Full textToday there is no evaluation of the psychological aptitude of applicants during the admission process to the merchant marine officer program at the maritime academies in Sweden. Pilots and train drivers have similar responsibilities, and their applicants are thoroughly tested and evaluated psychologically before admission to their educational programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current use of psychological evaluation in the transport sector and the possible effects following an implementation of psychological evaluations of students at the maritime academies during the admission process. A qualitative comparison of the different laws, rules and procedures for evaluating psychological aptitude in the three transport sectors, railway, aviation and shipping, was made. The strategies used today by different ship owners to determine the psychological aptitude of merchant marine officers during their recruitment processes was also investigated. An implementation of psychological aptitude tests during the admission process would result in an extra expense, but the amount of students who discontinue their education would probably decrease, saving the community unnecessary educational expenses. Most importantly, the number of accidents could be expected to decrease since the human factor is the cause of over one- third of all marine accidents in Swedish territorial waters.

Full textThe purpose: We have investigated the relationship between theoretical and practical learning of the Nautical Science Program(4years) at the Linnaeus University. We focused on examining whether the theoretical knowledge is a prerequisite for the students to meet the expected learning outcomes during the first ship based training. Method: We preformed a literature review covering four different educations. We did also look in to three different types of mentoring models which in one way or another are applicable to those courses. In order to critically examine our literature and to find out the actual condition, we conducted five interviews with informants. Result: Made it possible to see a number of similarities in educational programs approach between theoretical and practical learning and guidance models used. Conclusion: The Basic Safety Training is a prerequisite for students to go out on the ship based training but it is not a prerequisite for achieving the expected learning outcome. We have noted that the supervisor and the supervisor’s knowledge and skills plays a central role for the conditions in which the student is given in order to achieve the study objectives of the first ship based training.

In the work process, which has been going on for more than a year, we have discussed things such as the conditions for a project of this type, the interest from students, the school and the industry as well as purely technical aspects around the construction of a ship model, its electronic and mechanical systems and how such a model could be implemented and used in the education of students at the academy. This thesis also brings up things such as thoughts around the students safety when building and using the model. We have used the method Grounded Theory and have reached the conclusion that the Kalmar Maritime Academy have exceptional and very unique conditions to start a project where manned models is used in the education of officers.

Full textModern ships have the ability to navigate with the use of ECDIS only. ECDIS is dependent on many subsystems to function optimally. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a tool with which you can examine a specific system to detect potential construction errors and deficiencies in the production design. This thesis has used a FMEA to investigate ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar to examine how ECDIS was affected when one or more of the subsystems connected to ECDIS have failed. The purpose of this study was to detect design errors, deficiencies and limitations of the ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar. It could be demonstrated that some of the alarms in ECDIS that should alert the navigator that a subsystem has failed not has worked according to the manufacturer´s instructions. Additionally has some features of ECDIS not operated according to the manufacturer's instructions and some simulator functions which should test a specific situation in a safe environment have not worked.

Full textThe shipping students at the Kalmar Maritime College are undergoing a total training course of 12 months in the form of vessel-proposed training divided into three different periods during their four-year education. The practice gives the students an opportunity to learn the profession in a practical way and not just from the textbook. Practical vessels are developed using the Institute of the SUI (Institute of Maritime Training) and provide access to a variety of types of vessels. The lake captain students are given the opportunity to choose their internship by wishing for a ship on which they want to carry out their practice, but this does not guarantee that they will receive the ship they wanted when there are many students and few ships. Students get a call from the SUI when it’s time for them to choose their ships, this is done at random and based on students that have clarified the most courses. The process for many people is considered stressful because they don’t have much time to choose. This study aims to examine the factors experienced by sea captain students in their choice of places and make a good practice, as well as how students know about everything afterwards. To find out, a qualitative interview study was conducted involving six sea command students who were in their senior year. The results of the study showed that there were many different factors that weighed in their choices as what contributed to a good practice that felt most positive but also some negative things, focused on the SUI electoral process.

Full textIn engineering courses, students deepen their knowledge in the later part of the program in form of specializations or elective courses. This is something that is not available to students who study for marine engineer at Kalmar Maritime Academy, a situation that has been present at Chalmers University of Technology since 2009. The purpose of the study is to explore the interest in elective courses of 7.5 credits apiece for marine engineer students at Kalmar Maritime Academy. A questionnaire study was carried out to ascertain as to wheather which topics were of interest, how many courses the student wanted to read, the durability of the course, if interest in the elective course was missing, and if so why. The survey results showed that the subjects of most interest to students at the bachelor level were offshore/oil rig and ashore courses. At the advanced level, electric and control engineering together with mechanical engineering were desirable. The study showed that students want to read two elective courses during the last term. A result cannot be obtained as to why students do not wish to introduce elective courses, this can be attributed to the large spread of responses.

Full textAbstract Kalmar Maritime Academy has a boiler that is used for educating marine engineers, technicians and service engineers. The boiler is used to provide students with training in programming of the control system and also to gain practical knowledge of the control equipment. The original electrical installation for the control and monitoring system was impractically designed, where a switching of cable connections in the system was required when changing between different exercises. There were also absences of real documentation for the installation. Due to these circumstances, the Maritime Academy’s planned expansion of the facility was deemed to be too complicated in its current state. The purpose of our assignment was to develop a solution for a new electrical installation for the boiler and also the practical implementation of this new installation. The goal was for the operator to easily be able to operate the boiler and also to simplify the changeover between the different types of exercises without having to reconnect any cables. The electrical installation would also get a new look with a new housing that would better represent a modern electrical installation. To achieve the objectives for the assignment a project method was chosen, which is preferred when planning and for completion of a specific task. The result of this project where a new electrical installation to the Maritime Academy’s steam boiler that has an improved safety, better ease of use for the operator and has a new modern design.
