This essay explores the phenomenon of common sense through a contextual analysis of Hannah Arendt’s political application of Kant’s Critique of Judgment. I begin by tracing the development of Arendt’s thinking on judgment and common sense during the 1950s which led her to turn to the third Critique. I then consider the justification of her move by examining the philosophical context and political applications of the third Critique, arguing that within it Kant made an original and profound discovery: that the phenomenon of common sense contains a hidden faculty that may anchor moral and politic

Smart artifacts can deliver a variety of context-aware human-centric services. However, current systems mainly rely on ad-hoc definitions of context information, which makes it difficult to achieve knowledge sharing, reuse and reasoning. Moreover, smart-artifact applications developed by experts sometimes cannot meet end users' needs, but current systems do not allow end users to exert control over their smart homes. In this chapter, the authors discuss a unique technology known as the Sixth Sense Technology, highlighting the future opportunities of such technology in integrating the digital world with the real world. Challenges in implementing such technologies are also discussed along with a review of the different possible implementation approaches. This review is performed by exploring the different inventions in areas similar to the Sixth Sense Technology, namely augmented reality (AR), computer vision, image processing, gesture recognition, and artificial intelligence and then categorizing and comparing between them. Lastly, recommendations are discussed for improving such a unique technology that has the potential to create a new trend in human-computer interaction (HCI) in the coming years.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a probabilistic framework for formulating classical probability theory, quantum probability, thermodynamics, diffusion, and the Wiener integral using a set of four axioms or principles. It explains everything that conventional quantum information theory and classical probability theory achieve. We want to emphasize that this framework is not an interpretation of quantum mechanics such as “Many-Worlds,” “Bohm’s Theory,” or the “Copenhagen interpretation.” It is much more general and can be viewed as a probability algorithm that calculates probabilities of future events. As a result, previously perplexing paradoxes find resolution. In particular, the superposition principle takes on a new meaning. Our probabilistic framework stands apart from the Hilbert space formalism. It relies solely on elementary set theory, classical logic, and complex numbers. Consequently, this theory is accessible for instruction in educational settings. This framework can be regarded as an axiomatic approach to probability in the sense of Hilbert. In his sixth of the twenty-three open problems presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1900, Hilbert called for an axiomatic probability theory.

Abstract:
Abstract Despite significant advancement in medical interventions, patients often struggle with not feeling valued or worthy. While loss of dignity can be a significant struggle for patients nearing death, the concept of “death with dignity” has become entwined with euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. This chapter has documented the state of the science regarding efforts to define dignity based on patient perspectives and the development of dignity therapy. A literature search was implemented in four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and Academic Search Premier) using the terms “Dignity Therapy” and “Chochinov.” Also, articles were identified from bibliographies of the initial evidence set, and additional references known to the authors of this chapter were included. Extensive review of the dignity therapy literature was synthesized to identify the populations of application, common findings, and areas of opportunity for future research. Sixty-seven articles were identified for inclusion in this review. Evidence has demonstrated dignity therapy to have application across various cultures, ages, and diagnoses; high satisfaction with patients and families; and ability to increase sense of meaning, purpose, and will to live. Areas for future research of dignity therapy include use with marginalized peoples, impact on family caregivers, implementation with diverse cultural groups, comparison of dignity therapy to other psychotherapeutic models, and exploration of the mechanisms of impact.
