Abstract:
Sweden is one of the countries which has signed and endorsed The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child from 1989. According to this convention, all children have the same rights irrespective of sex, race or religion. The convention is in line with Swedish education policy, which for a long time has asserted that schooling must be open to all. The Swedish curriculum stresses that all human beings are of equal value and states, amongst other things, that “education must be suited to the needs and requirements of each pupil”. However, there is reason to strongly question whether Sweden in practice lives up to these ideals and aims. During 2005, the National Agency of Education made inspections of the schools in Malmoe and, in a report from 2006, drew the conclusion that schooling in the city was characterized by large local inequalities with regard to both opportunities and results. One aim of this study is to use the representation of Malmoe´s schools given in the National Agency report to ascertain whether Malmoe is achieving the goal of giving all pupils an equal education; ultimately, I pose the question whether Malmo can live up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Another aim is to develop understanding of the school as a place of normative and regulating practices in relation to a changed and multicontextual childhood. The empirical data for this study is the said report from the National Agency of Education.

Inom ramen för det svenska decentraliserade skolsystemet har ansvaret för att bygga upp, utveckla och bedriva ett systematiskt kvalitetsarbete i första hand varit en fråga för huvudmän och skolor att hantera. I ljuset av en ökad re-centralisering av skolan har uppbyggandet av olika kvalitetssystem för uppföljning och kontroll av skolornas resultat också kommit att utgöra ett viktigt sätt för huvudmannen att styra skolan på. I studien benämns detta i termer av kvalitetsstyrning. I och med Samverkan för bästa skola har dessa gränsdragningar mellan det lokala och det nationella kommit att utmanas. Studien bygger på intervjudata inhämtad på fyra skolor som deltar i Samverkan för bästa skola, från skolförvaltningen i samma kommun samt genom intervju med en representant från Skolverket. Utifrån begreppen löst kopplade system och organisatoriska rutiner studeras vad som karaktäriserar den nationella respektive den kommunala kvalitetsstyrningen samt vad som sker i mötet dem emellan på skolor som genomgår insatser inom ramen för Samverkan för bästa skola, samt med vilka konsekvenser. Resultatet av studien visar bland annat på att idéer och metoder om databaserad skolutveckling utgör viktiga legitimitetsgrunder för såväl den kommunala som den nationella kvalitetsstyrningen. Den nationella kvalitetsstyrningen via Samverkan för bästa skola är dock betydligt mer intensifierad och når längre in i skolornas organisation.

Abstract:
In this article I use current trends in government and childhood research to raise questions concerning the link between the contemporary government of Swedish education and deficiencies in children’s right to equal education. Changes in ideas on political government, including an increased focus on notions of “governance” and “governmentality” can be observed in Swedish education politics, as well as changes in ideas on the position of children in welfare states and on children as citizen-beings and citizen-becomings. Against the background of these developments I conclude that when the government of children and the increasing transgression of the borders of the field of education are discussed we should beware to take into consideration that too much of a focus on the form of education policies is referring the content of these policies to the background. In opposition to this I argue that if we want to come up with well-balanced solutions to the problems facing us in society today, we need both issues of form as well as content on the political agenda. Given current trends, I argue that there is a strong need to discuss notions of freedom, equality and responsibility in relation to the government of children and education.

Abstract:
In this article we examine two different but interconnected problems, which weaken the struggle for and the idea of equal education in the Swedish comprehensive educational system. One of the problems is the increasing segregation of the Swedish comprehensive school. This segregation is characterized socio, cultural and economic difference. In these areas the concentration of children with diverse ethnicity and low income background are high, while in other areas the opposite is true. In this article we focus on the former schools. These schools are characterized as low achieving schools, and schools that are in crisis. The second issue that is intimately connected to the low achieving school that we examine is the disposition and to some extent the composition of the teaching force. We argue that there is a disconnection between the two aspects, and ground the problem in teacher training. We argue that the current teacher education is not constructed to prepare teachers to meet the challenges in multiethnic schools located in socio-economic deprived areas. The article ends with a critical discussion of “low performing school” and the role of teacher education in preparing teachers for schools in segregated areas.

Från och med 2021 är det upp till skolans rektor att avgöra om betyg ska sättas i årskurs 4 eller årskurs 6. Syftet med artikeln är att beskriva hur denna betygsreform kan få konkreta konsekvenser för elever med behov av särskilt stöd i ett skolsystem där det är fritt att välja skola. I artikeln analyseras rektors, speciallärares, lärares och elevers berättelser om en elevs erfarenheter av försöksverksamheten. Eleven blev enligt berättelserna mycket ledsen och bytte skola efter att ha fått sina första betyg. Den narrativa analysen visar att positionen ansvarig för det inträffade konstrueras på kvalitativt olika sätt genom att ansvaret för händelseutvecklingen förläggs på olika parter i och utanför skolan. Analysen fokuserar även på att eleven tillskrivs olika prestationsemotioner i de olika berättelserna. Diskussionen fokuserar på frågan om vem som är ansvarig för elever i behov av stöd och för likvärdigheten i en marknadiserad skola för alla.

The aim of this study was to investigate the parents’ perspectives of children’s transitions from preschool to school (preschool class and recreation centre) in two Swedish municipalities. The aim was also to investigate the importance of transition activities from the parents’ perspectives. In this study, a transition is understood as a mesosystem, a discontinuity and a non-linear process. A questionnaire with close-ended questions in paper form was constructed and distributed to the parents with the help of the heads and teachers. 131 parents, whose children had recently moved from preschool to school, received the questionnaire, while 70 parents answered it. The data was statistically analysed. The results showed that i) the parents, with few exceptions, experienced children’s transitions as safe and well-functioning, ii) about half of the parents felt some concern or concern in conjunction with the children’s transitions, iii) the parents of children in need of extra support and/or extra stimulation and challenges felt some concern or were concerned more often and iv), overall, the parents considered transition activities to be important. The study has relevance for staff working in preschools and schools, heads and teachers in training, researchers and others interested in educational transitions and transition activities.

Skolmästare Bero Andreæ Ekegren var född cirka 1655 i Ormestorp, Häggesleds socken, Kållands härad i Västergötland, och dog därstädes 1719. Han var pedagog i Hova skola, Hova socken i Vadsbo härad, under 1700-talets första decennium. Här redovisas resultatet av en utredning om skolmästarens liv, vilken bland annat belyser detaljer från hans studietid vid Kungliga Akademien i Åbo och tjänstgöring i Hova skola. Artikeln redogör även för Bero Andreæ Ekegrens familj, hans ursprung och anfäder, vilka var hemmahörande i Häggesleds socken.

School on Trial: Interpretation and Use of School History in Contemporary Debate About the Future of Society and School. This article centres on how education and the Swedish School Commission as an historical phenomenon become resources in the discussion on how society and education should be developed. Three authors’ texts on the School Commission are analysed based on narrative history theory, which engages in how history is used to legitimise political change. Education and the School Commission are inscribed in a national narrative of decline. The 1946 Commission is blamed for the perceived problems in present society and education, allegedly having caused a lack of focus on nationalism, morals and knowledge in Sweden. To change society, the message is, education must learn from the historical mistake of the Commission and invest in knowledge and nationalism. The narrative plot is reminiscent of other historical narratives, for example, of heroes (teachers) and villains (Alva Myrdal), who personify structural changes. The historical narrative of education also fits in with contemporary trends of modernism criticism.

Abstract:
The virtue education curriculum ‘e-TAP’ is one of the recent efforts for improving character and virtue education at school in Latvia from preschool till grade nine. The objective of this research was to provide evidence regarding whether this curriculum is appropriate (‘fits’) to the Latvian context, in particular in reference to the Skola-2030 curriculum. Based on fit and feasibility theory, this work addressed the research question: “How does the treatment of virtues of the e-TAP curriculum fit to the treatment of virtues of the new Skola-2030 curriculum?”. The analysis used statistical descriptive frequency analysis of the virtues of each programme and comparative analysis between the two document sets included in each of them, using Excel software. The results show that Skola-2030 programme stresses performance and civic virtues, while the e-TAP programme underlines moral and intellectual virtues. Performance virtues are the most important ones in Skola-2030 (38 %), but account only for 17 % in the e-TAP curriculum. In addition, in Skola-2030 curriculum civic virtues account for 23 %, while in e-TAP they are only 8 %. In the e-TAP curriculum, moral virtues account for half of all the mentions (50 %) and intellectual virtues for 25 %, whereas in Skola-2030 those virtue groups account for 22 % and 18 %, respectively. The high ‘complementarity fit’ of both programmes suggests that the e-TAP curriculum could considerably enrich the Skola-2030 educational offer. Suggestions for e-TAP programme improvement and further research are put forward.

School in the shadow: Private education in Stockholm 1735. During the early eighteenth century, private education was a more significant sector of the educational market than was public education, regarding the number of students and teachers, the presence of female students and teachers, the social background of the students, and the introduction of a more diverse and modern curriculum. Hitherto, little has been known of the actual scope or general conditions of private education, which has been over-shadowed by studies of public education. The article maps private education through the Stockholm Church Consistory’s (Stockholms stads konsistorium) thorough inventory of private teachers in the capital of Sweden during 1734–36, providing information of both suppliers and consumers within the private sector of the educational market, as well as of the practice and functions of private education in early modern time.

Abstract:
The increasing assessments and competition between countries and schools have actualized a focus on how schools handle low achieving children. Different discourses claim their knowledge in order to find the best solution to how the country can compete successively. By using a discourse analytic approach it is possible to scrutinize the process of continuously shaped and reshaped varieties of explanation models and thought systems, constructed to make sense and meaning when teachers are talking about a school for all navigating amongst different discourses striving for hegemony. The analysis model is created with the intention of constituting a tool for the analysis of these processes and linguistic activities. The basic data for analysis includes transcriptions from group conversations with 17 teachers initiated by the reading of official texts where the challenge to educate for plurality is formulated. In an example of analysis it is shown how discourses intertwine in a process where pupils concerned as having attention disorders are discussed related to the construction of an educational setting.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this article is to contribute to a critical discussion about aims and goals of outdoor education in schools. The study examines motives for outdoor education in the national curricula in Sweden from the end of 19th century until today. The study relies on a discourse analysis methodology. Aspects of continuity and change connected to the identified motives are also included in the analyses. The results show that a scientific perspective on encounters with nature has dominated during the last hundred years. In recent years, more instrumental motives are expressed in the curricula, while students’ personal experiences and feelings are less focused.

I detta temanummer uppmärksammar vi begreppet antropocen och diskuterar vilken betydelse antropocen kan ha för hur vi inom pedagogisk forskning tänker och bör tänka kring pedagogik, skola och utbildning. Vi menar attdet är hög tid att sätta den geologiska epoken antropocen i relation till frågeställningar om skola och utbildning inom en svensk kontext. Inom den internationella utbildningsforskningen har flera temanummer om antropocen publicerats under de senaste åren och turen har nu kommit till den svenskautbildningsvetenskapliga forskningen.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to explore teaching within symmetrical and asymmetrical classrooms and how teaching creates meaning for the learners in a multilingual school. The study, described in this article, has a socio-cultural theoretical standpoint with focus on language and literacy teaching. The study has been conducted in Grade 5 in a school with 50% of immigrant learners. The result shows that the discourse in the symmetrical and asymmetrical classrooms is monolingual with no translanguaging except from one classroom where teaching prepare for translanguaging and multilingual use. But the conclusion from the study is a monolingual school discourse in a multilingual context. Syftet med artikeln är att utforska undervisningen i symmetriska och asymmetriska klassrum och den tänkbara betydelsen för eleverna av undervisning i en flerspråkig skola. Studien, som lyfts fram i denna artikel, har en sociokulturell teoretisk utgångspunkt med fokus på språk- och literacyundervisning och har genomförts i årskurs 5 i en skola där mer än 50 % av eleverna har ett annat modersmål än svenska. Resultatet visar att diskurs är enspråkig i symmetriska och asymmetriska klassrum förutom ett klassrum där undervisningen visar en ansats att lyfta in elevernas flerspråkiga kompetens och uppmuntra transspråkande. Slutsatsen är dock att det på den studerade skolan råder en enspråkig diskurs i en flerspråkig kontext.

Each generation has its own significant contribution, Adolf Ferrier (1879–1960) and his contemporaries, prominent personalities have left the influence on teaching-learning process. The issues of individualized learning, how to work with gifted students, how to organize project work are still relevant, so the article pays in-depth attention to these three aspects. The purpose of this article is to update the ideas and tasks of the active school, which gained wide international recognition in the 1920s of XX century. Generations are formed, firstly, by educational beliefs and, secondly, by technologies that influence attitudes, perceptions, as well as collaborative skills and lead to find a suitable form of communication. Understanding of different personality types provides clarity, allows to accept different attitudes, behaviours, helps to improve communication and mutual understanding, provides the opportunity to apply appropriate learning content with the opportunity to express their talents, develop strengths and work on weaknesses. An active school promotes to go deeper, to see the potential of student, setting a specific goal at work, creates a habit of proper work performance, demands the completion of the work started, leading to the result. A retrospective view of history gives impetus to the methods for creative learning content, calling for the unconscious to be made conscious, emphasizing the importance of forming habits.

Raksts iepazīstina lasītājus ar vienu no ķīniešu tradicionālās domas novirzieniem – vārdu skolu (ming jia 名家). Tādas mācības kā, piem., daoisms un konfūcisms, ir plaši pazīstamas, bet vārdu skola ir mazāk zināma. Parasti šīs mācības idejas tiek pētītas filozofijas kontekstā, attiecinot uz loģiku un sofismu. Bet, pēc raksta autores domām, vārdu skolas pārstāvjus var uzskatīt par ķīniešu pirmajiem valodniekiem. Senajā Ķīnā netika izdalīta un atsevišķi pētīta valodniecības nozare un viņi bija pirmie, kuri pievērsās valodnieciskai teikumu un jēdzienu analīzei, diskutējot par jautājumiem, kas saistīti ar teikumu struktūru, vārdu nozīmi un hieroglifu formu. Tādējādi pētījuma mērķis ir atlasīt un detalizēti aplūkot tos vārdu skolas domātāju izteicienus, kuros parādās lingvistiskas iezīmes. Pētījumā izmantota semantiskas un semiotiskas analīzes pieeja, tulkojot izvēlētus oriģināltekstu fragmentus un skaidrojot atsevišķu izteicienu gramatiskās formas un hieroglifiskās rakstības īpatnības. Nepieciešamības gadījumā tiek pievērsta uzmanība arī vārdu un hieroglifu etimoloģijai. Raksts ir sadalīts piecās nodaļās. Vispirms tiek īsi raksturota ķīniešu valodniecības un vārdu skolas vēsturiskā attīstība. Pēc tam seko skolas nosaukuma un galveno domātāju izteicienu lingvistiska analīze. Pēdējā daļā ir dots vārdu skolas filozofijas izvērtējums salīdzinājumā ar citu ķīniešu klasiskās filozofijas pārstāvju idejām. Secinājumi parāda, ka vārdu skolas domātāju disputu pamatmērķis galvenokārt attiecas uz filozofiju un kognitīvo loģiku, tomēr tajos neapzinātā formā atklājas arī valodnieciskie aspekti un analīze. Ķīniešu tradicionālās domas kontekstā šīs idejas nav populāras, jo neatklāj dziļu jēgu un sabiedrībai noderīgu morāli. Tomēr daudzos vārdu skolas domātāju izteicienos vērojamas atsauces uz morfoloģiju, etimoloģiju, semiotiku, semantiku un gramatiku. Šie un citi jēdzieni tajā laikā Ķīnā vēl nepastāv. Tie rodas tikai 19.–20. gs. Rietumu zinātņu ietekmē un ir joprojām aktuāli mūsdienu ķīniešu valodniecības teorijā.

Abstract:
Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur 17 elever i åk 5 vid en kommunal skola i Stockholm upplevde att de påverkades av coronapandemin samt elevernas olika förhållningssätt till pandemin. De semistrukturerade intervjuerna analyserades utifrån en tematisk analys (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Resultaten visade att eleverna upplevde att praktiska restriktionerna som att hålla avstånd, att tvätta händerna och att bära munskydd var besvärande. En oro för familjens och släktens hälsa framkom liksom problem med att besöka den del av släkten som inte bodde i Sverige. En majoritet uttryckte att umgänget med kamrater och med familjen, att delta i skolan och att utöva fritidssysselsättningar var av stor betydelse under pandemin. Vikten av nära relationer och verksamheten i skolan för den existentiella hälsan framkom i samtalen med eleverna.

The aim of this study was to study children’s transitions from preschool to school in two municipalities in Sweden and also activities that were intended to make these transitions effective. A mixed method approach and a multiple-case study design were used. The result showed that children’s transitions from preschool to school differed, that several transition activities were performed, that transition activities were general or extra and also proximal or distal – seen from a child perspective. Several development areas appeared as being particularly important when working towards improvement of preschool-school transitions.

Föräldrars socioekonomiska bakgrund har stor betydelse för hur väl barn tillägnar sig sin skolgång.Ett av skolans uppdrag är att bidra till jämlik utbildning och att utjämna social ojämlikhet.Detta förväntas bland annat ske genom ett samarbete mellan skola och hem. I ett neoinstitutionelltperspektiv kan man betrakta skolor som organisationer som påverkas av normsystem i sinomgivning. På så vis kommer de normer som finns i skolornas upptagningsområde att påverkahur de organiserar sin verksamhet. Föräldrasamverkan är en av många företeelser som kräverden typen av organisering. Den här studien visar att skolor i hög grad påverkas av sin institutionellaomgivning när det handlar om samarbete mellan skola och hem. Det är stora skillnadermellan en utvald norsk och finsk kommun, men också mellan skolor belägna i utsatta områdenoch skolor i mer priviligierade områden. En generell trend mot kundorientering förstärker skillnadernai hur samverkan hanteras, speciellt den norska kontexten.
