Full textAtria Scandinavia is a company belonging to the Atria Group which is one of the largest companies in the food industry in Finland. One of their factories is located in Sköllersta, Sweden, that produce sausages, burgers and whole-meat products. Two products of whole-meat department was in need of a value stream mapping because the current time studies of the processes were no longer relevant. One of the products are one of the most common and oldest in Atria, sliced whole-muscle and the other a poultry product that is one of the newest. In order to calculate the cost of the sold goods in a correct manner an updated time-study was required. Value Stream Mapping is a powerful tool from the Lean philosophy that gives the company a very good overview of the value stream and all processes. This provides good opportunity for a deep understanding of the processes and value-flows, something that is vital for further improvement. The work with value stream analysis generated following results: • Updated time studies • Process descriptions • Value Stream Maps • Presentation of the value-adding as well as non-value-adding time • A kinship chart with problem areas in the value flows of the products • Possible root causes of problems in the flows • Proposed measures to handle these problems

Full textLundbergs Plåt AB is a small company situated in Jönköping. Their main task is to process different kinds of steel such as stainless steel. Lately, they have shown an interest in Lean production.
On the basis of the situation mentioned above, we developed the purpose to find and decrease the non value-added wastes in the production at Lundbergs Plåt AB. Out of this, we also developed and answered two questions:
- Which wastes can be found with help from a value stream mapping (VSM)?
- In what way can these wastes be reduced and how can these reductions contribute to an improved production?
VSM is the method used to find the non value-added wastes. In the context of Lean production this is a reliable method because it shows in a good way the wastes in a manufacturing process. The VSM was performed on the family of food bin, which is one of the company’s more recurring products.
During the analysis of the value stream we found several wastes in the manufacturing process. All categories of non value-added wastes are represented. Examples of identified wastes are unnecessary transportation and working movement. The limited access to operators who have the right competence and who are allowed to process the food bins, is in our opinion one of the factors that generate most of the non value-added wastes.
Several action proposals were worked out and a conclusion is that one action proposal can generate a reduction of different kind of wastes. The action proposals that can reduce the most of the non value-added wastes are a change of the layout and competence building. This means that one action proposal can reduce or eliminate several wastes at the same time.

Full textThe biggest challenge construction companies are facing at the moment is reducing the unnecessary costs and labor as well as to streamline the work. This is a matter and an investigation that has been done multiple times in recent years because this is a major problem in most construction companies. This report is commissioned by Peab for the purpose of identifying wastes and critical disorders, then drafting action proposals to reduce waste of time and costs. Four different, completed construction projects have been investigated, commissioned by Peab, and are located in Stockholm. These projects include the reconstruction of a roadway intersection and new construction of pedestrian and cycle tracks. These four projects vary in scale, giving a more varied result compared to four very similar projects The gathering of information for this work has mostly included lean construction with the various waste in the work industry, as well as the different principles and methods of lean construction, such as Just-In-Time. Other studies on the construction process have also been made, more specifically the production phase, the planning of the work. The difference between value creation time and non-value creation time has been dealt with, as well as risk management and how to conduct a risk analysis. Interviews have also been conducted with the aim of identifying the most critical wastes and interferences. The gathering of facts from the interviews has been reported in the results. It emerged that the four most critical wastes were defects/rework, waiting, transportation and extra processing. In summary, action proposals using lean construction, interviews and the knowledge from this report have been developed to reduce these disturbances and wastages with help of for example Jidoka and PDCA to increase time and cost efficiency in the production process. In short, the concept of waste and disturbance can be defined differently. Waste is an activity that does not contribute anything to the business, and a disturbance is a matter of disturbing the work.

Full textPlastex is a company with 20 employees in Skellefteå, which manufactures extruded plastic products. Today, they are trying to re-use and recycle as much as they can, but they face difficulties in the re-use process since the mixing procedure between new and re-used material is complicated. This creates a lot of waste, which in turn cost the company unnecessary amounts of money. The purpose with this work has been to examine if there is a smoother and cheaper way to re-use and recycle materials, compared to the way Plastex does today. This by first mapping the production and then create suggestions regarding the material handling. The objective has been to present suggestions to Plastex that may lead to a reduced amount of waste and costs in the future, and therefore also a more effective production. A search for relevant theory was completed to facilitate the idea generation. The theory was also used to evaluate and further develop the different ideas. The iterative method called project circle and project spiral was used throughout the project, which meant that each phase was reviewed several times. A Gantt chart was also created to keep track of given deadlines. Different methods were used to gather information about Plastex, including interviews and polls. This was analyzed while the idea generation began, using the Gordon method, brainstorming, and the discussion method to name a few. All idea generation methods resulted in a number of solutions which were further developed and then evaluated with coarse screening, pros and cons, a relative decision matrix, and a criteria-weighted method. A requirement specification was also used to weigh the different ideas against demands and wishes that were considered important. Finally, there were some solutions that were considered relevant to proceed with in a future work. Plastex is recommended to educate its personnel in waste management and also to simplify the sorting of waste by creating clearer markings on recycling containers. The company is also advised to purchase automatic suction machines to improve the working conditions for the employees who currently have to manually empty the bins under the punches. Furthermore, the company is advised to strive towards being better of taking care and use their employees’ knowledge and ideas, since it is the workers who are experts in their respective areas and know what works and what should be improved.

Full textThe number of companies in Sweden has continually increased in recent years, leading to greater competition and an increase in customer requirements. Many companies today choose to implement Lean, this with the idea of being more efficient and competitive. The purpose of the report is to analyze possibilities of using Lean in project, based on various types of waste and other supportive aspects. The work was performed at the company prgsweden and is limited to investigating a specific project within the company. The study was conducted through analysis of the present situation as well as observations and interviews with main partners within the project. The study's questions were aimed at identifying which waste are present within the project, as well as improvement measures for these. The results of the study are that the most common waste in projects are rework, waiting, movement and transport. The project business needs to use Lean to; standardize, eliminate waiting times, eliminate unnecessary movements as well as create clear jon descriptions and routines. According to the collected empirin and theory, standardization of project proficiency as well as standardization of tools and workplaces are the basis for full optimization. With the help of the 5S method and weekly meeting, external communication can be improved, unnecessary workplace movement can be minimized and revisits on the workplace reduced.

Full textIn the construction industry it is important to find ways of working that in the long term lowers construction costs so as to produce a product that requires less consumption of resources, but which also continues to be competitive. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how employees at Skanska's construction project "Trädgårdarna" in Boglundsängen, Örebro, work to minimize wastes (non value-adding activities). It also seeks to identify common wastes that occur, both generally on construction sites but in particular on the building project "Trädgårdarna", and finally to come up with suggestions on measures to minimize these wastes. This thesis is based on a qualitative method in the form of interviews and observations. When this thesis was written production was at an early stage. The results of this thesis demonstrate that there are both strengths and weaknesses regarding how work on "Trädgårdarna" is pro-gressing. Although the production was in an early stage, during the time of writing this thesis, the results show that the staff appreciates orderliness at their workplace and try to maintain this through different means. Overall, the staff work well to reduce wastage in the workplace. The wastes which have arisen primarily did so due to deficiencies in the design and/or production planning. To reduce the wastage rate and maintain an effective work it is of great importance to have a well-planned design, to implement work preparations as frequently as possible, to have an orderly workplace, to take advantage of the staff's knowledge and commitment and to use some form of coordinated delivery system to minimize inventory and waiting times.

Full text- Which Lean administration application methods exists and which would work best for a service company? Based on a value-stream-mapping, what wastes in the form of non-value-added activities and problem areas can be identified with the aim of enhancing a company´s efficiency and simplifying their internal processes? What are the challenges of implementing Lean administration at a service company? To find out how a service company can implement Lean in an office environment, this study has been conducted using a literature study to attain five different methods for introducing Lean into the administrative support processes. A comparison of the five methods resulted in the study presenting a combination of three of these methods. With the help of the created value-stream-mapping at the case-company, improvement proposals have been developed to help them eliminate non-value-added activities and waste in the form of unnecessary moves and waiting, which means that they can dedicate more time to value-added activities or other work. For continued work, it is recommended that the case-company assign one or more employees responsible for implementing Lean; as the biggest problem in the case-company has been that many projects are started but never finished because no-one is responsible for the projects. Furthermore, they should also study other processes within the company at other departments. Continued recommendation for further studies on the subject of Lean and Lean Administration is to study the value-added activities instead of simply focusing on the activities that do not create any value. It would be interesting to investigate how many and which processes are value-adding and if they could be used and imitated in other processes and activities within a company.

Full textCompanies have to continuously improve which is often done through a systematic approach to improvements. This is often based on data which does not excist in companies with a high amount of manual labor and a low use of digital systems. Therefore this report studies how companies as the one previously mentioned should collect data. This is done as a case study at Elitfönster which is a leading window maker, who has a high degree of rework in their process which they aim to reduce. The result of the study is an instruction of how a data collection should be performed to generate relevant data to be able to improve. The study also investigates how root causes to waste are found through two different methods. The conclusion of this study is that the planning of a data collection is important to be able to get a good result. The company should also nominate a department that is responsible for the joint resources which causes problems in the production.

Full textBackground: Through recent years, manufacturing companies have faced increasing customer demand and competition, which have forced companies to work with activity development to survive in the business. Wastes which occur in manufacturing processes affect profitability and include activities customer won’t pay for. Value stream mapping is a tool developed to identify and eliminate wastes throughout the process and help companies increase efficiency. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to value stream map the painting process at Holtab and identify wastes and to propose suggestions to minimize the wastes. Method: The paper is deductive and follows a positivistic approach. The empirical data is collected through semi-structured and unstructured for a qualitative case study. The sample used were samples through convenience and snowball sample. The theoretical data has been collected by using databases and literature from Linnaeus University Library. Conclusions: By value stream mapping the painting process from sheet processing to delivery to end assemblage. The authors have identified wastes throughout the process and suggestions for Holtab to minimize the wastes.

Full textBackground and problem: This study is about a box store at Scania's cabin factory in Oskarshamn. The study was based on an assignment from a logistics developer at Scania. The box storage process had not been studied in any further sense before when the idea was to install an automated box store, but when this became too expensive, the project was scrapped. The closure of the project meant that Scania had to rethink the existing box store and find efficient solutions to the current box store process instead. In a manufacturing company like Scania, it becomes necessary to have different types of stocks and stores. In stocks and stores, material flows are a central part, which means how the company moves and manages its material. Efficient material flows that occur in a cost-effective way in stocks and stores can create competitive advantages over their competitors. With this in mind, it becomes important for a company to constantly evaluate and develop its material flows. This can be achieved through the development of existing techniques and principles, but also through the development of new ones. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to look at Scania in Oskarshamn's box storage process to identify wastes and problems. Part of the purpose was also to find opportunities for improvement after the identification of wastes and problems which would increase the efficiency of the box storage process. The study will result in a basis for Scania on how they can work on improving the box storage process. Method: A qualitative case study design has been carried out where elements of both qualitative and quantitative research method has been applied. By means of unstructured and semi-structured interviews as well as non-participant observations, the empirical data has been gathered. Existing literature and articles have formed the basis of the theory. Conclusion: In Scania's box storage process, a number of different wastes and problems have been identified. For these wastes and problems, various opportunities for improvement and possible working methods have been developed, which could reduce these and create a more efficient box storage process.

Planning the work can lead to less waste, better quality and an improved working environment, which also benefits the company's finances. Work preparations are a tool in the building and construction industry to plan work steps for a smoother and safer work process, and the result is often better. Previous studies on work preparations show that there are shortcomings in the work with work preparations and the purpose of this work is to investigate how the use of work preparations works within Peab Sverige AB. Also show how increased awareness of time and finances linked to work preparations can benefit the company and contribute with improvement suggestions. To gain an understanding of this, a literature study and interview study have been conducted. The result shows that work preparations are a good tool that is appreciated as there will be better flow in production when the parties involved plan the work together and clarify the conditions. The study also shows that lack of time affects the execution of work preparations and that follow-up of work preparations hardly or not at all takes place. The conclusions of this work are to allocate time and prioritize work committees, involve employees as much as possible, improve follow-up of work and that work committees require commitment and systematic work for maximum benefit.

Full textBackground: The shaping process at Svensson and Linnér is a process that aims to change the shape of the product by pressing and bending. In a production process there usually exists a number of wastes or capacity constraints which not can be identified until a process mapping is made. A mapping of a process therefore enables companies to become aware of the waste and the capacity constraints that exist. This enables companies to improve their processes by eliminating lead times, waiting times and unnecessary movements. Purpose: The aim of this thesis to identify waste and capacity constraints in the shaping process at Svensson & Linnér and to explain its underlying causes. The aim is then to propose improvements that should be done in order to increase the capacity in the shaping process. Method: The study is conducted as a case study at the company Svensson & Linnér where data was collected through participant and structured observations and through unstructured and semi-structured interviews. A process mapping and calculations of capacity utilization has been made to identify waste and capacity constraints. Cause - effect diagrams was then established to identify the underlying causes and to suggest improvements that could lead to increased capacity. Conclusions: The study has concluded that it in the shaping process exists wastes in terms of unnecessary inventory, motion, transportation, waiting, incorrect procedures, defective products and untapped creativity of the operatives. After calculations of capacity utilization in the process, it was identified that the cutting and grinding robot is the capacity limit of the process. Based on the underlying causes have five suggestions for improvements been identified that could lead to increased capacity in the shaping process. Svensson & Linnér should only have one stock for punched veneer where the FIFO principle and rack storage of palletized goods should be used. In the process should errors and flaws be fixed in long terms instead of provisionally and working methods should be standardized. In the robot cells should dustbins be placed so that waste can be disposed immediately and not at the shift change later. To increase the capacity of the capacity constraint, cutting and grinding robot, it is suggested that the company should adjust their capacity to demand for the product by using overtime in the process.

GETRAG All Wheel Drive AB is situated in the city of Köping, Sweden. The company develops, manufactures and supplies transmission components for the auto¬motive industry. Through project 580-9 the company is planning an assembly line for a newly developed product. For this project GETRAG wants to create a materials handling that is cost efficient, lives up to the customer demands on high quality and excludes handling of wooden pallets near the assembly line. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to suggest a cost efficient materials handling where packaging materials that give off dust or splinters are not used near the assembly line.
To examine the questions in the thesis a study on how the support of materials to the assembly line should be handled has been made. It is based on theories of lean production and packaging logistics. The study includes an analysis of today’s flow and gives suggestions for improvements. We have also evaluated the costs and effects of replacing wooden packaging with alternative packaging materials. In addition, a survey of the market for alternative packaging materials has been made.
The results show that to create an efficient handling of materials it is important to eliminate waste like over production, unnecessary storage and unnecessary transportations. To assure a constant flow of articles brought to the assembly line the replenishment should be equivalent to the consumption during a certain period of time, or multiples of this time, for all articles. Furthermore, the assembler should not be the one bringing materials to the assembly line; this should be done by a material handler.
The study also shows that different packaging should be used for different articles, depending on product characteristics and where the supplier is situated. Excluding packaging material made out of wood or cardboard results in costs that must be weighed against customer demands. When it is too expensive to let the supplier deliver the articles in a packaging that does not give of dust or splinters, a repacking station is a possible solution; in the case of project 580-9 in the form of an in-house manual unpacking before the assembly.
Our recommendation is that GETRAG All Wheel Drive AB should try to achieve a more cost efficient materials handling through lean production and six sigma and at the same time put more resources in to packaging development.

Full textSweden today, the construction industry, is experiencing a boom that creates both positive working conditions and negative strains. It will be built faster, at a lower price, with less waste than ever before. With these conditions, it is necessary to increase efficiency and reduce waste within the building. The approach for accomplishing this includes various enhancement tools, one of which is LEAN, that focuses on eliminating different types of waste in the industry. The purpose of this work is to map and observe material handling processes, to then analyze and detect shortcomings. This will create awareness and improvement for future projects. In the beginning of the thesis, a study of literature, articles and scientific reports was made to acquire knowledge and understanding of the subject. The report was then based on a case study that was carried out in Serneke's project, Hestra Garden City, through a number of workplace visits with observations where most of the data was collected. The result of the study clearly shows how much waste (in terms of time and skills) there is in this part of the construction process, as much as 66 percent could be defined as waste of time and resources, as also presented in the report. Herein lies a potential profit that can be made for construction companies. Not to mention another form of service that suppliers can offer, thus creating more jobs.

Full textRullprofil i Orebro AB is mainly manufacturing roll formed profiles for usage in the construction industry. The move of the operation in year 2016 has meant a high turnover of personnel for the company, and this has led to that the inner setup times between products to be manufactured in the present are higher than the company is striving for. Because of this Rullprofil now wants to clarify what different options they have for measures that can be taken to reduce these. To create as clear of an insight as possible of how the processes regarding this setup is currently being performed and which measures that would be most appropriate to improve these, a wide variety of observations, interviews, documentation, literature and tools for analysis were used. Since this has to do with setup times, SMED was chosen as a method. An ever so more clear understanding of the problem was generated throughout this project, and a lack of routines and delimitations between the processes regarding these setup times were identified. It became clear that an earlier SMED-project the company have performed demanded follow-up regarding several areas. The unclear delimitations between the processes and routines needed measures, and beyond that there were a big potential for improvements regarding efficiency, planning and quality. The insight that were created throughout this study was that one of the activities performed in the processes in question, the rolling mills, takes up a big part of the total time required in the present, while many of the other activities has a big variation in the time they require respectively. All these activities together then builds up a large amount of after-adjustments to be made, because the initial setup often isn’t reliable enough, and these after-adjustments is both complicated to perform and time consuming. Further analysis regarding delimitations between the processes this project handles, time required, movement and breakdown of the activities were then used to generate a large selection of suggestions for improvement. These suggestions are directed towards working out most of the after-adjustments, reduce the time required to perform different activities and then carry them out parallelly with as much as possible prepared. Together these suggestions have the potential to minimize the time required to perform the inner setup, a calculated estimation is that the suggestions would lower these required times with 80-90%. An evaluation and discussion are afterwards given regarding the uncertainties that exists, implementation of given suggestions and other areas of relevance. After this, other suggestions for improvements that have been realized throughout this project that can be of value to Rullprofil is given.

Full textThis thesis has been carried out at as a single case study at Scania AB in Södertälje, Sweden. The purpose of the study was to examine possibilities to increase the productivity and eliminate waste through the implementation of a new workshop layout at Scania’s crankhaft production. The thesis was based on a literature study where different lean principles, production systems and layout shaping were covered as well as an empirical study at Scania AB. The case study was divided into four phases: Mapping of present state Layout shaping Analysis of the proposed layout A data collection was carried out before mapping the current state. The data collection consisted of both given secondary data from the case company and the primary data from own measurements, observations and interviews in order to gain credibility to the study. With the collected data an analysis of the current state was done where problem areas were identified and documented. The analysis mainly showed that Scania AB had problems with long lead times and difficulties to maintain FIFO due to high WIP-levels. A significant reason to the high WIP-levels was the result of a big inventory between the two organisational departments in the workshop. The identified problem areas, cycle times and future sale forecasts were then used as input parameters to develop a new layout using Muther’s (1968) method Systematic Layout Planning (SLP). The final result rendered in a new layout proposal which increased the productivity with 37% and eliminated waste in different areas. The lead time was estimated to decrease from the initial 5,4 days to 1,5 days with a significant decrease in the inventory mentioned above.

Full textThe study is a qualitative report in which interviews and observations were conducted on the project Simonsland in Borås. It is a partner project, which means that clients, contractors and subcontractors work in collaboration. The thesis focuses on logistics in the Construction industry, where the aim is to investigate non-value-creating activities impact on production and what an increased focus on building-specific workplace logistics result in. Internal workplace logistics has not been prioritized as transport solutions to and from the workplace has. Logistics is a major part of a Construction site and an important factor for creating competitiveness and profitability. Logistics in the Construction industry is complicated when working in project form and each project has different conditions and location with a short life span. In each project, different subcontractors and suppliers are employed, which may be requirements from the client but also chosen because of experience of specific tasks. What controls the projects' purchases and the selection of subcontractors and suppliers is above all economy and flexibility. Projects are often not executed according to plan and changes to documents are commonplace. Unlike the manufacturing industry, therefore, logistics is different as it has to be adapted to each project and the possibility of development in the form of cooperation is complicated. In previous studies of building logistics, the result has shown that major savings can be made if the focus is on workplace logistics. What is relevant to work with in order to make logistics more effective is Lean Construction, industrialized Construction and cooperation that will contribute to an increased comprehensive view. In order to direct the company towards its goals, different efficiency variables are prioritized. These variables create competitive advantages and are customer service, flexibility, cost, time and capital. The perception is that customer service is the variable with the highest priority. Focus is on direct costs and flexibility in the project. The result shows that logistics in the Construction industry is down-prioritized, it requires complex projects to focus on logistics. Many wastes arise due to inadequate planning. Non-value-creating activities primarily contribute to increased transport needs, high indirect costs, unnecessary movements and due to the lack of planning and communication missions, which in turn is due to lack of time. An increased focus on building-specific logistics would reduce indirect costs. It would also contribute to a more effective work that would lead to a reduction in non-value-creating activities and its consequences, as well as the time-consuming. The challenge is to start a change that all parties involved are involved in and understand the benefits of. The improvement proposals that are developed are above all that more time is required for design and planning. That a staff member focused on logistics should work at the company, who plans logistics in advance instead of the temporary solutions. To work with Lean to create an understanding of the necessities of change and how to use the resources that are being released. That tools and methods should adapt to the specific needs, such as digitization of the material chain for easier overview of what is available at the workplace. Create a broader overview through visualization and thus also improves communication.

Full textThe following thesis work has been conducted as a case study at GN Hearing and a literature study, where different theoretical areas are used as the basis for the workshop that was held at the company. In addition, structured observations, surveys and interviews have been conducted to provide as comprehensive a picture of the current situation as possible. The study addresses the topic of value stream mapping and aims at substantializing GN Hearing's return flow for a particular product family. The work leads to an analysis that, with the support of the theory, presents improvement proposals and tools, as well as a future desired value flow. The thesis describes the flow from a point of view that has Lean, process orientation and value creation as a basis, which enabled the development of a new, more efficient flow with less waste. The questions that pervade the study treats mapping the value flow to identify waste and distinguishing value creation activities from non-value creation within GN Hearing's ITE return flow. The results of the value stream mapping shows that, of all identified activities, non-value adding activities are a full 99% of the total. Non-value creating activities were found primarily in the form of waiting and variation. With the proposed improvements, a new flow is emerged, where activities considered non-value adding are reduced by about 50%. In addition, other tools for further continuous improvements were also presented.

Full textThis bachelor’s thesis has been carried out on Volvo Car's test track Hällered Proving Grounds. The thesis is based on studying a team's activities and identifying bottlenecks. From the results, the authors will provide feedback on improvement work for the team. The method of the study has been a direct analysis where the team's activities have been observed when carried out on site. As the team does not work with a traditional type of product flow, a combination of time study and value flow analysis has been developed with the help of the team leaders. The total observed time consisted of about 20 working days. Of the total observed time, approximately 25% consisted of value-added activities. About 28% of non-value-added but necessary activities caused by the HPG team. About 22% non-value-added activities caused by the HPG team. As well as about 24% non-value-added activities caused by sample commissioners. The time required for necessary but non-value-added activities by the sample client was almost immaterial. The most protruding bottleneck that was found in common between the HPG team and the test taker was the problems with the technical equipment. The conclusion of the thesis is that there are many areas for improvement to work with. The areas that provide the opportunity for clearest improvement are the preventive maintenance work required for the technical equipment not to act as a bottleneck in the flow.

Full textFrom the literature studied, it is stated that 5S is considered to be one of the easiest lean tools for a company to implement, but from a study about 5S by Abolhassani et al. (2016), it was found that only 49% of the companies that participated in their study had implemented 5S. 5S is a lean tool that is used to create order and structure, this study examines whether the implementation of 5S has been perceived as easy or difficult and whether 5S has been perceived to lead to a difference amongst the lean wastes. This study was carried out with the help of a digital survey and interviews of people who work as, among other things, production and quality managers. From the survey and interviews, it was found that 5S affects the wastes waiting and motion. The reason for this is, among other things, that workers do not have to go around looking for misplaced tools. Another finding was that the implementation of 5S appears to be more difficult than presented in the literature. To further the study, an investigation during a longer period of time can be carried out. This would give the opportunity to conduct multiple interviews and to receive a larger amount of responses from the questionnaire.

Full textDava Foods in Skara has been the industry for this final year project where they processing egg in different conditions. For this project has the process where they manufacture protein drinks as they sold to the stores been in focus. The main goals for the project were to bring a value streaming map of the current state of the production and suggest improvements based on this map. The second goal was to find which types of wastes that occur and find improvements. To create an understanding of the existing process, an analysis was made where the stream was observed. Observations and interviews were used to collect data for the project. The analysis of the exciting process has been based on for the implementation stage. During the implementation stage was different tools used to collect data. PDCA has been a tool where was followed during the whole project. The value streaming map has been a central tool which was used to bring out a value streaming map. To collect the times which was needed for the value streaming map a stopwatch was used. The project result in different improvement proposal where many of the proposals included was to automate the processes. One solution was to change the operator against a robot cell which would streamline the process which would result in a lower throughput. Change machine was another solution where many stops occur. A full automation concept was suggested to combine these two suggestions, where both a robot and a machine was bought. The last suggestion of the value streaming map was about to just produces one product at a time. Within the wastes were three suggestions given where maintenance was the best solution to reduce the wastes. To determine which one of the suggestions was the best solution a pick chart was used to priority how hard the suggestion was and benefit. The conclusion was to purchasing the machine where stops frequently occur. This suggestion would create a higher efficiency in the production at the same time where the condition about price would give the best solution. Improvements of maintenance would also result as the best solution to increase the efficiency for the current machines and reduce the number of stops.

Full textThis report describes a project which is conceived at Aspervall Instruments AB. This project is a part of the course “degree project of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering”, MSGC17, at Karlstad University, the faculty of health, science and technology. The aim of the project was to present a layout proposal that could be used for a planned move of Aspervall Instruments operations from existing premises to new larger premises. The report consists of several different parts. The first part presents a current position analysis. With the help of the data collection (interviews, observations and study of customer orders), the cause-effect analysis and spaghetti diagram an entire picture of the company's machine park has been developed to understand the problems that exist in the current layout. The following part was the development of various layout proposals which solves the problems that were encountered under current position analysis. Measurement of machinery and their related equipments, measurement of the new premises and systematic layout planning have been used to map several layouts. All layout suggestions have been drafted using Microsoft Visio and Smart Draw. During the first screening together with the management, three layout suggestions, suggestion 2,4 and 6 were left out. Then the remaining layout suggestions 1,3 and 5 have been evaluated using two methods. The first method was about the number of reductions in transport and unnecessary movements, and the following one was about how well various proposals can solve the problems which exist within the current layout. Layout proposal 5 was the best result in the evaluation and is the most suitable proposal. The proposal reduces the unnecessary transport and movement with 31% and got highest points in the evaluation table. The proposal consists of comprehensive tools and material handling with a compact machine park that meets all requirements. The proposal provides a good opportunity for job rotation and transfer of skills not only in the group but also between different groups, which can lead to increased efficiency and can help to build a strong team spirit. The proposal is outlined so that moving of the machines which are planned to be replaced / purchased in the near future will not affect production. For continuing work, various improvement proposals have been presented as well as an evaluation has also been conducted to facilitate the management in their decision regarding what to begin with, in terms of efficiency and easy to implement. According to the evaluation tool handling and regular meetings with the staff are the two easy-to-implement enhancements and can provide effective and responsive results.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of this thesis is to identify improvements in a returns flow for products with a short life cycle. Three research questions has been formulated in order to enhance the return flow: 1. How is the returns flow process built for products with short life cycle? 2. What are the challenges in the returns flow? 3. How can the returns process be improved? Method – In conversation with the case company and during the writers literature study a problem area was discovered. This established a foundation for the purpose and research questions. The study was performed as a case study which included observations and an interview. A case study was considered as the most appropriate method for this study since the writers aimed to gather profound knowledge within the subject. A theoretical framework was built upon the literature study to help the writers create an understanding of the returns flow and its challenges. Findings – To be able to identify possible improvements the study integrated data and theory. Recommendations based on this study is to introduce the function of gatekeeping in a returns flow, which contributes to a create a greater value in the returns flow. The analytical framework can help companies to implement better structures for their returns flow and the writers can also recommend to follow one standard which enables a more efficient return flow. Implications – The theory argue that the knowledge is lacking on how to manage a return flow, this is confirmed with the gathered data where the return flow is not designed to create efficiency. To tackle this issue, the writers choose to intertwine two returns flow theories together with a lean perspective. With the integration of these theories, this new viewpoint had the expectation to achieve a more optimal returns flow. This would also give the possibility to find the value creating processes within the returns flow and help to extract as much as possible of the product life cycle. Limitations – The study is limited to a case study, this entails that the credibility and the generalization is low. This is a disadvantage, but this study can be seen as a starting point and therefore the case study is the most suitable. The theoretical framework that is presented in the study also needs practical verification to earn credibility.

Full textThe thesis was executed at Kynningsrud Prefab AB in Uddevalla. The company produces precast elements within the construction industry. Currently, the company is not fully satisfied with the internal communication or the flow of material or finished products. Thus, Kynningsrud is planning to create a production system, KPS, in order to keep in pace with their current sales expansion. Through deliberations and discussions regarding the issue together with the company, a decision was made to focus on the manufacturing of the concrete walls. The conclusion came down to the purpose of the thesis would be to analyze and identify opportunities of improvement and to develop proposals targeted lean production. To eliminate non-value adding time as well as working to standardize operations and make the internal communication more efficient the two theories The seven wastes+one and the 5S tool was elected as theoretical framework. The necessary information about each step of the manufacturing process was collected by observing, interviewing and participation in the working process. The information was assembled to six current state descriptions of the production and describes every operation in each step of the processes. Finally, the description was analyzed according to the theoretical framework. The analysis resulted in eight improvement proposals that together would eliminate waste with a total time of approximately 12 hours a day for all analyzed operations combined. It meant a cost reduction of about 3,500 Swedish crowns per day. The compilation of the information collected was illustrated through a gap analysis. The time duration that was used for the saving calculations were estimated values through observations and interviews with staff members. When calculating the time possible to save the lowest estimated time duration were used and the results may therefore contain numbers of unknown cases. It makes the calculations the theoretically lowest savings that can be made. In reality, the cost reduction could be greater if the improvement proposals were implemented.

Full textIn an more globalized world where markets have gotten more competative within the cunstruction business, has resulted in contractors being faced with higher demands for winning a bid. The constant struggle posed by an ongoing project is that a working day for a professional worker consists of 20-40% direct work, also known as value-adding work. Remaining time involves non-value-creating activities such as waiting, material handling, reworking and error corrections that lead to high production costs. The purpose of this study is to see what type of impact visual control, also known as the Lean board, can have in the work enviroment. What improvements can be applied in the construction business and what are the positive effects, how can they be applied in practice and in an efficient way. This study is based on a qualitative approach, with the hopes of getting a clear picture of how the work enviroment is today and what tools are more relevant in the design of visual control. Through the use of semistructured interviews and observations, the researchers have chosen to study the target group who encounters most dilemmas on a daily basis. With the use of the abductive working method, the advantage of maintaining flexibility as well as combining existing theory, empiricity and method in a systematic way makes it very effective. The data collection on which the study is based on are both primary and secondary, as materials from different types of scientific journals, course literature, books, reports, but also other electronic sources are used to build a steady reference frame. The report is delimited to provide an improvement proposal for the implementation of visual management to the RO Group Building Services. In order to streamline business productivity and increase the commitment of the management team. Results of collected data from the interviews and observations indicate that there is a high potential for streamlining planning activities. Some of those are planning of occupational workers and free forums and disturbance logs, which counteract disturbances and deviations in the current projects. Based on the interviews as a starting point, the researchers have found that there are wrecks in the daily work, which are usually hidden during production. Thereby the need for a planning tool that reveals real-time imbalances and wrecks is much needed within the company.
