This thesis details the measurement and simulation of patient skin doses arising from X-ray exposure during interventional cardiology procedures. Interventional cardiology procedures can be long and complex resulting in high skin doses, to the extent that radiation burns may be produced. The plastic, allyl diglycol carbonate (CR-39) is suitable for use as a dosimeter to measure erythemally effective ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The spectral response of CR-39 dosimeter is a maximum at 290 nm, and drops to zero at about 240 and 340 nm. Abstract:
The detailed knowledge of the inner skin temperature behavior is very important to evaluate and manage the aging of large pipes in cooling systems. We describe here a method to obtain this information as a function of outer skin temperature measurements, in space and time. This goal is achieved by mixing fine simulations and numerical methods such as impulse response and data assimilation. Demonstration is done on loads representing extreme transient stratification or thermal shocks. Abstract Film cooling in gas turbine engine designs has shown great benefit over the years. Film cooling flows perturb the boundary layer flow, however, as they emerge from discrete holes. The impact on aerodynamics is experimentally evaluated for both streamwise and lateral film cooling injection. Injection is with a hole length-to-diameter ratio of 2.3 and a 35° angle of inclination. Data for two coolant-to-freestream momentum flux ratios, 0.25 and 1.0, with a high freestream turbulence intensity of 11.3% are given. Comparisons are made to similar cases without coolant injection.
