Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine young female golf player’s experiences of continued golfing as a lower-level athlete based on the self-determination theory and the basic psychological needs. The study was based on a qualitative method where data collection was implemented by eight semi-structured interviews with women aged 22 to 33 years old (M=26.25, SD=4.97). The interview-guide was based on the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000a; 2000b) and previous studies in the field, for example Williams et al. (2012). The data was analysed based on a qualitative content analysis and presented by three themes, competence, belonging and autonomy. The results showed that the participants experienced aspects within competence, for example the opportunity for development and belonging had the greatest positive impact on the women’s experiences of playing golf as a lower-level athlete. In autonomy, it was the free will and the opportunity to choose whenever and wherever they wanted to play that was considered most important for women’s continued golfing. Furthermore, the results were discussed in relation to previous research in the field and the motivational continuum of the self-determination theory. Implications and conclusions along with suggestions for continued research were followed up where recommendations on deeper studies on women’s continued golfing were presented. The study wishes to give more understanding of what women have experienced as important in their continued golfing, which corresponds with what the Swedish Golf Association and the PGA of Sweden are working with to include more women in golf.

Full textPerceived motivational climate may affect an athlete’s performance and well-‐being. The existing motivational climate was therefore assessed in a sample of 87 floorball players competing in the premier league in Sweden (Superligan). They represented 6 different teams (21 % of the teams took part). Self-‐Determination Theory (SDT) states that people have three innate needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. A questionnaire was used to assess the motivational climate and the level of need satisfaction as well as thwarting of the same needs. A positive motivational climate correlated positively with engagement and negatively with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and burnout. In contrast, a negative motivational climate was linked to eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and a lack of engagement. These results are in line with SDT and show why a positive motivational climate is beneficial not only for the individual athlete but also for the team. However small the group that took part is, it is nevertheless worth noting that several players showed symptoms of reduced mental health, particularly so among the players that perceived their motivational climate as more negative in nature. The Swedish Floorball Federation Now has incentive to perform further investigations into the motivational climate to ensure that a positive motivational climate exists in the clubs.

Full textIndividual elite sports can be lonely, and motivation needs to be great for a long period of time in order to maintain the performance level. Coaches are one of the most important influences of athletes’ motivation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to test the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to increase understanding of how motivation arose during relationships between elite athletes and their primary coaches. A comparative design was used, and empirical data based on semi-structured interviews was analyzed using a qualitative thematic analysis. The result presents many similarities and few differences based on the athletes’ and coaches’ perspective. Seven themes were developed based on the three psychological needs of SDT: communication, development, involvement, individualized and situational leadership, attention, give and receive respect and feeling secure. Conclusion: A hierarchy was found between the psychological needs and internalizing identified and integrated regulations was important to elite athletes intrinsic and self-determined extrinsic motivation.

Full textIn today’s society it is more and more common to spend the majority of our days sitting. Studies show that six percent of all the youths are not being physically active in either school or on their free time. The purpose of this study was therefore to find out how physically active young people are in the municipality of Ängelholm and what underlies physical activity and inactivity. The research questions of the study were: to what extent are young people physically active? Why are young people not physically active? Why are young people physically active? To get answers to the purpose a quantitative method was used in the form of questionnaire collection. To analyze the results, I used the self-determination theory and its concepts that underlie an individual’s motivation. The results and conclusion of the study shows that 269 of 301 participants are living up to the recommendations.

Full textThe amount of members in organized sports in Sweden has declined. Football is the biggest sport in Sweden and also the biggest youth- and adolescent sport. How high is the participation motivation in adolescent football players and do they have thoughts about dropping out? Has Covid-19 had an impact on their motivation? The purpose of this essay was to examine the participation motivation in adolescent football players and if it has any connection to their thoughts about dropping out. The purpose was also to examine the impact of Covid-19.The method of this essay has been implemented with a quantitative perspective, where the design of the essay was in form of a survey study. The selection of the essay was 140 football players between the ages of 15 – 19.The results of the essay showed that the participation motivation was generally high but they also have had thoughts about dropping out of football. The results showed a connection between amotivation and thoughts about dropping out and a negative connection between intrinsic motivation and thoughts about dropping out. The results also showed that the motivation has declined during Covid-19.The results of the essay are consistent with previous research and the self-determination theory. More studies on the topic needs to be done and examine the impact of Covid-19. Studies with a qualitative perspective is needed to further examine and gather more information about the impact of Covid-19 on the participation motivation in youth- and adolescent athletes.

Full textThis study is a systematic literature review that aims to examine how mathematical videos influence students’ motivation in mathematics, and how they can be used in teaching. We used the database UniSearch together with our selection criteria to choose relevant articles for our study. The articles were summarized and analyzed. To analyze the articles, we used the three categories in self-determination theory: Autonomy, competence and relatedness. The result from this study shows that mathematical videos meet the categories in self-determination theory. Therefore, mathematical videos could increase students’ motivation in mathematics. Moreover, the result shows that mathematical videos can be used before, during and after mathematics lessons. From these results, we believe that mathematical videos could be a useful support in mathematics teaching. For example, mathematical videos can be used before a lesson in the flipped classroom, during a lesson as a complement to the lecture and after a lesson as a tool to help studying homework.

To quit or not to quit? A literature study of tobacco cessation methods Bjellman, K. The tobacco custom has a long history, and the tobacco related diseases cost the society billions in healthcare costs and production losses. The results from different methods for tobacco cessation are rather modest. The aim with this study was to describe and analyze methods for tobacco cessation. This was done on the basis of the following issues: How takes the methods considerations to people's needs of experiencing self determination, competence and property? How works the methods with starching people's internal motivation? How takes the methods considerations to the people's living environment? The method was a literature study off scientific articles about different methods for tobacco cessation, and different types of guidance's - and self-help materials for tobacco workers and tobacco users. The conclusion is that few methods take considerations both to people's needs of experiencing self determination, competence and property, works in order to starch the internal motivation to stop to smoke, and takes into consideration the client's living environment. Also those methods that meet this quite well have problems with many relapses. The proportion prolonged smoke free clients seems to last approximately the same, irrespective of which method one uses and how well it meets the factors above. Full textFootball fitness is an activity developed in Denmark and is football in small teams with focus on joy and community instead of tactics and skill. The purpose of the study was to investigate the underlying motives for a participation in football fitness. The study included 12 interviewees, three women and nine men aged 25-70 (M= 46.6, SD= 12). All participants had been active in football fitness at least one month before starting the study and all participants were former football players. A semi-structured interview guide was used. The result shows that three core motives for participation; relationships, positive effects of football fitness as well as structure of football fitness. Relationships mean that one motive for participation was the experience of social belonging. Furthermore, positive effects of football fitness mean that the participants valued physical activity beneficial in both physiologically and psychologically. The structure of the activity when it comes to rules and the positive climate is the third motive for participation in football fitness. Based on the results of the present study, it is recommended that an activity promoting the community, highlighting the positive effects of the activiy, and also have a similar approach will demonstrating motivation for participation.

Full textMany research studies have shown the importance of physical activity, above all for children and youth, to maintain the physical and mental health. What happens then if a child does not achieve the recommendations of physical activity? The aim with this study is with the help of in-depth, semi-structured interviews examine whether parents to children between the ages of 8-12 experience pressure and stress due to their child’s physical inactivity. The following questions were used: Do parents feel pressured and worried over their children’s physical inactivity and in that case, how do they try to activate their children? Do parents experience pressure from their surroundings and in that case, how do they handle it? Could this pressure lead to stress for parents? What factors constitute the possible pressure that the parents potentially experience? Most parents of the study declared that they felt stressed and/or worried over their children’s inactivity. Some are trying to make them activate themselves physically through communication and even more drastic measures, such as environmental change in the form of relocation, and also a greater family involvement with changes in routines. Others try not to meddle but instead support their children in their choice of activities, whether that involves physical activity or not. Only a few of the respondents felt pressure. Factors that constitute a pressure over the respondents are probably outer expectations over being a role model for the child as well as the surrounding standards. Pressure is handled in several ways, and it probably does not lead to stress, but instead it seems to be able to arise even though the parents do not experience any pressure. The result of the study shows that more knowledge is needed among parents regarding illness associated with inactivity, and the importance of communication between parents in order to know how widely spread children’s inactivity really is and what could be done jointly in order to prevent it.

Full textAbstract Sports in Sweden has its foundation among voluntary coaches. Those coaches are very important for Swedish sports as they are often seen to be very important to the sport. A voluntary engagement is something done in your spare time and it is unpaid. This study is aimed at smaller sports clubs, especially in the sport of cycling. Often it is the same person that is a coach for training and also are involved in organization, this differs from larger sport clubs. The aim of this study is to examine voluntary coaches in smaller cycling clubs. Understanding how to keep these coaches with great motivation is important also in other places within the organization because of the smaller club. To do this I have used a motivational theory named Self-Determination Theory. In this study I have used qualitative approach as well as I have done six interviews among coaches in cycle clubs. I have used semi-structured interview method and then I have analyzed my data with a qualitative content analysis. The main finding of this study shows that voluntary coaches often are inspired by an intrinsic motivation, and that the coaches often meet their followers with openness. In the discussion, the results of this study get related to earlier research and theories. There I also show a concrete tip for how to strengthen intrinsic motivation in voluntary coaches. This can be useful by voluntary clubs and organizations.

Full textDecreasing levels of sport participation among adolescent girls are a cause of concern. Therefore, by comparing players’ and coaches’ perspective, the aim of this study is to understand the motivation of playing football among fifteen-year-old girls and how the coach effects the motivation. Interview data were analyzed using a comparison method and Self-Determination theory. Results demonstrate both similarities and differences between the themes/motivation factors: 1. Love for the sport, 2. Think of something else, 3. Influence and participation, 4. Feedback and praise, 5. Progress, 6. Friends and team cohesion and 7. Safety and stability. Similarity: Need for competence and relatedness is most important. Difference: Coaches exaggerate the importance of Love for the sport, diminish Influence and participation and believe that the girls want to become professional football players. Conclusion: Many factors affect why adolescent girls continue to play football. A big part is because the coaches recognize what the players want. Through its leadership, coaches meet the players’ psychological basic needs, i.e. autonomy, competence, relatedness, which helps them feel psychological health, well-being and intrinsic motivation.

Full textExercise among seniors increases, and recent studies indicates a gap of Swedish research in this area. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand why seniors engage in physical activity, in this case in form of different group fitness-classes, and what the perceived effect of this consists in. Data were collected from six interviews and then analyzed in relation to the Self-Determination Theory and three important parts of it; autonomy, competence and social involvement. The result indicated several motives/factors for motivation among the participants: 1. Identity, 2. Physical Health, 3. Mental Health, 4. Response, 5. Possibilities to control your body, 6. Connections and Relationships, 7. Context and Routines and 8. Happiness. All three proved to be important but Autonomy and social involvement seemed to be most important among the participants when asked about motivation. In relation to quality of life, all three parts seemed crucial.

Full textPhysical activity is something that can promote good aging and provides important social support that people need. There are many positive aspects to living a physically active life, both for the individual and for society. However, there is too little Swedish research in the area about what motivates the elderly to engage in physical activity. The purpose of the qualitative study is to investigate how older women experienced their participation in a previous exercise group in which they were active about 15 years ago, and how this has subsequently affected their physical activity level. Six women were interviewed and the study was analyzed using the self-determination theory. The results show that several factors are important for the level of physical activity. Motivational factors for being physically active are social affiliation. Also, regularity helps make the exercise feel more fun as it becomes part of them. An additional motivating factor is the physical and psychological benefits of exercise. The reason why one of the participants is not active in the current situation is because she does not belong to a group anymore and lacks the disciplin to train by herself.

Full textThis study aims to investigate economic support carried out by social workers within municipal social services and how they deal with clients who need both economic support and are substance abusers. We made six semi-structured interviews in two municipalities. They were analysed by means of content analysis, system theory and self-determination theory (SDT) and in accordance with professional ethics. Our results show that the social workers face problems in planning and assessment concerning these clients, especially beacuse of social exclusion at the labour market. Leave only one way to re-entrance in society, voluntarily addiction treatment. The social workers are torn between the purpose of control in their investigation and how to support their clients, causing troublesome dilemmas in their profession. These clients are made visible as a vulnerable sub-group of clients in a welfare system built on activity. Motivation and cooperation with other organisations is the key to make change. Our study intends to promote development of both theroretical and practical knowledge in the field.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to identify strategies coaches and physiotherapists use to help an injured athlete back to full fitness. The purpose was also to highlight the cooperation between coaches and physiotherapists. Earlier research suggests social support and psychological strategies have a positive impact on an athlete’s psychological wellbeing after an injury and during the rehabilitation. It was conducted six semi structured interviews with three coaches and three physiotherapists. Findings suggest there are four primary strategies used: (1) goal setting, (2) social support, (3) individualised rehabilitation and (4) individualised support. Findings concerning the cooperation between coaches and physiotherapists had three key components: (1) communication and ethical dilemmas, (2) knowledge and (3) resources. This study suggest that the four primary strategies could be used in purpose of making sport injury rehabilitation more self-determined for the athlete, where copingstrategier works as a useful tool to help an injured athlete manage adversities. The cooperation between coaches and physiotherapists could by indirect means have an impact on an injured athletes rehabilitation process. Resources affect how the communication and knowledge appear surrounding the athlete. Greater resources lead to favourable conditions in the shape of close cooperation between coaches and physiotherapists with knowledge about coaching and rehabilitation which creates more opportunities for an athlete to get back to full fitness following a sports injury.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate mediating effects by self-determined motivation and controlled motivation on the relationship between need satisfaction and gym training. All based on previous research and with the Self-Determination Theory as an analytical standpoint. 107 people participated in the study, of which 47 were men and 60 were women, in ages between 18-59 (M= 29.2, SD=8.4). The result shows that self-determined motivation mediated the relationship between need satisfaction and gym training, while controlled motivation does not. This result correspond with what previous research has shown and emphasizes the importance of self-determined motivation further. The authors of this study calls for qualitative research on this field that can extract empirical data expressed in words rather than numbers.

Full textThe healthcare industry is the largest working group in Sweden and accounts for the largest proportion of illness cases, the main cause of sick leave in healthcare is caused by the organizational and social work environment. The purpose of the study was to investigate employee engagement for staff in health care and social work, as part of the organizational and social work environment. The questions were what the engagement looks like for employees in health care and social work and how the engagement can increase. Previous research has shown that a combination of theories of engagement and motivation has created a deeper understanding in the field. Therefore, the study was based on both theories of engagement and motivation. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses at nursing and care homes, to study the employees' subjective experiences about engagement. A thematic analysis occurred. The result showed that all respondents felt engaged in the work. However, the main points of the discussion were that there were indications that the level of engagement of employees could be different from the individual's perceived level of engagement. Another conclusion was that managers and employees together could have a positive influence on employee engagement, for example through good two-way communication. However, the authors concluded that too few respondents participated to be able to draw general conclusions about engagement.
