Abstract:
The motivational value of food is lower during satiety compared to fasting. Dynamic changes in motivational value promote food seeking or meal cessation. In obesity this mechanism might be compromised since obese subjects ingest energy beyond homeostatic needs. Thus, lower adaptation of eating behaviour with respect to changes in motivational value might cause food overconsumption in obesity. To test this hypothesis, we implemented a selective satiation procedure to investigate the relationship between obesity and the size of the behavioural devaluation effect in humans. Lean to obese men (mean age 25.9, range 19–30 years; mean BMI 29.1, range 19.2–45.1 kg/m2) were trained on a free operant paradigm and learned to associate cues with the possibility to win different food rewards by pressing a button. After the initial training phase, one of the rewards was devalued by consumption. Response rates for and wanting of the different rewards were measured pre and post devaluation. Behavioural sensitivity to reward devaluation, measured as the magnitude of difference between pre and post responses, was regressed against BMI. Results indicate that (1) higher BMI compared to lower BMI in men led to an attenuated behavioural adjustment to reward devaluation, and (2) the decrease in motivational value was associated with the decrease in response rate between pre and post. Change in explicitly reported motivational value, however, was not affected by BMI. Thus, we conclude that high BMI in men is associated with lower behavioural adaptation with respect to changes in motivational value of food, possibly resulting in automatic overeating patterns that are hard to control in daily life.

Caldognetto, Tommaso. "Control of Electronic Power Converters for Low-Voltage Microgrids." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3424527.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the management of master/slave microgrid architectures, where distributed energy resources (DERs) are interfaced to the grid by means of conventional current-driven power electronics interfaces and the microgrid is interfaced to the mains via a voltage-driven utility interface converter. The so called power-based control is proposed to regulate the contribution to microgrid needs from the energy resources that are available. The control approach ensures an accurate active and reactive power sharing among DERs that takes into account both local (i.e., DER level) and global (i.e., microgrid level) constraints. The described general approach to microgrid control is underpinned by the conservative power theory, which offers a meaningful, robust, and computationally efficient method to manage power quantities referring to different grid nodes.

Tomescu, Bogdan. "On the use of fuzzy logic to control paralleled DC-DC converters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29366.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of the thesis is to introduce a new fuzzy logic control application, develop the associated mathematical theory and prove the concept and its advantages through comparative simulation with existing, classical, methods. A stable fuzzy logic controller for the master-slave current sharing loop of a paralleled DC-DC system is presented that exhibits a considerably improved large signal performance over the presently employed, small signal designed compensators, both in terms of system response and control effort. Because of high system complexity, the present small signal designs are unable to give a good response for large load changes and line transients. Fuzzy logic, by dealing naturally with nonlinearities, offers a superior controller type, for this type of applications. The design uses a PID expert to derive the fuzzy inference rules, and simulation results show a good parameter insensitive transient response over a wide range load-step responses, e.g., from 25% to 75% of the nominal load. Current sharing control is formulated as a tracking problem and stability is ensured through adaptation or supervisory control on a Lyapunov trajectory. The technique benefits also from the heuristic approach to the problem that overcomes the complexity in modeling such systems and, hence, offers a practical engineering tool, amenable to both analog and digital implementations.

Microgrid is a set of distributed generation and energy storage systems that supplies the demand of a group of consumers . The existence of a local control, independently of the main grid, defines a microgrid, which can be connected to or disconnected from the traditional power system working autonomously depending on the physical or economic conditions. This work presents two control methods for paralleling inverters in microgrids, droop control and masterslave control, in order to conduct a comparative study between both control techniques. Firstly, the concepts of distributed generation, microgrid and paralleled inverters are shown. Then, it is presented the theoretical fundamentals and main features of droop control and master-slave control. Finally, a comparison is done between both control techniques to allow define the best control technique. This comparison is done by means of simulations of a microrrede, analyzing its performance in the situations connected to the main grid, in islanding and during the disconnection transient. Also, it is observed the quantities behavior such as the current, the voltage amplitude and frequency and also the power shared among the inverters.

Abstract:
The strong point of the microfluidics is the ability to miniaturize and integrate one or several laboratory functions on the same device, to have a portable and user-friendly instrument. Most applications require accurate measures and control within the microfluidic channels. In this thesis, the optical techniques were adopted to monitor, sensing and control the processes, leading to the research area of optofluidics that are based on the integration of fluidics and optics. To reduce the cost to develop these devices, the 3D Printing technology based on the Poly(dimethyl-siloxane) (PDMS) is proposed. All these aspects were addressed considering the two-phase flow (named slug) generated by the interaction of two immiscible fluids, a very common condition in bio-chemical applications. The methodological aspects were discussed in the first part of the thesis, starting from the extraction of parameters for the flow characterization, to their use for the flows real-time modelling and control schemes development; the second part investigates aspects faced for the realization of micro-optical flow detector by using the 3D Printing technology.

Current Internet has confronted quite a few problems in terms of network mobility, quality, scalability, performance, etc., mainly due to the rapid increase of the number of endusers and various new service demands, requiring new solutions to support future usage scenarios. New Future Internet approaches targeting Information Centric Networking, such as the Entity Title Architecture (ETArch), provide new services and optimizations for these scenarios, using novel mechanisms leveraging the Software Defined Networking (SDN) concept. However, ETArch approach is equivalent to the Best Effort capability of current Internet, which limits achieving reliable communications. In this work, ETArch was evolved with both quality-oriented mobility and resilience functions following the over-provisioning paradigm to achieve advanced network resource allocation integrated with OpenFlow. The resulting framework, called Support of Mobile Sessions with High Transport Network Resource Demand (SMART), allows the network to semantically define the quality requirements of each session to drive network Quality of Service control seeking to keep best Quality of Experience. The SMART evaluation in both data and control plane was carried out using a real testbed of the OFELIA Brazilian island, showing that its quality-oriented network functions allowed supporting bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications with high QoS and QoE over time through a signalling restricted scheme in comparison with the legacy ETArch

Sports are constantly evolving and Sport Shooting is not an exception. This project's objective is to supply shooting ranges, equipped for clay pigeon shooting, with a modernized control and management system. With this goal in mind, we developed the Shooting Sports Control and Management System, which introduces significant improvements when compared with existing commercial solutions. Furthermore, having been fully developed in Portugal, the local users will be better served in terms of technical support and maintenance, avoiding potential long lead times when working with international suppliers. The system aims at being a clear option within its segment. It integrates in a single unit all the functions required to manage a shooting range, including the possibility to control all the peripherals in the field such as: the Referee Command, Trigger Commands, the Results Panel and Machines Release. The brain of the system resides in the Central Unit, featuring a touch-screen and a graphical interface – GUI – developed for this purpose, it centralizes all processes and will allow the control of entire system in a simple and intuitive way. Although this system had its genesis in an academic project, it can be seen as an entry point into a niche market not yet explored in Portugal, thus stimulating entrepreneurship and potentially the creation of new jobs.

Zhu, Ming. "Master-slave force-reflecting resolved motion control of hydraulic mobile machines." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3514.

Full text
Abstract:
Issues concerning the design and implementation of master-slave force-reflecting resolved motion control of hydraulic mobile machines are addressed in this thesis. Network concepts and linear system theory are used to design and analyze general force-reflecting teleoperator systems to achieve high performance while maintaining stability. A new control structure is proposed to achieve "transparency" for teleoperator systems under rate control. A novel approach to stability analysis of the stiffness feedback strategy proposed in previous work is provided which, under certain condition, guarantees global asymptotic stability of the teleoperator system. The system could be either under rate or position control and could be subject to time-delays, nonlinearities or active environments. The closed-form inverse kinematics solutions of an excavator and a feller-buncher, which are four and five degree-of-freedom manipulators respectively, are provided to achieve resolvedmotion of the manipulator's end-effector. Using the UBC magnetically levitated joystick, the master-slave force-reflecting resolved motion control has been successfully implemented on a CAT-215 excavator and a CAT-325 feller-buncher. Machine experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this control strategy in improving productivity and safety of general hydraulic mobile machines.

In recent years, robots have grown vigorously worldwide. In order to enhance the convenience of life, there have been more and more dangerous and laborious tasks gradually replaced by robots. While the type of tasks and the environment becomes more and more complex, the components loaded on robots are also increased. It is more efficient to utilize the characteristics of group robots, like teamwork ability and coordination ability, to decrease the complexity of tasks. Because they are able to share the information with each other, group robots are more advantageous and efficient than individual robots in implementing tasks. Group robots mainly send out the order to each individual robot by central controlling, and then command each robot to complete tasks. Therefore, this study constructed a Master-Slave structure to coordinate the Multi-Robot system with a model of communication and localization, and to carry out route planning. Master-Slave Multi-Robot could automatically communicate with each other in unknown environment of barriers, convey one’s position to others, plan routes to reach the destination, and finally complete the assigned tasks. The model of one master and two slaves was used to do routing in five different environments with barriers. The experimental results showed that the purposed algorithm can reach the goal efficiently.

Abstract In order to enhance the high speed machining capability, realizing the demand to improve the machining precision and high speed, the linear motor becomes the important driving component of the high speed, high-accuracy machine tool. Under the consideration to promote the rigidity of the machine tool, Box-in-Box case organization is the important designer trend. The characteristic of this organization is using bi-linear servo systems to urge a single workbench to produce the single axial motion. But under the fast movements, if there were the movement difference exists between the two driving systems, it would cause the deformation on the machine and deteriorate the machine’s acceleration ability and accuracy. Thus, precision master-slave control becomes the important core technology for this type of machines. This thesis adopts the hybrid variable structure control system (HVSS) to improve the linear motor servo lag and suppress the interference with non-linear outside disturbance to improve the accuracy of linear motor platform. In bi-linear driving systems, the model reference control theory was adopted with Variable Structure control (VSC) method to on-line minimize the movement differences between the two driving systems. In the control method, one driving system is regarded as the reference model and the other driving system is regarded as the following system. The movement and velocity differences between the two systems were instantly and on-line minimized by the designed VSC control law. Furthermore, an internet remote control function was also developed for the control system so that the user can execute the control from internet. The function makes the system is possible to apply to the distributed and remote manufacturing system. Abstract Because overshoot and vibration will easily occur to a machine tool due to high acceleration, the maximum acceleration of a machine tool should be designed under the consideration of driving accuracy. In order to enhance the high-speed machining accuracy, the master-slave control becomes the important core technology for a machine tool having a dual-servo system for single axis drive. Since the common used CNC controller is a closed architecture and calculation of control should be fast enough, a new simple master-slave control was designed. In this study, the hybrid variable structure control system (HVSS) was used to resolve the lag and disturbance problem of a linear motor servo system. For bi-linear driving systems, a new master-slave control method in which one driving system is regarded as a reference system and the other driving system is regarded as a following system. Comparing with the previously proposed control method, experimental verification has shown that the acceleration of the system can be improved and the synchronous movement accuracy was improved to 63 percentages. In addition to a linear motor driven platform, verification experiments were also conducted on the linear motor driven machine tool made by DAHLIH Co. The experimental results show that the parallelism error between the two linear motors is a very important design factor for a dual-servo type machine. Besides, because of response delay, PLC program still can not fully satisfy requirement of the synchronous control. Thus, shortening the execution time of control will be the goal of the future study. Key word: hybrid variable structure control system、master-slave control、driving accuracy

The decoupled master-slave current-sharing control for three-phase bidirectional interleaved DC-DC converter with single current sensor is presented in this thesis. Single-sensor sampling strategy is proposed to obtain all of average inductor currents. In addition, the small-signal transfer functions between three control signals, output voltage and current imbalances are derived by using state-space average method. Based on the theoretical analysis, the voltage regulation loop and both current balancing loops are decoupled. Eventually, all the algorithms are implemented in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip. The simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed single-sensor sampling strategy and current sharing control method.

This thesis aims to explore various operating situations in the microgrid based on the master-slave control and self-healing of microgrid after fault detections. Using artificial bee colony algorithm developed scheduling strategies of the energy storage devices to meet the needs of the local power grid. The microgrid models in this thesis were referred to 380V low voltage microgrids in Institute of Nuclear Energy Research, AEC, EY. Matlab/Simulink simulation software was selected to establish the microgrid models which include the following features. It can simulate the characteristics of output variation power in the DER and a variety of operation modes in microgrids which include grid connected mode, islanding mode and switching from grid connected mode to islanding mode. A lot of operating mode will face many times of grid connected and disconnected operations. The disturbance generated by DER will effectively be reduced by using adjustments of voltage, frequency and phase angle. Furthermore, when the main grid disconnected with a microgrid, the point of common coupling will be detected by using adjusted internal power supply in microgrid to decrease power flow to zero. It will reduce the disturbance caused by disconnection. In addition, when a fault point was detected and automatic recovery and fault isolating was operated, the area affected by the fault can be reduced so non-fault regions can quickly be restored. Thus, self-healing functions can be achieved. The artificial bee colony algorithm was applied to operation scheduling strategies of the energy storage devices. In order to meet several needs of the energy storage devices, establishing many assessment indicators assessed the pros and cons of scheduled algorithms. Finally, experimental results show that storage equipment controlled by the artificial bee colony algorithm can satisfy needs of variety characteristics in microgrids. It can reduce peak loads in critical periods and keep the system reliability.

Abstract:
"Smartphones" have become a necessity in society. Although mobile devices have many benefits, there are also some negative effects on the contrary. This study investigates the impacts of compulsive use, problematic and dependent on "smartphones". In addition, the relationship between compulsory use of "smartphones" and "burnout", such as recovery experiences as a moderating potential of this relationship is analyzed. For this purpose, a sample of 141 working individuals, aged between 20 and 63 years (M @ 30; SD = 10.4) was collected, 46.1% male and 53.9% female, with respondents to a questionnaire participated in this study. The results obtained confirmed that the use of "smartphones" in a compulsive, problematic and dependent way have a significant and amplifying effect on "burnout", with abusive users of the "smartphone" reporting more symptoms of "burnout". Moreover, it has been found that abusive use of smartphones may limit and inhibit the process of retrieving the job requirements. However, recovery experiences as a moderator of the relationship between compulsive, problematic and dependent on "smartphone" use and "burnout" have not been corroborated. These conclusions contribute to a better understanding of the impact of the "smartphone" on the well-being of the workers.

Abstract:
In this paper, we introduce a clean-slate architecture for improving the delivery of data packets in IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh networks. Opposed to the rigid TCP/IP layer architecture which exhibits serious deficiencies in such networks, we propose a unitary layer approach that combines both routing and transport functionalities in a single layer. The new Mesh Transmission Layer (MTL) incorporates cross-interacting routing and transport modules for a reliable data delivery based on the loss probabilities of wireless links. Due to the significant drawbacks of standard TCP over IEEE 802.11, we particularly focus on the transport module, proposing a pure rate-based approach for transmitting data packets according to the current contention in the network. By considering the IEEE 802.11 spatial reuse constraint and employing a novel acknowledgment scheme, the new transport module improves both goodput and fairness in wireless mesh networks. In a comparative performance study, we show that MTL achieves up to 48% more goodput and up to 100% less packet drops than TCP/IP, while maintaining excellent fairness results.

Grant, Hannah Lucy Jane. "The distribution and controls on silver mineralization in the Main Zone of the 2.68 Ga Archean Hackett River Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit, Nunavut, Canada." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/1719.

Full text
Abstract:
The 2.68 Ga Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Hackett River Main Zone (HRMZ) volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit, within the Hackett River Greenstone Belt of the Archean Slave Craton is highly enriched in Ag (and Pb) compared to other VMS deposits of a similar age and type. The mineralization has been sub-divided into five categories based on mineralogy, textures and stratigraphic location: 1) disseminated footwall sulfides, 2) copper-rich stringer sulfides, 3) pyrite-poor sphalerite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite mineralization located at the top of the stringer zone, 4) mineralization in calc-silicate altered units and 5) sphalerite-pyrite massive sulfide mineralization. Using a mass-balance for Ag calculated from electron microprobe analyses, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in type 1 mineralization contain negligible Ag and in type 2, Bi-Ag-(Pb) sulfides, Ag-Bi-Se enriched galena and chalcopyrite are the dominant Ag hosts. Within type 3, freibergite and galena are the main silver hosts. In type 4, Ag is hosted in disseminated electrum and freibergite while freibergite in type 5 hosts 99% of the Ag. Overall, Ag-rich freibergite contains 79.4% of the total Ag, chalcopyrite hosts 6.3% and galena contains 1.8% of the Ag. Trace minerals such as electrum, stephanite, acanthite and Bi-bearing sulfides host the remainder of the Ag (12.5%) and have a restricted spatial distribution. Mineral assemblages have undergone pervasive recrystallization and annealing during amphibolite grade metamorphism with localized redistribution of base and precious metals from metamorphism at a grain scale only. Within freibergite and chalcopyrite, Ag directly substitutes for Cu within the mineral lattice and replaces Pb in galena by coupled substitution with Bi and to a lesser extent, Sb. The principal controls on Ag residence in the HRMZ are temperature and redox conditions (which varies with distance to the hydrothermal vent) and the ratio of Bi and Sb available for coupled substitution with silver within galena. Subsequent deposit-scale zone refining is the principal factor influencing the distribution of Ag. Lower temperatures and more oxidizing conditions favour partitioning of Ag into freibergite and less oxidizing conditions favour galena. At higher temperatures, the most reducing conditions favour incorporation of Ag in Ag-Bi rich galena (plus Se) and Bi-bearing sulfides or Ag-rich chalcopyrite under lesser reducing conditions.

This study explores the causative factors related to the landslide susceptibility in the slate area of central Taiwan. Applying the logistic regression and support vector machines, this study develop the landslide susceptibility models based on the landslide inventory of the 2004 Mindulle typhoon in different spatial scales, including the 20*20M grid, slope unit derived by aspect, and slope unit derived by elevation. According to the AUC values of the ROC curves, the accuracy of the landslide models was summarized; the appropriate scale is suggested and the landslide susceptibility models were established. This study further introduced the different rainfalls estimated by the rain pattern analysis and the general circulation model of TCCIP to the landslide susceptibility models to predict the landslide susceptibility in the future. In this study, considering the regional factors (distance to road and distance to river), geological factors (distance to fault), topographic factors (elevation, slope, aspect, and Ids), vegetation factor (NDVI), and rainfall factor (Id) as control factors, the landslide susceptibility was analyzed in different scales. The results show that, for the 2004 Mindulle typhoon, the AUC values of the logistic regression (LR) or support vector machines (SVM) models are in the range of 80%~90%. However, the performance of SVM is slightly better than LR. The models were then applied for the landslide susceptibility preditions. The models and the results could be used for disaster reduction and prevention, or for the government agencies in suburban management (including land use management, road maintenance, and slope remediation). The analysis results of the landslide susceptibility in of different scales show that the grid unit is the most efficient in mesh preparation, followed by the slope unit derived by elevation, and the slope unit derived by aspect. For the analysis time, however, the grid unit mesh consumes more time in the analyses. In terms of analysis accuracy, the grid unit could be the most accurate, because the smaller the analysis unit the better it can be trained. In the landslide susceptibility map, the results of slope unit can accurately represent the actual terrain, and the results of grid unit possess a trasition trend of landslide susceptibility in the study area. Applying it to disaster prevention, if we used the slope unit to analyze and obtain the landslide susceptibility map, it can better show the hazard level in the whole area, so as to prepare for disaster prevention and mitigation plans. The results of landslide susceptibility analysis in different scales indicate that landslide susceptibility obtained from the study areas of small scale individual watersheds are more conservative than the landslide susceptibility of the large scale area of three watersheds. Taking the Tachia River as an example, the landslide inventory of the Mindulle event in the study area are mainly in the non-slate area, but this study selected the slate formation area of the Tachia Watershed as the research area. The training data is concentrated in the middle reach and located near the faults. The faults of the Tachia watershed are concentrated in the slate area, so the landslide susceptibility in the Tachia slate area, predicted will be overestimated.
