Abstract:
AbstractDrawing on witchcraft cases reported in newspapers and coming before Ireland's courts, this article argues that witch belief remained part of Protestant and Catholic popular culture throughout the long nineteenth century. It is shown that witchcraft belief followed patterns established in the late eighteenth century and occasioned accusations that arose from interpersonal tensions rather than sectarian conflict. From this article, a complex picture emerges of the Irish witches and their ‘victims’, who are respectively seen to have fought accusation and bewitchment using legal, magical, physical, and verbal means. In doing so, the contexts are revealed in which witchcraft was linked to other crimes such as assault, slander, theft, and fraud in an era of expansion of courts and policing. This illustrates how Irish people adapted to legal changes while maintaining traditional beliefs, and suggests that witchcraft is an overlooked context in which interpersonal violence was exerted and petty crime committed. Finally, popular and elite cultural divides are explored through the attitudes of the press and legal authorities to witchcraft allegations, and an important point of comparison for studies of witchcraft and magic in modern Europe is established.

Abstract:
In the law of defamation, the jury is “the constitutional tribunal” of fact (J.C.C. Gatley, Libel and Slander, 9th ed. (London 1998), pp. 889-890). The jury’s occupation of this position is usually traced back to Fox’s Libel Act 1792. While confined in terms to criminal trials, the 1792 Act is regarded as declaratory of the common law (see Sir Martin Nourse, “The English Law of Defamation-Is Trial by Jury Still the Best?”, in B.S. Markesinis (ed.), The Clifford Chance Lectures, vol. I, Bridging the Channel (Oxford 1996), ch. 4). One way in which to explain the jury’s role in defamation trials can be found in the ideal of institutional justice. This ideal specifies that institutions should, in order to be legitimate, adequately accommodate the views of those in the society where they operate (G. Cupit, Justice As Fittingness (Oxford 1996), ch. 5). There is, however, reason to regard defamation law’s commitment to institutional justice as qualified. Support for this view can be found in Grobbelaar v. News Group Newspapers Ltd. [2001] 2 All E.R. 437. In Grobbelaar, a unanimous Court of Appeal overturned a jury’s findings of fact on the ground that they were perverse and unreasonable. This decision appears ground-breaking since the Court was unable to point to domestic authorities in which the same step had been taken.

Abstract:
News reporting on conflict situations mainly manipulates discursive and representational strategies in portraying people, actions and events either negatively or positively based on certain prejudiced ideologies. This article examines salient discursive strategies deployed by Nigerian and Cameroonian newspapers to represent socio-political ideologies in their reports on the Bakassi Peninsula border conflict. Data comprise 127 instances of discourse strategies drawn from two Nigerian and two Cameroonian English-medium national newspapers published between August 2006 and August 2010. By integrating insights from van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis, findings reveal that both countries’ reports create polarity of positive in-group and negative out-group ideologies through seven discursive strategies which include slanted headlining, negative labelling, evidentiality, number game, hyperbolism, victimization and depersonalization. The strategies embody ideological prejudices of positive self- and negative other-representations which are rife in both nations’ news reports on the disputed Peninsula.

Abstract:
This bibliography covers articles in jownals and daily newspapers, books, conference papers, and dissertations published in western languages(mainly English) during 1970-92. The attempted coverage of articlespublished in daily newspapers and conference papers, the last to bethought of and difficult to cover, is in itself admirable. However, whilethe limitation of "Through Western Eyes" is suitable for the three introductorychapters, it is not so for the bibliography, as most of the literaturecited is written by non-Muslims. In fact, only roughly one quarter (368)of all works cited (1405) are written by Muslims. This raises a questionabout the objective, although the compilers declare that it seeks to "presentthe Western intelligentsia-scholars, politicians, journalists-withMuslim comment and a bibliographic collection of Western articles thathave tackled the issue of Islamic revival" (p. ii).The book is divided into two parts: three introductory chapters andthe actual bibliography. The first part was written by the compilers individually"to provide substantive analysis as essays that reflect Muslim responsesto the precarious relationship with the West ... [and they] aimat crystallizing the frequently distorted image of political Islam and thelslamic revival" (p. ii).Chapter one, "The Western Pen: A Sword in Disguise?," deals withwestern media bias and the consequent distortion of Islam through a)reproducing photos that appear as covers of such famous magazines asThe Economist and Time and b) using slanted titles (i.e., "The Sword ofIslam" and "Muhammad's Militants: Spreading Islam by the SwordAgain")and special semantics (i.e., "fear," "impose," and "purge" as wellas "fundamentalist network" and "wealthy fundamentalist businessmen")to propagate paranoia about Islam. The chapter highlights, through quotationsfrom various sources, fabricated stories, subjective opinions, andgeneral unfamiliarity with Islam and tends to condemn western authorsand journalists for their role in formulating people's opinions. It concludesthat "Islamic 'fundamentalism' is an all-encompassing term. It is ...

Abstract:
This article studies specifics of Islamic understanding of freedom of expression and significant differences between Islamic and European understanding of that concept. Freedom of expression is recognized in Islam; however, it has significant and deeply-rooted peculiarities. In particular, Islam strictly prohibits imaging Prophet Muhammad, let alone making cartoons of him. For instance, from the perspective of Muslims, imaging Prophet Muhammad as a dog is extremely cynical, since a dog in Islam is an unclean animal inadvisable to contact with. Also, there is long-established perception of humour and its admissibility in Islam. For example, under Islamic law one shall not tell lies or scare another person; one shall not joke with an older person, a teacher, a scientist, a manager, a person who does not understand jokes, an unknown man or woman; a joke shall not be offensive or degrading a man or a family; one shall not joke about prohibited issues, tell dirty stories, disclose intimate details, resort to insults or slander. The article points out that Europeans perceive drawing cartoons of the Prophet as freedom of expression. However, in the eyes of Muslims such cartoons constitute violation of a number of prohibitions existing in Islam and therefore deeply insult their religious and cultural feelings. Such insults may cause religious conflicts with many victims, like the one that happened in the January of 2015 in the office of Charlie Hebdo French satirical weekly newspaper. To prevent similar and even more terrible tragedies in the future and release tension between Europeans and Muslims, primarily in Europe, the article explores the legal framework and conditions for restriction of freedom of expression set out in universal international law, the European Convention on Human Rights and relevant case-law of the ECHR. The set of the general and specific scientific methods of research were used by the authors according to the subject and scope of the study: sociological, statistical, dialectical, formal stylistic, axiological, hermeneutic, systemic, comparative legal method etc.

Abstract:
This study examines the construction of news reportage relating to normative breach. It analyses news stories on major corruption incidents involving embezzlement and the misuse of public funds by government officials in Uganda. The study employs a discourse analysis to explore how corruption is constructed and construed in the print media. It invokes Appraisal Theory to analyse hard news reports recounting corruption occurrences, proceedings or findings of commissions of inquiry into corruption incidents and arrests of suspects, public hearings and court proceedings of suspected corrupt persons across two daily newspapers published in English. The study explicates the nature of linguistic evaluative resources that news writers invoke to map feelings, and to evaluate news actors, processes and phenomena. The analysis reveals that news reporters heavily rely on external texts and voices to recount corruption stories. These sources are couched in legal language (legalese), which in turn impinges on the linguistic resources employed to evaluate news actors. Whereas this rhetorical strategy enables the news report to achieve ‘objectivity’, it appears to protect the journalist against defamation or slander. Appraisal analysis reveals dominant instances of negative inscriptions of the social sanction of propriety, namely overt negative evaluations of non-compliance with the civic responsibilities and state laws. The news reportage exhibits positive attributes of corrupt persons in relation to their material wealth and social capital. Finally, the study also reveals the journalistic stance towards corruption, which is covertly shown via modes of meaning intensification.

Duru, Henry Chigozie. "PRESS COVERAGE OF ETHNIC INTEREST GROUPS IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF SELECTED NATIONAL DAILIES." Nnamdi Azikiwe University Journal of Communication and Media Studies 1, no. 2 (2020). http://dx.doi.org/10.47851/naujocommed.v1i2.87.

Abstract:
Ethnic interest groups constitute influential actors in Nigeria’s sphere of political engagement and public discourse generally. These groups, like other social actors, largely rely on mass media to be seen and heard, and the way media report them tends to shape public perception and engagement with the groups. Therefore, this paper examined press coverage of ethnic interest groups in Nigeria. Situated within the framework of agenda setting and framing theories, the study was designed as a content analysis. Four national dailies –Daily Sun, Vanguard, The Nation and Daily Trust – were purposively selected between May 29, 2015 and May 29, 2017, while 432 editions (108 issues for each paper) were selected. Findings showed that newspapers gave frequent and prominent coverage to ethnic interest groups in Nigeria. Reports on the groups revolved mainly around advocacy and antagonistic communication from the groups. The reports were slanted to favour ethnic groups of the respective owners. The study concluded that the continued visibility enjoyed by ethnicity-related issues in the sphere of public discourse in Nigeria may be partly explained by the frequent and prominent coverage given to them by newspapers, and that newspapers’ slanting of their reports in favour of ethnicity of their owners underscores their role in reinforcing ethnic consciousness and divisiveness in Nigeria as found by several previous studies. The study recommended, among others, more efforts by the press towards objectivity and non-sensationalism in their reportage of ethnicity.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT MEDIA, POLITICS AND SLANTED NEWS COVERAGE DURING THE ELECTION PERIODS &ndash<br>CASE STUDY OF NEWS ON AKP &Ccedil<br>AgLAYAN, Eda M.S. in Media and Cultural Studies Supervisor : Prof. Dr. RaSit KAYA May, 2010, 107 pages This thesis aims to study the attitude of media towards AKP (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi - Justice and Development Party) during the 2002 and 2007 general legislative elections in Turkey. Three national newspapers were selected in the scope of analysis: H&uuml<br>rriyet, Sabah an Yeni Safak in two months period before 2002 General Elections and 2007 General Elections (September, 1- October, 31 2002, June, 1 &ndash<br>July, 21 2007). Media are assumed to have a defining role on the formation of opinions due to the fact that the events of the external world to our immediate experiences is continuously interpreted and disseminated through them. Under these considerations, it is frequently claimed that world of politics is one of the most effected institutions. So, during the election periods campaigns are designed and carried out to direct opinions by means of media. Main question of the thesis is whether national daily newspapers were favorable to AKP, both before 2002 general elections when it was elected as first political party and before 2007 general elections when it was the ruling party. AKP news coverage of the selected newspapers in the defined periods were examined through qualitative content analysis. Selected newspapers&rsquo<br>news slant are revealed by way of reading AKP news critically to determine their dominant tone, gauging how much space they occupied in the newspapers and considering attitudes of the newspapers towards other political parties. Abstract:
This chapter sets out to examine Granma newspaper's representation of the U.S. in its news contents published from March 2010 to December 2018. Based on a content analysis of 989 headlines collected from the tabloid's Internet archives, the chapter answers the following research questions (1) which frames are dominantly used in news headlines related to the United States, (2) how these frames vary with time, and (3) which concepts or terms appear most frequently in the corpus of headlines. The results of the study reveal that Granma newspaper exhibits various forms of anti-Americanism in its issues. It constantly portrays the U.S. as an interventionist/imperialist power that should be blamed for the economic, educational, and housing difficulties in Cuba. The newspaper tends to constantly highlight serious inconsistency between some positive Cuban government declarations about Cuba's relations with the U.S. It equally mostly uses the conflict frame in its coverage of U.S. news events. The chapter thus argues that U.S. news in Granma's columns is constantly slanted according to some psychological biases, two of which include the us vs. them and the capitalists vs. communists. Furthermore, the newspaper constantly uses voices from experts, organizations, or authorities to suggest that lifting the blockade is a matter of utmost urgency that depends entirely on the U.S. Government's decisions.

This chapter shows the decline of Kawaiaha‘o Seminary, a representation of the old alliance between the monarchy and missionaries to promote the education of Hawai‘i’s daughters. The school could not survive without the queen’s personal and financial support in the days of the Provisional Government under Sanford Dole. The Hawaiians show their outrage at its impending closure in primary-source documents. Pope is slandered in the newspapers along with the queen, causing a temporary rift in their personal and professional relationship. Pope takes to the newspapers to support the queen.
