Full textThrough the desire of understanding the Internet better, we focused our attention on the modelling of the way data move in the Internet. Our main goal here was to give ideas on what does a route followed by packets look like.
In most of the simulations, researchers model routes by shortest paths, we try to provide more realistic models to improve simulations accuracy out of concern for keeping it relatively simple.
To achieve this study, we used the data from the Skitter network measurement platform that runs about thirty monitors which probe tens of thousands destinations per day around the world in order to collect routes packets have followed with the path forwarding method. It is the largest known effort of route collection and also a mean to get a realistic topology of the Internet.
With the help of the Skitter data we pointed out lots of global and local routes characteristics and we have designed some algorithms to generate fake routes that fit the properties observed.

Full textThis essay will focus on drug addicts and the world as they see it. The essay is based on intervjues with three men and one woman and participant observation of the three men´s social life in the surroundings of Stockholm. The informants’ opinions and experiences are central as well as the observations made of them during an intensive fieldwork. The study which was of an exploring character has revealed a complex relationship between the informants and society. The concepts of subculture and stigmatization seem equally central in the social life and perception of life of these drug addicts. The intricate relationship between the two needs further study before a model of the interrelationship can be presented. In a final discussion of the results of the study with the informants they confirm that they see themselves both as part of a subculture and stigmatized by society.
The study also includes some ethical reflections on the role of the investigator in relation to informants who are drug addicts.

Full textCell polarity is a fundamental process that controls cell’s functional and physiological specificities. This process relies on membranous compartments differently composed both on proteins and on phosphatidyl-inositols (PIs). Indeed, through their asymmetric localization, polarity proteins, such as the PAR proteins, are essentials to establish and maintain polarity of the cells. During my PhD, I studied the interplay between the polarity proteins and the PIs. Using the Drosophila egg chamber, as a model, I aimed to characterized the upstream events that regulate the PI(4,5)P2 producing kinase (PIP5K), Skittles (SKTL), activity and localization. I also studied the downstream molecular process that link the PI(4,5)P2, SKTL and the PAR proteins in cell polarity. I contributed to the characterization of the importance of PI(4,5)P2, mainly produced by SKTL in maintaining the apical-basal polarity and during the morphogenesis of the follicle cells. The PI(4,5)P2 is ensuring PAR3 and adherens junctions but not PAR1 proper localizations. Next, through a precise quantification method, I showed that SKTL and the PI(4,5)P2, probably via vesicular traffic, were also ensuring PAR3 proper localizations (anterior accumulation and stage 9B posterior exclusion) in the oocyte. PAR3 accumulation also relies on a Dynein mediated transport and the IKKε kinase while its posterior exclusion relies on PAR1 phosphorylation. Finally, I studied SKTL post translational modifications and their relevance on cell polarity. I identified palmitoylation and phosphorylations that are regulated by the kinase PAR1 and the phosphatase PP1. SKTL phosphorylations seem to be related to its role on the vesicular traffic. Altogether these results clarify some mechanisms involving both PIs and PAR proteins in cell polarity maintaining and establishment
