Full textThe shipping sector is a significant source of sulfur- and nitrogen-emissions. Depositions of oxidized sulfur and nitrogen i.e. sulfate and nitrate, in the form of wet and dry deposition contribute to acidification and deterioration of air quality. Political instruments to reduce sulfur emissions during the last years have contributed to the reduction of sulfur emissions, i.e. new instruments have been implemented in form of restrictions in sulfur content in ships fuel. The shipping sector’s emissions of sulfur and nitrogen have been studied by using “the Unified EMEP Model”, a chemical atmospheric transport model, with data collected during the year 2005. The deposition of sulfur and nitrogen from shipping in different countries has been compared to the total deposition from all sources in Europe. Deposition of sulfur and nitrogen in the Baltic Sea and the countries in the in the draining basin from individual sea has also been studied. The results have shown that deposition of sulfur and nitrogen is intense near the source. But it also spread far away from the source, however with decreasing concentrations in relation with distance to the source. Depositions in the north of Europe from shipping are highest near big ports and Clear tracks from shipping in the depositions field are obtained near big ports and also in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Countries with longer coastline have higher concentrations than those with less or none sea traffic in the near region. To study how roughness length over sea impacts the spread of sulfur the Charnock-parameter has been varied from 0,00072 to 0,085. The study doesn’t provide any clear findings of influence of the parameter in spread of sulfur. A theory to this result is the low resolution in the model. It is probably too small differences in the depositions field due to the roughness length. Monthly variations of sulfur and nitrogen deposits in the Baltic Sea have been made in order to study how variations in such precipitation affect the distribution of sulfur and nitrogen.

Full textThe duties onboard any ship include moments of hard physical labour, work in darkness, aloftand within enclosed spaces which means that a seafarer must be fit for duty. The nationalrequirements for medical fitness of seafarers differ between countries, although they are allbased on the same international standard. The aim of this report is to compare the differencesbetween the regulations concerning medical certificates for seafarers in the Scandinaviancountries and to investigate the history of the Swedish regulations.We conclude that Sweden would benefit from the reintroduction of the old system ofSeaman’s Doctors, who presumably are more competent than a doctor not specialized injudging the fitness of a seafarer. This system is still in operation and working well in bothDenmark and Norway.Finally this report consists of the authors’ own reflexions regarding the medical examinationsand certificates for seafarers. We also include a few suggestions for further research.

Full textThe states maritime activity is today an area with many authorities involved with an unclear division of tasks. It is also difficult to see how well it is organized to withstand a crisis or war. The purpose of this paper is to examine how effective the states maritime authorities is in a crisis, how well the requirements for maritime security are met and how the Defense Forces role is formed.In the form of a case study with a theoretical deductive base and qualitative textual analysis, Graham Allison's organizational theory and theories of maritime security is used to analyze the efficiency of the maritime authorities. The empirical data is in the form of regulations, instructions and rules letters that are set to the each authority.The study shows that the current organization of the states maritime authorities is not optimal to act in a crisis and the requirements for maritime security are met, but room for improvement exists. One conclusion is that a closer collaboration between the authorities would solve many of the problems that currently exist. Finally there is a discussion of how a future organization could take shape.

Full textDecision making is the most important of all managerial activities. The purpose of this study is to examine how commanders experience decision-making processes on board and in the surrounding organization. The survey was conducted through interviews with three masters. Interviews were chosen to listen to the interviewees’ perceived world and they have been semi-structured, as support an interview guide has been used. In this shape it is possible to follow threads or whim but also to go back and clarify. As a background for analyze, theories of decision-making, responsibility in shipping and work in teams or groups are described. The analysis has been based on a model of decision theory. The result is a story by the decision making process and it gave two interesting conclusions: when control by management companies is increasing masters experience loss of power and distance to decisions but on the other hand they are clear that they are in charge and acquire strategies for retaining that.

Full textThe purpose with this study is to describe how standard of living and working conditions in Swedish ships has changed as a result of the MLC-2006. This study shows how the changes have been experienced by the Swedish crews unions, the Swedish ship officers associations and the Swedish transport agencies representatives and two captains as a result of MLC-2006 implementation. The study was carried out by means of interviews in order to display implementation of MLC-2006 has been experienced in Swedish shipping. Results show that the representatives experienced no significant change in Swedish shipping after the MLC-2006 implementation. MLC-2006 resulted in higher standards in ships, a fair competition between flag states and to the advancement of seamen's rights in global shipping.

Full textAlkohol har sedan länge varit starkt förknippat med sjöfarten. Detta fick oss intresserade och vi valde att fördjupa oss i ämnet. I vårt examensarbete har vi valt att fokusera på huruvida rederiernas alkoholpolicy efterföljs ombord på fartygen.
För att få en uppfattning så använde vi oss av metodtriangulering. Vi utförde en enkätundersökning bland skolans nautiska elever angående den rådande alkoholkulturen till sjöss, därefter intervjuades de tre rederier som nämnts mest i enkätundersökningen för att få deras kommentarer på resultatet.
Resultatet av vårt arbete visar att alkoholpolicyn inte efterföljs till fullo, då 70 % av eleverna uppfattat att policyn brutits en eller flera gånger. Detta trots att rederierna i de intervjuer som genomförts, upplever det som detta. En generell uppfattning bland eleverna visar att flertalet är emot att besättningsmedlemmar dricker sig berusade ombord. De anser dock att det bör vara accepterat med öl eller vin i samband med måltid.
For many years alcohol have been strongly associated with shipping. This got us interested and therefore we chose to find out more about this subject. In our thesis we have chose to focus on how the shipping companies' policy about alcohol is followed onboard.
To get an understanding we created a questionnaire about the alcohol culture onboard, that was answered by the merchant academy's nautical students. Thereafter we interviewed the three companies that were most represented in the questionnaire to get their opinion about the result.
The result of our thesis shows that the alcohol policy isn't followed onboard even if the shipping companies have this opinion. It is stated by 70 percent of the students that they once or more got the opinion that the policy was broken. The general opinion among the students is that they are against heavy drinking onboard, but that the crewmembers that aren't on duty should be allowed drinking beer or wine when having dinner.

Vi tilldelades detta projektet av Kalmar Sjöfartshögskola. Projektet var att tillverka en bullerkarta för skolfartyget M/S Calmare Nyckel. Då skolfartyget inte överskrider 500 bruttoton krävs ej en bullerkarta enligt Sjöfartsverket, men det fanns en förfrågan och önskan från skolan att tillverka en för utbildningssyfte och få en praktisk anknytning. Vid dem mätningarna som krävdes ombord rättade vi oss efter ISO 2923:1996(E) samt Sjöfartsverkets författningssamling 2005:23 vid tillverkning av bullerkartan. Skolan tillhandahöll oss med godkänd mätutrustning samt mätprotokoll. Vi fick ett bra tillfälle att göra samtliga mätningar när skolfartyget gjorde sin sjöresa från Simrishamns varv till Kalmar, med goda väderförhållanden och samtliga maskiner i normala driftsförhållanden. Resultaten blev en lättförstådd och användarvänlig bullerkarta i A4 format som kan anslås varsomhelst på fartyget eller användas i utbildningssyfte.
We were assign this project by Kalmar maritime academy. The project was to produce a noise map for the school boat M/S Calmare Nyckel. The school boat does not exceed 500 dead weight ton and is not required a noise map according to national maritime administration, but there was an request and desire from the school to produce it for education purpose and for a practical connection. For the measurements that were required on board we used the regulations from ISO 2923:1996 (E), and national maritime administration's statute book 2005:23 with production of the noise map. The school provided us with validated measuring equipment and measuring protocol. We had a good opportunity to do all measurements when the school boat did its sea travel from Simrishamn's shipyard to Kalmar, with good weather conditions and all machines in normal operation conditions. The results became a easy understood and friendly used noise map in A4 formats that can be assigned anywhere on the boat or to be used in education purpose.

Full textThis thesis was a research to find out how the situational leadership theory could enrich the leading role, the crew and the working environment on board a vessel. A leadership which puts great demands on the leader when it comes to being flexible, knowledgeable and skilled at being able to read other people. Herseys model clarifies the leaderships complexity and provides a structure to work with. The model also give an opportunity to create a dynamic way of working that develops his co-workers to become responsible and independent individuals. I chosed a qualitative research method where I have interviewed 6 officers in different positions and from various ships. The answers to the questions were analyzed together with the litterature review I have done. The method chosen for the qualitative interview provides information that makes it possible to gain insight and understanding of the officers leadership in their daily work. In spite of the fact that situational leadership theory is complex, the results showed that many of the basic ideas from the theory about how a successful leadership should be carried out was in the interviewed officers’minds. Some of them used it also in practice with success. A result of this study shows the situational leaderships progression in which many different factors shaping and developing the leader and the employees. This progression is one of the merits when working on the basis of the situational leadership. After this study, I think that an enthusiastic leader who has knowledge about how the tools in Herseys leadership model should be used will create a positive work environment and a satisfied shipowner.

Full textWith an ever decreasing Swedish tonnage more and more maritime graduates seek out other segments than the traditional Swedish trades. A major one of these segments is the Norwegian offshore market. The purpose of this study was to investigate recently graduated maritime officer’s experiences of stress and worries during their first turns as active officers and if these experiences differed depending on which segment they were active in. A qualitative method with personal interviews was used to investigate these questions. Eight recently graduated officers were interviewed, four from the traditional Swedish merchant navy and four from the Norwegian offshore industry. All graduated in the spring of 2012.The results from the interviews showed that the officers, not depending on which segment they were active in, experienced higher levels of stress during their first turns than later in their career. This was due to worry with the graduates about their own professional abilities and the increase in responsibility that graduates experience in the beginning of their careers. The study also found that lack of sleep is a major factor in the stress equation and that this was more common within the offshore industry, due to the extensive use of the two-watch system within that segment.

Full textCertain types of cyber attacks have increased between 2015 and 2016, this is acknowledged both on land in the shipping sector. Given the unique situation of shipping, it is of interest to investigate how shipping companies have chosen to protect themselves from cyberattacks. Four shipping companies have been interviewed regarding the cybersecurity of their vessels. The results of the interviews have since been compared against IMO's guidelines released in 2016 to investigate whether there are deficiencies in cybersecurity on swedish ships. The results show that there are shortcomings in several of the shipping companies interviewed, primarily in the form of training of personnel. The result also shows that there are clear contrasts between smaller shipping companies and larger shipping companies, where the smaller shipping companies have fewer measures in place while the larger shipping companies have more to prevent or handle a cyberattack.

Full textSyftet med följande studie var att undersöka hur olycksanalysmetoderna CREAM och DREAM kan anpassas till sjöfartsdomänen, samt hur begreppet den mänskliga faktorn kan beskrivas och hur kan den analyseras. Teoristudier samt intervjuer med anställda vid sjöfartsinspektionen och domänexperter har genomförts. Ett förslag på hur en anpassad analysmetod skulle kunna se ut redovisas som BREAM (Bridge Reliability and Error Analysis Method). Den anpassade metoden har utvärderats med hjälp av experter inom domänen. Utvärderingen visar på att metoden fungerar bra men att ytterligare specificering av metoden till domänen är önskvärt.

Full textOn August 20, 2013 the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 entered into force. This study has through interviews with navigating officers onboard Swedish flagged vessels and through a literature study, examined the effect of the new Convention seen from the navigating officers’ point of view. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into how the Convention effected the crew and examine how the requirements are complied with and what changes has been made onboard in regards of hours of work, hours of rest and manning levels. The interviews revealed that no major changes have been made onboard as result of the implementation of the Convention. The reason for this is that most of the requirements of the Convention was already implemented in Swedish law. It appeared, however, that seafarers are experiencing difficulties in meeting the demands regarding hours of rest and that this is not being documented truthfully. The reason for this is percieved to be that the manning levels onboard the ships today is not sufficient. The results show that many solutions exist to this problem, and that greater demands needs to be placed on shipowners and flag states for a change to take place.

Full textVi ville med detta arbete ta reda på varför svenska sjöbefälstudenter söker sig till Maersks sjöbefälsutbildning istället för till sjöbefälsutbildningen i Kalmar. Vi ville också ta reda på vilka faktorer som spelar in vid val av sjöbefälsutbildning, hur studenterna kommit i kontakt med utbildningen samt hur de upplever sin studietid på SIMAC.
Under ett studiebesök på SIMAC har vi intervjuat svenska studenter. Vi valde att göra en kvalitativ studie med öppna frågeställningar. Intervjuerna följdes upp med en enkätundersökning. Dessa metoder lämpade sig bra då vi ville få fram studenternas åsikter.
Det resultat vi fick fram var att de studenter som deltog i studien uppfattade sin skola som något ostrukturerad. De hade även svårigheter med det danska språket. Den huvudsakliga anledningen till att studenterna går kvar på skolan är anställningen hos Maersk som ger goda möjligheter till ett välbetalt arbete.
With this thesis we would like to find out why Swedish students at a nautical choose to study at Maersks master programme instead of Kalmar Maritime Academy.
We also wanted to find out what factors play a role in the choice of school, how the students come in contact with the school and how they experience their studies at SIMAC.
We have interviewed some of the Swedish students during a visit at SIMAC. We chose to perform a qualitative study consisiting of open questions. The interviews were followed up with a questionnaire. These methods were suitable since we were interested in the student´s opinions. Our result is that the students who took part in our study perceived their school sometimes as unstructured and confusing. They also experienced problems with the Danish language. The main reason for staying at the school is the upcomming, remunerative, work at Maersk.

Full textThis study has addressed and compiled an overall picture of effective exhaust gascleaning within the relevant frameworks. This through literature and personalcommunication with interested parties. The survey focused on Karlshamnsverketssolutions to current environmental issues. The same issues are today a major drivingforce for the development of the shipping industries. The dialogues that form thebasis for the personal communication were carried out at Karlshamnsverket andover the telephone and then analyzed against efficient exhaust gas purification atsea. This with the study's questions as a starting point. The results showed that thesolutions to set environmental goals for Karlshamnsverket have been developedaccording to the efficiency of the business. There were no direct initiatives to try tosolve the problems on a broader level that could affect shipping industries. A basicinvestigation into why exhaust gases affect the environment has been identified andvarious relevant solutions have been developed at an angle to shipping.Furthermore, it emerged that the choice of fuel has a major impact on theenvironment and that development in this area is at an early stage. AtKarlshamnsverket, this was the case because burning biofuel was not relevant as thedemand was not large enough. Parallels to shipping show that the demand foralternative fuels is greater and the development is ahead here. Furthermore, thestudy shows that we need to make changes to achieve set environmental goalsbecause today we have a negative impact on the environment. To meet any futureneeds for efficient exhaust gas cleaning, continued strong and broad technologicaldevelopment is required.

Full textThe main focus of this study was to examine the current state of LNG, and its applications as an alternative fuel for industry, shipping and power production. Gathering of data, and the subsequent scrutiny of the collected material, was performed in accordance with the methodology of a literary study. The result offered an overall view of what has happened up until now. It also suggested what possible developments might follow in the near future. The purpose of the study was to describe how far the development has progressed, with regards to LNG and its infrastructure. The conclusions that could be drawn from the study were that things are moving forward. Some sectors have however reached further than others. Economic and environmental reasons appear as main driving factors for those who are considering LNG as a part of their plan of operations. Lack of infrastructure is said to be a key reason why LNG still hasn´t gained momentum. Numerous LNG-terminals have been built in North America and around northwestern Europé, including one in Sweden. More facilities are being built in the years to come as well, steadily improving the availability of LNG.

Full textWe have in this thesis examined the work situation for masters in the Swedish merchant navy focusing on the administrative workload and how said workload have changed since the implementation of the ISM-code. Within the shipping business of today there is a lot of talk about the increasing number of administrative tasks on board and how they have affected the work situation. This made us want to examine if there actually was any such increase and to what extent said increase in that case have affected the work situation both on board and ashore. We have during our survey performed interviews with masters and ship-owner representatives at four companies within the Ro-Pax business who has traffic on Swedish ports asking them about the work situation on board and how it has changed during the last 15 years with respect to the administrative workload. The survey shows a substantial increase in the administrative workload both on board and ashore, mainly as a result of new regulations and vastly improved means of communication between ships and the organization ashore. In general there is a broad acceptance of the benefits of the ISM-code but a widespread skepticism when it comes to other regulations and government requirements. As far as the improved means of communication is concerned the increase in the number of messages received during a regular work day is emphasized and a question is raised whether there are valid reasons for the increase or if it to some extent is a way to clear your own desk by moving a task to another part of the organization.

Full textThe aim of this report is to survey the experience of loneliness and social isolation among third- and fourth-year students at the Kalmar Maritime Academy, during their time at sea. The purpose is also to shed light on the consequences that these students may experience. It is a quantitative study, more specifically a survey-study where the students were questioned about their experiences of loneliness and social isolation as well as a number of factors and symptoms related to these feelings. The gathered answers were analyzed and compared in order to find any patterns of association. Our conclusion is that experiences of loneliness and social isolation are relatively common among the students. These feelings are associated with symptoms like depression and a decrease in performance. There are a number of variables that are associated these feelings, such as the relation to the supervisor, martial status, the atmosphere and fellowship onboard.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of this paper was to investigate and compare the expectations and actual experiences at Birka, partly from the organizers and from the visitor´s side. By finding out what kind of experience the Swedish National Heritage Board and Strömma Turism och Sjöfart want to give their visitors, we could then measure the expectations and experiences with the visitors and thus compare them. Methodology: We conducted this study by holding two interviews, one with Lena Johansson of the Swedish National Heritage Board and one with Andreas Forsgren at Strömma Turism och Sjöfart. Furthermore we distributed a survey on two separate occasions for visitors to Birka. Conclusions: Both the Swedish National Heritage Board and Strömma Turism och Sjöfart aims to give its visitors a genuine and educational experience in a Viking Age setting. The result showed that visitor´s expectations are in accordance with the organizations objectives, while the actual experience varied. For many of the visitors the experience surpassed their expectations, but for most of the visitor´s the experience corresponded to their expectations. Only two people felt that the visit did not meet their expectations.

Full textThis work answered the question about how the situation is today on the bridge for the nautical officers and how the amount of rules and guidelines that exists affects his ability to manoeuvre the ship in a safe way. To study this we have performed a literature study where we studied the Swedish Transport Agency’s published accident investigation reports as well as research in the fields of human error, shipping organization and safety at sea. Our findings show that the crew on board has been reduced due to technical advancement. However, the rules have not followed the same pace and therefore today’s ships may not fulfil the requirements of minimum manning on board. Although we can tell that the officers have an increased workload we cannot see why they have acted as they did at the time of the accidents. It can also be shown that there is a need for future research where, for example, studies on how the accident investigation reports are designed.

Full textAbstract Whilst the on- board training was carried out, we considered the amount of training onboard on the behalf of CPR and AED to be unsatisfying. The purpose of this study is to examine the guidelines for the equipment that should be held onboard, with regard to AED, onboard Swedish, Norwegian and Danish ships with focus on Sweden and Swedish companies. The method used for this essay was carried out by sending out a question form by e-mail to all companies registered as members of “Sveriges Redareförening”. We sent different questions to the Scandinavian maritime administrations, and also performed interviews. As shown in the result, 17 of the 22 companies that filled in the form answered that they have at least one AED onboard each of their ships and about half of the companies have had an incident onboard. It is apparent in our studies that no national or international requirements exist which are mandatory.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine how a Navigating Officer should pilot his vessel safely while taking the Collision Regulations (COLREGs) into account whilst in a crossing situation in which a give-way vessel does not give way. We have examined how these situations can be solved by obtaining qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with Navigating Officers from Stena Line, Scandlines and Wallenius. All the officers whom we have interviewed told us that, in their experience, it is common to meet a ship that does not follow the COLREGs. By putting our respondents’ solutions to the test in the ship simulator at Kalmar Maritime Academy we were able to conclude the pros and cons of different approaches to the problem arising in a crossing situation when a give-way vessel coming from port does not give way. Through this process we (the writers) have gained a better understanding as to how the COLREGS should be applied in crossing situations and we hope that all readers can assimilate this knowledge by reading our thesis.

Full textFires onboard a seagoing vessel is a very serious accident since you can not rely on shorebased firefighers. The only resource available is the crew and their ability to tackle the situation. Fires can quickly get uncontrollable since there is large amounts of fueloil and even the cargo might be flammable. The purpose with this thesis is to highlight those places onboard that have the greatest risk of fire. So that the crew can either awoid fire or be better prepared if a fire starts. The result is based upon data taken from incidentreports from Northern European countries and vessels with length greater than 100m. The conclusion that was made is that the engineroom area was the most common place for fires. The most common reasons for the fire to start was a leakage of flammable liquid or electrical failiures.

Full textShipboard operations have become more reliant of data communication and many of the duties on board may be facilitated if the crew can access information stored elsewhere. The broadband connection between ship and shore is mostly done via satellite communication where long distances and limited data rate results in inefficient data communication. This study examines network optimization and the performance improvement this can have regarding slow WAN connections via satellite. The survey showed that the biggest issue with data communication via satellite is the signal delay caused by the long transmission distance which means that there will be performance degradation for data traffic and users will experience the data communication as slow. To solve this there is equipment that enhances the performance of the connection and handles the data communication by implementing various techniques. To investigate how much the performance improvement can be this study carried out a number of experiments with network optimization equipment. The experiments evaluated file transfer with and without network optimization. The results show that the network optimization gives a major performance improvement regarding file transfer.

Full textThis study aims to find out which style of leadership graduating students from the four- year Nautical Science Programme in Kalmar believe that a good ship officer should possess, and examine how it corresponds to the style of leadership a shipping company seeks from its officers. When the interviews were completed, the interview results were analyzed and compared with the theories of leadership. The results showed that the majority of the students agree to that a good ship officer should have an open leadership where you treat your employees equally and can receive criticism. Simultaneously, it is important to be able to show who is in charge of decision-making. The shipping companies describe that the leadership they seek from their officers must be a distinctly but adaptable leadership, with different types of leadership at different times.

Full textInternational Maritime Organisation (IMO) have for many years worked to simplify and harmonise the reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages. The purpose has been to minimize the amount of data and to simplify declarations and documents required port states. The latest action taken in Europe is the EU directive 2010/65/EU so called Maritime Single Window (MSW). This study examine the effects and change in work since Maritime Single Window was implemented in Europe for users connected to the Swedish maritime sector. A survey investigation form was used as method and presented as a questionnaire form with a total nr of 20 questions. Semi structured qualitative interviews were also conducted to compare and confirm the results from the questionnaire form. The study shows that the directive 2010/65/EU has resulted in general increased work for users of Maritime Single Window. The conclusion of the study shows that the increased work is generated by a not yet fulfilled purpose of the directive to harmonise and simplify reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages.

Detta papper utvärderar och verifierar elektroniken som behövs för att beräkna intelligenta algoritmer som minskar bränsle konsumtionen för kommersiella fartyg. Detta görs genom att sammanfoga avancerade funktioner i en och samma elektroniska enhet som kontrollerar bränsle insprutningen på stora diesel motorer, denna elektronik är känd som en varvtals regulator. Kontroll systemet är klassificerat som ett säkerhetskritiskt system. Detta betyder att elektroniken måste utformas för att vara felsäker. För att tillåta framtida forskning och utveckling behöver plattformen vara flexibel. Den ska tillåta konfiguration av hårdvara och mjukvara ändringar. Samverkan mellan hårdvara och mjukvara. För effektiv installation samt drifttagning, måste systemet vara automat-kalibrerande och utrustat med programmerbara byglingar som möjliggör en kostnadseffektiv lösning. Beräkningen av bränsle optimeringen behöver en detaljerad modell av fartygets rörelse. Detta möjliggörs genom att integrera moderna sensorer och en mängd olika kommunikationsmedier. Bland annat så utvärderades gyroskop kontra accelerometrar för att hitta den bästa lösningen i förhållande till kostnad och kvalitet. Denna design ersätter den nuvarande produkten DEGO III. Den nya produkten behöver samma funktionalitet samt en mängd nya funktioner. Fokus har varit kommunikation, metoder för att samla sensordata och ökad beräknings kraft. När en ny generation av en produkt ska utvecklas finns uppgifter så som att välja komponenter, frågor gällande mönsterkorts layout och en utvärdering av leverantörs källor. Tillverkningen av prototypen inkluderar utvärdering av produktions metoder för att effektivisera tillverkning och verifiering.

Full textThis paper takes a look at the tonnage tax implemented in Sweden in 2017. The paper presents basic information about the tonnage tax in Sweden and a comparison to its neighbouring countries Finland and Denmark to give the reader understanding why Sweden has decided to implement the new tonnage tax system. The paper asks the question of how the new system affects a shipping company in practice through a case study of three different vessels where the economic result is presented through a result calculation in simplified form. Furthermore the paper asks the question whether the vessels size or what type of vessel it is, affect the economic result, positively or negatively. The paper shows that there is a major difference, between ships of different sizes, whether it is positive or negative to adopt the new system. The paper also shows that there are large differences in costs for the new system depending on what type of vessel it concerns.

Full textIn this report we address a problem at sea, namely alcohol. The limit at sea measured in ‰ (permille) is at 1,0 ‰ but in a car the limit is 0,2 ‰. This topic is relevant and it has also been brought up in a TV-show that showed people under the influence of alcohol being taken care of by the coastguard (www.kanal5.se). With this in mind we're presenting a design proposal of an alcolock module to install in pleasure boats. The module should be simple to use and not to be seen as a burden. The purpose of this alcolock is to prevent people under the influence of alcohol from hurting themselves or others in their environment due to inattention or recklessness. Everyone onboard should have their own assignments to create the harmony of “Happy Ship”. The study of the alcolock module consists of surveys and interviews with the users to get as close to an independent view as possible regarding design and function, without our influence. To aid us, we used a theoretic framework called Activity Theory (AT). The result was a design proposal of an alcolock combined with a drivers license. The drivers license is inserted in the card reader of the alcolock module and will remain there for the duration of the trip. This design proposal might result in a safer environment at sea, since the operator has to breathe in the alcolock, and possess a valid drivers licence to be able to start the boat. If the operator has alcohol on his/her breath the speed will be reduced with consideration of the amount of alcohol. The insurance policy might also either be reduced or increased, depending on if there were alcohol on the operators breath or not. The reason for this is that the boat has to be movable in case of bad weather or an accident. There was also a suggestion to how the log on process would work with the different administrational pages.

Full textSäkerhet är en viktig del för att minska risken för olyckor ombord fartyg och yachter. Trots gällande bestämmelser och regler kvarstår rapporter om dödliga olyckor på alla typer av fartyg. Tidigare studier visar att på alla arbetsplatser är attityder mot risker en viktig del för att skapa en säker miljö på arbetsplatsen. Med tanke på antalet olyckor i rapporter ombord fartzg, undersökte denna studie de befintliga attityderna till säkerhet bland besättningen ombord kommersiellt registrerade yachter. Omfattande semistrukturerade intervjuer med åtta besättningmedlemmar genomfördes, och resultaten visade ignorerande för befintliga bestämmelser ombord bland besätnningen. Vidare visade studien på att attityder till säkerhet ombord inter var enbart positiva på grund av flera faktorer som skapar beteenden som inte följer säkerhetsförfarandena. Resultatet visade att flera faktorer hindrar en mer positiv inställning till säkerhet. De befintliga attityderna påverkas av den nuvarande kulturen i branschen, andra besättningsmedlemmar och arbetsgivare. Men också arbetssäkerhet och tidsfaktorer spelade en roll i deras beteende och hur de hanterade risker. Trots påvisade resultat visade responderna en vilja att förändras och att anta en mer positiv inställning till säkerhet.

Full textThe life onboard a vessel is isolated, therefore it’s important that the crew is trained to handle emergencies. The purpose of this report is to survey the experience of safety drills according to students at Kalmar Maritime Academy. By using a quantitative survey method, the quality of the safety drills could be compared between different ship types, crew sizes and crew languages. How to improve safety drills were also surveyed. The results show that the quality of safety drills is good but could be improved. According to the results quality doesn’t differ depending on ship types. However, the majority of the respondents preferred smaller crews and Swedish instructors leading the safety drills in order to achieve better commitment among the crew. More time for planning and implementation, more realistic and various scenarios together with better commitment within the entire crew were suggestions as to how to improve safety drills.
