Abstract:
Four types of row covers were evaluated on 'Norchip' and 'Atlantis' potatoes at Charleston, Missouri on a Lilbourn sandy loam entisol. Row covers used were spun-bonded polyester, insolar slitted, clear slitted and VisPore. The row covers increased the mean afternoon soil temperature above the ambient afternoon air temperature from 3 to 25°F when potato plants were covered. The number of plants which emerged were significantly different among treatment for the cultivar 'Norchip'. Data for plant height was significantly different between the bare soil control and the row cover treatments. Yield (Kg/HA) were higher with the spunbonded polyester and insolar slitted row covers for both number and weight of grade A (47.6-82.6 mm) potatoes, and results were significantly different.

Abstract:
Five polyethylene rowcover treatments (none, slitted white, slitted clear, chimney, and perforated) were combined factorially with four tomato [Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill)] cultivars (`PikRed', `Jetstar', `Supersonic B', and `Heinz 1810') in a 2-year experiment. Clear or white rowcovers more than doubled early yield in 1986, from 1.2 to 2.9 t·ha-1. This early yield advantage resulted from an advancement of flowering rather than an increase in fruit number or size. In Spring 1987, high temperature caused increased fruit abortion with all rowcovers, resulting in early yield reduction. Flower production on the first two clusters for either year was not reduced by high temperatures and was increased for `Heinz 1810'. Tomatoes under slitted, white covers, the best-yielding treatment in 1987, yielded only 72% of those without rowcovers. Sustained high temperature, ≈ 40C for 3 consecutive hours or more, occurred with all rowcovers and correlated with early yield loss.

Abstract:
Black polyethylene, perforated clear polyethylene, double-slitted clear polyethylene, spunbonded polyester, and a bare soil control were evaluated for their effect on the number, size, and distribution of production of sweet potato transplants. The perforated and double-slitted bed covers increased the weight and number of sweet potato transplants compared with the control or with black polyethylene at the first harvest in 1986 and 1987, Seed roots covered with the spunbonded polyester bed cover produced more plants of greater weight than seed roots covered with bare soil at the first harvest in 1986 only. Black polyethylene treatments produced the greatest weight and number of transplants at the second harvest (8 to 12 days later) in both years. There were no significant differences in total weight and number of transplants among black polyethylene, perforated or double-slitted clear polyethylene treatments in 1986. Total transplant number and weight from plots covered with spunbonded polyester were lower than those from plots with any other bed covers.

Abstract:
Three tomato varieties were evaluated for early and total yield using row covers. Tomatoes were planted three weeks earlier than the normal planting date and row cover treatments included; 1) slitted, clear polyethylene 2) floating, spunbonded, polypropylene and 3) bare, no row cover. `Pilgrim', `Celebrity' and' Mountain Pride' were selected as early, mid-season and late varieties, respectively. Row covers were removed after three weeks at which time a second planting was made, representing the normal planting time. Slitted, clear, polyethylene row covers significantly increased early yields in all varieties as compared to the bare treatment. In addition, clear row covers resulted in higher early yields in `Pilgrim' and `Mountain Pride' than floating row covers. Despite row covers over `Celebrity' and `Mountain Pride', early yields were still not as great as the `Pilgrim' cultivar without any row cover.

Abstract:
In this paper, design and simulation of a High Frequency Slitted Butterfly-shaped Inset Fed Microstrip Patch Antenna is studied. As its name says, butterfly-shaped antenna is introduced with symmetric indentations at the top, bottom and sides. Excitation was used at the bottom point of the antenna with inset and via feeding. An input match (S11) of -34.48 dB at the resonance frequency of 26.35 GHz with an electric field phi-polarized gain of 7.37 dB were obtained. Cross polarization level (electric field theta-polarized) is -20 dB. The 26 GHz band covers the 3.25 GHz of spectrum between 24.25 GHz and 27.5 GHz and is being prioritized across Europe as the first high frequency band for 5G. This high frequency spectrum (known as ‘mmWave spectrum’), offers very high data capacity and speeds but with a limited range.

Abstract:
At Volvo Group Trucks Operations (GTO) in Skövde, cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and flywheels are manufactured through sandcasting. As the forming tools that forms the sand forms are filled with sand, wear occurs where the sand particles hit the tool surface. The forming tool thus needs to be regularly maintained. The aim of this study is to evaluate alternative materials that the forming tools can be manufactured in to reduce wear, and thereby reducing costs by extending maintenance intervals. The problem is analyzed and a literature study on erosive and abrasive wear is carried out. A number of materials are presented as suitable candidates based on the literature study, material charts and discussion. Material samples are tested using a standard method for solid particle erosion using gas jets. Results from previous empirical studies indicate that erosion is strongly influenced by material properties such as hardness and toughness but also the angle of impingement and velocity of the erosive particles. The erosion test is performed at 30 and 90 degree angle of impingement. The test shows that the softer steel, Holdax and Sverker 21 have higher resistance to erosion at low angles of impingement and the harder steel Nimax has higher resistance at high angles of impingement. Nimax is considered a suitable material for the forming tool, as Nimax has the overall lowest erosion rate when adding the total erosion over both angles of impingement. Nimax has the lowest erosion rate at 30 degrees angle and is also considered to have good resistance to erosion at 90 degrees angle. Recommendation is given on repeated erosion tests to validate the results. There are also recommendations regarding material testing in the forming tool to see if a material change would lead to savings. Examination of possibilities to make changes in the sand filling process, altering angle of impingement between the sand blown and the forming tool as well as air pressure is recommended.

Abstract:
Digitalization in the manufacturing industry involves many challenges due to moving from manual controls towards digitalized condition monitoring. The challenges that occur with the new way of working is what data should be collected and how it should be analyzed. This thesis aims to streamline the industry and implement Industry 4.0 and Smart Maintenance through predictive maintenance in Scania. In this way a more cost-effective business is achieved at the same time as it contributes to creating a more sustainable company. The predictive maintenance will lead to a higher availability and reliability within the machine park at Scania´s cylinder head line. To be able to implement the maintenance strategy a software created by FANUC, the system supplier, is used. The software is a measuring tool called Servo Viewer and it can analyze the status of the machine by measuring the percentage of the total amount of torque that is available and the position error while the machine is running. The thesis also aims to investigate how to automatize the measurements within a database called MT-LINKi and later be analyzed by a software called AI Servo Monitor. The conclusion that can be drawn from the thesis is that it is possible to use FANUC Servo Viewer to measure the condition of the machine and therefore being able to predict when the maintenance needs to be performed as it is possible to read deviating factors during the measurements. With these factors it is possible to set triggers that will alarm the system when the machine exceeds them. Some of the components that will be possible to monitor condition for, are ball screws, linear control, encoders, belts, servomotors and servo cards. However the work isn’t not a complete concept in itself, more measurements are needed to be performed over time to create a normal situation and identify error development graphs to set the triggers in the software. As analysis and collection of measurement data became more time consuming than planned, the evaluation of MT-LINKi and AI Servo Monitor has not been performed and a further description of the work has been provided.

Abstract:

Background: In the competition for the consumer of tomorrow it is not likely going to be enough to deliver material value. Companies will have to offer immaterial values through experiences. One way of doing this is by the design of the product. The relevance is emphasised further as there is little research available regarding immaterial value creation and design.

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to contribute with understanding for how design can add immaterial value to a product.

Research method: Initially a number of concepts were constructed out of theories originating in widely different theoretical fields. These concept were then evolved by interpretation of a number of interviews with relevant actors.

Result: The immaterial values that are added to a piece of furniture by design can be understood with the help of main categories: aesthetic and social value. The creationof these values can to a large extent be understood in the terms of a social construction carried by a number of actors in a value configuration. A story is constructed which give the piece of furniture value. Knowledge is of great importance for the value appreciation of the consumer/user. The result should have great generality as it is of a concept creation quality.

Abstract:
For many years, buckets have been equipped with teeth to help penetrate, gouge and breakout materials. The teeth also works as wear parts and can be replaced when they are worn down, and thus increase the service life of the bucket. The first teeth were made like a one-piece design and to replace such tooth required both cutting and welding which was very time consuming. Today’s modern teeth consist of an adapter that is welded on the bucket and a tooth with a locking system that makes it easy to replace the tooth when needed. The teeth on the market today are cast, which means that the hardness cannot be guaranteed through the whole cast and the hardest tooth is measured to be around 500 HB.   SSABs brand Hardox is the toughest steel on the market. It is extremely wear resistant and has a three time longer service life than ordinary steel. To increase the use of Hardox the possibility to manufacture bucket teeth of three or more plates are examined.   This thesis has applied a product development process to mainly develop concepts of the locking system that holds the adapter and tooth together. The locking systems main requirement is to be hammerless, meaning that it is not hammered in, due to the high risk of injury and longer assembly time. Apart from, the geometry of the tooth will be developed to give a better wear resistance.   The result is a tooth with at least twice as long service life than the cast competitors and two concepts of locking system. Both locking systems meet the requirement of being hammerless and the sustainability is ensured with calculations of shear force. The geometry of the tooth is design to be self-sharpening, which allows it to stay sharper throughout its service life. Wear test using DEM analysis assure a positive outcome.

Abstract:
Abstract   The fuel is put into the process through a burner pipe and this burner pipe is modified to reach a more efficient combustion. The primary target is to enable burning of heterogeneous alternative fuels and increase the production level. Other positive effects from this type of optimization is lowered specific fuel consumption and lowered CO2 emissions. A redundant burner is chosen for the project and overall the project steps are the following: 1. Installing a Jet air nozzle ring in a way so it can move both axially and radially due to temperature changes. 2. Remove the present refractory from the burner and order a new form to decrease the weight of the burner 3. Place a K6 blower in operating the axial channel. 4. Install Gauging equipment (Temp, pressure, ampere blower etc) 5. Carefully observe process values during the modified burners run in time. 6. Evaluate the results of the project 7. With the help of proven potential in the kiln system be able to convince management of the proceeds to invest in a new burner 8. If point 7 is fulfilled with the help of experience, be able to operate as a projectcoordinator in the purchase of a professional burner. This task will include coordinating the project group in various meetings and then lead to an RFQ (Request For Quotation). Results from the project show the great potential in an optimization of a burner at a cement plant. A production increase of 5% could be seen together with a lowered specific energy consumption which is extremely satisfactory results. Unfortunately a breakdown of the system occurred a bit down the path of optimisation that resulted in damages to the kiln. At this stage the optimization was stopped and the old burner was put back after finished kiln repair. Finally crucial to underline is that the proven results in this study convinced the Group Management of buying a new burner. The benefits from a professional tailor made burner are far greater than the cost of buying it. The payback time is roughly around a year for such an investment depending on current market conditions. In this report focus is put on the combustion process at a cement plant. Combustion is the heart of the cement making process and absolutely crucial to have under full control and well optimized.

Abstract:
Rib turbulator is the most effective, economically feasible, and rigorously studied tool to increase thermal performance because of its fundamental nature and due to the vast field of industrial applications. The rib turbulator results in heat transfer enhancement with additional pressure penalties, and thus encourages the researcher and designers towards selecting an efficacious rib configuration. The present work is a study towards detailed heat transfer and flow field characteristics inside a rectangular duct roughened by solid as well as ventilated pentagonal ribs placed transversely on the bottom wall. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, the rib pitch-to-height ratio, the open area ratio, and the Reynolds number based on duct hydraulic diameter fixed during experiments are 0.125, 12, 25%, and 42500, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distribution was mapped by using transient Liquid Crystal Thermography (LCT) technique, while detailed flow measurements were made by using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The investigation focuses towards assessing the influence of three different rib configurations named as solid pentagonal ribs, pentagonal rib with parallel slit, and pentagonal rib with inclined slit, on the local heat transfer fields as well as flow characteristics. The flow mechanisms responsible for high or low heat transfer regions as well as for hot-spot formation in the wake of the ribs are identified and explained. The overall heat transfer and friction factor measurements are observed along with the thermohydraulic performance. Results show that the solid pentagonal ribs are superior to slitted ribs from both heat transfer augmentation and thermo-hydraulic performance perspective. Additionally, the slitted pentagonal ribs significantly control the small-scale vortices present at the leeward corner of the solid pentagonal ribs and eventually facilitates in preventing the hot spots formation with reduced pressure penalty.
