Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present the eddington bias corrected specific star formation rate function (sSFRF) at different stellar mass scales from a sub-sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release DR7 (SDSS), which is considered complete both in terms of stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR). The above enable us to study qualitatively and quantitatively quenching, the distribution of passive/star-forming galaxies and perform comparisons with the predictions from state-of-the-art cosmological models, within the same M⋆ and SFR limits. We find that at the low-mass end (${M_{\star }} = 10^{9.5}\!-\!10^{10} \, {\rm M_{\odot }}$) the sSFRF is mostly dominated by star-forming objects. However, moving to the two more massive bins (${M_{\star }} = 10^{10}\!-\!10^{10.5} \, {\rm M_{\odot }}$ and ${M_{\star }} = 10^{10.5}\!-\!10^{11} \, {\rm M_{\odot }}$) a bi-modality with two peaks emerges. One peak represents the star-forming population, while the other describes a rising passive population. The bi-modal form of the sSFRFs is not reproduced by a range of cosmological simulations (e.g. Illustris, EAGLE, Mufasa, and IllustrisTNG) which instead generate mostly the star-forming population, while a bi-modality emerges in others (e.g. L-Galaxies, Shark, and Simba). Our findings reflect the need for the employed quenching schemes in state-of-the-art models to be reconsidered, involving prescriptions that allow ‘quenched galaxies’ to retain a small level of SF activity (sSFR = ${\rm 10^{-11} \, }$–${\rm 10^{-12} \, {\rm yr^{-1}}}$) and generate an adequate passive population/bi-modality even at intermediate masses (${M_{\star }} = 10^{10}\!-\!10^{10.5} \, {\rm M_{\odot }}$).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We use spectral stacking to measure the contribution of galaxies of different masses and in different hierarchies to the cosmic atomic hydrogen (H i) mass density in the local Universe. Our sample includes 1793 galaxies at z < 0.11 observed with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, for which Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy and hierarchy information are also available. We find a cosmic H i mass density of $\Omega _{\rm H\, \small {I} } = (3.99 \pm 0.54)\times 10^{-4} \, h_{70}^{-1}$ at 〈 z〉 = 0.065. For the central and satellite galaxies, we obtain $\Omega _{\rm H\, {\small {I}}}$ of $(3.51 \pm 0.49)\times 10^{-4} \, h_{70}^{-1}$ and $(0.90 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} \, h_{70}^{-1}$, respectively. We show that galaxies above and below stellar masses of ∼109.3 M⊙ contribute in roughly equal measure to the global value of $\Omega _{\rm H\, \small {I} }$. While consistent with estimates based on targeted H i surveys, our results are in tension with previous theoretical work. We show that these differences are, at least partly, due to the empirical recipe used to set the partition between atomic and molecular hydrogen in semi-analytical models. Moreover, comparing our measurements with the cosmological semi-analytic models of galaxy formation Shark and GALFORM reveals gradual stripping of gas via ram pressure works better to fully reproduce the properties of satellite galaxies in our sample than strangulation. Our findings highlight the power of this approach in constraining theoretical models and confirm the non-negligible contribution of massive galaxies to the H i mass budget of the local Universe.

Abstract:
Abstract The Advanced Clear Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) generates clear-sky products, such as SST, clear-sky radiances, and aerosol, from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-like measurements. The ACSPO clear-sky mask (ACSM) identifies clear-sky pixels within the ACSPO products. This paper describes the ACSM structure and compares the performances of ACSM and its predecessor, Clouds from AVHRR Extended Algorithm (CLAVRx). ACSM essentially employs online clear-sky radiative transfer simulations enabled within ACSPO with the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) in conjunction with numerical weather prediction atmospheric [Global Forecast System (GFS)] and SST [Reynolds daily high-resolution blended SST (DSST)] fields. The baseline ACSM tests verify the accuracy of fitting observed brightness temperatures with CRTM, check retrieved SST for consistency with Reynolds SST, and identify ambient cloudiness at the boundaries of cloudy systems. Residual cloud effects are screened out with several tests, adopted from CLAVRx, and with the SST spatial uniformity test designed to minimize misclassification of sharp SST gradients as clouds. Cross-platform and temporal consistencies of retrieved SSTs are maintained by accounting for SST and brightness temperature biases, estimated within ACSPO online and independently from ACSM. The performance of ACSM is characterized in terms of statistics of deviations of retrieved SST from the DSST. ACSM increases the amount of “clear” pixels by 30% to 40% and improves statistics of retrieved SST compared with CLAVRx. ACSM is also shown to be capable of producing satisfactory statistics of SST anomalies if the reference SST field for the exact date of observations is unavailable at the time of processing.

Abstract:

There are at least 500 species of sharks inhabiting the world's oceans and very little is known about the reproductive biology of most of these species. By observing Scyliorhinids, which exhibit oviparous reproductive behaviour, we can further understand the nature of elasmobranch reproductive behaviour, including embryo growth and development. Two Scyliorhinid species endemic to South African waters are investigated here, Poroderma pantherinum, commonly known as the Leopard catshark and Haploblepharus pictus the Dark shyshark. Observations were made both in the field and in the laboratory to ascertain differences in reproductive behaviour. In the field P. pantherinum laid their eggs at an average depth of 15.7 m - ? 28.8 and their preferred choice of substratum, onto which their eggs were singly attached, were seafans. H. pictus, on the other hand, laid their eggs at an average depth of 3.9 m - ? 15.9 and their preferred choice of substratum, onto which they attach their eggs predominantly in pairs, was the seaweed Bifurcariopis capensis.

AbstractWhen the IAU was founded on 9 December 1950, I had just been conceived. We “met” each other only in the 1990s, but I think it is fair to say that the IAU’s seventy years are, in a sense, also my almost seventy years. We both share one aspect of this historical period: the IAU at the macro-level and I at the micro-level. There is no doubt that we are of the same generation.

Abstract:
It is thought that climate change will radically affect societies in the future, leading to radical changes in the structural and spatial mechanisms of cities. Today, most of the World, particularly 10% of the World's population living in settlements below the sea level are expected to be affected by extreme climatic conditions such as sea-level rise, change in ocean currents, destructive weather events and heat waves (IPCC, 2019). As discussed in the literature (see. Hjerpe & Linner, 2009; Foust, 2009), in this study, the most severe effects of climate change are described as a dystopian period. In this direction, the study aims to share and discuss the samples of futurist urban utopia thoughts for the environments such as floating, underwater/sub aqua, underground/subterranean and overhead/aerial (sky, space), which are considered as uninhabitable or difficult to live under normal conditions together with their structural and spatial properties, in order for societies to survive in the dystopia of climate change. In the context of climate change, the futurist urban utopias, which are envisaged for different environments, are analyzed through four variables; technological features, ways of obtaining resources, spatial and urban form conceptions, and their mutual evaluation has been determined as the method to be followed in the study.

Abstract:
Tourism business development perspectives mostly depend on the level of infrastructure. Tourism infrastructure includes a group of industries which provides passive tourism balance. It has its own resources: natural, recreational, production assets - service enterprises, personnel, relations with other sectors of economy, providing accommodation, feeding, recreation, information and transport services for tourists. Tourism infrastructure contributes to the adequate functioning of tourist’s leisure. Despite all efforts to develop tourism in Kyrgyzstan, good results of its development are not yet observed, the share of tourism in GDP still remains very low. Tourism infrastructure is developing very poorly. Today, tourism rests solely on natural beauty, only beach tourism remains developed, in recent years, recreation at ski resorts has become more or less popular. Taking into account all the above, in this article we will try to assess the current state of development of the republic’s tourism infrastructure, identify the main problems inhibiting the development of quality tourist services and identify the main directions for the development of tourism infrastructure in the future. Creating a quality level of tourism infrastructure, in our opinion, is one of the factors for increasing the share of tourism in the GDP of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Emulsified sausages (e.g. frankfurters, mortadella) are well-known and widely consumed meat products. The aim of this experiment was to examine the impact of the substitution of various proportions of fatty tissue (20%, 60% and 100%) with emulsions (with soy protein isolate) of grapeseed and pumpkin seed oil on the chemical composition and sensory characteristics of frankfurters. We determined that the higher share of plant oils in the mixture led to a progressive increase in the moisture and protein contents, whereas the fat content decreased. The type and amount of oil in the batches had a significant impact on sensory evaluation results, with pumpkin seed oil having a more pronounced impact – frankfurters where 100% of the fatty tissue was substituted with pumpkin seed oil emulsion were unacceptable for consumers.

Abstract:
<p>A big commercial and entertainment complex called Meydan One, designed by the American architectural firm AE7, is currently under construction in Dubai, UAE. The complex consists of a big shopping mall surrounded by different towers for offices and hotels, a ski slope, gardens with lagoons, etc.</p><p>The mall has a dominant long and wide corridor called the “canyon” which is crossed by 7 steel footbridges, the subject of this paper. The bridges share aesthetic traits amongst another, as well as with the roof over the canyon, creating a unified whole.</p><p>The paper outlines the mall as the context of the footbridges. Their design and structure are then explained with focus on how a single structural system is adapted to different situations. The paper concludes with describing the sophisticated erection sequence necessitated by the use of steel plates as tensile members.</p>

Abstract:
At their most basic level taxes carry, in the words of Schumpeter ([1918] 1991), “the thunder of history” (p. 101). They say something about the ever-changing structures of social, economic, and political life. Taxes offer a blueprint, in both symbolic and concrete terms, for uncovering the most fundamental arrangements in society – stratification included. The historical retellings captured within these data highlight the politics of taxation in Alabama from 1856 to 1901, including conflicts over whom money is expended upon as well as struggles over who carries their fair share of the tax burden. The selected timeline overlaps with the formation of five of six constitutions adopted in the State of Alabama, including 1861, 1865, 1868, 1875, and 1901. Having these years as the focal point makes for an especially meaningful case study, given how much these constitutional formations made the state a site for much political debate. These data contain 5,121 pages of periodicals from newspapers throughout the state, including: Alabama Sentinel, Alabama State Intelligencer, Alabama State Journal, Athens Herald, Daily Alabama Journal, Daily Confederation, Elyton Herald, Mobile Daily Tribune, Mobile Tribune, Mobile Weekly Tribune, Morning Herald, Nationalist, New Era, Observer, Tuscaloosa Observer, Tuskegee News, Universalist Herald, and Wilcox News and Pacificator. The contemporary relevance of these historical debates manifests in Alabama’s current constitution which was adopted in 1901. This constitution departs from well-established conventions of treating the document as a legal framework that specifies a general role of governance but is firm enough to protect the civil rights and liberties of the population. Instead, it stands more as a legislative document, or procedural straightjacket, that preempts through statutory material what regulatory action is possible by the state. These barriers included a refusal to establish a state board of education and enact a tax structure for local education in addition to debt and tax limitations that constrained government capacity more broadly. Prohibitive features like these are among the reasons that, by 2020, the 1901 Constitution has been amended nearly 1,000 times since its adoption. However, similar procedural barriers have been duplicated across the U.S. since (e.g., California’s Proposition 13 of 1978). Reference: Schumpeter, Joseph.
