Abstract:
We propose a formalization of standard database management systems using topos theory. In this treatment, all constructions take place within an ambient topos, which thereby serves as the ‘universe of discourse’. A database schema is defined using objects and morphisms in the ambient topos. A database state for a given schema involves not only the ambient topos but also an internal category within the topos. This approach neatly separates the schema from the state data by placing them in distinct category structures. It is shown that database states can either be regarded syntactically as obje

AbstractWe define several equivariant concordance invariants using knot Floer homology. We show that our invariants provide a lower bound for the equivariant slice genus and use this to give a family of strongly invertible slice knots whose equivariant slice genus grows arbitrarily large, answering a question of Boyle and Issa. We also apply our formalism to several seemingly nonequivariant questions. In particular, we show that knot Floer homology can be used to detect exotic pairs of slice disks, recovering an example due to Hayden, and extend a result due to Miller and Powell regarding stab

AbstractManolescu and Piccirillo (2023) recently initiated a program to construct an exotic or by using zero surgery homeomorphisms and Rasmussen's ‐invariant. They find five knots that if any were slice, one could construct an exotic and disprove the Smooth 4‐dimensional Poincaré conjecture. We rule out this exciting possibility and show that these knots are not slice. To do this, we use a zero surgery homeomorphism to relate slice properties of two knots stably after a connected sum with some 4‐manifold. Furthermore, we show that our techniques will extend to the entire infinite family of ze

Computed tomography is the X-ray technique to diagnose diseases and injuries. Tomos = slice; graphine = imaging of an object by analyzing its slices. If one has large breast cancer, then the patient may be ordered to get a CT scan to know the level of spreading of cancer in the chest cavity. This aids in jumping to the conclusion if cancer can be removed with mastectomy. CT scans are also used to examine various other parts of patient’s body where breast cancer can unfurl, such as the lymph nodes, lungs, or spine. If the patient’s symptoms or other findings uncovers that cancer has severely sp

Abstract:
Abstract The fundamental theorem of toposes says that every slice of a topos is also a topos and, for every arrow f: A→ B of E, the functorf:*:E/B→ E/A has a right adjoint 77f and a left adjoint Xf. This makes indexed families of objects and arrows in a topos easy to handle, and it proves a great deal about the structure of a topos. The last two sections of this chapter discuss aspects of Boolean logic in toposes, and show that in toposes the axiom of choice implies the law of excluded middle. Unless otherwise noted, objects and arrows are understood to be those of a fixed topos E.
