community climate or influence of friends are, or the more negative the emotional self-concept of the adolescent is, the more aggressive the adolescent is, and vice versa. Based on these findings recommendations for the implementation of prevention programmes were made.
