Abstract:

Abstract:
This study investigates the attitudes and preferences of advanced learners of the Siraiki language towards Siraiki dictionaries available in Pakistan. Descriptive in nature, the study is quantitative approach and has employed survey questionnaire as tool of data collection. The main objectives of the study are: a) to identify the attitudes of advanced learners of the Siraiki language towards using a dictionary for learning a language, b) to identify the types of dictionaries that advanced learners of the Siraiki language prefer most and c) to identify the preferences of advanced learners of the Siraiki language towards their dictionaries and to identify their hurdles and problems towards dictionary use. The subjects of this study comprised 230 advanced learners of Siraiki (138 male and 92 female) from 18 to 24 years of age. The number of respondents at graduate level was 212 and 18 at masters’ level respectively. The subjects of the study were selected through purposive sampling technique. This study reported that 58 out of 230 respondents owned dictionaries. Majority of the respondents reported that dictionary use was a time-consuming task. Siraiki dictionaries were found deficient in organizing lexemes in canonical form, provision of collocations and definitions. Most of the respondents used dictionaries for meaning, followed by pronunciation, spelling, grammar, examples and notes on usage notes respectively. All the students were willing on getting training on dictionary use.

Abstract:
This paper applies textual analysis and an ethnographic approach to explore the role of women within the Siraiki cultural and literary domain. The debate about Siraiki as an ethno linguistic identity is a postcolonial development in Pakistan. Siraiki language speakers identify themselves being distinct from any other ethnic group in Pakistan. Based on this claim they resist the hegemonic control of Punjabi-Mohajir over their resources, area and disregard towards their literary and cultural tradition. The demand for a new Siraiki province within the federation of Pakistan by bifurcating Punjab is an outcome of this lack of political recognition. We contend that due to social taboos and patriarchal pressures, these women are experiencing suppression that results in limited visibility within mainstream literary circles. The lack of both appreciation and mentorship for their creative outputs has resulted in the dearth of literature produced by Siraiki women writers. The objective of this study is to indicate how this oppression can result in an enactment of power through creative writing. In order to substantiate our argument, we rely on selected works by Iqbal Bano, Shabnam Awan and Mussarat Kalanchvi. In the process, we also attempt to theorize an indigenous manifestation of feminist intent of these Siraiki writers as Trimti

Abstract:
The history of class conflict in Siraiki Waseeb is as old as the Indus Valley Civilization. The history of Indus Valley is interpreted as a conflict of invading nations. The Siraiki Waseeb can be called the center of the valley. The class system of the Siraiki Waseeb is influenced by the arrival of various nations. The ancient Australoid tribes, the Dravidians and the Aryans had a profound effect on the civilization here. This division is wrapped not only in economic but also in the social cloak of religion. Along with the division of rich and poor, the system of division between pure and impure, masters and slaves, feudal, landlord and ‘kammi’ has sustained itself parallel to the caste system. The roots of the class system are still embedded in the Waseeb. These class factors have been analyzed in the article under discussion.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the origin, mechanism and mobilization of ethnic nationalism in Pakistan. From its inception in 1947, Pakistan has suffered from a serious lack of ethnic consensus in the face of nation-building and state-consolidation projects of the Center. The ethnic movements and parties of Pakistan are an important reflection of societal resistance against the perceived hegemony of the state. At present, Pakistan is home to several ethnic movements underlying the broad disaffection with the policies of the state. The focus of this dissertation will be on two of these movements, i.e. the Sindhi and Siraiki ethnic nationalisms. Going beyond the study of nationalist movements and leaders, this dissertation will also engage with the broader currents of party politics and electoral behavior in Sindh and south Punjab

Full text
Abstract:
Mogrosides, the main active components in S. grosvenorii SWINGLE, are considered to be some 250 times sweeter than sucrose and to possess several medicinal attributes. Previous isolation processes used large quantities of toxic solvent that resulted in toxic residues of organic solvent in this high value food. Supercritical fluids fulfill the requirements of non-toxicity, recycle ability, and useful solvent characteristics. The work presented in this thesis is directed to the extraction of mogrosides from the powdered S. grosvenorii concentrate (SG) and the crude extract after resin treatment (MG) with sub critical water and supercritical CO2.
Because no source of mogroside V reference material is available commercially, the first objective of this research was to isolate mogroside V of sufficient purity that it could be crystallized. This objective was achieved by selecting suitable eluates from resin chromatography coupled with preparative thin layer chromatography (TLC). Crystalline white isolate was further characterized by 13C-NMR and by MS and determined to be mogroside V, which was suitable as a reference material for subsequent experiments.
The process variables for both sub critical water and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction were evaluated and optimized so that conclusions could be formulated regarding the relative merits of the two proposed extraction methods. The efficiency of extraction was determined spectrophotometrically based on the recovery of mogrosides from the starting material following the vanillin-HClO4 method.
When compared with Soxhlet solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction with either sub critical water or supercritical CO2 provided improved recoveries and consumed less organic solvent. In addition, the purity of the extracts differed greatly. For identical SG samples, sub critical water extraction was demonstrated to be more efficient (62.4% recovery) compared with 37.0% recovery by EtOH modified scCO2 extraction or 5.1% for Soxhlet extraction with hexane.

White, Heather Elizabeth. "Sirani, Iole and Protofeminism in Early Modern Bologna." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7517.

Full text
Abstract:
Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665), a Bolognese artist, significantly contributed to the Italian protofeminist tradition through her three depictions of the classical figure Iole. These images are drastically different than other depictions of the time period because Sirani shows Iole as an isolated figure removed from her turbulent relationship with Hercules. By focusing on Iole as an individual, Sirani allowed Iole to be seen away from the male gaze; in doing so, Iole encompassed masculine characteristics while maintaining her sovereignty and femininity. Sirani's paintings of the strong and confident Iole are clear evidence that not only was Sirani inspired by the receptive environment in which she was raised, but she was also actively empowering women through her art and advancing the protofeminist tradition in early modern Italy.

Abstract:
Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665) was a Bolognese 17th century women painter. Bologna was considered a philogynous city, since many Bolognese women were famous for their erudition and for being laureates in literature and sciences. Elisabetta Sirani was not an exception, she was a well-educated and cultured woman whose occupation as a painter was mostly seen as a virile one. Elisabetta Sirani’s profile presents both a biographical and iconographic interest ; a double orientation that closely relates art to literature. Elisabetta Sirani was part of history too as her character was reintrepreted by various literary genres. The 19th century revealed the reinterpretation of a chronicle into a myth

Rocco, Patricia. "Performing female artistic identity : Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani and the allegorical self-portrait in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Bologna." Thesis, McGill University, 2006. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=99389.

Abstract:
Artemisia Gentileschi's self-portrait, Allegory of Painting, painted in 1630, has activated a complex discussion of female artistic identity in which performance is tied to concerns with status. This thesis addresses an earlier history of development in allegorical self-portraiture in the work of the sixteenth-century Bolognese artist, Lavinia Fontana, and her seventeenth-century successor, Elisabetta Sirani. I argue that the female artist's negotiation for status was played out in the transformation from a more official mode of self presentation, such as Fontana's Self-Portrait at the Keyboard , to a deliberate performative shift of embodied personification in her self-portrait as Judith with the head of Holofernes and her later self portraits as St. Barbara in the Apparition of the Madonna and Child to the Five Saints. This negotiation of artistic status continues with Sirani's self-portraits in Judith and the Allegory of Painting, and as what I suggest are more ambiguous and ambitious representations of anti-heroines, Cleopatra and Circe. I also discuss the important role that the emerging genre of biography plays in the female artist's struggle for status. The thesis explores the shift in visual conventions in relation to discourses of artistic identity, gender and genre---such as the donnesca mano---that circulated in Renaissance historiography in Italy, and more specifically, in the cultural milieu of Bologna.
