Abstract:
Immortality apparently plays a minor role in the existential and religious self-understanding of modernity. The concept itself seems antiquated and obsolete. In this situation the best way to approach the concept is through the conceptual history of immortality. This is done in three steps: immortality is firstly considered as a theoretical problem, secondly as a practical postulate, and finally as an existential task. It is a further aim of the article to provide some conditions for a philosophically informed and historically saturated reflection on the significance which immortality might still have. Such a reflection is not itself pursued in the article. But a possible direction is pointed out by addressing Kant’s and Blumenberg’s notions of immortality as respectively a practical postulate and a trial of memory.

Abstract:
Abstract The phosphatidylinositol pathway is implicated in the regulation of numerous cellular functions and responses to extracellular signals. An important branching point in the pathway is the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate by the phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase (PIP5K) to generate the second messenger phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bis-phosphate (PIP2). PIP5K and PIP2 have been implicated in signal transduction, cytoskeletal regulation, DNA synthesis, and vesicular trafficking. We have cloned and generated mutations in a Drosophila PIP5K type I (skittles). Our analysis indicates that skittles is required for cell viability, germline development, and the proper structural development of sensory bristles. Surprisingly, we found no evidence for PIP5KI involvement in neural secretion.

Abstract:

Through the desire of understanding the Internet better, we focused our attention on the modelling of the way data move in the Internet. Our main goal here was to give ideas on what does a route followed by packets look like.

In most of the simulations, researchers model routes by shortest paths, we try to provide more realistic models to improve simulations accuracy out of concern for keeping it relatively simple.

To achieve this study, we used the data from the Skitter network measurement platform that runs about thirty monitors which probe tens of thousands destinations per day around the world in order to collect routes packets have followed with the path forwarding method. It is the largest known effort of route collection and also a mean to get a realistic topology of the Internet.

With the help of the Skitter data we pointed out lots of global and local routes characteristics and we have designed some algorithms to generate fake routes that fit the properties observed.

Abstract:

This essay will focus on drug addicts and the world as they see it. The essay is based on intervjues with three men and one woman and participant observation of the three men´s social life in the surroundings of Stockholm. The informants’ opinions and experiences are central as well as the observations made of them during an intensive fieldwork. The study which was of an exploring character has revealed a complex relationship between the informants and society. The concepts of subculture and stigmatization seem equally central in the social life and perception of life of these drug addicts. The intricate relationship between the two needs further study before a model of the interrelationship can be presented. In a final discussion of the results of the study with the informants they confirm that they see themselves both as part of a subculture and stigmatized by society.

The study also includes some ethical reflections on the role of the investigator in relation to informants who are drug addicts.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the importance of the organization Process Kedjan regarding youth’s termination of delinquency and drug abuse. It also aims to examine in which extent the organization helps the youths in different ways than authorities, as well as how the organization can function as a complement to authorities. The thesis is designed as a case study and is based on the perspective of the organization’s members. The study was performed by using qualitative interviews with five boys who have received or still are receiving help from the organization. Three of them are still receiving support and two of them are now working in the organization. They are all in the ages between 18 and 25, and has been active in delinquency and drug abuse in the ages between approximately 12 and 20. The theory of age-graded informal social control by Laub and Sampson was applied in the analysis. In the processing of the empirical material it emerged that Process Kedjan has been of great importance for the youths in their desistance of delinquency and drug abuse. Other factors of significance has been: close relationships, daily routines and activities and a sense of guilt for the harm they have caused other human beings. Another finding in the study was that Process Kedjan has qualities that cannot be found in authorities. These qualities are summarized in four different terms: identification, reliance, accessibility and fellowship. By the result we could find that Process Kedjan is an important complement to the authorities work regarding to prevent relapse in delinquency and drug abuse among youths, but collaboration between the organization and different authorities is required to be able to help a youth. The organization has contributed to a better view on authorities among the youths, they now understand the importance of dealing with for instance social services.

Bäcke, Kristin, and Henrik Hermansson.

Full text
Abstract:

Nygren, Camilla, and Pia Hildingsson.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes a qualitative study of upper-secondary students’ experiences of having dyslexia in the school environment. The purpose was to examine which positive and negative experiences they have had in school and how they experienced the support given. We also wanted to find out how they have felt about being diagnosed with dyslexia and whether/in what way the formal diagnosis changed their situation. We conducted semi structured interviews with seven upper-secondary students with dyslexia, and through interpretative phenomenological analysis came up with three themes. The results show that through time and experience the students learn to understand themselves and their difficulties better, but that they need support in this process. The study also points to the importance of students with dyslexia getting support by teachers who have knowledge of the disability and can offer the right kind of support, but who also see the students as individuals. Lastly, we found that in the students’ experience the best learning situation was offered to them in a smaller context outside the regular classroom setting. We draw three conclusions from our analysis: firstly, that it is important that teachers have a deep knowledge of dyslexia so as to individualize instruction. Secondly, that students need useful information about their disability on more than one occasion, and lastly, that mainstreaming isn’t always the best alternative for the student. We would welcome more research om how students receive information about their dyslexia and more studies on how to best organize special needs education, especially from a student perspective.

Jouette, Julie.

Full text
Abstract:
Cell polarity is a fundamental process that controls cell’s functional and physiological specificities. This process relies on membranous compartments differently composed both on proteins and on phosphatidyl-inositols (PIs). Indeed, through their asymmetric localization, polarity proteins, such as the PAR proteins, are essentials to establish and maintain polarity of the cells. During my PhD, I studied the interplay between the polarity proteins and the PIs. Using the Drosophila egg chamber, as a model, I aimed to characterized the upstream events that regulate the PI(4,5)P2 producing kinase (PIP5K), Skittles (SKTL), activity and localization. I also studied the downstream molecular process that link the PI(4,5)P2, SKTL and the PAR proteins in cell polarity. I contributed to the characterization of the importance of PI(4,5)P2, mainly produced by SKTL in maintaining the apical-basal polarity and during the morphogenesis of the follicle cells. The PI(4,5)P2 is ensuring PAR3 and adherens junctions but not PAR1 proper localizations. Next, through a precise quantification method, I showed that SKTL and the PI(4,5)P2, probably via vesicular traffic, were also ensuring PAR3 proper localizations (anterior accumulation and stage 9B posterior exclusion) in the oocyte. PAR3 accumulation also relies on a Dynein mediated transport and the IKKε kinase while its posterior exclusion relies on PAR1 phosphorylation. Finally, I studied SKTL post translational modifications and their relevance on cell polarity. I identified palmitoylation and phosphorylations that are regulated by the kinase PAR1 and the phosphatase PP1. SKTL phosphorylations seem to be related to its role on the vesicular traffic. Altogether these results clarify some mechanisms involving both PIs and PAR proteins in cell polarity maintaining and establishment

Abstract:
The iced tea and Skittles Trayvon Martin carried home when he was murdered by George Zimmerman in February 2012 in suburban Sanford, Florida, represent an undeniable and terrifying truth: if you happen to be Black, the most basic of activities can get you killed in today’s America. In most cases, the killers walk free. Law enforcement and the legal system muster elaborate rationales, and leaders of the major institutions of the culture look the other way. James Baldwin’s observation is as pertinent today as it was when made in 1962: his countrymen, he recognized soberly, “have destroyed and are destroying hundreds of thousands of lives and do not know and do not want to know it.” In the end, almost no law enforcement is held accountable for the routine killings happening on the streets of America. Particularly for young Black citizens, this fact is a blunt daily reminder that for far too many in power, Black lives do not matter. The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) and its organizations like the Dream Defenders, BYP100, SONG, and others have put healing and restorative justice at the center of their movement work, as this chapter covers. They try to answer: how can the movement build the best possible futures for Black people? Is abolition the best path? What are others? Through both movement and electoral politics, they seek fresh ways to make government bodies accountable to people at the base.

A rattly old Toyota van skitters along the road, passing lonely farms and tiny villages that gather up out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly, domed churches that seem miles from any worshipers, and an occasional solitary babushka by the side of the road selling whatever she’s been able to squeeze from the earth or gather in the woods. There are seven of us riding this highway on this raw morning in October of 2000, crammed into the van and bobbing like buoys to its irregular rhythms—James and me from Boston, our guide Andrei Suknev, his colleague Igor and our driver Kim, all from the city of Ulan-Ude, and two young women who have also signed on with Andrei for a few days—Elisa, from France, and Chanda, from Canada. We’re all eating pine nuts that we bought from one of those women at a wide spot in the road—they’re called orekhi here—and washing them down with lemon soda from a huge plastic bottle. Andrei is showing us how to crack open the nuts’ hard shells with our front teeth and excavate their soft and pungent meat with our tongues. At an austere restaurant in a tiny village that Andrei tells us is called “Noisy Place,” we eat a lunch of rice and some sort of meat, dry bread, and a peculiar variation on borshch, and we pee in an outhouse across the road. We get back in the van and rumble on. We’re heading for a remote national park on Baikal’s eastern shore, but at the moment I’m not quite sure where we’re going. I’d asked Andrei to take us hiking and camping on the lakeshore, to introduce us to local residents, communities, and culture. He’s promised to do that, but he hasn’t provided much beyond the barest details, and none of us has been asking for more.
