Abstract:

This paper investigates discursive structures of spoken language in formal and informal communication settings (almost 62 hours of recorded time) of urban speakers in Austria’s two biggest cities Vienna and Graz and their surroundings. We focus on so-called bipartite “Operator-Skopus-Strukturen” (‘operator-scope-structures’), examining their pragmatic and discourse organising function within specific conversational situations. Our main aim is to offer in-depth analyses of these structures by characterising the mental and communicative status of such utterances. Starting out with a discussion of characteristics of spoken language research, especially by arguing for the replacement of the grammatical concept of sentences with the interactional concept of turn-constructional units, we address the phenomenon of discourse markers and Operator-Skopus-Strukturen in particular. This is followed by the description of our data set and the subsequent analyses and discussion of the selected examples. According to our findings, Operator-Skopus-Strukturen appear in both conversational settings and among all groups of speakers. We demonstrate that all speakers use the structures with the same pragmatic function of giving information to their conversation partner on how to interpret and understand the message behind the utterance. Within this scope, the speaker’s intention can vary depending on the conversation partner, the topic of the conversation or the situation.

AbstractThis paper investigates the use of the German am-superlative in colloquial utterances such as am besten, du gehst jetzt. In a first approximation, this construction can be described as elliptically used am-superlative occurring on the left sentence periphery within an Operator-Skopus-Struktur (Barden/Elstermann/Fiehler 2001). As will be shown in the empirical core part of the study, a qualitative-quantitative analysis, the pattern appears to be characterized by different overlapping and interplaying tendencies in language use (e.g. the selection and frequency of pronouns and sentence mood). The data used for the qualitative-quantitative analysis is taken mainly from a large-scale web corpus (deTenTen13).

Рассмотрены проблемные зоны в управлении мотивацией деятельности научно-педагогических кадров российских вузов с 1990-х гг. до настоящего времени. Выявлены и описаны причины низкой мотивации научно-исследовательской деятельности профессорско-преподавательского состава (ППС) российских вузов. Особое внимание обращено на противоречие между отсутствием бесплатного доступа преподавателей подавляющего большинства российских вузов к информационным ресурсам международных наукометрических баз Skopus, Web of Science и формализованной оценкой результатов их научно-исследовательской деятельности. We consider mistakes in managing the motivation of academic and teaching staff of Russian higher school since 1990s to present day. We reveal and describe the reasons for low motivation of academic and teaching staff as far as scientific research is concerned. Special attention is paid to the contradiction between the absence of free access of teachers in most Russian institutions of higher education to information resources of international scientometrical bases Scopus and Web of Science and the formalized assessment system of scientific research results.

ZusammenfassungIn der theologischen Ethik spielt, ob thematisiert oder nicht, das Verständnis von Person eine entscheidende Rolle. Der Aufsatz versucht anhand eines Lesegesprächs mit der ›Theorie der Gerechtigkeit‹ von John Rawls hierfür Einsichten zu sammeln. Dabei zeigt sich zunächst, dass die klassische Fronstellung zwischen einer Vertragstheorie der Gerechtigkeit und einem theologischen Entwurf bei weitem nicht so starr ist, wie es weithin angenommen wird. Die Spezifika des theologischen Personverständnisses werden gleichwohl in Absetzung von Rawls’ Theorie gewonnen. Dabei geht es zum einen um die sog. Exzentrizität der Person, also darum, dass sie im ihr äußerlichen Christusereignis gegründet ist und zum anderen um die Frage, welche Rolle Gesellschaft und Gemeinschaft bei der Konstitution der Person eigentlich spielen: Während die Vertragstheorie nur Gesellschaft und Individuum kennt, beharrt die Theologie auf einem ekklesiologischen Aspekt. Was eine/r ist, bemisst sich auch daran, dass sie/er am Leib Christi existiert. Mit diesen und anderen Argumenten wird für ein Verständnis von theologischer Ethik geworben, die ihren Skopus weniger in Diskurs, Entscheidung und Verantwortung sieht, sondern die Frage in den Mittelpunkt rückt, was es heißen mag ›im Geist‹ Jesu Christi zu handeln.

AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah kasih yang berpura-pura menurut Rasul Paulus dalam surat Roma 12:9-10. Metode penelitian dalam penulisan skripsi ini adalah metode kualitatif yakni dengan pendekatan studi eksegesis. Metode penafsiran yang dilakukan tentunya dengan menggunakan syarat dan langkah-langkah penafsiran Alkitab, sehingga langkah-langkah yang dipakai penulis adalah sebagai berikut: analisa teks dan kritik teks, perbandingan terjemahan, konteks umum dan konteks khusus, keadaan hidup tafsiran ayat per ayat tafsiran keseluruhan dan skopus. Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to interpret the Gospel of Luke 23: 33-43 in providing a picture of Jesus' Suffering on the cross showing all people of love that does not avenge evil deeds. The love shown above the ferocity of human sin so that humans can repent and believe in Him as the Messiah. Even though He knew that sinful men crucified Him because there was an element of ignorance, but Jesus was willing to accept it in place of the punishment of all people, so that the gospel or the tidings of joy might come true on earth. The inhumane treatment and humiliation that He received from all parties were rewarded with love which was the gift of the salvation of all people. This is the motto for believers to continue to forgive each other, even at the cost of His pride and life. The research method in writing this Scientific work is a qualitative method namely the Exegetical study approach. The interpretation method used is of course by using the following conditions and steps: book recognition, text analysis, textual criticism by comparing the opinions of experts and analyzing them, comparison of translations, general context and special context, Literary Forms, Sitz im Leben, aspects of government and politics, Socio-Economic Aspects, religious aspects, verse-by-verse interpretation, overall and skopus interpretation, Reflections for today's Christians. Based on Jesus' Suffering on the cross Luke 23: 33-43. The conclusion is that the Cross of Christ is a sign of a Christian life where humans have been reconciled by God, and justified with God, therefore, humans have redemption from God. So the warning that we do is our motivation to be more enthusiastic about living this life, moreover the spirit of preaching the love of God in the midst of our lives.

Abstract:

Poems have often been turned into songs, notably as German Lieder. Classical singers use translations of these in several different ways: as cribs for themselves, in printed programmes for their audiences, as singable versions, etc. Since no single target-text is ideal for all of these purposes, the Skopostheorie of Hans J. Vermeer may help translators to match their strategy with the particular skopos (“goal or purpose”) of their translation. The author identifies five specific functions which a song-translation may serve, and proposes a range of five translation strategies intended to match these particular skopoi. A demonstration is given of how these strategies produce different English versions of a few lines from a Baudelaire poem.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the main results of a systematic investigation (Martín 2005), supported by concordance analysis, of the metaphorical expressions found in Reiß-Vermeer (1984) and Holz-Mänttäri (1984), two works that in the 1980s established the theoretical foundations of German functionalism. Based on the cognitive theory of metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, 1999; Lakoff 1987; Johnson 1987; Lakoff 1993), the analysis led to the identification of two conceptual metaphors that played a crucial role in the articulation of German functionalism: the TRANSFER metaphor and the TARGET metaphor. The paper focuses on the main implications of the use of these metaphors and on the contradictions they create. A broadening of the functionalist theoretical framework is then proposed with the goal of overcoming these contradictions.

Sven Birkerts (1951-) is an American essayist. His essay The Strange Days is well received by readers. In the context of globalization, literary translation is an important part of cultural exchanges. The Skopos Theory is the theory that applies the Skopos concept to translation. The core concept of Skopos Theory is that translation strategies and methods are determined by the purpose of translation. In the process of translation, the translator should follow three principles, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. The translation of literary texts coincides with the idea of Skopos Theory. This paper analyzes the advantages of Skopos Theory in the selection of translation strategies for the translation of The Strange Days from the perspective of the principle of skopos, coherence and fidelity.

Abstract:

Today, the transfer of as much information as possible as quickly as possible is becoming the norm, with the accelerating development of the modern world, the social function of translation as an activity is also changing. At this time, the degree of the translation unit adequacy is under challenge. The postulate of the adequacy of translation known to all professionals in the field of translation, according to which every author's message should be translated as close to its meaning as possible and must accentuate its content, is taking a back seat. Skopos theory in 1978 authored by the German linguist and translator H. Vermeer pushed a reconceptualization of translation activity where the goal (skopos) conforming to which a translation piece is made and the function determined by the addressee are focused. The revolutionary idea of this theory lies in the fact that it decrowns the dominance of the source text and emphasizes the role of the translator as the creator of the translation text, giving priority to the skopos that was set to create this translation, and bringing the customer out of the shadow of the translation. The main ideas of this theory as well as the interest that is actively shown in foreign translation studies determine the urgency of this research. This article presents arguments for the foundations of this theory that may be used to reproduce modern functional translation, in particular in the scientific and technical field. The purpose of our investigation is to form specific procedures for translation activities in order to reproduce high-quality narrowly specialized translation from the perspective of the target direction of translation activities according to Skopos theory. A scientific and technical text, in terms of its functional characteristics, is best suited for the Skopos theory adaptation. Based on the study of this theory’s foundations, we tried to create some recommendations for translators that may be of interest for the development of specific procedures for the translation of scientific and technical texts. The methodology of comparing the generally accepted theory of adequacy and Skopos-theory makes it possible to identify those attractive features of the latter that add to the creation of high-quality translation text, which indicates the current direction of this work in the field of the Ukrainian scientific and technical translation studies. The given research includes general logical and general scientific methods such as analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, descriptive and comparative methods to render our own conclusions regarding the analyzed theory. In the course of our research, it became possible to determine the paradigm of the main provisions of Skopos theory, which can guide scientific and technical translators in their activity, and on the basis of these provisions’ study to reproduce certain recommendations for professional translators regarding the translation of scientific and technical texts The overall intention of the paper was not to dictate mandatory rules to be followed by a translator, but rather to explain a new methodological approach and to form some appropriate techniques that can teach specialists in scientific and technical translation to evaluate their work as well as to take responsibility for a final translation product in face of both, the customer of the translation and the audience for which this translation is intended.

With a wide spread of American teleplays in China, teleplay translation has become an urgent task for giving viewers access to teleplay appreciation. Based on Skopos Theory, this thesis carried out a tentative study on teleplay translation according to a case study of American teleplay House of Cards. The Skopos of teleplay is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, the well-translated teleplays which aid viewers to understand the content of teleplay well. In order to translate purposefully and fulfill the Skopos of the teleplay translation, translators have to adopt certain principles respecting the target culture and particular strategies in the process of teleplay translation. This essay discussed the characters and functions of teleplays as well as the detailed information of Skopos Theory.

Abstract:

With the study of Skopos theory, the paper searches for the translation strategies of sports advertisements. Based on the study of language characteristics of sports advertisements, the paper compares the linguistic differences between Chinese and English sports advertisements. This paper briefly discusses some problems of sports advertisement translation. By analyzing the translation strategies adopted by different translators, the paper attempts to find appropriate solutions to problems of translating. These solutions touch on four aspects, including adherence to Skopos theory, respecting foreign cultures, mastering the linguistic features of sports advertisements in English and Chinese, and achieving the function of communication. The paper draws the following conclusions: there are differences and similarities between Chinese and English sports advertisements. Translators can choose different methods to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers with the guidance of Skopos theory. Moreover, the Skopos theory is the best way to assess the quality of translation.

Abstract:

Raksta pamatā ir divu pētījumu dati: par latviešu valodas prasmes līmeni, beidzot vidusskolu, (2018) un par skolēnu attieksmi pret latviešu valodas mācīšanu un mācīšanos (2018–2020). Datu interpretācijā ir izmantota valodas lietpratības teorija (Hulstijn 2015), proti, par to veidojošajiem komponentiem: pamata un augstāko jeb paplašināto valodas kognīciju. Pētījumā izmantotas arī teorētiskās atziņas par argumentēto rakstīšanu un galvenajām pazīmēm, kas liecina par augstā līmenī uzrakstītu darbu. Skolēnu teksti rakstā vairāk ir analizēti no viņu izvēlētā pārspriedumu temata izpratnes aspekta, prasmes argumentēti paust savu viedokli un leksiskās sarežģītības aspekta. Pārspriedums ir skolēnu sniegums, ko viņi latviešu valodā un citos mācību priekšmetos ir apguvuši 12 skolas gadu laikā bilingvālajās mazākumtautību skolās un skolās ar latviešu mācībvalodu. Pētījuma dati rāda, ka bez tradicionālajām interpunkcijas kļūdām (divdabja teicienu un citu savrupinājumu, salikta teikuma daļu atdalīšanas ar komatiem) skolēnu darbos ir vērojams vienveidīgs vārdu krājums, proti, par maz tiek lietoti konkrēti jēdzieni, termini vai retāk sastopami vārdi. Pārspriedumos nav pietiekami precīzi un izvērsti raksturotas parādības, notikumi, cilvēki, un tas ir saistīts gan ar faktu nezināšanu, gan arī ar nepietiekamu vārdu krājumu. Pētījumā par attieksmi pret latviešu valodas mācību procesu atklājas iespējamie iemesli, kas ietekmē skolēnu latviešu valodas apguvi un tās rezultātu. Ne tik motivējošas attieksmes pamatā, kā to atklāj skolēni, ir viņu grūtības saprast skolotāja latviešu valodas gramatikas un citu valodas jautājumu skaidrojumu, nepietiekama valodas funkcionālo aspektu iekļaušana mācību saturā, dažkārt arī līdzvērtīgas komunikācijas (starp skolēnu un skolotāju) trūkums.

Business interpreting requires the interpreter to fully display his subjectivity to ensure the success of interpreting, besides traditional criteria of faithfulness and smoothness. However, the interpreter’s subjectivity has not been fully recognized and studied. After a brief introduction to the two main concepts -- skopos theory and interpreter’s subjectivity, three rules in skopos theory and three important interpreting strategies are discussed with the characteristics of business interpreting. Under the purpose-oriented skopos theory, the strategies mentioned in business interpreting are proved reasonable and effective, and the interpreter’s subjectivity before, during and after interpreting plays a very important role in successful interpreting.

Buškevičiūtė, (2008), F. M. Martin (2009), Ž. Karazijienė ir A. Sabonienė (2009), H. S. Rosen ir T. Gayer (2010), M. Kumar bei J. Woo (2010) ir kiti, tačiau mokslinės literatūros, nagrinėjančios valstybės skolos rodiklių kitimą ir jų įtaką Lietuvos ekonomikai, yra nedaug. Didėjančios išlaidos valstybės skolų aptarnavimui neišvengiamai sukelia didesnį šalies surenkamų pajamų poreikį, kuris tiek gyventojams, tiek verslo subjektams gali pasireikšti mokesčių didinimu ar kitais neigiamais ekonominiais veiksniais. Straipsnio tikslas – nustatyti Lietuvos valstybės skolos rodiklių kitimo tendencijas ir skolos įtaką Lietuvos ekonomikai. Tyrimo metodai: sisteminė mokslinės literatūros analizė, koreliacinė analizė, lyginamoji ir grafinė analizės. Lietuvos valdžios sektoriaus sumokėtų palūkanų apimtys 2006–2012 m. turėjo tendenciją augti. Teigiamai galima vertinti tik 2013 m., kai sumokėtų palūkanų apimtys Lietuvoje sumažėjo 6,1 proc. Didžioji dalis apskaičiuotų valstybės skolos rodiklių – sumokėtos palūkanos, valstybės skolos ir BVP santykis, biudžeto išlaidų santykis ir kt. – per nagrinėjamą laikotarpį išaugo, o valstybės skolos ir BVP santykis padidėjo daugiau nei du kartus. Tačiau paskutiniais nagrinėjamais 2013 m. valstybės skolos rodikliai Lietuvoje turėjo tendenciją mažėti, lyginant su 2012 m. duomenimis. Lietuvos valstybės skolos įtakos ekonomikai tyrimas parodė, jog nustatyta reikšminga koreliacija tarp valstybės skolos ir šalies BVP, tarp nedarbo lygio ir indėlių sumos buvo nustatyta stipri teigiama koreliacija. Tačiau tarp valstybės skolos ir infliacijos statistiškai reikšmingo tiesinio ryšio nebuvo rasta. Suvokiant valstybės skolos svarbą, priimant sprendimus, susijusius su valstybės skolinimusi, reikia atidžiai įvertinti ir tai, kokią įtaką šie sprendimai gali padaryti visos šalies ekonomikai ir gyventojams.

Abstract Advertising is a fast growing industry in modern societies. Multinational companies promote their products to various countries by means of glamorous advertisements in different languages. When a product is marketed to another country, usually the original advertisement is translated with appropriate adaptation to cater to the needs of the new market. The process of advertisement translation often is not only a linguistic transfer, but also a cultural transfer. This paper attempts to discuss the relevance of the culturally-oriented approach to translation studies, and the skopos theory as advocated by Hans J. Vermeer in particular, to the cross-cultural communication of advertisement translation. The advertiser plays the key role of Translation Initiator (TI) in the translating process, by outlining the skopos for the translator to fulfill. The paper concludes that equivalent effect is not always the primary concern of translating of advertisement, and at times cultural transposition or adaptation is inevitable in this type of translating. This is not only legitimate, but also necessary, in the attainment of the skopos. Résumé La publicité est une industrie qui se développe rapidement dans nos sociétés modernes. Les sociétés multinationales font la promotion de leurs produits dans différents pays au moyen d'annonces séduisantes dans différentes langues. Lorsqu'un produit est mis sur le marché d'un autre pays, l'annonce d'origine est traduite en l'adaptant de façon appropriée afin de satisfaire aux besoins du nouveau marché. Le processus de la traduction publicitair en'implique pas seulement un transfert linguistique, mais aussi un transfert culturel. Cet article tente de mettre en évidence le bien-fondé d'une approche orientée culturellement des études de traduction, et la théorie du "skopos" telle qu'elle est préconisée par Hans J. Vermeer pour la communication interculturelle de la traduction publicitaire. L'annonceur joue le rôle-clé de Traducteur Initiateur (TI) dans le processus de traduction, en faisant ressortir le skopos à réaliser par le traducteur. L'article a pour conclusion que l'effet d'équivalence n'est pas toujours le souci essentiel de la traduction publicitaire, et parfois, la transposition culturelle ou l'adaptation est inévitable dans ce type de traduction. Ceci n'est pas seulement légitime, mais aussi nécessaire pour atteindre le skopos.

Faithfulness and equivalence are two issues that gained the attention of many scholars in the translation field. It has always been presumed that a faithful translation is the one that could achieve equivalence at its maximum level. However, one theory of translation, namely, the Skopos theory, suggests that the aim or Skopos of a translation should be the target of a translator. Adopting such a theory, equivalence does not mean sameness; it rather means achieving the least dissimilarness. In relation to this, a translation of the Holy Quran is supposed to target conveying the primary meaning of the source text (ST) and its function rather than unachievably aiming at rendering its stylistic features. This study aims to highlight the problems faced in the translation of some verses of the Holy Quran and how they can be handled from a different theoretical and practical perspective and in regard to the Skopos theory. To this end, six verses ( ayahs) from the Chapter of the Heights and the Chapter of Cattle were purposively selected and analyzed. Frequent problems and loss in translation were found in the translations of Abdel Haleem, Pickthall, Shakir, and Sarwar. This study, guided by the Skopos theory with some modifications, suggests a new perspective in the translation of the Holy Quran. It also provides a more applicable definition of faithfulness in the translation of the Holy Quran.

The paper discusses a number of theoretical and methodological issues which arise when professional simultaneous conference interpreting (SI) is studied in light of the basic tenets of the functionalist theory of translation and interpreting (T&I) proposed by Hans J. Vermeer (skopos theory). Based on a multi-level model of SI as a professional course of action the paper applies such functionalist notions as skopos, target culture, target-textual autonomy, and “coherence” to a case study of a three-day technical conference with professional SI between English and German.In essence, it is argued that, on a general conceptual level, modelling SI in the framework of the general functionalist theory of Vermeer serves to bring into focus the crucial translational issues of situation, text, and culture. On the other hand, applying skopos-theoretical concepts to the study of a corpus of authentic professional SI reveals some limitations of the extent to which the general functionalist notions fit the specific practice of SI.

Šio straipsnio tikslas – parengus valstybės skolos valdymo vertinimo modelį, išanalizuoti ir įvertinti Lietuvos valstybės skolos valdymą. Tyrimo metodai: teorinių tyrimų logiką sudaro mokslinės literatūros valstybės skolos valdymo vertinimo kriterijų, rodiklių ir metodų klausimais susisteminimas vertinimo kriterijų ir rodiklių analizė ir sintezė. Empiriniam tyrimui naudota Finansų ministerijos ir Lietuvos statistikos departamento informacija. Pagal parengtą valstybės skolos valdymo vertinimo modelį išanalizuota skolos struktūra ir rodiklių atitiktis nustatytiems limitams, įvertinti ir išnagrinėti valstybės skolos augimo tempai, apskaičiuotas tarpgeneracinis skolos moralumo indeksas ir įvertintas Lietuvos valstybės skolos valdymo priimtinumas. Atlikus skaičiavimus nustatyta, kad Lietuvos valstybės skolos valdymas 2010–2015 metų laikotarpiu vertintinas kaip priimtinas valstybės skolos struktūros, rodiklių atitikties ribiniams dydžiams ir valstybės skolos augimo tempų atžvilgiu, bet moraliniu ateities kartoms atžvilgiu skolos valdymas vertintinas kaip amoralus.

AbstractThis paper examines the role of the theme (prothesis or skopos) in Neoplatonic interpretive practice, particularly with respect to Platonic dialogues. The belief that every dialogue has a single skopos and that every aspect of the dialogue can be seen as subserving that skopos is one of the most distinctive of the Neoplatonists’ intepretive principles.1 It is also the one that is most directly responsible for the forced and artificial character of their readings of Plato. The arguments offered in support of this principle are manifestly inadequate to justify the role that it plays. This is so even if we evaluate those arguments by the Neoplatonists’ own lights. If we want to understand how this practice seemed rational to them, we need to consider more than their texts and Plato’s. We need to consider the role that the shared act of reading a Platonic dialogue with the teacher had in transforming the souls of the students and in the self-understanding of Neoplatonic teachers. I. Hadot, among others, has argued that the continuous commentary was a kind of spiritual exercise.2 I largely agree with her conclusion, though I believe her analysis of the sense in which these were spiritual exercises needs to be deepened. I argue that the justification for the assumption that each dialogue has a single skopos is best understood by reference to the manner in which the practice of commentary functioned within the internal economy of their schools considered as textual communities.3

Hitra urbanizacija ima številne negativne vplive na okolje in zdravje ljudi ter pomembno prispeva h globalnemu segrevanju. Eden izmed teh vplivov so tudi mestni to- plotni otoki, ki jih povzroča človekova dejavnost in so opredeljeni kot temperaturne razlike med mestnimi in okoliškimi območji. Zaradi hitre urbanizacije v zadn- jih desetletjih se Skopje spoprijema z izjemno močnimi učinki mestnih toplotnih otokov. Za proučevanje vloge pozidanih in zelenih površin pri nastanku površinskega mestnega toplotnega otoka je avtorica uporabila satelitske podatke Landsat ETM+, na podlagi katerih je analizi- rala temperaturo tal, in posnetke satelita Planet Scope DOVE visoke ločljivosti, na podlagi katerih je analizirala pozidane in zelene površine. Za geostatistične analize je uporabila 17 naključno izbranih podobmočij v Skopju. Izsledki raziskave kažejo pomembno povezavo med mestnim toplotnim otokom in pozidanimi površinami ter močno povezavo med zelenimi površinami in območji, na katerih ni mestnega toplotnega otoka, kar kaže, da se lahko učinek mestnih toplotnih otokov pomembno zmanjša z dodatnimi zelenimi površinami. Eden izmed pomembnih izsledkov raziskave je, da idealno razmerje med deležem pozidanih in zelenih površin, pri katerem je učinek mestnega toplotnega otoka šibek, v nekaterih primerih pa ga celo ni, znaša 40 : 60. Nadaljnje raziskave bi se morale osredotočati še na druge dejavnike, ki lahko vplivajo na nastanek mestnega toplotnega otoka.

With the Skopos Theory as the theoretical foundation, this study aims at analyzing the specialized translation of electrical engineering texts from the professionals' perspective. To do this, we first conducted a questionnaire survey to collect the information on the professionals' needs and requirements on the translation of English texts in the realm of electrical engineering. Then, we selected an English academic paper published in a prestigious journal in this field and conducted a semi-structured interview on the Chinese translation of this paper with three professionals in this field. Based on the results of both questionnaire and interview, we analyzed the translation of electrical engineering texts from English to Chinese at lexical, syntactic and textual levels with the guidance of Skopos Theory. It is found from the questionnaire survey that electrical engineering professionals in China do have a need for translation of English texts in this field, and they emphasize the accuracy of terms and information integrity of the target text. From the interview, we also find that Skopos Theory has a strong guiding effect on the specialized translation of electrical engineering texts. Under the guidance of this theory, translators can adopt various translation strategies to enhance their translation output and optimize its communicative effect.

As the results indicated, among Schjoldager's translation microstrategies, the translator employed all 12 strategies. This includes direct transfer, calque, direct translation, oblique translation, explicitation, paraphrase, adaptation, addition, condensation, substitution, deletion, and permutation of which explicitation and direct transfer were the most/least used microstrategies. Based on the findings, TT-oriented strategies have been used more than ST-oriented ones. Thus, under the skopos theoretical approach, the translator was successful in translating "Donald Trump’s Executive Orders" and in fulfilling the skopos of the translation. This was because of that translations made by him were easy to understand to all types of TT readers. This study offers some helpful pedagogical implications to translation students and trainees, teachers, and those responsible for teaching students and training translators.

Abstract:

This article proposes a skopos-based analysis of the English translations of the eleventh century Japanese literary work, Genji monogatari (“The Tale of Genji”) as a means of understanding the basis for the translations’ differing receptions among their target audiences. The translations, by Suematsu Kenchō, Arthur Waley, Edward Seidensticker and Royall Tyler, are widely spaced chronologically, being published between 1888–2001, and were each produced with differing audiences and aims, thus making them a useful corpus for this analysis. In addition, all of the translators have written, with varying degrees of explicitness, about their motivations and purposes in conducting their translations. First, through an analysis of the translators’ writings, introductions, and individual circumstances, the article will demonstrate how the skopos for each translation can be determined. Second, through an analysis and comparison of text excerpts, it will demonstrate how the skopos influenced the translation choices of the individual translators, with material being, for example, omitted, changed in psychological tone, or rendered more explicit, depending upon the individual translator’s overriding purpose in their work. Finally, through an analysis of the reviews of the various translations, it will consider the extent to which each translator was successful in achieving a positive and intended response to his translation in the target audience.
