Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The slip synchronous-permanent magnet generator (SS-PMG) is a direct-driven, direct-to-grid generator for wind turbine applications. This investigation focuses on achieving automated grid connection and low voltage ride-through for a small-scale SS-PMG. To reduce cost and complexity, components such as blade pitch controllers and frequency converters are avoided. Instead, electromagnetic braking is employed to control turbine speed prior to grid synchronisation and compensation resistances are used to facilitate grid fa

The SS-PMG is connected directly to the grid without the need for a power electronic converter and it can also be connected directly to the turbine without a gearbox. Due to the SS-PMG requiring no gearbox or power electronic converter it is evident that this type of generator have a significant advantage regarding reduced maintenance and operation costs. An innovative approach to possible construction or rehabilitation of bridge decks can be found in a bridge construction system called the Sandwich Plate System (SPS). The technology developed and patented by Intelligent Engineering Canada Limited in conjunction with an industry partner, Elastogran GmbH, a member of BASF, may be an effective alternative to traditional bridge rehabilitation techniques.
Although the systemâ s behavior has been studied the connection of the SPS deck to the supporting girders has not been investigated. Two types of connection are presented in this research.

In Sweden, prefabrication in the construction industry is a very common system. In prefabricated structures, there are various kinds of connections and generally many hinged connections. Therefore, it is of high interest to study the behavior of the prefabricated buildings in relation to the connections. Two main theories that can be used to evaluate our structures are the non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) and the second order effects. These two theories help to study the real behavior of the structures. Software that can apply these two theories is the ATENA-GiD. Therefore, it was ve

Slip-critical connections have been used in steel structures for a long time where bolted joints are subjected to cyclic load and fatigue with slotted or oversized holes. The understanding of these connections has resulted in the limitation of maximum slip coefficients (0.50 for Class B surfaces) with surface preparation. High performance surface coating (HPSC) is one possible new method to significantly enhance the strength of slip-critical connections. Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för byggteknik (BY), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-77339.

Abstract:
Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) has recently become a popular construction material for building timber structures. One advantage of CLT is, that it can be used as floor, beam and wall element. As the arrangements of layers in CLT is in perpendicular direction to each other, it exhibits remarkable strength properties in both in-plane directions. However, the low stiffness and strength properties in compression perpendicular to the grain hinder application of CLT in high rising building, since forces are usually transferred from the wall elements through floor elements perpendicular to the grain.

The slippage models require certain parameters, determined from load deformati

This suppression combined with the enhanced vorticity convection results in a substantial reduction in the unsteady vortex shedding and the hydrodynamic loads experienced by the bluff body.
