Abstract:
The reflection-polarization patterns of small freshwater habitats under clear skies can be recorded by video polarimetry in the red, green and blue ranges of the spectrum. In this paper, the simple technique of rotating-analyzer video polarimetry is described and its advantages and disadvantages are discussed. It is shown that the polarization patterns of small water bodies are very variable in the different spectral ranges depending on the illumination conditions. Under clear skies and in the visible range of the spectrum, flat water surfaces reflecting light from the sky are most strongly po

Water is very essential and a major component of all living creatures. Pure water is colourless, tasteless and odourless, but is generally found in impure state. Water found in oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds appear of different colour. Suspended and dissolved particles influence the colour of water. Freshwater bodies sometime appear turquoise (blue-green) and bright sky-blue and catches the attention of people. Turquoise and bright sky-blue appearing freshwater bodies are found in different parts of the world in different set of environmental conditions. For example, glacial-fed lakes also ap

ABSTRACTChlorophyll‐a (chl‐a) is an optically active compound used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass to determine the trophic states of aquatic ecosystems. Blue–sky remote sensing technologies present low‐cost and effective monitoring techniques for water quality on a large scale. This study was aimed at using readily available Landsat multispectral images to assess the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton biomass in Nandoni reservoir, Limpopo Province, and at examining the relationships that exist between the physicochemical variables and chl‐a concentration. Hildebrandt ### Abstract Pre-determining fetal sex is against the random, equal opportunity both conceptus sexes have by nature. Yet, under a wide variety of circumstances, populations shift their birth sex ratio from the expected unity. The prevailing assumption has been that males produce approximately equal numbers of X and Y chromosome bearing spermatozoa in large quantities and that they have no say in this regard. However, males seem to be able to manipulate the sex ratio of their ejaculates

The natural geography of the 50 states varies tremendously, supporting an equally varied suite of wild species—from flocks of tropical birds in southern Florida to caribou migrations across the Alaskan tundra. The geography of risk, too, varies across the nation, reflecting the interaction between natural and human history. Similarly, present-day land and water uses will largely determine the future diversity and condition of the flora and fauna. We can learn much, though, from looking at the current condition of a state’s biota, since this both reflects the past and helps illuminate the futur
