Lek har länge varit, och är fortfarande, en central aspekt i fritidshemmets verksamhet. Barns lekande framstår i sammanhanget som något oantastligt och som otacksamt att kritisera. Med en diskursanalytisk ansats belyser artikeln hur talet om lek i utbildningspolitiska styr- och policydokument legitimerar en viss skildring av samtidens fritidshem och undersöker hur forskning om fritidshem använder begreppet lek. Analysen belyser hur det vetenskapliga talet om lek på ett alltför oproblematiserat sätt reproducerar begreppsanvändningen som har påvisats i fritidshemmens verksamhet genom tidigare empiriska studier. I denna reproduktion används tal om lek för att iscensätta olika element i fritidshemsverksamhet på sätt som passar såväl traditionella fritidshemsideal som rådande utbildningspolitiska idéer. Framträdande i detta är den allsidiga funktion i talet om lek som används för att legitimera andra företeelser, exempelvis lärande och professionalism. Det tacksamma begreppet lek möjliggör därigenom vetenskapliga skildringar av fritidshemmet som den institution utbildningspolitiska intressen efterfrågar idag. Tal om lek – en diskursiv universallösning användbar till det mesta.

This article focuses on the portrayal of reindeer Sami in the Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen's early book <em>Lapland</em> from 1907, a work that has received relatively little attention in Rasmussen scholarship. His characterizations of the Sami reflect conventional, paternalistic ideas of race and culture at the turn of the century as well as romantic-sentimental conceptions of indigenous peoples as noble savages. Rasmussen is a lively storyteller, however, and the immediacy and vividness of his depictions simultaneously open up for perspectives that, at least partly, serve to undermine traditional stereotypes. If read closely, Rasmussen's narrative evinces clear tensions between its conventional generalizations about the reindeer Sami as an indigenous people and the direct, phenomenological descriptions that are the products of Rasmussen's actual encounter with them. At the same time his instinctive sympathy for the Sami is enlarged by his own, deeply personal yearning for a life style and culture grounded in Northern cold and winter, which he encountered growing up in Greenland and which runs like a leitmotif through all his writing.

Holland var i 1600- og 1700-tallet et nordeuropæisk centrum for handelen med varer fra de oversøiske kolonier, og mange jyske købmænd fik varer direkte fra Holland via havnene på den sydvestjyske kyst. Toldregnskaberne fra 1700-tallet er en glimrende kilde til visse aspekter af denne handel, mens andre spørgsmål lades åbne. Her kan man i stedet hente hjælp i de sjældne personlige beretninger, der findes fra tiden. En af dem er den østjyske købmand Rasmus Toxens optegnelser, som i denne artikel tages som udgangspunkt for en skildring af kontakten mellem den jyske provins og et af verdenshandelens centre.

For the past four years I have been engaged in translating into English and editing published Danish sources for west African history. Having begun with pure translation I soon realized that, were the translations to be clear and, indeed, comprehensible, editing was sine qua non. A translation I made last year of H. C. Monrad Bildrag til en Skildring of Guinea Kysten og dens Indbyggere (Copenhagen, 1822) is finished, but not yet edited. But the main thrust of my work so far has been preparing an edited translation of Paul Erdmann Isert, Reise nach Guinea und den Caribäischen Inseln in Columbien (Copenhagen, 1788).It has been in the course of this work that I have been made aware, both by reading and by personal communication, of the growing interest in new and careful translations of the early sources. In this paper I shall address six aspects of the work: a brief overview of the current situation regarding Danish sources for west African History from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries; a review of the available printed Danish sources and the status of their translation into other languages; a discussion of technical problems; a discussion of some of the traps of translation and interpretation; the early sources' use of earlier sources; the modern sources' use of early sources. It is my intention, here, to present a case showing the need for new and carefully edited translations of the early sources for west African history, and to champion the recognition of this field of endeavor as something far more than “just translation.”

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through a discussion of Dostoevsky’s depiction of the death of the staret in Brothers Karamazov I discuss the olfactory channel of communication in religion with the aim in mind to tease apart the underlying ontology pertaining to different forms of religion. The focus is on impurity related to putrefaction in death. Contrary to the understanding represented by the ironic voice of the narrator in Brothers Karamazov, I explore the view holding the saintly person to undergo an olfactory transformation in death changing into a pleasurable aroma and thereby becoming an indexical token of celestial life. From Brothers Karamazov I proceed to examine notions of divine presence and olfactory tokens in ancient Graeco-Roman culture. I use it as a historical foil to analyse Paul’s total twisting of the motif in 2 Cor 2, 14-17 and 4, 7-12 in which he portrays himself and his Christ-message as an indexical putrefaction of Christ. Thus, the title of my essay: “Paul ain’t dead, he just smells funny.” Finally, I discuss the extent to which such an understanding is encompassed by Philippe Descola’s notion of the analogistic ontology. DANSK RESUMÉ: Jeg fokuserer i artiklen på en form for urenhed, som er knyttet til væmmelsen ved ligstank. I første omgang ser jeg på staretsens død i Brødrene Karamasov. Ad den vej bevæger jeg mig tilbage til græsk-romersk antik og drøfter sammenhængen mellem forestillingen om guddommeligt nærvær og velduft. Diametralt modsat denne opfattelse er Paulus’ skildring af sig selv og sit budskab som en omvandrende ligstank. Det er den aksiale spænding for fuld udluftning. Endelig diskuterer jeg i hvilket omfang, en sådan opfattelse og billedbrug lader sig rumme inden for Philippe Descolas tanke om analogismen som en af fire fundamentalontologier.

Artikeln studerar europeiska, i huvudsak franska, beskrivningar av karibiska papegojor på 1600- och 1700-talen ur ett miljöhistoriskt perspektiv. Genom att studera papegojans natural- och kulturhistoria under tidigmodern tid argumenterar artikeln för att skillnaden mellan kategorierna vild och tam var en viktig distinktion i relation till papegojornas värde och användningssätt som konsumtionsobjekt. Studien erbjuder dessutom möjligheten att utreda om papegojans röst kan höras i de undersökta skildringarna. Papegojans position i gränslandet mellan natur och kultur leder till att en uppdelning i dessa kategorier är komplicerad. Dels skulle papegojan representera den vilda tropiska naturen i kolonierna, dels skulle den vara ett roande sällskapsdjur som anpassade sig efter människans önskemål och krav genom att härma hennes språk. Papegojornas ”naturliga vildhet” omnämns vid flera tillfällen som en oönskad egenskap. Då man tämjde papegojor försökte man få dem att glömma sin vildhet genom att föra bort dem från sina habitat och från sina artfränder, både geografiskt och symboliskt, för att ”socialiseras” in i människornas sfär. Klyftan mellan människor och djur är betydligt smalare i skildringar av papegojor som sällskapsdjur än i framställningar av papegojor i det vilda. Papegojans egenskaper som gjorde den begärlig för människan, dess välsmakande kött, dess iögonenfallande skönhet och dess förmåga att tala människornas språk var en vinnande kombination på konsumtionsmarknaden. Papegojorna själva framstår däremot som förlorare i händelserna kring den europeiska koloniseringen av Karibien och det därpå följande utbytet av arter kontinenterna emellan och den ekologiska imperialismen.

English abstract: An apparent trend in the study of Islam and Muslims during the last decades is the growing interest in religious everyday life and ritual practice. Sometimes Islamic Studies are said to be too focused on politicization, extremism and migration, but contemporary studies to a growing extent also discuss ”lived religion” and ”vernacular religion” with the ambition to identify how individuals and smaller groups practice and understand their religion. These studies have provided important documentation of practices, methodological and theoretical discussions and a more complex view on texts and the uses of texts. But such an interest has a long history. This article presents one of the pioneers in the study of Muslim piety, Elizabeth Fernea, and points to the importance of early ethnography as a resource for the study of contemporary religion. Fernea's two-year stay in a Shiite small-town in Iraq generated fully-fledged descriptions of everyday piety as well as a unique account of a pilgrim tour to Karbala 1957. Its literary style immediately gave Guests of the Sheik a broad range of readers when it was published in 1965, but it took longer before it was established in academic literature. In her book, Fernea describes religious conditions in Iraq in the 1950s and the conflicts between the lives of the clans and the emerging urban middle class. In comparison to the chaos in Iraq since 2003 and the preceding decades of dictatorship, Fernea's study is a narrative from another Iraq. Svensk resumE: En påtaglig trend i studiet av islam och muslimer under de senaste årtiondena har varit ett växande intresse för religiöst vardagsliv och rituell praxis. Islamstudier skylls ibland för att vara alltför fokuserade på politisering, extremism och migration, men samtida studier som inte primärt behandlat dessa frågor har i ökad utsträckning studerat ”lived religion” och ”vernacular religion”. Dessa perspektiv har genererat betydelsefull dokumentation av praxis, metodologiska och teoretiska diskussioner, samt bidragit till en mer komplex syn på text och textbruk. Men intresse för hur människor praktiserar sin religion och lokala tolkningar har en lång historia. Denna artikel presenterar en av pionjärerna för studiet av muslimsk fromhet, Elizabeth Fernea, och pekar på betydelsen av tidigare etnografi som resurs också för religionsvetenskapens samtida studier. Ferneas tvååriga vistelse i en shiamuslimsk småstad i Irak resulterade i skildringar av såväl vardagens fromhet som en unik framställning av en pilgrimsfärd till Karbala 1957. Guests of the Sheik fick från början en bred läsekrets när boken publicerades 1965, men det dröjde innan den fick en självklar plats i den akademiska litteraturen. I jämförelse med det tillstånd av kaos och våld som Irak befinner sig i sedan 2003 och den diktatur som föregick är Ferneas studie ett vittnesmål om ett annat Irak, men som ohjälpligt hör till historien. Spänningarna mellan klanernas traditionella liv och den begynnande framväxten av en utbildad urban medelklass är ett bärande tema i studien liksom de komplicerade relationerna mellan muslimer och kristna.

Et betydelig antall studier har vist at sensasjonspregete skildringer av selvmord i media kan utløse imitasjonsselvmord; dette er ofte omtalt som «Werther-effekten». For å forhindre skadelige medieeffekter, har nasjonale og internasjonale organisasjoner utviklet anbefalinger for omtale av selvmord i mediene for å endre praksis i hvordan selvmord beskrives og for å styrke fokuset på selvmordsforebyggende aspekter. I løpet av det siste tiåret har man fått mer kunnskaper som viser at visse typer medieomtale av selvmord kan ha forebyggende effekt. Særlig medie- saker som beskriver personlige erfaringer med selvmords- tanker og hvordan man kan overvinne og takle vanskelige livssituasjoner, har vist seg å redusere suicidalitet i enkelte grupper. Denne beskyttende effekten har blitt kalt Papageno-effekten. I denne artikkelen gir vi en selektiv oversikt over aktuell litteratur om Werther- og Papagenoeffektene for forskjellige typer medier, og legger særlig vekt på nye kunnskaper om Papageno-effekten generert fra randomisert kontrollerte studier. Vi viser hvordan disse effektene kan utnyttes i selvmordsforebyggende arbeid ved samarbeid med media, og peker på fortsatte mangler i kunnskapene som må fokuseres i fremtidig forskning.

This hilltop locality area is situated in Slesvig or southern Jutland, an area whose history is bound up with the unsettled relationship of the twin duchies of Slesvig and Holsten to the Danish and German states respectively. This complicated history is the reason for the presence of Danish and German minorities in this border region ever since the formation of nation states in the 19th century. Briefly stated, until 1864 Slesvig-Holsten was united under the Danish monarchy. In 1848 a liberation movement arose in the wake of The March Uprising against the Danish absolutist monarchy, and caused the Danish state to cede Slesvig-Holsten to Prussia in 1864. After a referendum in 1920, the present border between Denmark and Germany was established and from then on Knivsberg became a locality in Denmark. In the period after 1864, the “Turn”-Movement played an active role in establishing German ideology in Slesvig where Danish culture was strongest. The article examines the Pro-German community in northern Slesvig with special references to the Turn-Movement and to the Knivsbjerg Monument. It shows how the emergence of Nazism in Germany was regarded by the minority as a gratifying and natural development of the former victorious German empire, which, of course, included northern Slesvig

”How about a drink together, before the ship sinks?” Fact and Fiction in Erik Pallin’s Kaparkaptenen på Emden The First World War gave rise to a surge of war novels, many of which were aimed at a young audience. These novels can be characterized as adventure stories with boys as their main target group. Swedish author Erik Pallin’s Kaparkaptenen på Emden: Romantiserad skildring från det stora världskriget 1914 (The Privateer Captain of Emden: Romanticized Depiction from the Great World War in 1914) was published in December 1914. It is not only one of the first Swedish youth novels about the war, but also one of the most intriguing as the tension between reality and fiction is particularly strong in Pallin’s novel. It tells the story of the German cruiser Emden whose raids in the Indian Ocean attracted much attention from journalists and authors. The article investigates how Pallin depicted the war for his young readers, focusing on the relationship between fact and fiction. The analysis shows that Pallin, much like the journalists reporting on Emden, transforms Emden’s warfare into heroic adventure tales and portrays Emden’s captain as a charismatic hero who symbolizes the male ideal of the time. The analysis concludes that Kaparkaptenen på Emden to some extent can be considered a “newsreel novel” (Paris), but that Pallin also romanticizes Emden’s warfare to appeal to his young readers. Rather than depicting the atrocities of real-life war, Pallin presents the war as an adventure with idyllic, romantic, and comical elements. The novel’s happy ending, with the war coming to an end, suggests that Pallin wished to take a stance against the war, but it can also be read as a strategy used to appeal to his young audience by offering them a story of hope.

En skildring af gymnastikpædagogen Elli Björksténs perspektiver på og udvikling af idrætten omkring første halvdel af 1900-tallet med særligt fokus på Björksténs gymnastikforms indflydelse på kvinden som køn.Pia Lundquist Wanneberg: Elli Björkstén – an innovator or administer of the gender order?From a gender point of view a reformation of the Swedish Ling gymnastics took place during the beginning of the 20th Century: a division into a female and a male form of physical education. Originator was the Finnish gymnastic teacher Elli Björkstén and her reforming had consequences for the education in Swedish schools. Up until puberty, girls and boys could do gymnastics and sport together as well as do the same things, but after that the boys were guided towards exercises that worked on strength, determination and performance, and girls towards aesthetic exercises, which developed agility, flexibility and grace. From a fairly asexual environment, the dividing lines became more rigid at the time of puberty. What warranted the distinction was the first sight of the pubescent girl, who was physically weak: a weakness that was due to reproduction. Consequently, the physical education of girls and boys revealed important differences. Whilst the girls’ gymnastic lessons gave a lot of scope to rhythmic movements, such as singing- and dancing games, as well as exercises that demanded, for instance, agility, the boys’ lessons comprised, to the same extent, of endurance- and strength training exercises in the form of, for instance, apparatus gymnastics and running. The distinction within sport, however, lessened with the growing physiologisation of the subject. In his studies, Per- Olof Åstrand had shown that pubescent girls were not weaker that pubescent girls were not weaker than the boys. In the gymnastics section, however, this distinction remained until 1980. Girls and boys were still to be raised into two different types: one, supple and graceful and the other, strong with stamina. From a gender point of view, the individualisation of the school system did not entail any change. In school, the pupils were still regarded as two genders, not as people or individuals.

I kølvandet på 20 års borgerkrig i det nordlige Uganda fulgte en bølge af traumer, onde ånder og vold, som fortsat forpester livet og fordrer handling. Brutaliteten og de mange ubegravede lig som krigen efterlod, opleves af mange som årsag til forskellige former for åndelig og social kontaminering. I en biomedicinsk forståelse beskrives forstyrrelserne som Post Traumatisk Stress Syndrom (PTSD), hos de traditionelle behandlere (ajwaki) kaldes fænomenerne cen, og i kirkerne betragtes problemerne som djævlens værk. Der er bred enighed mellem de forskellige tilgange om, at noget er galt, og folk lider herunder, men de varierende begrebsliggørelser af problemerne peger mod forskellige handlemuligheder. Igennem en fyldig skildring af en enkelt case analyserer vi disse problemer og behandlingsformer med begreber om social smitte, kontaminering, og konfigurationer. Vi argumenterer med begrebet konfiguration for, at problemer med traumer og ånder både konstitueres af krigens vold og de forskelligartede, men begrænsede behandlingsmuligheder, som er tilgængelig i det nordlige Uganda i dag.Trauma and spirits after war in Uganda: Configurations of violence and treatmentIn the aftermath of 20 years of civil war in northern Uganda lives in the Acholi-region are still polluted by trauma, evil spirits and violence. The brutality and the many unburied bodies left behind by the war are experienced by many as the reason for a variety of forms of social and spiritual pollution. These maladies are understood as PTSD in biomedical terms, as the spirit possession cen by local, traditional healers and as the work of the devil within the many churches. There is a broader agreement between these different positions that something is wrong and that families and individuals are suffering, but the variety of conceptualizations of the problems point towards different paths of action. In presenting an analysis of these problems and forms of treatment, by applying the concepts of social contagion, contamination and configurations. We argue with the concept of configuration, that problems with trauma and spirits are constituted both by the violence of the war and the various, but limited treatment options that are available in northern Uganda today.
