Abstract:
In order to develop safe and effective topical and transdermal formulations to treat either local skin disorders or for systemic drug delivery, it is first imperative to assess skin permeation using a reliable and comprehensive analysis method. The assessment of drug permeation into/across the skin is traditionally accomplished using Franz diffusion cells with subsequent analysis by conventional chromatographic methods such as HPLC and more recently using advanced imaging techniques. In this context, time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) offers distinctive advantages in map

Epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs) and multiple subsets of dermal dendritic cells (dDCs) make skin a valuable route for vaccination, offering the potential for antigen-sparing immunisation. Drug hypersensitivity reactions are a significant cause of patient morbidity and mortality. They are difficult to predict in the clinic and during the drug development process. This is because mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In fact, recent data using T-cells cloned from hypersensitive human patients have questioned the long-standing hapten concept, which states that a drug must bind irreversibly to protein to initiate a T-cell response.

Guatemalan medicinal plants were collected and screened for the presence of essential oils using steam distillation. Oil was found in 63 species from 24 families and was tested in tube dilution assays for activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Candida albicans. Several essential oils were highly active with 20 instances of oils inhibiting the microbes at an MIC of 0.31 µl/ml. Oils were also tested against cancerous and established cell lines using a 15% (v/v) agar-media which was developed to improve essential oil solubilit

Skin turbidity limits light based medical applications while increasing the risk of epidermal thermal injury. Collagen fibers are responsible for the majority of light scattering within skin. Chemicals, known as clearing agents, reduce tissue light scattering with the potential to increase the efficacy of light based imaging and therapeutic applications. Three hypotheses have been suggested for the clearing mechanism: index of refraction matching between clearing agent and collagen, tissue dehydration, and agent induced collagen structure perturbation. UV radiations are the main etiological factor that contributes to the induction of skin carcinoma. The incidence of skin carcinoma is increasing at an alarming rate both in the Indian and worldwide scenario. Due to the ignorance and socioeconomic conditions, most of the non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) cases are not registered in the national and state cancer registry. Therefore, development of new therapeutics having higher efficacy along with skin regenerative properties is one of the important issues in today’s rapid and progressive world.
