Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyses the types of feminine identity represented in Adelaida Garcia Morales' works. It examines as well how these subjectivities are constituted and points out that this Spanish writer's narrative proposes alternative symbolic representations of Spanish women and new feminine identities who are not framed according to patriarchal standards. Furthermore, this study highlights how Garcia Morales' novels and short stories constitute what it has been labelled as "fiction of debate". That is, they represent different ideas and feminist concepts proposed by the two main Spanish feminist approaches: feminism of difference and feminism of equality. The texts analyzed in these theses provide a valuable channel of communication, and create a forum for both airing and debating the main concerns of Spanish women and issues at stake during the 80's and 90's. This study will follow a literary feminist approach, which focuses on the historical and social frameworks of Garcia Morales work's production as well as contextualizes her narrative with reference to the recent Spanish social and political history. Therefore, this study points out the dialectical relationship between texts and ideological structures, which allows an account of the interrelationships between literature and feminist politics.

Abstract:
Recent books by Alan Bloom and Alasdair MacIntyre have argued that liberal individualism is inadequate to a full moral existence. Bloom claims that our lives could be so much richer if we recognized the creative force of 'prejudices' and acknowledged that culture needs just such a creative force if it is to flourish. MacIntyre claims that individual identity is embedded in the particular cultural tradition of which each individual is a part. He goes on to develop the argument that each person's moral understanding is necessarily bounded by his own tradition and that moral membership in some such tradition is a precondition of being able to understand the moral arguments of any tradition. MacIntyre also argues that the language of moral debate suffers from meaning incommensurability because the underlying rationale for the arguments that are framed within each tradition reflect different beliefs about rationality. Both Bloom and MacIntyre can be interpreted in a way that depicts them as complementary members of a school of thought known as 'communitarianism'. This paper takes the view that the version of communitarianism formed by the conjunction of the major premises of Bloom and MacIntyre is based on an epistemological error. It begins with a brief exploration of the genesis of the concept of modern individualism using De Tocqueville as the point of departure. The paper attempts to illustrate the Tocquevillean theme of "freedom as interdependency" of rational individuals. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract: Artificial Neural Net (ANN) is a model that emulates a Biological Neural Net. The ANN field has showed very promising which can be verified by the number of published papers and scientific events. In spite, to reach the desired ANN applications scope, many of ANN current limitations have to be overcome since it is not yet and well established the ANN functioning . There is no good and complete methodologies for construct ANN applications, i.e., for a specific problem to be solved, no methodology indicates what the net topology is, the learning algorithm and the sample of information suitable to the desired performance. If there is no methodology that indicates the better combination of the ANN elements to a specific application, the users have the option to start from a theoretical base and, by using empirical methods, begin constructing personal rules that indicates. the better combination of neural elements. The execution of this technique is difficulty because the number of variables that need to be evaluated during the net development process The focus of this work is facilitate the understanding of the ANN functioning through the user familiarization with its elements. A ANN simulator named Sirena was developed and its graphical interface aim to minimize the understanding difficulties of the low level processes executed by ANNs. During the simulation process one can access to several qualitative and quantitative representations that reflect the net alterations in the learning and inference phases.

Abstract:
This inquiry is a two-tongued performance as research project asking "Why was the voice of the Sirens deadly?" and "How can the Sirens inform contemporary feminist theatre praxis?". The two questions in constant dialectic have been explored in a written dissertation as well as in a one-hour original and ensemble performance called The Quivering: a Matter of Life and Death. Analysing references in mythology, art and history, the written component suggests how the Siren's sonic qualities are manifest in distinct cultural icons and embodied by actual female performers. Four Siren vocalities are identified and theorised: The Monster vocality is evidenced in the figure of the femme fatale; the Lamenter exists in traditional funerary singers and contemporary torch songs; the sound of the Diva is heard in the opera queen; and the Lullaby Maker acoustics oscillate between the banter of Mother Goose and the 'red hot mamas' of the blues. Pursuing what is deadly about each of these embodied voices, the thesis articulates why female sound, like the Siren song of knowledge, is so ambivalently received - its evocation of otherness (Monster), liminality (Lamenter), jouissance (Diva) and contra-diction (Lullaby Maker) is both feared and revered. These four vocalities have grown in and out of The Quivering, a performance odyssey that has interrogated aesthetic, content, characterisation, narrative and devising practice, all with an ear to the Siren's 'deadly' sonority. Subverting portrayals of death as a woman and a taboo, its comic-tragic heroines exist in a liminal landscape as lamenters who confront and facilitate the audience's death passage. In counterpoint to Homeric legacy, it has been designed as an open text, which, combined with its heightened physicality and musicality, make for an 'other' aesthetic or contemporary Siren 'song'. The Quivering is pitched at the same tone as the distilled Siren vocalities or 'blue notes', and, as a performance as research project, also re-sounds provocatively within traditional academic discourse. The 'deadliness' of the female voice, in myth, in theory and in performance thus resides in its dissolution of logos and certainty. It quivers with the pleasure and trauma of a corporeal jouissance that exceeds narrative and linguistic frames with its full-bodied, acoustic and imagistic resonance.

Abstract:
Abstract A siren is a robust fast-valve that generates effective flow pulsations and powerful noise levels under combustor field conditions. Its principle relies on a sonic jet sheared periodically by a cogged wheel rotating at a given speed. Developed for experiments in combustion stability, it offers an alternative to loudspeakers when the use of these is made difficult because of aggressive flow conditions (e.g. elevated conditions of pressure and temperature, presence of impurities in the gas). While the siren was designed for laboratory applications, its technology is a promising candidate for effective flow control on gas turbine fleets. By scanning through a given frequency range, one detects the acoustic resonance of specific parts of the combustor assembly and identifies a zone of combustion instability during a sensitivity analysis where the flame is exposed to calibrated perturbations. Regarding control applications, it can act out of phase for damping purposes in the low-frequency domain (phase control), or transfer the acoustic energy to a higher and less harmful sub-harmonic (modal control). Since a chocked nozzle is involved, the siren’s actuation is decoupled from the flow condition downstream, which is convenient for control. Following-up to previous works where a siren model was introduced with the capacity to vary the amplitude of pulsation independently from the frequency [GT2011-45071], this paper describes into details new features as follows. First, the performance of the apparatus was improved to visit frequencies in the 0–6 kHz range so that the operation is extended to frequencies met by precessing vortex cores in a burner or tangential instabilities in an annular combustor. Next, the discharge configuration is tested and validated as an alternative to the conventional blow-down operation with the siren placed upstream of the pressurised test cell. There, the siren is placed downstream of the test cell, deriving a small part of the pressurised air in the plenum. Finally, a new calibration procedure for fast pressure probes and accelerometers is presented and tested. A multi-modal excitation is introduced where more than one frequency peak is being produced and where the excited frequencies create a kind of a chord. In conclusion the siren is recommended as an effective flow controller, and as a broadband and powerful calibrator.
