Reck, Casey M. "Laying Bare the Sins of the Father: Exploring White Fathers in Post-Apartheid Literature." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2010. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/63.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis is an exploration of white fathers in three post-apartheid novels: Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples, Nadine Gordimer's The House Gun, and J. M. Coetzee's Disgrace. By examining the link between private white hegemonic masculinity and the apartheid government, the Thesis analyzes the transitional process as these men try to adopt less authoritative identities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
These poems represent the vanishing world of the South and that tale is perpetuated by a series of fathers and sons which often act as the narrators. Each father passes his knowledge of language, hunting, lore, loss, and even sins onto the sons who repeat the tradition. The voice and age of the narrators evolves from the heavily dialectical to a more educated and contemplative voice as the thesis progresses.

Armange, Marcos Augusto. "O perdão de Deus : um análise sobre a angústia de culpa e a idealização do eu em Lucas 15.11-32 a partir da compreensão de paternidade na perspectiva teológica e psicanalítica." Faculdades EST, 2007. http://tede.est.edu.br/tede/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=58.

Abstract:
The goal of this work is to analyze the human existential conflict that appears in the tension between the demands of an absolutized authority (Law) found in the psychoanalytic view and in the theological view in the representation of the father, superego, God and the sin as a theological and anthropological category, as a condition of every existence, and at the same time a voluntary act that makes it impossible to meet the legal expectations of a demanding authority. It highlights the classical manifestations of this conflict: the feeling of gilt, understood here as anguish of gilt, of the one who cannot meet the demands; and the pride understood as the idealization of the self, of the one who understands himself or herself as a person able to meet the expectations of the authority. Gilt and pride are factors of destruction of the human being according to the theological and psychoanalytic perspectives. In order to solve this conflict it wants to examine the image of Father that Jesus presents in his relationship with God. It understands that this representation, originated in forgiveness, is a paradigm in the relativization of the absolutized figure, in the surpassing of sin, for the notion of a new justice, for the healing of gilt and for a real image of the human being not based on pride.

Carney, Peter D. "The seven deadly sins." FIU Digital Commons, 2002. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2049.

Full text
Abstract:
This recital was created with the intention of reconnecting fundamental elements of music that have been estranged from jazz in the last 20 years. The uses of themes, experimentation, original composition, spirituality and social criticism or social commitment have all been pushed aside in the present state of jazz. These elements of music which helped jazz and its popularity have fallen under the shadow of improvisational virtuosity in today’s jazz music. Today jazz is saturated with various personalities, opinions, and world cultures. This new spectrum of possibilities has created numerous frontiers for the future of improvisation. At the same time this new world of music without limitations, specifics, and stylistic constraints is leaving a new generation with unanswered questions about the next step in the evolution of jazz. The Seven Deadly Sins was created as a personal attempt to distill the vital essence of jazz today and present it through a thematic device to a diverse listening audience. The Seven Deadly Sins was composed through the use of singular jazz vocabulary. This limited vocabulary is a personal expression of my outlook on the essence of jazz language and the world jazz explains. Since The Seven Deadly Sins is based on a language, the use of an all-encompassing theme seemed an appropriate step in the direction of creating a greater holistic project. For this means I chose to use the seven deadly sins, a theme created from Christianity in the Middle Ages, and used by numerous writers before this piece. Today, musicians are hostile toward conservative/traditional players, experimentalists, and all types of players in between. This skepticism toward differences has grown out of a survivalist mentality in the present music environment. Jazz today is a style in anarchy. The range of expression has been stretched to include Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Braxton, and everyone in between. Musicians who survive today are required to master the fundamentals of be-bop, fusion, latin, pop, sight-reading, MIDI technology, and even classical music. As a result these conditions are creating a generation of moderates that is unable to leap in any one direction, and skeptical of attempts that aren’t well rounded. In the same way that politicians fight for the moderate voters to win an election, jazz musicians are campaigning for the moderate listening audience to stay employed. Out of this interpretation of the present music environment I created this concert as an answer to the questions of the present and future state of jazz.

Johns, Schneller Sylvia M. D. "The Sins of the Mothers." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2015. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2107.

Full text
Abstract:
In The Sins of the Mothers, the main character, Bridgette, suffers a mental breakdown after the death of her three-month-old baby, Celeste, from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). She develops severe obsessive-compulsive disorder with the delusion that the child is trapped in Limbo because she was never baptized. The delusion haunts Bridgette, and she suffers brief dissociative episodes with visual hallucinations. Bridgette hears of a church in Provence where, according to a seventeenth century legend, children who died without baptism returned briefly to life under the intersession of Saint Pantaleon were baptized and gained heaven. She decides to exhume Celeste’s body and bring the corpse to Provence for the ceremony. She plans to find a priest to baptize the baby and bury Celeste in the churchyard. After unsuccessful attempts by her dysfunctional family to thwart her plans, Bridgette smuggles the ancestral christening dress and an attached piece of the baby’s hair to Provence where she fails to bury the dress in the now deconsecrated church. In the remainder of the novel, the reader learns of her attempts to reconcile with the results of her actions and heal from her mental illness.

Fogielman, Charles-Antoine. "Les deux traités à Euloge d'Evagre le Pontique : introduction, édition critique, traduction, commentaire et notes." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE5008/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work consists of an introduction, an edition, and a French translation of two texts which stand out, to a certain degree, within the Evagrian opus. The treatise addressed to the monk Eulogius, along with its appendix describing the Vices opposed to Virtues, which appears adjoined to the former in a majority of manuscripts, display stylistic and doctrinal characteristics which have often called its authenticity into question. A detailed study of the manuscript testimony, both of the Greek original and of the various oriental versions (Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Georgian and Ethiopic), has allowed us to confirm the treatises' authenticity and to establish their text reliably, as it can be seen to have suffered considerable turmoil during its transmission. Aside from material damage, Evagrius' works, in the Greek medium, were mainly distributed under the name of Nilus of Ancyra, owing to Evagrius' condemnation for alleged Origenism, at the council of Constantinople II in 553. The accompanying commentary aims at addressing the proximity of Evagrian thought with the legacy of Origen, as well as highlighting the formation, formulation, and posterity of that most remarkable of Evagrian doctrines, the list of vices, and the philosophical and ascetic context wherein it originated

Yancey, Jason Edward. "Dark Laughter: Liminal Sins in Quevedo's Entremeses." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195236.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates two areas rarely treated in Early Modern studies. First, it explores the origins, functions and importance of the entremes as a performance genre historically relegated to what Victor Turner has called the "liminal" spaces of social and scholarly discourse. These marginalized places of ambiguity in between one space and another provide the artist with a less restrictive creative setting in which to explore the otherwise difficult and even unmentionable social themes. Literally placed in between acts of the comedia performance experience, as well as chronologically placed in between the medieval pageant theater and the emerging early modern theater houses, the entremes serves as an entertaining breed of performance monster, building upon a thematic foundation "betwixt and between" acceptable and objectionable forms of theater.Second, the dissertation examines in detail the 12 lesser-known entremeses of Francisco de Quevedo as examples of liminality in the development of early modern theater practices. Specifically, the study analyzes these theater pieces as they subscribe to three categories of cardinal sin: desires of the ego (pride, wrath and sloth); desires of ownership (greed and envy); and desires of the body (lust and gluttony). As a result, this work hopes to demonstrate the aesthetic value of the interlude and the ways in which Quevedo's various manifestations of this liminal genre, based heavily on the construct of sin, both complement and contradict the model of the entremes as established by his predecessors.

Agar, Lesley. "Shakespeare and the seven deadly sins : a necessary evil." Thesis, University of Hull, 2016. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:15891.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the idea that using the religious, moral and literary construct of the Seven Deadly Sins as an interpretative key to Shakespeare’s plays may provide further insight into his dramatic art. It has involved reviewing and developing the body of research which maintains that medieval literary and cultural references continued to influence and adapt to new cultural, literary and religious contexts in early modern literature, more specifically, that of Shakespeare. The development of the Sins in a cultural, literary and religious context is outlined, exploring the extent to which they survived the impact of the Reformation on Catholic imagery and continued to be a common frame of reference in post-Reformation literature. It considers the likely early influence of the Sins on Shakespeare as a writer, exploring the idea of a personal commonplace book as an early and accessible resource of Sins-related classical and secular references, a resource shared with most of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean audiences. Finally the thesis seeks to provide a reading of a representative collection of Shakespeare’s plays chronologically; according to genre, and by individual sins and virtues, using the religious, cultural and literary lexicon of the Sins, and to demonstrate the way in which the Sins were deployed to provide dramatic interpretation of source material, as well as psychological insight into character. It is the contention of this thesis that the popular, semi-secular nature of the Sins and the way in which they became embedded in most aspects of art and culture enabled them to slide beneath the bar of Protestant reform to provide continuity of moral and religious reference and, more importantly, to remain in the collective cultural memory of Shakespeare and his audiences as a ‘polemically safe’ resource through which to explore issues of good and evil, salvation and damnation.

Robbins, Nathan Lovell. "The Father Motive: Predicting the Impact of Father Attitudes on Involvement." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6524.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects that a man's attitudes towards fathering have on the level of involvement with his children. Of particular interest was whether fathering attitudes moderated some of the more consistent predictors of involvement, such as relationship quality, maternal gatekeeping, mother's and father's employment hours, a man's history with his own father, family structure, and child characteristics. A sample of 2300 men was used to evaluate the effects of fathering attitudes on engagement and warmth among children ages 2 to 8 and 9 to 11. Results indicate an inconsistent main effect between fathering attitudes and the types of involvement among the two age groups. However, moderated multiple regression analysis revealed that, in many instances, fathering attitudes completely mitigated the effect of several of the traditional predictors of involvement. Among the younger group, men with high fathering attitudes maintained high levels of engagement despite poor history with their own father and high levels of work hours, and engagement increased as maternal employment hours increased. Warmth among these men also remained unchanged at high levels of maternal gatekeeping and low levels of relationship quality. In the older group, high father attitudes mitigated the effects of relationship quality and fathers' work hours on warmth. Attitudes did not moderate engagement among the older group.

Abstract:
Relationships between body dissatisfaction, dieting methods, father absence, and puberty timing were investigated in this study. Participants included adolescent females from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health. Logistic regression results indicated that girls without a biological father in the home were significantly more likely to have an early onset of puberty than on-time or late. Girls who experienced early puberty exhibited higher levels of body dissatisfaction, but didn't use more dieting methods. Early onset girls more likely used dieting methods if their biological father was present than absent; however, no significant difference in body dissatisfaction was shown. A negative relationship with fathers indicated more body dissatisfaction. None of the attained findings were found when the biological mother was absent, and having a stepfather did not seem to matter. Evidence was revealed that fathers play a role in their daughters' view of their own bodies.

Although capitalism is usually seen as the culprit for many of the environmental issues society faces today, it is not necessarily at fault. The Seven Deadly Sins of Sustainability: Pride, Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Wrath, Lust, and Envy, are the underlying reasons why capitalism fails in the face of sustainability. Through recognition of these human vices, better strategies can be used to address environmental issues through leveraging capitalistic economic solutions.

Downes, Kathleen M. "Contagious Deadly Sins: Yellow Fever in Nineteenth-Century New Orleans Literature." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2015. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2065.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the nineteenth century, New Orleans was repeatedly plagued by yellow fever epidemics. In this paper, cultural representations of yellow fever are considered in three novels: Baron Ludwig Von Reizenstein’s The Mysteries of New Orleans (1854-1855), George Washington Cable’s The Grandissimes (1880), and Mollie Evelyn Moore Davis’ The Queen’s Garden (1900). Because the etiology was unknown during the nineteenth century, yellow fever becomes a floating signifier on which to project the ills they observed in New Orleans society. Yellow fever thus becomes a representation of loose sexual mores, as well as a divinely retributive punishment for slavery, or a sign of adherence to an unequal, antiquated, aristocratic and un-American social system. Yellow fever, in these texts, exposes the struggles with race and racial superiority and illuminates tensions between groups of whites as New Orleans became an American city.

Abstract:
This study is an outcome evaluation and examines the goals and objectives of the Columbia Community Connections, Inc. Father to Father Men’s Services Program in Decatur, Georgia. The program is also known simply as the Father to Father (FtF) Program. It provides parenting education, peer support and advocacy for fathers. The study was based on the premise that programmatic effectiveness is attributed to the implementation and accomplishment of program goals. The seven program goals were the independent variables and the dependent variable was the effectiveness of the program. A survey was administered to participants in the Father to Father Program via the telephone. Data analysis was done with SPSSWIN. Frequency distribution and analysis of T-test were used to analyze the data. The researcher found that five out of seven program goals were being accomplished effectively. Recommendations were made for the other two program goals. The conclusions from the findings suggest that Father to Father is working towards accomplishing each program goal. The results show high percentages and significant differences in fathers after participation in the program. Increased networking and promotion of the program will ensure the accomplishment of goals that the program is not meeting.

Dal, Borgo Maria Manuela Wagner. "Thucydides : father of game theory." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1507820/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I interpret Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War utilizing models of game theory to distil the abstract strategic structures that Thucydides illuminates. It is possible by close analysis of the narrative to extract an implicit descriptive theory embedded in the narrative, never made explicit but a consistent presence wherever characters, groups and nations interact. Game theory in its informal structure (i.e. without deploying the full formal apparatus of mathematics) offers a valuable extension to narratology, a narrative theory already successfully introduced into Classical studies. The thesis studies Thucydides’ conception of the agon (contest/competition) in its basic framework from simple strategic and dynamic games to games with boundedly rational players. I argue that Thucydides describes a tropology of interaction by inferring motivations from observed actions. Chapter 1 and 2 discuss Thucydides’ method of reading the minds of historical agents to explore historical causation in simultaneous move and sequential move environments, respectively. Chapter 3 discusses agents with incomplete information and also agents who take irrational decisions. Thucydides allows room in his narrative for players to miscalculate or make conjectures when faced with an interactive environment. He writes history as a description of similar types of potentially recurrent events and sequences linked by a causal chain, whose outcomes are only probabilistically predictable. Whilst analysing different types of interactions, the study aims to explore different game theoretic models based on Thucydides’ tropology of interaction, in order to identify in the final chapter new research directions for rational actor models as well as stochastic environments for the benefit of political science.

Remic, Andy. "The Ghost of Your Father." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2018. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/10442/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis contains a creative text, along with a poetics of the work. The Ghost of Your Father is the story of unusual childhood adventures in the small village of Ramsbottom, Lancashire, with chapters also dedicated to exploring the forests, mountains, rivers and family members of Trebija, Yugoslavia, during the long summer holidays of the 1980s. Remic’s father, Nikolas, was a child of Yugoslavia, enlisted in the army at the age of seventeen and captured by Germans during WWII. He subsequently escaped from a POW camp, was rescued by US troops, and brought to the UK where he joined the RAF and met the author’s mother, Sally, a Liverpudlian working in the NAAFI. The thesis is a childhood memoir of clashing worlds: village life in Lancashire, contrasted with village life in Trebija, Yugoslavia, and is infused with the new dawning age of the 1980s computer revolution, and the author’s conflicting desire to become both an author and computer game programmer. A strange merging of country life and 8-bit technology, of Tolkien fantasy novels and differing cultures and customs, the text reveals these two very different worlds, searching for linking threads, and is the source of what made Remic the genre novelist he became. The text explores life in Ramsbottom and life in Slovenija – and presents childhood adventures in the 1980s, and those same places and faces experienced a quarter of a century later. The text contains a travel section detailing an account of the events that occurred when Remic returned to Slovenija to meet his long, lost, beloved Aunty Mary, taking his children on that same voyage of discovery he experienced as a boy, and which he believes shaped his imagination and fired his creativity to create a genre novelist working in the field today. Part memoir, part travelogue, part exploration and decoding of a child’s-eye view of a world filled with fantasy monsters, pixellated graphics, mountain-top escapades and small-town haunted houses, The Ghost of Your Father is a book of contrasts, of exploring imagination, creativity, ethics, and the very twisted essence of subjective memory. It is a story of a child then, and a child now, based on memories, interviews and new experiences. It is a fictional representation of a factual past, and a factual exploration of a fictional present. It is the truth, perhaps not as it was, but as it might have been. The poetics is an exploration of the writing process of The Ghost of Your Father. It’s an investigation of why, and how, Remic decided to create this text, examining contextualisation, where this work sits in the field of contemporary memoir, reflecting on the process of writing the text, including how Remic was inspired and arrived at conclusions over memory, tone and research for form, and ultimately concluding with how this project has altered Remic’s perspective of research, creative writing, and how it has informed Remic’s genre writing and creative writing as a whole.

Boothroyd, Lynda. "Father absence, attraction and development." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14199.

Full text
Abstract:
Since Draper & Harpending (1982) proposed that father absence would be associated with a shift in reproductive strategy, a body of literature has accumulated supporting their claims. This thesis explores further aspects of father absence theory, utilising computergraphic facial processing. It opens with an overview of both father absence theory (Chapter 1) and the Evolutionary Psychology of attraction (Chapter 2). Part 1 Part 1 explores the meaning of masculinity in partner choice scenarios. Male facial masculinity co-varied with facial age but not apparent facial health both in tenns of women's preferences (Study 1) and women's direct perceptions (Study 2). This suggested that masculinity in male faces is not a cue to immunocompetence health status as other authors have suggested, In Study 3, while masculine faces were perceived as more dominant than feminised faces, they were otherwise considered poorer quality partners. It was suggested that masculinity was attractive because of a 'sexy son' mechanism (dominance increasing offspring reproductive success), which was traded off against the anti-social traits associated with masculinity. Part 2 Studies 4, 5 and 6 found that father absence or poor relationships with the parents generally reduced masculinity preference and age preference (although in Study 5, this effect was moderated by relationship status). This contradicted predictions made from traditional father absence literature (that father absence should be associated with a short term strategy and therefore masculinity preference). Sociological explanations were discounted as family background did not relate to the traits women said they desired in a partner (Study 7). Altogether these results raised questions about the attractiveness and self-esteem of father absent females. Part 3 therefore investigated the physical development of these females. Part 3 Study 8 found that marital difficulties between parents were associated with an increase in perceived facial masculinity in both male and female offspring's faces, a decrease in facial attractiveness and increased weight and waist-hip ratio in women. Study 9 found that levels of progesterone were inversely related to quality of parental relationship. The overarching conclusions of the thesis were that there appears to be an effect' of physical masculinisation which is associated with father absence. This masculinisation may be the predicator for previously observed father absence effects, and the results in Part 2. As such, attachment based explanations of father absence effects (such as Belsky et al, 1991) may be redundant.

Abstract:
This study aimed at searching in some of Freud s writings the author s view of the paternal figure and its relevance to the individual s subjectivity. We emphasize the theoretical developments regarding the formulation and the importance of the Oedipus complex - both male and female - to the formation of the superego, as well as the importance or narcissism in the I construction and in the identification process. We also highlight the changes occurred in social environment, from Freudian to present time, which had raised questions about the family, with changes in the relationship between men and women, and in the functions of each gender, causing the decline of paternal figure in new family configurations. In addition, we present new approaches on paternity, paternal function and father s place in the context of multiple family configurations in contemporaneity.
