Abstract:
In the historiography of the 1967 War, the common reading is to portray it as an "inadvertent war." Using recently declassified documents, this article offers an alternative interpretation. In critically examining existing master plan theories, it is shown that the United Arab Republic's (UAR) military actions were limited in size and were without aggressive intentions. The Israeli decision to strike was taken not for military reasons but rather to prevent a diplomatic solution which might have entailed disadvantages for the Israeli side.

Abstract:
In recent times, the issues surrounding the "67 borders" have become part of the public debate. In recent speeches, President Obama has suggested that Israel should return to pre-1967 borders with "land-swaps" in exchange for some form of peace with the Palestinians living within current Israeli territory. The validity of Obama's suggestion has been questioned by both members of the political left and right and in the opinion of this author, with considerable merit. However, the ultimate judgment on the validity of Obama's suggestion should be based on a study encompassing the decisions, both correct and flawed, of the leaders during the 1967 war. For this, a study of collective misperceptions, decision making, and the eventual consequences such decisions brought is necessary. That is the purpose of this thesis. For a proper analysis of the misperceptions and decision making surrounding the 1967 war, its proper to review the source material. In that light, there is no shortage of material written about the 1967 war; American, Israel, and Arab authors have all contributed to the historical records. However, much of the material is focused on a historical perspective and not on the decision-making process. There are not many exceptions. Therefore, it becomes important to compare the newer analyzed material against the primary source material and discuss the discrepancies. At the end, it will be determined whether the collective governmental decisions based upon misperceptions accelerated, decelerated, or had a neutral effect on the outbreak of the war. Comparing the source material and viewing it through the filter of newly released information will constitute the methodology whenever possible. The results of this study have revealed a mixed bag of results depending on the nation in question. This was to be expected because individual nations are subject to different misperceptions.; Nations falling under the spell of different misperceptions experience different consequences and outcomes than those who do not. Additionally, even if two separate nations are exposed to the same stimulus, their response may be completely different. In terms of the 1967 war, it can be stated that Israeli misperceptions staved off the start of the 1967 War, whereas Soviet and Arab misperceptions served to accelerate it. By contrast American misperceptions seemed to have little if any affect whatsoever. The purpose of thesis is to expose and documents misperceptions and the resulting consequences that arose from them. It is not designed to make judgments about the current political situation. However, it is the sincere hope of this author that when a situation runs parallel to the events of the 1967, some of the same mistakes can be avoided. Exactly what runs parallel, and what is significant in today's world, is left to the reader's own judgment.

Hakim, Jamie. "Affect and cultural change : the rise of popular Zionism in the British Jewish community after the Six Day War (1967)." Thesis, University of East London, 2012. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3897/.

Full text
Abstract:
In current Jewish Studies scholarship there is a broad consensus that the Arab-Israeli war of June 1967 caused both an intense emotional response in Britain’s Jewish community and a change in the relationship this community had with the State of Israel. What this scholarship has yet to provide is either a detailed account of the ways that the June 1967 war impacted on this community or a sustained theorisation of how the intensity generated by a world-historical event might bring about change. This thesis attempts to address these gaps by interviewing twelve British Jews who lived through their community’s response to the war and supplement this data with original archival research, adding detail that is currently missing from the historical record. It then interprets this data using a cultural studies approach grounded, primarily, in the thought of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. In using this approach this thesis reveals that it was the intense affectivity generated by the Zionist representation of the war as the ‘Six Day War’ that caused the community to change in the post-1967 conjuncture. It then identifies these changes as cultural ¬– occurring on the planes of identity, representation, everyday life, cultural practice and, most crucially, affectivity. In revealing the centrality of affect in the impact of the war on the British Jewish community, this thesis argues that the hegemonic form of Zionism that emerges within that community after 1967 is ‘Popular Zionism’, defined as an intensely charged affective disposition towards the State of Israel that is lived out in the cultural identities, everyday lives and cultural practices of British Jews.

Brännlund, Alexander. "Israel's Best Offense is a Good Defense : Assessing defensive realism as applied to the Six-Day-War and the Israeli-Arab peace treaties." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för statsvetenskap (ST), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-100438.

Full text
Abstract:
In the form of a theory testing case study based upon the seminal works of Kenneth Waltz and Stephen Walt, this thesis seeks to uncover whether defensive realism can be applied with focus on Israeli international conduct. This is defined by their wartime actions as well as their peacekeeping efforts. The paper analyses two major historical events; namely the six-day-war and the recent Israeli-Arab peace treaties. Thereafter it delves into the preexisting conditions of each combattant in the war, then reviews the events unfolding during the conflict in the first part of the analysis, followed by the second part examining the contents of the Abraham Accords, as well as the official statements of Bahrain and Sudan regarding peace with Israel.  Following this, the thesis examines the details and terms of the Abraham Accords and treaties between Israel, Bahrain and Sudan. A hypothesis is presented predicting that both tenets of defensive realism will be applicable to their respective parts of Israeli history. It is subsequently found that the first tenet of defensive realism has explanatory value with regards to the six-day-war, the second tenet of defensive realism that follows also proves to hold significant merit, and the thesis concludes that the given hypothesis therefore is correct. Both tenets of defensive realism are applicable to respective units of analysis on Israel, which therefore suggests that the theory of defensive realism offers a good framework for explaining the actions of the Israeli state.

Abstract:
John A. Warden’s theory the enemy as a system has been influential and attributed to large scale victories, such as Operation Desert Storm. It advocates offensive use of air power by parallel attacks on the enemy’s strategic center. While doctrines of small states are dependent and influenced by the military thinking of great power nations, its capacity and necessary priorities for the use of air power may differ. This study examines Warden’s theory through two cases, the Six Day War and the Second Lebanon War. Both relied on air power executed by a small state, Israel. The result show that Warden’s theory can partly explain Israelic victory during the Six Day War, but with substantial differentiations from the theory’s advocation of attacks on the enemy strategic leadership. The findings are ambiguous and neither strengthens nor weakens the theory. The analysis of the Second Lebanon War indicates that air power was insufficient in achieving strategic victory in the war against Hezbollah, even though the execution of the air operation had significant resemblance to Warden’s theory, thus weakening the theory.

Abstract:
The research regarding the six day war and the aerial operations named Operation Moked is extensive but there are certain shortcomings in the research that examines both the operation and the principle of surprise. The aim of this paper is to contribute to this research by utilising existing military theories on the principle of surprise in order to identify indicators that are representative of surprise.  These indicators are thereafter used in a study of Operation Moked in order to examine the extent of in which the principle was utilised. The result of this research goes to show that the principle of surprise was utilised in great extent by Israel during Operation Moked.

Abstract:

I bägge krigen rådde god teknisk analys vilket påverkade deras taktik.

The Yom Kippur War in 1973 is known to be the first naval war when surface-to-surface missiles were used by both sides. How did this development of technology affect the tactical actions of Israel?

This paper examines how the development of technology, in form of the surface-to-surface missile, has affected the naval warfare of Israel and if technology affects tactics or vice versa. To find answers, the Israelis tactical actions are compared, in two wars, Six-Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur war in 1973. Theories regarding the interplay between technology and tactics, by Kevin P. Hughes and Christopher Werner, are used as tool for the analysis.

The result of the study shows that the tactical actions of Israel did change by the development of technology. Common in both wars is the fact that analyses of technology were carried out and affected their tactical actions. Technology during the Yom Kippur War though made more offensive tactics possible, than during the Six-Day War.

Thus development of the surface-to-surface missile did lead to an effective adaptation of tactics. The result of the study also shows that tactics and technology constantly affects each other.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the British policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict through the prism of British interests in the Middle East from the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948-1949 to the Six-Day War in 1967. In addition to economic and political interests, we show that in the years under review the British policy has also been marked by a change in the world balance of power, namely the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as the world's leading superpowers, Arab nationalism ... etc. In this context, we emphasize that the creation of the State of Israel met the strategic needs of Western powers in the Middle East. This approach will prove its effectiveness only eight years after the creation of Israel when the latter played a decisive role during the tripartite invasion of Egypt in late 1956. Moreover, we point out the place occupied by oil industry and commercial interests in the process of British decolonization in the Middle East in the 1950s and 1960s. The study of British foreign policy in the Middle East has been neglected because of the “demise of Britain's political supremacy” worldwide. Nevertheless, we show that Britain has played a role as important as that of the United States in safeguarding their common interests in the Middle East through a close collaboration

Abstract:
The principle of surprise is one of the oldest principles that is to used in battle. Principle as the basis of the conflict and the methods you can use to succeed in battle. But what does surprise really mean, and how is it used? The essay will problematize the principle of surprise and connect the research on surprise to Pearl Harbor and the Six Day War that has been seen to be typical surprise attacks. Did the attacks look the same and do the indicators from the literature show that it was a surprise?Initially the principle surprise will describe the selected literature to illustrate the meaning. The literature will be analyzed and make a basis for the later part of the essay. Then I will analyze the literature and apply it on the two surprise attacks, if they were using the same indicators. Finally it discusses the results and the author suggests new research related to the topic. The purpose of this paper is to problematize the principle of surprise and the indicators that affect the principle of surprise. The essay will conduct a comparative method between Pearl Harbor and the Six Day War. This analysis is performed by a qualitative text analysis and essay analytical framework is the principle of surprise. The theoretical basis of this paper is the analysis based on the theory and literature surprise of Pearl Harbor and the Six-Day War.

This electronic nose uses a series of sensors consisting of 6 (six) pieces and uses a Conducting Polymer. This polymer has a high resistance so it is widely used as an insulator. However, this resistance has a certain limit where the polymer surface will turn into carbon and conduct electric current if exposed to excessive electric charge. This research was conducted by taking samples of beef and lamb as test samples where these meats were placed in a closed container at room temperature. Data is taken alternately every day to find out the odor of each meat where on the first day data is taken from the odor of beef and on the second day data is taken from the odor of lamb. A two-layer neural network consisting of six input nodes and three output neurons is trained using the Kohonen algorithm with the training process completed in 31 iterations. The test was carried out 20 times for each exposure to steam from the odor of beef and lamb which was carried out alternately. The percentage of success of the system is reaching 90%.

Abstract Since incident solar radiation and cooling demand are in phase for most of the day at Caribbean sites, and between 4 and 7 kWh/m2 of solar energy is available virtually every day, solar cooling makes sense. A solar ice maker with a capacity of 50 lbs (22.7 kg) of ice per day was operated at CERMES, UWI, Barbados, for six months using 1.1kWp of BP Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. This was a pilot study for a full scale, one-tonne-per-day solar ice maker at the fishing village of Skeete’s Bay on the southeast coast of Barbados at a new fishing complex. The Skeete’s Bay solar PV ice maker system uses 148 BP Solar 275F solar PV modules with a maximum output of 4.75A and 17.0V. These are wired in series-parallel to form an array with a nominal output of 11,100W (48V at 231A). This power is directed into a battery bank of twenty four12V, 200Ah (100hour rate) lead acid batteries. Two Trace SW4048 inverters power two Scotsman model 1200AE-32A flake ice machines, each producing 1170 lbs (531kg) per day and feeding into a common storage bin of 4.1m3.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives/Scope: In the oil and gas industry, there are different ways to support and maintain oil production by preserving the pressure in the oil reservoirs. Water injection is acknowledged as one of the most effective methods to keep the reservoir’s pressure and hence maximize the oil recovery. In X field, located in the South of Oman, oil recovery utilizing water injection started in 2005. Three water supply wells provide the water for injection. Since 2018 the uptime of these wells has been around +- 69% which is far from the target uptime of 95%. This affects the water injectivity to the reservoir and hence oil production. On average, around 370 bbl/d of oil production is deferred, with potential revenue of 6 million US$ lost annually. Methods, Procedures, Process: To overcome the problem of low uptime of water supply, Lean Six Sigma was applied, using the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) method. The DMAIC approach has successfully proven process improvements in different industries but has yet to be used in the oil and gas industry. The DMAIC method was applied to identify the main contributors to wells failures, and hence remove process defects and reduce the downtime of the water supply wells. Six Sigma is generally known as a data-driven methodology for improving quality and reducing variation in business activities using multiple statistical tools. Results, Observations, Conclusions: The study was performed on various possible factors that can cause downtime to the water supply wells. Statistical analysis confirmed three leading causes: well surface leaks, overhead line failures and backpressure. Three dedicated teams were formed to develop and implement improvement plans. This improved uptime of the water supply wells from 69% to more than 98%, which translates to an increase of 1100m3/day (6900 bbl./day) of water injection. As a result, production increased by 1150 bbl./day of oil. The overall benefit for the 14 days pilot and sustain interval of this project was 640,000 USD (assuming 40 USD per barrel). The changes being sustained give an expected annual gain of 4.7 million USD per well. This approach will be replicated in another three fields with the same issue. Novel/Additive Information: Applying the Lean Six Sigma methodology has effectively improved the uptime of water supply wells and hence water injectivity and oil production. This study proved that Lean Six Sigma could be used to help unlock many oil production opportunities.

Abstract:
This study is an attempt to shed light on a central and important issue in the lives of any nation or society or group of people, and it is the issue of "faith". One of the most important foundations in the Jewish faith is the "Sabbath" or day of rest for the Jews, which they respect and sanctify from all the other six days of the week. This study discusses the different representations of Saturday in Hebrew poetry. This study examined different representations of the theme of Saturday in Hebrew poetry with special emphasis on the significance of these representations shaped their worldview of the Jews on the topic flowing. Saturday is a day of rest and weekly holy people of Israel, the first deadline dates prescribed in the Torah. When there was a regular basis every seven days, on the seventh day a week. Saturday is the start of Friday's end, a little before sunset - the time called "Saturday Night", and tip the next day, with nightfall - long known as "Saturday". Jewish Saturday is considered the most sacred date. Saturday observance is one of the central commandments in Judaism; According to Judaism, this is the first commandment given to man, on the day he removed and weighed against all the commandments of the Torah. Judaism Saturday symbolizes the creation of the world by God and the holiness constant since the world was created by God. Reasons for the mitzvot and customs specific biblical command to sit origin consecrate this day and strike him from work, God's act of creation after the completion of the six days of creation. Saturday is used only for rest and refraining from doing work, and has been caught during today's Bible Holiness, pleasure, study Torah and elation. Observance of the Saturday, according to Judaism, is a practical admission creation of the world, reinforces the belief and non-observance leads to weakening of the Jewish faith, as well as keeping the Saturday brings a person to the Creator and secrete more physical nuns. Israel was set Saturday to officially rest. Sanctity of "on Saturday" is based - according to tradition - the thinking that thought that the God who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and Ahri-cc, he rested on the seventh day his work which he worked it, and he ordered them to stop all this day according craft books mentioned several books of the Bible. At the beginning of this study will be discussed at the origin of the word "Sabbath" (Saturday) in the Hebrew language, and the meaning of the word "Sabbath" in the Bible, Then, will be discussed on the types Saturday among the Jews, except they have a regular Sabbath day three ten types of Saturdays, expressing the various events and occasions and have various rituals and special customs. Too, will be discussed on the customs and rituals that the Jews do them during the entry to his departure on Saturday. Even so, it is during this study for some changes in different terms to Saturday, which the Jews call them the Sabbath. These names were used most by the Hebrew writers in modern times in their songs and stories that written in honor of this day, and Hebrew poets wrote poetry on Saturday: Bialik wrote the song "Saturday queen", poet Amir Gilboa wrote the song "Cch Cmo Sani the up" and others. By analysis of these literary works can be seen that the authors of these works depict through which all customs and ceremonies on Saturday in detail from beginning to end, especially the poet Bialik's poem "Saturday queen". And the end of the study conclusions and sources will come

Abstract:
The inactivation of factors VIII:C, V:C and fast acting TPA inhibitor by activated Protein C indicates that oral anticoagulation is more than simple reduction of prothrombin complex activity. To investigate these changes, six patients were studied after stopping oral anticoagulant treatment. Protein C activity and C antigen, Factors VIII:C, VIII:vWFAg, V:C, V:Ag, X:C, VII:C, fibrinogen and TPA activity were measured during long-term nicoumalone therapy (duration of therapy 8-96 months, mean 28 months), and after discontinuation on days 2, 4, 8, 10, 15, 30 and 42.The INR on the last day of therapy ranged between 2.0 - 3.3, (mean 2.6). Protein C activity and antigen and factor X became normal by day 8; factor II by day 10. Factor VII activity peaked on day 8, falling to resting levels by day 30. Factor VIII parameters remained high throughout, whereas Factor V antigen showed no significant change. Factor V activity was not quantifiable untill day 8 because of non-parallelism (? PIVKA effect), but was higher on day 8 than day 42 (p < 0.002 paired “t” test) . The higher levels of factor V activity could be protein C dependent, but the high factor VIII appears unrelated. Fibrinogen levels were higher on coumarin treatment (p < 0.05 paired “t” test) and took 30 days to fall to resting level. The effect of Protein C on TPA inhibitor would be expected to increase the activity of TPA, but this activity remained unchanged. Raised fibrinogen levels did not, therefore, appear to be mediated by the effect of protein C on fibrinolysis. Fibrinogen levels in plasma influence ADP induced platelet aggregation which is known to be increased in patients receiving coumarin drugs. In conclusion, patients on coumarin treatment, in addition to showing a reduction in protein C activity, also have higher fibrinogen levels and increased platelet aggregability all of which may be undesirable.

Abstract:
R/V Alkor Cruise AL543 was planned as a six-day cruise with a program of water column and sediment sampling in Kiel Bight and the western Baltic Sea. Due to restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the original plan had to be changed and the cruise was realized as six oneday cruises with sampling in Kiel Bight exclusively. The first day was dedicated to water column and sediment sampling for radionuclide analyses at Boknis Eck and Mittelgrund in Eckernförde Bay. On the remaining five days, water column, bottom water, sediment and pore water samples were collected at eleven stations covering different types of seafloor environment (grain size, redox conditions) in western Kiel Bight. The data and samples obtained on cruise AL543 will be used to investigate (i) the sedimentary cycling of bio-essential metals (e.g., nickel, zinc, and their isotopes) as a function of variable redox conditions, (ii) the impact of submarine groundwater discharge and diffusive benthic fluxes on the distribution of radium and radon as well as greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide) in the water column, and (iii) to characterize and quantify the impact of coastal erosion on sedimentary iron, phosphorus and rare earth element cycling in Kiel Bight.

Abstract:
This study arose from the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO) Resource Stewardship Strategy (RSS), which identified the need for baseline acoustic surveys in the park. Short-term natural soundscape RSS goals were to identify the condition of the acoustic resource, and the high priority stewardship activity associated with this goal was to collect baseline acoustic data. Therefore, from June?September 2017, the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD) gathered acoustical data at six sites in CRMO to provide park managers with information about the acoustical environment, sources of noise, and the natural and existing ambient sound levels within the park. On average, noise was present from 7 to 85 percent of the time across the six sites. The most common sources of noise were vehicles, aircraft, and people. The maximum percent time audible for any detailed noise source was people at site CRMO004, audible for 81% of a 24-hr period. Aircraft was most audible at site CRMO005 (15%), and vehicles were most audible at site CRMO001 (20%). Overall, existing median ambient sound levels (LA50) at sites within CRMO ranged from 17.8?31.1 dB during the day and 15.6?34.0 dB at night during the sampling period. Natural ambient sound levels (LAnat) at sites within CRMO ranged from 16.4?30.0 dB during the day and 15.1?33.0 dB at night. The median impact, defined as the difference in dB between the LA50 and LAnat, was 1.4 dB. Noise impacts ranged from 1.1 dB at CRMO006 to 8.3 dB at CRMO004, where noise was audible for 100% of the time from 07:00 to 10:00.

Brown, Yolanda, Twonia Goyer, and Maragaret Harvey. Heart Failure 30-Day Readmission Frequency, Rates, and HF Classification. University of Tennessee Health Science Center, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21007/con.dnp.2020.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
30 Day Hospital Readmission Rates, Frequencies, and Heart Failure Classification for Patients with Heart Failure Background Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability worldwide among patients. Both the incidence and the prevalence of heart failure are age dependent and are relatively common in individuals 40 years of age and older. CHF is one of the leading causes of inpatient hospitalization readmission in the United States, with readmission rates remaining above the 20% goal within 30 days. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services imposes a 3% reimbursement penalty for excessive readmissions including those who are readmitted within 30 days from prior hospitalization for heart failure. Hospitals risk losing millions of dollars due to poor performance. A reduction in CHF readmission rates not only improves healthcare system expenditures, but also patients’ mortality, morbidity, and quality of life. Purpose The purpose of this DNP project is to determine the 30-day hospital readmission rates, frequencies, and heart failure classification for patients with heart failure. Specific aims include comparing computed annual re-admission rates with national average, determine the number of multiple 30-day re-admissions, provide descriptive data for demographic variables, and correlate age and heart failure classification with the number of multiple re-admissions. Methods A retrospective chart review was used to collect hospital admission and study data. The setting occurred in an urban hospital in Memphis, TN. The study was reviewed by the UTHSC Internal Review Board and deemed exempt. The electronic medical records were queried from July 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019 for heart failure ICD-10 codes beginning with the prefix 150 and a report was generated. Data was cleaned such that each patient admitted had only one heart failure ICD-10 code. The total number of heart failure admissions was computed and compared to national average. Using age ranges 40-80, the number of patients re-admitted withing 30 days was computed and descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using Microsoft Excel and R. Results A total of 3524 patients were admitted for heart failure within the six-month time frame. Of those, 297 were re-admitted within 30 days for heart failure exacerbation (8.39%). An annual estimate was computed (16.86%), well below the national average (21%). Of those re-admitted within 30 days, 50 were re-admitted on multiple occasions sequentially, ranging from 2-8 re-admissions. The median age was 60 and 60% male. Due to the skewed distribution (most re-admitted twice), nonparametric statistics were used for correlation. While graphic display of charts suggested a trend for most multiple re-admissions due to diastolic dysfunction and least number due to systolic heart failure, there was no statistically significant correlation between age and number or multiple re-admissions (Spearman rank, p = 0.6208) or number of multiple re-admissions and heart failure classification (Kruskal Wallis, p =0.2553).

Abstract:
The Andrews Forest Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site has a long-term partnership with the University of Oregon Environmental Leadership Program (ELP), providing service-learning opportunities for undergraduate students to facilitate field trips for middle school students to the Andrews LTER site. Undergraduate students develop field trip lessons based on Andrews Forest research and creative inquiry with support of Schoolyard LTER coordinator and Andrews LTER scientist Schulze. In Middle school students hiking in the Andrews LTER 2023, six classes and 156 students total engaged in day-long field trips at the Andrews LTER site that involved forest ecology and tree identification, time to reflect on and connect with the iconic old-growth ecosystems, and discussions about environmental stewardship ideas that the students could implement both at the Andrews LTER site and in their homes. The students came from three different schools, two of them rural schools with low socio-economic status in the Lane County Educational Service District and the other a Montessori school in the Eugene area. This report shares the results from an evaluation project led by Dr. Matt Nyman and Dr. Kari O’Connell that assessed the impact of the field trips on the middle school students. The evaluation was designed to also support the middle school students’ own reflection and learning at the same time as gathering data about the impact of the experience.

Ruschau and Tossey. L52209 Application of Repair Coatings to Wet Surfaces. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), June 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010377.

Full text
Abstract:
The field application of pipeline repair and rehabilitation coatings can be greatly dependent upon the ambient conditions on the day of the scheduled repair. In some cases, such as the application of FBE at girth welds, temporary shelters can be built over the girth weld area to protect pipe from the elements. However, for the majority of pipeline applications, coatings must be applied to a pipe surface that is not optimized for coating application. Specifically, pipelines which are in service during the repair coating operation will be at the temperature of the product flowing through them regardless of the ambient temperature. This poses a very large problem when the temperature of the pipeline is below the dew point of the ambient air, because condensation will occur continuously on the pipe surface. The objective of this work was to determine the performance implications of applying pipeline repair coatings to wet or damp surfaces. Six liquid repair coatings were applied to steel substrates with varying degrees of surface wetness. Three coatings were standard epoxies; three were specially formulated for wet surface tolerance. The coatings were tested for cathodic disbondment resistance, mechanical strength, and how each coating interacts with water during curing. FTIR and DSC analysis of each coating when mixed and cured in wet conditions (water added to the mix) showed no evidence of water interacting with the coating and changing the chemical structure or the chemical properties. Thus it was concluded that the wet surface tolerant coatings, while manufacturers may claim that they were formulated to absorb and accommodate water, in reality just have a better ability to displace water than standard repair coatings.

Abstract:
The “Novel streaming potential (SP) and thermal sensor techniques for monitoring water and nutrient fluxes in the vadose zone” project ended Oct. 30, 2015, after an extension to complete travel and intellectual exchange of ideas and sensors. A significant component of this project was the development and testing of the Penta-needle Heat Pulse Probe (PHPP) in addition to testing of the streaming potential concept, both aimed at soil water flux determination. The PHPP was successfully completed and shown to provide soil water flux estimates down to 1 cm day⁻¹ with altered heat input and timing as well as use of larger heater needles. The PHPP was developed by Scott B. Jones at Utah State University with a plan to share sensors with Shmulik P. Friedman, the ARO collaborator. Delays in completion of the PHPP resulted in limited testing at USU and a late delivery of sensors (Sept. 2015) to Dr. Friedman. Two key aspects of the subsurface water flux sensor development that delayed the availability of the PHPP sensors were the addition of integrated electrical conductivity measurements (available in February 2015) and resolution of bugs in the microcontroller firmware (problems resolved in April 2015). Furthermore, testing of the streaming potential method with a wide variety of non-polarizable electrodes at both institutions was not successful as a practical measurement tool for water flux due to numerous sources of interference and the M.S. student in Israel terminated his program prematurely for personal reasons. In spite of these challenges, the project funded several undergraduate students building sensors and several master’s students and postdocs participating in theory and sensor development and testing. Four peer-reviewed journal articles have been published or submitted to date and six oral/poster presentations were also delivered by various authors associated with this project. We intend to continue testing the "new generation" PHPP probes at both USU and at the ARO resulting in several additional publications coming from this follow-on research. Furthermore, Jones is presently awaiting word on an internal grant application for commercialization of the PHPP at USU.
