Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article I investigate the internal syntax of Dutch nominal expressions like twee slangen van elk twee meter (two snakes of each two meter). The preposition van separates the quantifier elk from the expression twee slangen to which it is connected interpretatively. From a purely observational view, the quantifier could be said to be floating in the nominal domain. In this article I argue that this floating elk is an instance of so-called ‘binominal each’. So far, discussions of the binominal-each-phenomenon have concentrated on dependencies involving material in the clausal domain. In this article I show that dependencies involving binominal elk are also attested DP-internally. Syntactic issues that will be discussed in the context of the DP-internal binominal-each-phenomenon include: Constituency of the nominal expression, the nature of the DP-internal anaphoric dependency, the various manifestations of the binominal pattern, and word order rearrangements by DP-internal displacement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Arabic language and national slangs are really in danger since they ae starting to fade lately due to the globalization era that we are facing nowadays; Englishhas become the most dominating language in the Middle East since it becomes the lingua franca of education, media and commerce particularly in the gulf region. Unfortunately the misconception of not using national slangs in daily live conversations is very noticeable due to the new western educational systems and media outlets. Preserving national slangs is very crucial and important to protect our language from vanishing by using mobile technology to teach the indigenous people their national slangs and even those who are expatriates who wish to learn a certain national slang through mobile learning. The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a new free educational application called Bahraini slang dictionary based on Bahraini slang only, BSD comes with two languages (Arabic and English) in addition to audio pronunciation.

Abstract:
Abstract. Climate change causes global mean sea level to rise due to thermal expansion of seawater and loss of land ice from mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets. Locally, sea level can strongly deviate from the global mean rise due to changes in wind and ocean currents. In addition, gravitational adjustments redistribute seawater away from shrinking ice masses. However, the land ice contribution to sea level rise (SLR) remains very challenging to model, and comprehensive regional sea level projections, which include appropriate gravitational adjustments, are still a nascent field (Katsman et al., 2011; Slangen et al., 2011). Here, we present an alternative approach to derive regional sea level changes for a range of emission and land ice melt scenarios, combining probabilistic forecasts of a simple climate model (MAGICC6) with the new CMIP5 general circulation models. The contribution from ice sheets varies considerably depending on the assumptions for the ice sheet projections, and thus represents sizeable uncertainties for future sea level rise. However, several consistent and robust patterns emerge from our analysis: at low latitudes, especially in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific, sea level will likely rise more than the global mean (mostly by 10–20%). Around the northeastern Atlantic and the northeastern Pacific coasts, sea level will rise less than the global average or, in some rare cases, even fall. In the northwestern Atlantic, along the American coast, a strong dynamic sea level rise is counteracted by gravitational depression due to Greenland ice melt; whether sea level will be above- or below-average will depend on the relative contribution of these two factors. Our regional sea level projections and the diagnosed uncertainties provide an improved basis for coastal impact analysis and infrastructure planning for adaptation to climate change.

Abstract:
Songs is one of the most popular creations of human language, but linguistic study of this medium is still limited. One popular trend is to study the slangs in songs, but previous studies often used a single song or albums with little data, thus this study aims to explore the word formation of slangs in a pop album known for its numerous slangs in each song, namely the album Heaven & Hell by Ava Max. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data is the lyrics of the 15 songs of the album which were analysed with content analysis to identify the slang word formation processes. Of the total 545 slangs, results found five types of processes: contraction, shortening, blending, clipping and compounding. Contraction is the most dominant type by a huge margin (77%), which is significantly different with the majority of previous studies’ conclusion that clipping is the most dominant type. This study offers a new insight by extending the amount of data. Similar studies in the past have mostly conducted this study on less than 200 data of slangs in a single song or a selection of a few songs in an album, while this study included all 15 songs in an album to obtain more than 500 data and found the pattern of dominant types of slang word formation process to be different than what has been reported over the years.

Slang is vocabulary that is used between people who belong to the same social group and who know each other well. Slang is very informal language. This research mainly discussed about slang in Geek Charming Movie. The purpose of this study is to identify the slangs and to describe the types of slang used in Geek Charming Movie. This study is limited to the main characters in the movie, they are Dylan Schoenfield and Josh Rosen. The writer used descriptive qualitative method by using Bodgan and Biklen J (1992) theory, which consists of four steps: unitization, categorization, explanation, and interpretation. After analizing the data, it is found out that there are three types of slang used by Dylan Schoenfield and Josh Rosen in Geek Charming Movie. The types of slang are public house slang, society slang, slang in public school and university. Those are types of slang according to Eric Partridge (1950). It is important to study slang because the result of this research can be used for further research and help readers to get more knowledge about slang.

Abstract:
The meaning of the term “slang” in English is different from other languages. The main reason for this is the migration of the English-speaking population to other continents (North America, Australia, Asia) from the beginning of the 17th century, the fact that their languages became the dominant language by suppressing local languages, and due to the use of English by representatives of other nations who migrated to these places. Therefore, English is spoken in the Australian, Indian, South African and American varieties. These varieties are also called “slangs” of the English language. Therefore, there is still no single view on the concept of “slang”. In English lexicology, slangs include the most diverse words and word combinations, from jargons to neologisms. In American English, slangs are pronounced more obvious. Especially after American Revolutionary War, English became important in the United States, and now there are those who consider it an independent language. The American English was enriched by a variety of sources and adapted to the use of people who migrated to these areas. The article compares the British and American English at different levels and determines their different points.

Abstract:
Slang is a self-sufficient, subversive, oppositional subset of the English language. It has given a tongue, by no means inarticulate, to the marginal, the criminal and the dispossessed for at least half a millennium. But it is hard to pin down: even the etymology of the word ‘slang’ remains unsubstantiated. Perhaps inevitably it challenges concrete linguistic definition, remaining a source of argument: is it a full scale language or simply a lexis of synonymy. And what exactly constitutes a ‘slang’ word, what qualifies it for inclusion in that lexis? Whatever the ‘truth’ it remains a flourishing and endlessly self-inventive channel of communication. As a slang lexicographer of thirty years’ experience, I have come to ask another question: to what extent does any of this matter? Slang is important, slang dictionaries are important, even slang lexicographers are important. But this need to pin down, to categorise, to set in place: is it vital? Does it not run almost perversely in the face of slang’s own imperatives: to represent without compromise – through its obsessions and its relentlessly negative, cynical take on the world – a side of humanity that some, including myself, see as our most human.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This paper explores narratives about eating the flesh of a dragon or whiteserpent. It is argued that these narratives can be interpreted as examples of initiation. The snake’s association with wisdom is a common motif in Scandinavian folklore, stretching back at least to the Middle Ages. The author argues that folklore accounts of eating a white snake correspond symbolically to initiation. Different texts explain and legitimise how certain persons gain abilities such as wisdom, second sight, and the ability to understand the language of birds or other animals. This motif shows continuity over time and space and does not have to have taken place as an actual ritual for theinterpretation to be valid, particularly as, in the 19th century, such stories legitimised such people’s position in society as ‘cunning folk’.

Abstract:
Even the most cursory browse through any slang dictionary will immediately reveal that rhyming slang is a highly productive category of word-formation in contemporary British and Australian English. However, because of the inextricable difficulty in tracking what is essentially an oral (and often improvisational) phenomenon, dictionaries have typically overlooked rhyming slang items whose use is restricted to specific geographical areas, especially in Ireland and Scotland. Conceived as a sequel and companion piece to a previous study on Scottish rhyming slang by this author (Lillo 2004b), this article examines the way rhyming slang has thrived in Scotland over the past few years, thereby providing interesting insights into its role in the articulation of Scottish identity and its spread and growth around the anglophone world. While Scottish rhyming slang shows largely the same morphological characteristics as other rhyming slangs, its home-grown flavour is apparent in a significant proportion of its repertoire, which serves as a real marker of national identity and pride among Scots. The final section of the article presents a glossary of Scottish rhyming slang made up for the most part of previously unrecorded items collected by the author.

Abstract:
Film translation has become a worldwide field in which subtitlers translate and transfer language and style from one culture into another. Subtitling has always been affected by cultural elements. The purpose of this study was to find out how professional subtitlers differ from fansubbers when dealing with such expressions concerning the strategies that both groups use to subtitle these expressions. To achieve the goals of this study, the researchers identified 120 slang expressions from two American movies, Goodfellas and Training Day, but chose only 30 slang expressions to report on how they were rendered by both groups. Results of the study showed that the professional subtitler and the fansubbers faced many challenges and used varying strategies when subtitling slang expressions. The challenges were related to the presence of some cultural terms and different types of slangs which are unfamiliar to most subtitlers. The most frequent strategies used by the professional subtitler and fansubbers were paraphrase, euphemism, omission, and calque. The study recommends that further studies be conducted on a larger sample of slang expressions in American or British movies and TV series. In addition, the subtitling of these slang expressions can be investigated in other target cultures and languages such as Spanish, Persian, Turkish, Greek, and Kurdish.

Abstract:
In modern times, the processes in the world have affected the field of linguistics as well as all other fields. These processes require a diffferent approach to issues related to the use of specific word groups. Over time, language develops and changes occur at all levels. Taking into consideration that the main function of language is a means of communication between people, all changes should be taken into account to make the function more convenient and more suitable. Some of the processes that take place in the language are directly related to the speech process, and ends with getting the gradual normative status of variants in the speech of native speakers. Native speakers use some expressions that gained and didn’t gain status of norms in their speech. They use specific word groups to make their speech more specific and expressive. These word groups are used by some groups of people for special goals. Slangs are new meaningful words used in different social groups. Slangs are presented as non-literary concept. Slangs are various and colorful according to their tones. Key words: slang, morphem, term, communication, society
