Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of the English Bible upon the people and parishes of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex between 1525 and 1560. It examines two major themes of this impact: firstly, the level of success of the installation of the Great Bible in the parish churches; secondly, the effects of the publication and open reading of the scriptures in the vernacular upon the laity of East Anglia. The first theme explains the reasons for the order to install English scripture in the churches, and the information on the success of this installation provided by prosecution records and churchwardens' accounts. It then introduces an obscure document set, the church-plate certificates produced during the reign of Edward VI, and using these examines the level of installation of the Bible and of the religious injunctions of 1547. The results of the study of the church-plate certificates and churchwardens' accounts are compared with a number of factors, including parish wealth, proximity to towns and agricultural patterns, to determine which types of parishes were more likely to comply. The second theme examines the various responses of laypersons to the appearance of the English Bible in East Anglia. Although much of this section has been derived from records of prosecution, it also studies the effects of the English Bible on diverse events such as Kett's Rebellion of 1549, popular printing in Ipswich and the production of educational primers. This section also looks at the level of scriptural knowledge of laypersons ranging from that of Robert Reynys, a churchreeve of Acle, of the 1430's, to that of the prosecuted Marian Protestants during the 1550's.

Cuncev, Alexandra. "Narratives of 'single homeless people' : reformulating and reinterpreting the homelessness experience." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2015. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/809489/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD study focuses on understanding formerly homeless people’s attitudes to self, their home and their status in the housing system. The study was based on the analysis of twenty-eight narrative interviews with people who had experienced homelessness and who were, at the time of the interview, living in supported housing in a city in the South East of England. The decade 2000-2010, which provides the policy context for the research, was seen as a period of positive developments in homelessness research. In the current study and by using a combined narrative and thematic research approach, I place the single homeless people’s conceptualisations of identity into the Third Space (Shilling 1999, Burkitt 2008) presentation of flexible individualities, but which, despite the challenges and pressures experienced, maintain a strong sense of the core of the self that makes them unique. My approach to the homeless people’s identity formation accepts the possibility of a decentralisation of identities in contemporary societies; however, I maintain that there are parts of own identity which persist in individuals’ definitions of self and ultimately help ground the homeless individual. I acquiesce that identities can go through changes, imposed by personal circumstances and social context, and that these changes can lead to variations in the elements which retain value for the individual. However, despite all these changes, the homeless interviewees continued to refer to their self as easily recognised – retaining the same main qualities which belonged to the self before the homelessness experience. It was this strength of self that the interviewees ultimately wanted to transmit to the interviewer and it is this strength of self which places their conceptualisations of identity in the ‘Third Space’ approach. The study was placed at a crossroads for homelessness policies which had passed through a series of changes through two different governments: New Labour and the Coalition Government. As well as highlighting areas that required improvement, the study showed that a holistic perspective towards the homeless person, taking into account their experiences before, after and during the homelessness event and acknowledging the value of training and unpaid employment, could lead to policy and practice which is closer to individuals’ perceived identities and routes out of homelessness.

Wilson, Philip B. "Being single in the Church : insights from history and personal stories." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.288401.

Abstract:
Today the numbers of single people in Britain are mushrooming.  It is predicted that by 2020 they will form 40% of the total population.  This thesis seeks to discover why this is happening and to learn from the personal stories of single people to see how the Church may better minister to this vital section of society. After a brief historical survey of Irish monasticism and the impact of the Reformation on the nuclear industrial family, the thesis discusses the impact of the Victorian author and of the Hollywood film industry on traditional notions of romance and marriage.  These are contrasted sharply with prevailing contemporary post-modern views where relationships are often portrayed as temporal and vacuous. The thesis then enters the arena of real world research, exploring the issues of singleness with fifteen Christians - men and women of various ages, most of whom are single, although a number are (or were) married.  The primary focus of the interviewer is “What is it like being a single person in the Church today?”  The answers are wide-ranging and fascinating, touching on a number of important contemporary topics, such as loneliness, internet dating and sexuality.  Of particular note is the research suggesting that many church-going single people do not feel supported or understood by their faith communities.  In fact some find church to be one of the most isolating places of all. The author carefully weights up the evidence (including the biblical materials) and in the final chapter offers a strategic model for the contemporary Church.  Where there is a humble community which values friendship and encourages people to discover their own gifts to serve God, then all of God’s people - and not merely single people - are most likely to flourish.

Kim, Jung Jin. ""Declare among the nations" : an examination of the biblical motif of verbal declaration by God's people." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=225786.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been little attention to the question as to whom the NT documents speak of as being actively involved in declaring God among the nations, although some scholars recently have paid heed to this theme in the Pauline letters. Also, scholarly work on the question has generally not been carried out in the light of verbal declaration by God's people in the OT, because there is a prevailing idea among scholars that missionary proclamation by God's people simply is not found in the OT. With these in mind, our study first explores whether the OT does or does not deal with verbal declaration by God's people for the sake of leading the nations to him. This leads us to find that some OT passages do indeed concern missionary proclamation by God's people among the nations. Thereafter, our study examines the motif of verbal declaration by the Church in the NT. We focus on the identity of those who are verbal declarers among the nations, considering the relationship between verbal declaration by God's people in the OT and the same by the Church in the NT. Our study argues that, in the identified NT passages, verbal declaration by believers is portrayed in line with the treatment of the same theme, concerning the faithful Israel, in OT documents and that it is believers as a whole who are spoken of as declaring God among the nations for the purpose of bringing them to him.
