AbstractThe rise of the provincial rights movement in the generation after Confederation forms an important chapter in Canadian constitutionalism. In their attempts to understand the provincial rights movement, however, historians and political scientists have paid insufficient attention to the precise constitutional doctrine that was developed to thwart the centralizing designs of Sir John A. Macdonald. This article shows that the sources of this provincialist constitutional doctrine can be found in the Confederation settlement itself. It further shows how the provincial rights movement subse

In 2018, the City of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada removed a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald from the grounds of City Hall. As Canada’s first prime minister, Macdonald is both revered for the role he played in Confederation and vilified for enacting and promoting racist if not culturally genocidal policy initiatives aimed at destroying Indigenous cultures in the last part of the 19th century. Set in the context of truth and reconciliation politics playing out across the country, this article explains the removal of the monument and the social reactions it provoked, using the sociologies o

The British North America Act of 1867 (Constitution Act of 1867) is then viewed against Sir John Macdonald's misinterpretation of the American Civil War. This thesis is a biography of Sir John Hall, a prominent New Zealand pioneer, pastoralist and politician. The study of his life provides insight into the colony's wider history but there is a significant personal dimension to this biography. It begins with an examination of Hall's childhood and early career in Britain and Europe, showing how his family and social context moulded his character and established habits and attitudes which remained with him for the rest of his life. Later chapters reveal how he made his fortune and explore his relationship with his wife and children, his response t

This thesis approaches the ways George MacDonald viewed and represented Victorian society in his novels by analysing select social issues which he felt compelled to address. Chapter One introduces the thesis. It contains a review of critical commentary on MacDonald’s work, as well as discussions on his non-fictional texts and essays, industrialism, and the great rural-urban divide of the nineteenth century. Chapter Two concentrates on MacDonald’s representations of the city in Robert Falconer (1868), The Vicar’s Daughter (1872), and Weighed and Wanting (1882) by underscoring parallels between

Hip implants have successfully been employed since the 1900’s. With the development of the total hip arthroplasty (THA) in 1960 by Sir John Charnley (Mohamed N. Rahaman, 2007), Since then the development of wear resistant materials has been extensive and improved the life time of hip prosthesis. (V. Banchet, 2007) THA wholly reconstructs the hip joint and enables joint kinematics. Components include an acetabulum liner and cup and femoral head and neck. Common combinations included metal on plastic, metal on metal, and ceramic on ceramic head and cup compnents.

There has been little change in the formulation of bone cements since Sir John Charnley first developed them in the 1970s. Bone cements are methacrylate based systems packaged in two components [1]. The powder component contains a mixture of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), methyl methacrylate-styrene-copolymer, and a radio opacifier (either barium sulfate or zirconium oxide) [2]. The second component is a liquid monomer typically containing methyl methacrylate, N, N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (activator), and hydroquinone. There are a variety of model ices and test techniques adopted by model test facilities. Most often, the clients would ask: “How well can you predict the full scale performance from your model test results?” Model-scale/full-scale correlation becomes an important litmus test to validate a model test technique and its results. This paper summarizes the model-scale/full-scale correlation performed on model test data generated at the National Research Council - Ocean, Coastal, and River Engineering’s (NRC-OCRE) test facility in St. John’s.
