Abstract:
ABSTRACT The purpose of this action research study was to investigate the affects of teaching through a situative perspective with story problems on students' understanding of fraction concepts and operations in my fifth-grade mathematics classroom. Students participated in twelve weeks of instruction. Data was collected in the form of pre and post tests, audiotaped and videotaped recordings of instructional sessions, and student work samples. Data analysis revealed that my students constructed their own knowledge about various fraction concepts and operations because students engaged in discussions, after solving story problems, that developed, extended and restructured their knowledge. One example of this occurred after students had solved an equal-sharing problem. Two students came up with different answers and another student explained why both answers were equivalent. Student work samples and post test results indicated that the one student's explanation was understood, adopted and extended by all the students in my class. The data also revealed that students' pictures typically represented the context and action of the story problems. For example, subtraction problems dealing with length were usually represented by number lines or horizontal rectangles with crossed-out markings to show the subtraction operation. Throughout this research study, I discovered that my students were capable of learning from each other and solving problems for which they have no preconceived algorithm. I also learned that analyzing students' work and listening to their discussions in ways that focused on their thinking, not their answers, provided me with information about what my students were grasping and not grasping.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Dealing with the theme of change management requires an examination of a heterogeneous field of approaches and subject perspectives. Systematic empirical investigations of this theme are lacking. In particular, works that take account of more than one school of thought regarding change management are scarce. Furthermore, differences in situational requirements are often insufficiently considered both from a theoretical and empirical point of view. It can be assumed that the failure of change processes is frequently caused by the stereotypical use of generalized recommendations of common approaches. In order to combat these deficits, this work aims to empirically examine contingencies of situational requirements and change management.

The investigation is based on a concept that assumes that an ideal fit (contingency) between situational requirements and change management is necessary for the success of a project and takes into account the accompanying process-related influencing factors. Success is defined in the sense of sustainability as economic, organization and qualification-related types of effects.

In three part studies, consultants and those involved on an operational level were, based on the relevant project, questioned in oral and written form on the operational starting positions, change principles, effects and process-related influencing factors. The first part study comprises four case studies in which a total of 18 persons involved in the project, made up of consultants, operational project leaders and project workers, were questioned. The second part study comprises the written and oral survey of 31 consultants from different schools of thought regarding change management. In the third part study, 47 persons responsible for operational change were questioned in a written survey.

It was possible to divide each of the projects from the second and third part studies into two statistically valid success groups, whereby the success groups did not differ systematically in terms of features of the operational starting positions. The most important results are as follows:

Project success in traditional-bureaucratic organization structures is associated with a long-term, continuous, gradually adaptive, pragmatic, solution-oriented procedure. In flexible structures, on the other hand, success comes with a short-term, far-reaching and integrational, conceptual procedure. In traditional-hierarchical management structures, a minimally human-centered and less self-evaluative process with a standardized procedure proves to be conducive to success, while in flexible management structures, a strongly human-centered and markedly self-evaluative procedure with an adaptive approach shows itself to be beneficial. In terms of great operational knowledge of change, a self-evaluative procedure proves to be most promising, while with little knowledge of change, a less self-evaluative procedure should be favored. In view of economic requirements, a long-term, continuous, quick and cascading procedure with a far-reaching and integrational, conceptual approach and little involvement of evaluation by others yields positive effects. In terms of technological requirements, a long-term, continuous, slow and far-reaching procedure with a low amount of evaluation by others is conducive to success. For socio-cultural requirements, a slow, self-evaluative, gradually adaptive and pragmatically focused procedure proves to be successful. In view of political and legal requirements, a procedure that is planned in a linear fashion, is goal-oriented, includes expert consultancy and a minimal amount of process orientation will bring about success. With complete reorganizations as requirements within an organization, a procedure that is planned in a linear fashion, has expert and process consulting aspects and is far-reaching is conducive to success. In terms of requirements within an organization brought about through management change, a short-term, temporary, integrational, conceptual procedure with an adaptive approach will lead to success. With regard to process-related influencing factors, a situation-specific approach by consultants, supportive management behavior, a high level of acceptance of the consultant, a comprehensive involvement of the employees, their active participation and commitment, anchoring of the project in the organization as well as high perceived use of the ensuing change prove to be the most important supporting factors.

Resistance from staff, problematic management behavior in the change process, a lack of or deficient resources provided in addition to daily business, obstructive organizational (not project-related) developments and anxiety/uncertainty of the staff are the most important inhibitory factors.

Abstract:
The research question was stirred by observations that the set-up of the clinical situation seems to contain elements that have a deep impact on the patient. I found that the clinical situation shows important similarities to the space for play that children negotiate when they want to immerse themselves in mutual phantasy play. Consequently, one overall purpose of the present study is to explore the psychoanalytic situation as a play situation with the help of two clinical vignettes. In the first part, I give a picture of my understanding of Freud’s reasons for shaping his clinical situation as he did. A critical scrutiny of Freud’s case of the Rat Man gave us keys to an understanding of the clinical method’s contradictoriness.A tentative hypothesis was framed that the set-up of psychoanalysis’s clinical situation induces an ambiguity about different levels of reality, the purpose being to create a space in the course of the analysis in which this confusion can be analyzed and comprehended. This work on the ambiguity of the reality links psychoanalysis with the intimate and spontaneous interaction that characterizes children’s social phantasy play. The investigation came to the conclusion that there exists a conspicuous equivalence between the two situations. The issue of what connects the universal play situation of children on the one hand, with the specific psychoanalytic situation on the other, makes a point of departure from which to approach and investigate the field of inquiry. The theory is that a ‘play’ with factual and illusory asymmetry generates a field of tension that serves as a sounding board from the moment of psychoanalysis's introductory negotiations until its ending. A third area is created that supports a mutual explorative space that in its turn makes a bridge between outer and inner reality and between now and the past. In such a context the phenomenon of play becomes a transformational concept. The conclusion is that psychoanalysis organizes a clinical situation that speaks to a profound and universal human need and that it is understood as an analogy of the play situation of children.

The purpose with this study was to examine how persons giving care to their spouses with dementia experience their life situation. As information source we used a qualitative study which included halfstructured interview questions. The study took place in three municipalities in the south of Sweden. Three females and two males took part in the study and everyone had experiences of giving care to their spouces with dementia. We used a coping theory and an exchange theory. The study´s main discovery was that caregiving relatives experience the support from voluntary organizations more important and valuable than support from the municipality. In addition, the study showed that male caregivers had a more positive view of their situation than females.

Abstract:
Situation awareness and collective intelligence are two technologies used in smart systems. The former renders those systems able to reason upon their abstract knowledge of what is going on. The latter enables them learning and deriving new information from a composition of experiences of their users. In this dissertation we present a doctoral research on an attempt to combine the two in order to obtain, in a collaborative fashion, situation-based rules that the whole community of entities would benefit of sharing. We introduce the KRAMER recommendation system, which we designed and implemented as a solution to the problem of not having decision support tools both situation-aware and collaborative. The system is independent from any domain of application in particular, in other words generic, and we apply its prototype implementation to context-enriched social communication scenario

Abstract:
'how can meaning be the source of contextual constraints', and 'how does the speaker purport to get the hearer to fulfill the conditions of satisfaction of his speech act'are the two questions 1 address myself to. The first question is susceptible of two types of answer: in intentional terms, when construed as a question about the logical structure of meaning; in terms of the double notion of endorsement commitment, when taken to bear on the relation between s and h. Chapter one, which deals with this question, also takes up such related issues as'background and representation', communicative intention' and' semantic versus intentional consistency'. The second question 1 answer in chapter two in terms of contextual transformations: in the absence of guaranteed means s could avail herself of to get h to do what is expected from him, all s can do is provide h with the means to understand and evaluate the content of her intention; or rather, to construct the relevant contexts of comprehsion and evaluation. Accordingly, s's utterance will trigger a series of transformations of h's mental context, which transformationsform the necessary prerequisite for those further contextual transformations. Chapter three is concerned with the extent to which those various modifications of the context are anchored in meaning. Its main focus is on those expressions which can be said to carry the relevant instructions intended for the comprehension process

Research on how children conceptualize the principles of physics classically emphasizes intraindividual processes or collective situations. Individual situations and their consequences on the development of concepts are poorly defined. A pre-/post-test study was conducted in a school setting with 106 ten-year-old children. Children had to predict, justify and generally explain the phenomenon of buoyancy exhibited by objects immersed in water. During the training phases, they were free to use objects and instruments to write a general explanation. This task was repeated three times, which enable us to compare four experimental conditions: (1) children who worked individually; (2) children who worked in close collaboration; (3) children who began working individually, then worked in a dyad, and then worked again individually; and (4) children who began working in dyads, then worked individually, and then worked again in dyads. Evolution of cognition differed. When they are trained regularly in dyads, children develop better justifications of their particular predictions. Working in dyads enriches their argumentative repertoire to describe objects’ reactions. The individual-dyadic-individual training was the only experimental condition that led to progressively more accurate predictions. This specific combination may lead to a restructuration of cognitive processes. Each combination of social situation has a different effect on the childrens’ ability to predict, justify and generally explain. During the training, general and specific analyses of the practices of the children helped us to propose a detailed interpretation: these analyses show that children are confronted with different contradictions depending not only on their interactions with peers, but also with heterogeneous objects and tools. Future research is proposed

Abstract:
This rhetorical study analyzes three articles in the Swedish street magazine Situation Sthlm. Each article deals with people who sell the magazine. Situation Sthlm is sold on the streets by homeless, or former homeless, people who live in social exclusion. The theoretical framework of this study is argumentation in narratives, different perspectives on ethos and rhetorical agency. With a narrative method of analysis, this study examines how the sellers’ ethos is established in comparison with their ethos as citizens. The study also examines what kind of agency functions these articles create, and explores which potential participants are invited to be engaged in the issue of how the sellers’ situation can be changed. Another purpose with the essay is to investigate the link between narrative arguments, social ethos and collective agency. The conclusion of the analysis in this study is that the sellers’ social ethos as citizens is in greater focus than their ethos as sellers. Another conclusion is that Situation Sthlm creates a space for action for the sellers in the sense that they can tell their stories. However, the audience that reads the articles is not invited to create any change. Narrative arguments show how social ethos is constructed and creates collective agency for people who have a similar position in society.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study is a study in social work. The comprehensive aim with this study is to understand och describe hearing-impairment´s situation reference to university studies. Four specific questions have been formulated, these are; - How does the accessibility look like? How does the formal meetings look like? How does the informal meetings look like, and what kind of way the hearing-impairment influence?

The study has a qualitative attempt with hermeneutic touch. Interviews have been permormed with six hearing-impairment students, that had explain about their experiences about their own study situation. The interview guide was half-structured, and the selection was strategic.

The result shows that the accessibility on the university is decisive on, which aspect of the accessibility that presents. The students point out that it is possible to lay claim to their teacher or lecture´s time in the formal meetings. In the informal meetings, the students focus is to tell about two specific meetings and three specific aspects. The result from on what kind of way the hearing-impairment influence, shows that it depends from situation to situation if the hearing-impairment influence negative or if it does not influence at all. A constant touch from all the six student is that it is much up to the student itself to succeed or not, reference to the studies. Stubborness, good will, believe in itself, be brave and not give up, is qualities that the students experience that it is good to have as a hearing-impairment student in university studies.

One conclusion is that hearing-impairment students have some influence reference to the meetings with the intepreters, and the meetings with personal from the technical service. On the other hand, the students missing influence to themself, to have power and control, reference to their own study situation, in the meeting with the university as a organization. The students whom have easiest to success in their studies is the students who have the qualities stubborness, good will, believe in themself, be brave and not give up.

An other conclusion is that still, seven years since Antonson (1998) in a study about hearing-impairment in university studies, gave proposal to important measures (see enclosure 1 in this study), it seems to no noticeable change have been done.

Keywords: integration, inclusion, hearing-impairment, studysituation, university and universitystudies, accessibility, informal meetings, formal meetings and the hearing-impairment´s influence.

Language and consciousness enrich our lives. But they are rare commodities; most creatures are language-less and unconscious. This dissertation is about the conditions that distinguish the haves from the have-nots. The semantic properties of a natural language expression are determined by conventions governing the way speakers use the expression to communicate information. The capacity to speak a language involves highly specialized (perhaps even modular) cognition. Some authors think that one cannot consistently accept both views. In Chapter 1 ('Content and Competence') I explain why one can. According to the convention-based theory of content determination, propositions are fit to be the contents of both thought and speech. Recently, this view has been challenged. The challenge exploits a series of observations about what it takes to understand semantically incomplete sentences. In Chapter 2 ('Speaker Meaning in Context'), I explain how the challenge can be met. Physicalists seem to owe an explanatory debt. Why should psychophysical relations appear contingent? In Chapter 3 ('There Couldn't Have Been Zombies, but it's a Lucky Coincidence That There Aren't') I pay the debt on their behalf. My explanation proceeds in three steps. First, I observe that there are necessary coincidences, or accidents. Second, I show that traditional epistemological arguments for dualism merely establish that phenomenal states and corresponding physical states are accidentally, or coincidentally, related. Finally, I suggest that inattention to the distinction between coincidence/accidentality and contingency results in frequent equivocation. Thus the disposition to (correctly) judge that psychophysical relations are coincidences manifests itself as a disposition to (incorrectly) judge that psychophysical relations are contingent. In Chapter 4 ('Zombies are Inconceivable') I deny that psychophysical relations appear contingent. The chapter begins with an argument to the effect that zombies cannot be coherently conceived. I then consider and reject various ways of resisting the argument.

Abstract:
International migrations of non-documented people have grown for twenty years. Law plays central part in birth and development of the phenomenon. Entering an irregular situation involves that a foreigner broke the law, which enforce him to be in possession of admission, stay or work authorizations. During the 20th century, possible irregularities increased. Today, irregulars can't lead an ordinary life, they are always under the threat of being arrested and deported. In most the cases, irregular state doesn't last. Either police will arrest irregular people and deport them out of the national territory, or irregular people escape from exclusion and join the national community, profiting by a regularization or nationalization. A legal status for irregular people is impossible. It is difficult to imagine law organizing what it chooses to exclude and repress. However, international laws evolution could give birth to a minimum juridical protection which would join national legislations

Balaci, Diana. "Nouvelles technologies : sources d’une nouvelle variété discursive ?" Thesis, Paris 10, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA100188.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the modifications that various digital supports can produce throughout several languages (we take into account Romanian and French). In doing that, it is influenced by the support’s technological features and therefor separates our corpus source accordingly: blog, chat, SMS, Facebook. The purpose is therefor finding if this (or those) new way (s) of communication change the traditional rules of exchange (spoken or written). In order to evaluate the differences between the digital discourse and the previous types, one has to compare the collected data to the prior types: dialogue and conversation. Statistical frequency analysis will complete our perspective as for this new discourse genre’s stability. This will allow shaping its general lines as well as its inner variation. The next step is a comparative study of various intercultural situations (the cultural context that can modify the speaking frame). We turn therefor towards a description of the interactive behavior within the two cultures. We shall take into account the interaction’s prototypical course in a given situation as well as its specificity according to the situation/ frame/ specific speaker
Pasul urmator este trasarea studiului comparativ a situatiilor culturale (contextul cultural inerent putand sa modifice in mod sensibi lcadrul conversational). Ne vom apleca astfel asupra unei descrieri a comportementelor interactive in interiorul celor doua culturi pentru a obtine o comparatie exhaustiva. Astfel derularea prototipica a interactiunii intr-o situatie data cat si declinarile sale specifice in functie de situatie/ cadru/ locutor specific, sunt elemente cheie in cadrul studiului nostru

Abstract:
Information security has always been a topic of concern in the world as an emphasis on new techniques to secure the identity of a legitimate user is regarded as top priority. To counter such an issue, we have a traditional way of authentication factors “what you have” and “what you know” in the form of smart cards or passwords respectively. But biometrics is based on the factor “who are you” by analyzing human physical or behavioral characteristics. Biometrics has always been an efficient way of authorization and is now considered as a $1500 million industry where fingerprints dominate the biometrics while iris is quickly emerging as the most desirable form of biometric technique. The main goal of this thesis is to compare and evaluate different biometrics techniques in terms of their purpose, recognition mechanism, market value and their application areas. Since there are no defined evaluating criteria, my method of evaluation was based on a literature survey from internet, books, IEEE papers and technical surveys. Chapter 3 is focused on different biometrics techniques where I discuss them briefly but in chapter 4, I go deeper into Iris, fingerprints, facial techniques which are prominent in biometrics world. Lastly, I had a general assessment of the biometrics, their future growth and suggested specific techniques for different environment like access controls, e-commerce, national ids, and surveillance.

Abstract:
The six experiments reported in this thesis tested Endsley's (1995) three level theory of perception, comprehension and projection in SA alongside relevant cognitive theories, using a driving hazard perception test (HPT) of both hazard recognition and hazard anticipation as the main dependent measures. Experiments 1 and 2 tested the effects of training and expertise on the HPT, revealing a positive association between hazard anticipation and both SA training and expertise. Experiment 2 revealed a potentially complex relationship between expertise and recognition and anticipation. The effects of training Endsley's (1995) perception and comprehension levels of SA did not appear to be additive as predicted by that theory. Experiments 3 and 4 tested the effects of concurrent freeze probes and real time SA probes on the HPT. This revealed a negative effect of interruption and a positive effect of reorientation (revealing the rationale of the task) associated with the use of a freeze probe, in terms of hazard anticipation. Furthermore, these two effects appear to be mutually cancelling. It was also found that notification of forthcoming online probes does not ameliorate the negative effects of those interruptions in terms of hazard anticipation. Experiments 5 and 6 tested the effects of working memory interference in terms of visual-spatial, phonological and episodic buffer processing on the two HPT measures. This revealed more deleterious effects on hazard recognition associated with visual-spatial and episodic buffer interference than with phonological interference. It is argued that in terms of SA related visual processing during driving Milner and Goodale's (1992) dual pathway theory appears to have more explanatory power than Endsley's (1995) theory of SA.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Situation recognition is a process with the goal of identifying a priori defined situations in a flow of data and information. The purpose is to aid decision makers with focusing on relevant information by filtering out situations of interest. This is an increasingly important and non trivial problem to solve since the amount of information in various decision making situations constantly grow. Situation recognition thus addresses the information gap, i.e. the problem of finding the correct information at the correct time. Interesting situations may also evolve over time and they may consist of multiple participating objects and their actions. This makes the problem even more complex to solve. This thesis explores situation recognition and provides a conceptualization and a definition of the problem, which allow for situations of partial temporal definition to be described. The thesis then focuses on investigating how Petri nets can be used for recognising situations. Existing Petri net based approaches for recognition have some limitations when it comes to fulfilling requirements that can be put on solutions to the situation recognition problem. An extended Petri net based technique that addresses these limitations is therefore introduced. It is shown that this technique can be as efficient as a rule based techniques using the Rete algorithm with extensions for explicitly representing temporal constraints. Such techniques are known to be efficient; hence, the Petri net based technique is efficient too. The thesis also looks at the problem of learning Petri net situation templates using genetic algorithms. Results points towards complex dynamic genome representations as being more suited for learning complex concepts, since these allow for promising solutions to be found more quickly compared with classical bit string based representations. In conclusion, the extended Petri net based technique is argued to offer a viable approach for situation recognition since it: (1) can achieve good recognition performance, (2) is efficient with respect to time, (3) allows for manually constructed situation templates to be improved and (4) can be used with real world data to find real world situations.
