Abstract:
The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by the Grand Duke Peter Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. Firenze University Press opens the series dealing with the six sections of the Museum with this book on La Specola, situated in Palazzo Torrigiani, which represented the original nucleus. The articles in the first section reconstruct the historic background, the foundation of La Specola and the genesis and development of the collections. The second part considers the anatomical waxes, the entomological collections, and those of the vertebrates and the invertebrates, with a view to providing a description of the precious specimens that is at once precise and accessible. Finally, the third section completes the picture, retracing the important research activity that has accompanied the history of La Specola and reporting on the scientific projects in which the personnel are engaged. The largest collection in the world of anatomical wax models and the vast zoological collection are illustrated by the people directly involved in the related research, and by a superb selection of original photos produced specially for this publication.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the status of India’s social science research (SSR) publications in global context. The outputs chosen to assess India’s comparative performance is the articles written and published by Indians in the field of social sciences either individually or in collaboration with researchers outside India. The study analysed journal articles published during 2008–14 drawn from Scopus database to examine the publication status of India in social sciences in an international context. The study found that the six-year period, 2009–14, India consistently ranks among the top 15 countries in the world. Discipline-wise analysis shows that the share of pure social science articles was significant but is declining. Of the total 30938 articles, 28 per cent are published with international collaboration. The USA and the UK contribute 52 per cent of total international collaborations.

Azzara, Christopher D., and Alden H. Snell, II. Assessment of Improvisation in Music. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935321.013.103.

Full text
Abstract:
This article provides an overview of research on assessment of improvisation in music and offers suggestions for increasing its centrality in music teaching and learning. With listening, improvising, reading, and composing as context for music teaching and learning, it covers historical and philosophical foundations for, and research on, creativity and improvisation. The article’s synthesis of the literature focuses on assessment of ability to interact, group, compare, and anticipate and predict music while improvising. Six elements (repertoire, vocabulary, intuition, reason, reflection, and exemplars) contribute to a holistic and comprehensive creative process that inspires spontaneous and meaningful music making. The article concludes with recommendations for replication and extension of research to provide insight for improvisation assessment.

Shapiro, Stewart, ed. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195325928.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Math and Logic is a reference about the philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of logic. Mathematics and logic have been central topics of concern since the dawn of philosophy. Since logic is the study of correct reasoning, it is a fundamental branch of epistemology and a priority in any philosophical system. Philosophers have focused on mathematics as a case study for general philosophical issues and for its role in overall knowledge-gathering. Today, philosophy of mathematics and logic remain central disciplines in contemporary philosophy, as evidenced by the regular appearance of articles on these topics in the best mainstream philosophical journals; in fact, the last decade has seen an explosion of scholarly work in these areas. This volume covers these disciplines, giving the reader an overview of the major problems, positions, and battle lines. The twenty-six articles are by established experts in the field, and these articles contain both exposition and criticism as well as substantial development of their own positions.

Full text
Abstract:
In Toward Perpetual Peace among States (1795), Kant outlined a blueprint for achieving peace and Right on the basis of six preliminary and three definitive articles, which are stated in the form of a treaty or constitution. In Europe, the definitive articles map onto a massive transformation of institutions that combined to enable the CLO to emerge. Political scientists have focused on Kant’s explanation of the absence of war among liberal states. Yet Kant himself prioritized a broader goal: the achievement of a Rightful condition among states and persons. In his essay, Kant argued forcefully to his conclusion that all state officials bear a moral duty to work to achieve a Rightful condition, while telling us little about how to proceed in practice. In subsequent chapters, the authors develop a Kantian-congruent account of a modern system of constitutional justice at both the domestic and transnational levels.

Williams, Donald C. The Elements and Patterns of Being. Edited by A. R. J. Fisher. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198810384.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book collects six influential articles and six previously unpublished essays in metaphysics by Donald C. Williams. The first chapter is a defense of metaphysics. The second chapter is the classic statement of the ontology of abstract particulars or tropes. The third and fourth chapters expound a realist theory of universals based on trope ontology. The fifth is a systematic presentation of actualism—the view that the world is a four-dimensional manifold of actual ‘qualitied contents’. The sixth is an articulation of an objectivist account of necessity and possibility, given actualism and trope ontology. The seventh dispenses with existence because existence is merely the sum of actual existents, as per actualism. Chapters 8–12 expound the four-dimensionalist metaphysics of time in connection with the problems of determinism, fatalism, future contingents, the passage of time, time’s arrow, and time travel. These essays, as ordered by the editor, convey for the first time the systematic vision of Williams’s metaphysics. This book comes with an informative Introduction to the major aspects of Williams’s metaphysics in its historical context.

Stuart, Casey-Maslen, Clapham Andrew, Giacca Gilles, and Parker Sarah. Art.20 Amendments. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198723523.003.0024.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores Article 20 of the ATT, which sets out the procedure by which states parties may amend the treaty. The possibility of amendment is often included in a multilateral treaty. According to paragraph 1 of Article 20, six years after the entry into force of the treaty, any state party may propose an amendment to this treaty. This will first be possible on 24 December 2020. A reason for waiting six years before amendments can be considered is presumably to allow time for states parties to implement the treaty and consider any lessons learned before trying to amend it. As a result of this provision, this is a treaty that can adapt to changing circumstances and realities. A proposed amendment must be submitted in writing to the treaty Secretariat established in accordance with Article 18.
