Abstract:
Phase change material (PCM) based passive cooling of photovoltaics (PV) can be highly productive due to high latent heat capacity. However, the low rate of heat transfer limits its usefulness. Thus, the presented work aims at the improvement in PV cooling by using finned PCM (FPCM) heat sinks. In the present study, PCM heat sink and FPCM heat sinks were investigated numerically for PV cooling and the extracted heat is used for space heating. 4 kWp PV, PV-PCM and PV-FPCM systems were studied under the weather conditions of Southeast of England. It was observed that the PCM heat sinks can drop the peak PV temperature by 13 K, whereas FPCM heat sinks can enhance the PV cooling by 19 K. The PCM heat sinks can increase the PV electrical efficiency from 13% to 14%. Moreover, the daily electricity generation can be boosted by 7% using PCM and 8% by using FPCM heat sinks. In addition, 7 kWh of thermal output was achieved using the FPCM heat sink, and the overall efficiency of system increased from 13% to 19%.

Abstract:
Analytical, numerical, and experimental results of energy pumping in a strongly inhomogeneous two-degree-of-freedom system are to be presented in this study. The latter is based both on efficient analytical solution and comparative analysis for various types of energetic sinks. Considering the efficient pumping process as damped beating with strong energy transfer, it is shown that we can design the sinks with amplitude-phase variables which provide the most efficient result. In this study, the main types of energetic sinks are to be compared. Computer simulation has confirmed the analytical predictions which had been obtained. Experimental verification of the analytical prediction is considered for a particular type of sink.

Abstract:
High-power electronic devices with multiple heating elements often require temperature uniformity and operating within their functional temperature range for optimal performance. A multi-channel cooling experiment apparatus is developed for studying heat removal inside an electronic device with multiple heat sources. It mainly consists of a computer-controlled pump, a multi-channel heat sink for multi-zone cooling and the apparatus for measuring the temperature and pressure drop. The experimental results show the system and the designed multi-channel heat sink structure can control temperature distribution of electronic device with multiple heat sources by altering coolant flow rate.

In this paper we design a wireless sensor network of Zigbee technology, which consists of sensor nodes, sink nodes and monitoring software design. Through laboratory test, the design of the system is stable and reliable. Although the system can meet the requirements of Zigbee wireless communication hardware, but part of system hardware is relatively simple. If it is applied to the more complex place, we must add the corresponding module in the hardware and software. Adding node function module and the monitoring function in the Zigbee wireless network, it will meet the actual needs.

Abstract:
Concentrating photovoltaic has a major challenge due to the high temperature raised during the process which reduces the efficiency of the solar cell. A multi-layered microchannel heat sink technique is considered more efficient in terms of heat removal and pumping power among many other cooling techniques. Thus, in the current work, multi-layered microchannel heat sink is used for concentrating photovoltaic cooling. The thermal behavior of the system is experimentally and numerically investigated. The results show that in extreme heating load of 30 W/cm2 with heat transfer fluid flow rate of 30 mL/min, increasing the number of layers from one to four reduces the heat source temperature from 88.55 to 73.57 °C. In addition, the single layered MLM heat sink suffers from the highest non-uniformity in the heat source temperature compared to the heat sinks with the higher number of layers. Additionally, the results show that increasing the number of layers from one to four reduces the pressure drop from 162.79 to 32.75 Pa.

Abstract:
Electronic load (e-load) is essential equipment for power converter performance test, where a designated load profile is executed. Electronic load is usually implemented with the analog controller for fast tracking of the load profile reference. In this paper, a low-power low-cost electronic load is proposed. MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors) are used as the power consumption devices, which are regulated to the active region as controlled current-sink. In order to achieve fast transient response using the low-cost digital signal controller (DSC) PWM peripherals, the interleaving PWM method is proposed to achieve active current ripple mitigation. To obtain the system open-loop gain for current-sink operation, an offline digital system identification method, followed by model reduction, is proposed by applying Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) excitation. Pole-zero cancelation method is used in the control system design and later implemented in a DSC. The prototype is built and tested, in which meaningful testing scenarios under constant current-sink mode, pulse current sink mode, and double line-frequency current mode are verified. The experimental results indicate that the proposed e-load can sink pre-programmed current profile with well-attenuated ripple for static and dynamic load testing, and is applicable to fully digitalized power testing equipment.

Abstract:
Thermal design and the working temperature control have been a key factor in the design of electronic devices and system. In this paper, a sort of heat sink collocated with high-power IGBT module, which is commonly used in car-carrying motor control system, is designed based on thermal analysis by means of CFD simulation and computer-aided analyzing, also the influence relations of structure parameters with thermal performance are studied. With thermal control as the overall design objective, structure parameters of heat sink are determined according to the obtained relations. Further, thermal performance of the designed heat sink is simulated and analyzed in CFD software to examine the validity of the design result. In this way, a method of thermal analyzing and structure parameter design for heat sink, which is proved as an efficacious approach, is introduced and can be used to thermal design and analysis for similar products.

Abstract:
The current numerical investigation will examine the effect of an impinging mixed convection air jet on the heat transfer rate of a parallel flat plate heat sink. A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to evaluate the effects of the nozzle diameter d, nozzle-to-target vertical placement H/d, Rayleigh number, and the jet Reynolds number on the heat transfer rates from a discrete heat source. Simulations were performed for a Prandtl number of 0.7 and for Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 5000. The governing equations were solved in the dimensionless form using a commercial finite-volume package. Average Nusselt numbers were obtained, at H/d=3 and two jet diameters, for the bare heat source, for the heat source with a base heat sink, and for the heat source with the finned heat sink. The heat transfer rates from the bare heat source surface have been compared with the ones obtained with the heat sink in order to determine the overall performance of the heat sink in an impingement configuration.

Abstract:
During its operation CPU dissipates undesirable heat. Therefore, heat sink is very essential in modern computing system to absorb extra heat dissipated by the CPU. Forced convection air cooling is common approach. In the present work, a steady-state convective heat transfer process is analyzed for CPU cooling. A rectangular fin heat sink equipped in a computer chassis is numerically investigated and simulated using the software ANSYS CFX. A two-equation based turbulence model is chosen to capture the turbulence of the flow inside the domain. The overall dimension of the heat sink is optimized for three different parameters of the heat sink such as fin quantity, fin height and baseplate thickness. An optimum fin quantity, fin height and baseplate thickness are found, and, respectively. Two different orientations of fins are also compared. Better thermal performance is achieved when the fin channel is perpendicular to the surface parallel to the outlet. The average temperature of the heat sink is found. It is also predicted that the heat sink studied here is capable to keep the CPU temperature underthat is reasonably acceptable.

Full text
Abstract:
In this investigation, a single phase fluid is used to study the coupling between natural convection heat transfer within an enclosure and forced convection through computer covering case to cool the electronic chip. Two working fluids are used (water and air) within a rectangular enclosure and the air flow through the computer case is created by an exhaust fan installed at the back of the computer case. The optimum enclosure size configuration that keeps a maximum temperature of the heat source at a safe temperature level (85℃) is determined. The cooling system is tested for varying values of applied power in the range of 15−40𝑊. The study is based on both numerical models and experimental observations. The numerical work was developed using the commercial software (ANSYS-Icepak) to simulate the flow and temperature fields for the desktop computer and the cooling system. The numerical simulation has the same physical geometry as those used in the experimental investigations. The experimental work was aimed to gather the details for temperature field and use them in the validation of the numerical prediction. The results showed that, the cavity size variations influence both the heat transfer process and the maximum temperature. Furthermore, the experimental results ii compared favourably with those obtained numerically, where the maximum deviation in terms of the maximum system temperature, is within 3.5%. Moreover, it is seen that using water as the working fluid within the enclosure is capable of keeping the maximum temperature under 77℃ for a heat source of 40𝑊, which is below the recommended electronic chips temperature of not exceeding 85℃. As a result, the noise and vibration level is reduced. In addition, the proposed cooling system saved about 65% of the CPU fan power.

Abstract:
The importance of communication is vital in wartime. The capability of having all the position information of the allied and enemy forces in a single Tactical Information Display System (TIDS), maintains a great advantage for deciding what to do before the enemy reacts. A Naval Information Distributing System (NIDS) is developed for building an effective communication infrastructure between the war ships. In the designed network, besides the mobile platforms (ships), some fixed platforms (land stations) are used to transfer the information coming from these mobile platforms to all the other platforms. To demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the Naval Information Distribution System, a discrete event simulation model is developed on a Geographic Information System. The goal of this thesis is to describe and experimentally evaluate an effective and feasible information sharing and routing system for Navy.

Abstract:
The increasing demand for online commerce has led to an increasing demand of autonomous vehicles in the logistics sector. The work in this thesis aims to improve the obstacle detection of autonomous forklifts by using 3D sensor technology. Three different products were compared based on a number of criteria. These criteria were provided by Toyota Material Handling, a manufacturer of autonomous forklifts. One of the products was chosen for developing a prototype. The prototype was used to determine if 3D camera technology could provide sufficient obstacle detection in a warehouse environment. The determination was based on the prototype's performance in a series of tests. The tests ranged from human to pallet detection, and were aimed to fulfill all criteria. The advantages and disadvantages of the chosen camera is presented. The conclusion is that the chosen 3D camera cannot provide sufficient obstacle detection due to certain environmental factors.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the effect of dispersion and Multi Access Interference (MAI) of optical fiber on the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of a Direct Sequence Optical Code Division Multiple Access (DS-OCDMA) network by means of intensity modulation and optical receiver correlators. By using Matlab simulations, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) versus Received Optical Power (ROP) of an OCDMA transmission system can be evaluated with a so-called 7-chip m-sequence for different numbers of system users. This can be done for the ROP versus BER for various lengths of single mode optical fiber by taking into consideration the dispersion effect in the optical fiber. Matlab simulations can be performed in order to illustrate the reduction of the dispersion index gamma, or to visualize different scenarios, e.g., what amount of transmitted power is required in order to obtain a BER of 10-9 when the length of the optical fiber is increased.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As the state-of-the-art technology for energy saving, variable-frequency drives (VFDs) can be applied in nuclear power plant to drive recirculation pumps for coolant flow control. Due to requirement of high reliability, such as in nuclear industry, air natural convection cooling plays an important role in and while brings out a great challenge to thermal management for electronic unit. With an application of single board computer module in control system, another cooling challenge comes from heat flux increase caused from smaller footprint, since all of components, such as processor, chipset, memory and power supply etc., are built into one board. In the paper, cooling technologies for the single board computer module are investigated and developed, focusing on natural air heat convection from heat sink to ambient and heat conduction from board to heat sink. Based on thermal analysis associated with mechanical consideration, one heat sink is used to cool multiple components on the board. Two TIMs (thermal interface materials) and one heat spreader are employed for heat conduction from CPU and chipset to heat sink, respectively. Extrusion heat sink is selected with a comprehensive consideration of cost and thermal performance. A numerical simulation model is developed and validated against testing results. With the verified model, effects of fin arrangement on heat sink performance are analyzed. A study is conducted for optimization of base plate and fin thickness, and accordingly a heat sink is developed for the present application. Environmental conditions, such as temperature, altitude, and humidity etc., are analyzed to investigate their influence on cooling performance of natural air convection.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, a non-traditional variant nonlinear energy sink (NES) is developed for simultaneous vibration suppression and energy harvesting in a broad frequency band. The non-traditional variant NES consists of a cantilever beam attached by a pair of magnets at its free end, a pair of the so-called continuous-contact blocks, and a pair of coils. The beam is placed between the continuous-contact blocks. The constraint of the continuous-contact blocks forces the beam to deflect nonlinearly. Each of the magnet-coil pairs forms an electromagnetic energy harvester. Different from a traditional way that attaches the coils to the primary mass, the developed setup has the coils fixed to the base. First, the developed apparatus is described. Subsequently, the system modeling and parameter identification are addressed. The performance of the apparatus under transient responses is examined by using computer simulation. The results show that the proposed apparatus behaves similarly as the NES with the following features: 1:1 resonance, targeted energy transfer, initial energy dependence, etc.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, rapid growth is seen in computer and server processors in terms of thermal design power (TDP) envelope. This is mainly due to increase in processor core count, increase in package thermal resistance, challenges in multi-chip integration and maintaining generational performance CAGR. At the same time, several other platform level components such as PCIe cards, graphics cards, SSDs and high power DIMMs are being added in the same chassis which increases the server level power density. To mitigate cooling challenges of high TDP processors, mainly two cooling technologies are deployed: Liquid cooling and advanced air cooling. To deploy liquid cooling technology for servers in data centers, huge initial capital investment is needed. Hence advanced air-cooling thermal solutions are being sought that can be used to cool higher TDP processors as well as high power non-CPU components using same server level airflow boundary conditions. Current air-cooling solutions like heat pipe heat sinks, vapor chamber heat sinks are limited by the heat transfer area, heat carrying capacity and would need significantly more area to cool higher TDP than they could handle. Passive two-phase thermosiphon (gravity dependent) heat sinks may provide intermediate level cooling between traditional air-cooled heat pipe heat sinks and liquid cooling with higher reliability, lower weight and lower cost of maintenance. This paper illustrates the experimental results of a 2U thermosiphon heat sink used in Intel reference 2U, 2 node system and compare thermal performance using traditional heat sinks solutions. The objective of this study was to showcase the increased cooling capability of the CPU by at least 20% over traditional heat sinks while maintaining cooling capability of high-power non-CPU components such as Intel’s DIMMs. This paper will also describe the methodology that will be used for DIMMs serviceability without removing CPU thermal solution, which is critical requirement from data center use perspective.

Abstract:
New technological advancements in electronic circuits and computer engineering have increased the need for better cooling systems; liquid cooling of electronic components seems to offer a solution for this problem. An important part of such solution is to design a compact cooling channel system that offers a uniform temperature distribution over the part to be cooled. This work investigates the application of constructal theory for the design of a compact double sided cooling pad for such applications. Fluid enters the two networks, on the top and bottom of the pad, via a single inlet inside a separating layer between them. The heated fluid then collected at the periphery of the channel network. An exit port is then attached to a collection well for the exit flow. Numerical method is used to redesign flow passage dimensions inside the heat sink and optimize fluid outlet layout to ensure uniform heat removal and temperature distribution in the pad. A sample model of the actual device is built; using advanced 3D printing technology, for flow study. Flow pattern, temperature distribution, and the resulted pressure drop for the designed heat sink are presented for different flow rates.

Abstract:
As reduction in the size of electronics creates demand for smaller, less expensive and faster-to-produce spacecraft, the use of high heat flux electronics or advanced nuclear propulsion systems will increase the stress on the thermal subsystem. This work presents a thermal management solution to this problem using liquid-cooled microchannel heat sinks. First, a simple computer model is used to illustrate the need for an atypical cooling method when high-heat flux electronics are used. Second, a thermal/fluid model of microchannel heat sinks is developed and applied to address the satellite thermal need. The total thermal resistances and pressure drops show excellent comparison with published experimental and analytical results. Finally, the model of the microchannel heat sink is optimized to remove 25 W/cm2 over a footprint of 3.7cm2. The mass flow rate needed was significantly lower (almost 5–10 times lower) when compared to other published results, which means that micro-pumps available on the market will be sufficient. The integration of the microchannel system with the satellite is also discussed.
