Full textEvery day in medical care the nurse and the patient meet, they are not just
represented as the care giver and the care taker, but also as two unique
individuals. The meeting is a very important part in caring and few studies have
been made on this topic from the patient.s perspective. The purpose of this study
was to describe the patient.s perspective on the meeting with the nurse. The study
is a literature review, where articles have been reviewed, encoded, and then
categorized. The result builds on our four main categories, confirmed as a unique
indidual, the meaning of the information according to the patient, the humanistic
side of the nurse, and the importance of humor in the meeting. The patients.
experiences of the meeting with the nurse are presented under these categories. To
be treated as a unique individual was the main conclusion of this study.
Furthermore, the information, and how the nurse gave the information, was of
great importance in order for the patient to feel security.

Full textForty-six percent of the women in Sweden have been subjected toviolence by a man after their 15th birthday. Violence against women is a societalproblem that is often hidden. Health care is often the first and sometimes the onlyauthority that the abused woman comes in contact with. Aim: The aim was toidentify the barriers that affect nurses' approach towards abused women. Method:A literature review with a systematic approach. Results: After analysis of tenstudies, two categories and six subcategories were identified: individual factors(education, experience, attitudes) and organizational factors (environment, guidelines, resources). Conclusion: Nurses felt insecure and unprepared tointervene with women suspected of being exposed to domestic violence, becauseof individual and organizational factors that emerge in this literature review.

Full textBackground: Encounter is an important aspect of care and something that occurs in every meeting between patient and nurse. Aim: The aim with this study was to investigate what characterizes the good encounter versus the less good encounter of the nurse on a somatic ward within Europe, through the patient's perspective. Method: Literature study with descriptive design, based on ten qualitative original articles. Findings: The results showed that patients were in general satisfied with the encounter received from the nurses. Ten categories were created to describe the good and the less good encounter. The categories that emerged were; (1) information and knowledge, (2) communication, (3) technical aspects and skillfulness, (4) organizational aspects, (5) participation, (6) to be treated with respect, dignity and security, (7) personalized and person- centered care, (8) positive, happy and encourage close relationships, (9) to anticipate the need and (10) caring attitude. Patients valued the nurses communication, information, technical skillfulness, competence, positive and caring attitude, to be treated as an individual, feel noticed and be involved. The patients experienced that less good encounter was were the nurses were non empathic, did not show compassion or respect, gave insufficient information and did not invite patients to participate. One cause for the less good encounter was different organizational deficiencies such as lack of staff, which led to the nurses being busy and therefore having less time for the patients. Conclusion: The encounter is of great importance and affects patients daily. Increased knowledge of the encounter highlights areas which offers room for improvement.

Full textEvery day, people are exposed to sexual assault. This is a traumatic event that can provoke a crisis reaction from the victim. It is therefore important that nurses know the best way to respond to these persons when encountering them. The purpose of this study was to examine what nurses who work with this patient group consider to be a good encounter. An empirical qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in two gynecological emergency departments in southern Sweden. The data that emerged from the interviews were analyzed with the help of a qualitative content analysis. The result of the study reveals three main themes: patient-centered care, competence and cooperation. These themes revealed factors that were helpful in bringing about a good encounter, and factors that made it difficult. Helpful factors where: good cooperation with the police, the possibility to create a secluded and peaceful environment for the patient, adherence to the patient's desire, continuously inform the patient and give the patient an opportunity to talk about what had happened. Factors that made the good encounter difficult was: a stressful environment in the emergency room, nurses feeling the need to distance themselves from the patient and poor cooperation with other professionals. Another find was that the nurses were careful never to judge the patient or the situation the patient was in. The conclusion of the study was that education and specialized clinics are needed to meet the needs of this patient group.

Background: As a nurse it’s unavoidable to not come across death and mourning relatives. Sudden death often means that it has been traumatic. This means that the relatives are in need of advice and support from the nurse. Aim: was to describe how relatives experienced bereavement care from the nurse at sudden death, and how the nurse experienced her own bereavement care in these situations. Method: The study carried out as a general literature review and is based on scientific articles. Result: The result showed that relatives to a person who have died suddenly, wishes to get information concerning the whole event and how to move on after the death. The nurses are eager to satisfy these needs. Relatives experienced the support from the nurse as important and the nurse shared this opinion. Most nurses felt that they did not have the education needed to satisfy the relative’s needs. Discussion: A central concept in patient-nurse domain is reciprocity. This means that the nurse should be able to feel empathy for the relatives and the situation they are in. Conclusion: The nurses need more education in the area to meet the relative’s needs in relation with a person’s sudden death.

I tredje huvudkategorin känslor framkommer känslornas betydelse i bemötandet.

Patients Board, which is the body that handles complaints frompatients and relatives, said that each year, approximately 4000 notifications in whichpatients and families have felt insulted or badly treated in health care. Objective: Theaim was to describe how adult relatives are experiencing the hospitality of the nurse inacute illness in somatic care. Methods: This work was written as a general literaturestudy, by method of qualitative manifest content analysis. Results: Relatives'experiences of nurses' attitudes could be divided into three different categories:security-insecurity, to be seen and confirmed and nurses exercise of power. In the safeand confirmatory hospitality experienced relatives feelings of security and greatness, this gave them the ability to create an action plan for the future. When the nurse insteadexercised their position of power experienced relatives feelings of powerlessness andbeing in a position of dependence. This meant that families got stuck in feelings of guiltand could not get on.

Full textIntroduction: The responsibility of the nurse is to have competence and to treat every patient with respect and empathy. Patients with substance use disorders are a group that can be viewed as a group with a large demand of care. They are exposed to stigmatization and therefor they need specialized care. The meaning of patient centered care is to strive to optimize every individual’s well-being. Nurses may increase patient’s empowerment through a motivating approach. Aim: To explore patients’ perceptions of the nurse-patient relation of patients with substance use disorder. Method: A literature review, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Result: Three categories were identified: To see the whole person, caring encounter and stigma. Both positive and negative aspects of every category were discovered. Discussion: A patient centered approach can be understood as an emphatic, caring, committed and helpful encounter. Many patients had experiences of discrimination and stigma during care. This could partly be understood as an unbalanced power-control relationship between caregiver and patient. Conclusion: The nurses actions can increase as well as decrease patients suffering. A caring encounter is important to promote health and to optimize the results of care. There is room for development of nursing skills in care of patients with substance use disorders.

Full textBackground: Giving a good reception is something a nurse should be able to do, even in situations that may be considered difficult, to avoid unnecessary risk for patient care. Patients with substance abuse more often have to seek care related to their substance abuse and in this care they are received by nurses. The difficulties nurses have with receiving patients with substance abuse can contribute to less trust between the nurse and patient which can lead to lower quality in the care. Aim: The aim of this study was to compile the factors which could affect nurse’s reception of patients with substance abuse. Method: This literature study include ten scientific studies of quantitative approach from the databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. The quality of the studies was reviewed by a modified version of the review protocol by Willman et al (2011) and analysed by Fribergs (2011) three steps. Results: From the results four theme emerged: Attitudes with the subtopics Stereotypical attitudes and Nurse’s confidence, Nurse’s basic, in service and supplementary training, Nurse’s experience with the subtopics Experience within the profession and Experience with substance abuse and the fourth theme Role support. These four theme and subtopics had an effect on nurse’s reception. Conclusion: Four different factors emerged, attitudes, education, experience and role support, which could affect nurse’s reception of patients with substance abuse. These could affect the reception either positively or negatively.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate the nursing communication with patients at a preoperative meeting before elective surgery. At a surgical reception on a hospital in the south of Sweden 13 observations was performed and analysed inspired by content analysis. The method was a structured interview with parents of six children consulting a children’s emergency department in southern Sweden. Content analysis was used as a method to analyze the data. The results showed that an empathic response and a non-distanced attitude were what parents felt significant regarding the nurse’s treatment. Empathic response concerned taking one serious, listen and show commitment while the distanced attitude was about being unengaged, to act superior and stressed. The most important finding was found to be the perception of vulnerability in relation to the power of the nurse in terms of admitting the child or sending them home. Full textAn increasing number of people are seeking the healthcare system for emergency care. They will all come in contact with a nurse. For the patient, the meeting is not planned nor prepared. The nurse should be aware of how her response and professionalism can effect the meeting with the patient. This can give the patient optimal conditions to feel safe and effect how the continued care will be experienced. The aim of this study, was to analyze the adult patient's' experi ence of the nurse’s communication and caring in the emergency situation. The method used was a literature study which was based on 11 scientific articles that were analyzed and compiled. The results showed that patients have different experience of the nur se’s communication and caring. Common and recurring themes were expectations, information and communication, waiting times and participation. In person-centered care, nurses will transfer their approach from what someone are to who someone is, which will meet the needs that are to be described in the study. Further research is needed to say how, in practice, nurses should be able to meet these patient needs.
