Abstract:
In soils with subsoil acidity, root growth of plants sensitive to acidity is restricted to surface layers resulting in reduced water and nutrient uptake and low yields of crops. In the present study, the use of the lime-slotting technique, with slots 0.15 m wide and 0.8 m deep, for providing long-term improvements of the adverse soil chemical and physical characteristics of an acid, clay soil was investigated. Lime-slotting using a rotary slotter resulted in a uniform increase in soil pH to the full depth of the slot (0.8 m), indicating a thorough mixing of the lime with the small soil fragments produced by slotting, as they are thrown up into the rotor shroud and redeposited in the slot. In contrast, ripping to 1.0 m depth and delve ploughing to 0.8 m depth only changed the soil pH close to the soil surface. The saturated hydraulic conductivity, total porosity and air-filled porosity at a potential of - 10 kPa measured on soil cores was significantly (P < 0.05) increased within the slot, compared to the undisturbed soil. Values of unsaturated hydraulic conductivities K(�) and diffusivities D(�), calcualted from the saturated conductivity and water potential-water content relationships, also showed increases in the slot, at high water contents. Although a polishing of sections of the slot wall due to rubbing of the rotors was observed in the field, the saturated conductivities of the cores taken across the slot walls did not show significant (P < 0.05) differences compared with the undisturbed soil adjacent to the slot. The extent of protection of the loosened soil in the slots from recompaction during subsequent farm trafficking was evaluated in a vineyard. Soil strength measurement showed distinct differences between field plots which were non-ameliorated, lime-slotted or deep ripped. Soil strength was estimated using penetrometer cone index measurements, which were made when the soils were at similar water contents. Zones of high soil strength observed in the non-ameliorated soils, were reduced in the ripped and slotted soil. However, the upper part of the ripped soil had soil strengths higher than the lower part, indicating repacking under trafficking. In contrast in the slotted soil, the slotted area had low soil strength to depth, indicating greater protection of the loosened soil during trafficking. This could be due to bridging of the tractor wheels and implements across the slot on to the stronger undisturbed soil on either side. Thus, lime-slotting is an effective technique for long-term amelioration of the adverse physical and chemical properties of dense clay soils with subsoil acidity. This should encourage root growth to depth within the slots, and use of the water stored in the subsoil.

A slotted disc spring consists of two segments: a coned disc segment and a number of lever arm segments. In this study, a load–displacement formula for the slotted disc spring is newly developed in the form of energy method by considering both rigid and bending deflections of the two segments. This formula is developed with the aim to further improve the SAE formula which is limited to a straight slotted disc spring. The coned and the lever arm angles of the straight slotted disc spring are the same. They are different for a bended slotted disc spring. Because of this limitation, it is geometrically impractical to employ the SAE formula for a bended slotted disc spring. To achieve the goal of this study, new calculations based on geometric and material properties inputs are developed for a bended slotted disc spring. A firm background study based on the theory of Almen is presented in developing new load–displacement calculations for a bended slotted disc spring.

Abstract:
Conventional solid reinforced concrete (RC) beams were modified to slotted beams for consideration as thermal insulation structural components. The slotted beam consisted of an outer and an inner beam, respectively, with a slot located near the middle of the beam along its width direction for filling thermal insulation material. Flexural and thermal behavior of the slotted beams were investigated. Three RC reference solid beams and six slotted beams were fabricated and tested under four-point bending tests. The test results indicated that the failure mode of both slotted beams and the solid beams was flexural failure. However, the damage process of the slotted beams was different from that of the solid beams at the final loading stage. The moment curvature analysis indicated that the tensile reinforcement ratio of the outer and inner beams had an important effect on the flexural behavior, especially the ductility of the slotted beams. Thermal study indicated that the heat transfer coefficient of the slotted beam was greatly reduced and the thermal inertia factor increased a lot, compared with the solid beam. In addition, FE simulation results showed that a new frame structure using slotted beams exhibited obvious and attractive thermal insulation property.

Numerical simulation method were performed to comparatively study the heat transfer and resistance characteristics of smooth tubetransversal and longitudinal flow circular fin tube and longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube; researched the flowheat transfer and resistance characteristics of longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube with five different fin angle. Results show that, with the same piping mode and Re number, heat transfer coefficient of longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube is 1.4~1.8 times of smooth tube, heat transfer coefficient of transversal and longitudinal flow circular fin tube is 1.1~1.5 times of smooth tube, longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube with α=105° has the best heat transfer coefficient; the resistance of longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube is 0.25~0.75 times of transversal flow circular fin tube, and higher than longitudinal flow circular fin tube, longitudinal flow slotted umbrella fin tube with α=105° has the lowest resistance of all slotted umbrella fin tubes.

Through the similar simulation experimental study, using the microscopic fracture detection and the macroscopic observation method, a comprehensive analysis of the complex slotted seam cartridge and the conventional slotted seam cartridge's blasting effect, the analysis also indicated that the complex slotted seam cartridge has the better directional fracture effect and the higher energy utilization, and is smaller to the surrounding rock damage.

The transient flowing model of slotted liner completion was established by superposition principle based on the geometric model of slotted liners, with the point source function and the single slotting equal to line source, and then the optimized model of slotted liner completion parameter was established with the skin factor of slotted liners completion as evaluation index. After analyzing the parameter sensitivity with cases, the slot density is confirmed as the main reason leading to flow convergence and additional flow resistance. Furthermore, the optimization principles of slotted liners completion of horizontal well are determined. These results are significant in optimizing the slot distribution pattern and parameter allocation.

Summary The goal of this research is to study the structural integrity and slot width change of slotted liners by comparing them with a 3D finite element analysis and experimental study. Slotted liners are widely used because of their ability to ensure wellbore integrity and sand control. During installation and operations, the slotted liners must be strong enough to hold axial loads and radial compression to prevent excessive buckling and deformation of slots. Laboratory collapse and bending tests were conducted with commercially available slotted liners. Experiments were designed to select the grades of materials, diameter/thickness of pipes, and slot patterns. Finite element models were developed to predict the integrity of slotted liners and acceptable slot width changes. The study considered slotted liner design and analyzed how much material grades, casing/tubing dimension, and slot patterns affect the risk of slotted liner failure. The practical implications of this work to the oil fields are (1) a numerical simulation model can predict the closure of slots with reasonable accuracy if the work hardening stress-strain curve after elastic limit is accurately input; therefore, we may select the slotted liner design with sufficient stability after installation, and (2) the strength gains due to work hardening are significantly larger for a lower-grade base pipe than a higher-grade base pipe. Therefore, we need to re-evaluate using a lower-grade base pipe before using a thinner high-grade base pipe for some applications.

Studien analyserar Diana Wynne Jones bok Det levande slottet (2005) och Studio Ghiblis film med samma titel (2004) i syfte att undersöka vilka förändringar som skett i övergången från bok till film. Delarna som undersöks är narrationen, karaktärerna, värderingar och budskap samt ifall filmen anpassats till japanska förhållanden och/eller japansk publik. Detta görs genom en komparativ metod. Studien diskuterar även möjligheten att använda något av verken i undervisning för årskurserna F–3. Resultatet visar att skillnaderna mellan bok och film är så stora att det är svårt att endast tala om en filmadaptation och att det därför är bättre att använda begreppet transformation. Även om filmen fortfarande har ett gemensamt tema med boken – alla ska kunna accepteras för den de är – har förändringarna och det nya temat krig tagit överhanden och påverkat narrationen, budskap, värderingar och karaktärer. I filmen finns inga förändringar som pekar på specifik anpassning till japansk publik, men genom filmens teckningar är det ändå tydligt att filmens regissör Hayao Miyazaki ingår i en japansk kultur. Resultatet visar dessutom problematik kring bokens användning i årskurserna F–3, men att det trots detta finns möjligheter att använda både den och filmen för att diskutera värden och budskap i de lägre årskurserna.

Abstract:
Optical biosensors are increasingly being considered for lab-on-a-chip applications due to their benefits such as small size, biocompatibility, passive behaviour and lack of the need for fluorescent labels. The light guiding mechanisms used by many of them result in poor overlap of the optical field with the target molecules, reducing the maximum sensitivity achievable. This thesis presents a new platform for optical biosensors, namely slotted photonic crystals, which engender higher sensitivities due to their ability to confine, spatially and temporally, the peak of optical mode within the analyte itself. Loss measurements showed values comparable to standard photonic crystals, confirming their ability to be used in real devices. A novel resonant coupler was designed, simulated, and experimentally tested, and was found to perform better than other solutions within the literature. Combining with cavities, microfluidics and biological functionalization allowed proof-of-principle demonstrations of protein binding to be carried out. High sensitivities were observed in smaller structures than most competing devices in the literature. Initial tests with cellular material for real applications was also performed, and shown to be of promise. In addition, groundwork to make an integrated device that includes the spectrometer function was also carried out showing that slotted photonic crystals themselves can be used for on-chip wavelength specific filtering and spectroscopy, whilst gas-free microvalves for automation were also developed. This body of work presents slotted photonic crystals as a realistic platform for complete on-chip biosensing; addressing key design, performance and application issues, whilst also opening up exciting new ideas for future study.

Abstract:
Laser cleaning is a non contact, highly controllable process for the removal of contaminants from a surface with minimum or no damage to the substrate material. Laser cleaning has been applied mainly on flat and curved surfaces. Little is known on the phenomena and feasibility of laser cleaning of slotted structures. Slots are common structures in engineering, and can be found in many components. In this PhD work, the feasibility of laser cleaning of alpha case on flat titanium alloy surfaces was initially explored, and then an investigation was made on the use of a pulsed laser for the cleaning of micro to macro slots in silicon and metallic materials. The effects of laser processing parameters on the contaminant removal from these slots were experimentally studied. Laser cleaning thresholds and cleanliness was examined. Meanwhile, finite element modelling (FEM) and time domain finite difference modelling techniques were used to simulate the processes involved to aid the understanding of the technique for process optimisation. The experiments were undertaken to verify if such models are able to accurately predict the cleaning thresholds. The surface and sub-surface characteristics before and after laser cleaning were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been shown that the slot structure and its material properties were not damaged or changed by laser cleaning process. A novel contribution is that surface morphology after the laser ablation could be used as a diagnostic method to indentify the presence of alpha case and measure its thickness due to the specific characteristics of the surface roughness and generated cracks on the ablated surface after laser irradiation. Besides, it has been found that an axial beam which propagates into the narrow slots can successfully clean the tiny particles on the slot sidewalls whose width ranges from 3.5 mm to 13mm. These phenomena had never been reported before.

Industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN) is an application area of WSN used in industrial process monitoring and control with strict time and reliability requirement. WirelessHART standard is the first international standard for IWSN approved by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This is worthwhile to implement this standard on simulator platform. Based on the study of WirelessHART standard, this thesis set up a primary implementation of the MAC layer of WirelessHART standard. To our best knowledge, this is the first comprehensive implementation of WirelessHART using OPNET simulator. The implementation has been evaluated rational. And some improvement of current implementation and standard have also been proposed and implemented. Flexible dedicated slot assignment has also been proposed to reduce the packet loss rate caused by influences of the physical channel.

Research into how one can create architecture that will last beyond the foreseeable future. Part ONE is research based, building up a manifesto based on; structural integrity, aesthetic longevity, programmatic adaptability and cultural relevance. The research is based on observing historical architecture from the past 2,000 years, both looking into how the buildings have stood the test of time physically, but also why they might remain attractive, analysing the comings and goings of beauty through time. The research is compiled and represented through suggested ideal ways of designing each of the architectural elements, such as the wall, window, door, threshold or stair. Part TWO applies the research to a case study; the extension and renovation of the Royal Palace in Stockholm, in order to turn the residence into a public building, with the extension functioning as a connection point between the city landscape and the palace beyond. The design has no specific programme other than allowing the palace complex to be used by the public, as they wish, for the future to come. A large part of the design is essentially made up of sculptural urban landscaping, colonnaded and vaulted walkways both interacting with the waterfront, and bringing the public up to the level of the palace which today stands behind tall walls. Whilst internally the new building functions as an entrance hall with necessary facilities, and creates a route into the existing palace.

Abstract:
This study is an adaptation analysis focusing on character portrayals in Studio Ghibli’s film Howl’s moving castle, which is based on a book of the same name, written by Diana Wynne Jones. Both the film and the book are discussed and analyzed to find differences and similarities between the two. The purpose of the paper is to identify the changes that have been made to the film adaptation in the form of characterizations. Through this study I have shown the media specific differences that have contributed to changes but also reported important similarities. The relationships between the characters have changed a lot to the film adaptation, many emotions appear more open in the film than they did in the book. Media specific differences lie behind much of this, through the filmmaker’s possibilities in the visual medium. The important narrative changes can be based on this, but also through Studio Ghibli’s choice to emphasize the war as a central part of the story. This paper can give light to the changes that take place when a work is being adapted into a different medium.

Abstract:
Hur har konstnärer skildrat barn utifrån vem de var och när de levde? Min undersökning begränsar sig till sex målningar i tre rum på Drottningholms slott. Tidsmässigt handlar det om nästan hundra år, från sent 1600-tal till sent 1700-tal. Jag har studerat hur David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Gustaf Lundberg, Johan Pasch och Carle van Loo skildrat kungliga barn, anonyma barn, och i ett fall konstnärens egen dotter. Uppsatsen har en historisk och idéhistorisk kontext, men jag tar även in den rumsliga miljön som konstverken är en del av samt beställarrollen. Konstverkens ikonografi har varit viktig, liksom den generella synen på barnen för tiden. Skönhets- och karaktärsideal har varit en annan ingång. Genom att ingående studera den inneboende symboliken i dessa gestaltningar av barn, som delar i stora allegoriska målningar och som regelrätta porträtt, har jag belyst likheter och skillnader över tiden. Min viktigaste källa är konstverken i sig, som jag närgånget studerat på plats. Jag har också haft nytta av tidigare forskning inom ämnet, så som Karin Sidéns avhandling om barnporträtt i svensk stormaktstid, Allan Ellenius forskning om Ehrenstrahls bildidéer samt Anne Banérs texter om synen på barndomen. Jag har velat bidra med mer djupgående analyser av barnen som förekommer i konsten på Drottningholm, som därmed blir del av hela slottets inredningstankar och illustrerar ett helhetskoncept, men utifrån rum med olika funktioner och utifrån olika tidsepoker. En röd tråd i uppsatsen är graden av realism. Som bland andra Ellenius påpekat ökade graden av realism ju längre ned på samhällsstegen som den avbildade stod, vilket gäller barn såväl som vuxna. Med detta som utgångspunkt har jag fäst särskild vikt vid ett anonymt barn som jag inte hittat något skrivet om tidigare. Detta kan bero på att mycket av forskningen om Ehrenstrahls allegorier utgått från hans egna beskrivningar och han säger ingenting om detta barn utöver att det håller i en sköld. Jag argumenterar för att barnet, som är målat mer omsorgsfullt och realistiskt än de flesta andra i hans allegorier, är målat efter levande modell. Min hypotes, som jag sökt bevis för, men som fortfarande inte kan styrkas till fullo, är att denna modell var Ehrenstrahls barnbarn Karl Wattrang.

An X band dual polarized slotted waveguide antenna array is designed with very high polarization purity for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Horizontally polarized radiators are designed using a novel non-inclined edge wall slots whereas the vertically polarized slots are implemented using broad wall slots opened on baffled single ridge rectangular waveguides. Electromagnetic model based on an infinite array unit cell approach is introduced to characterize the slots used in the array. 20 by 10 element planar array of these slots is manufactured and radiation fields are measured. The measurement results of this array are in very good accordance with the simulation results. The dual polarized antenna possesses a low sidelobe level of -35 dB and is able to scan a sector of ±
35 degrees in elevation. It also has a usable bandwidth of 600 MHz.

Abstract:
The work described by this thesis is a comparison of pore opening geometry for true surface microfilters. True surface microfilters can be thought of as very fine sieves, with pore sizes less than 10 microns. All other types of so-called microfiltration membranes do not rely on sieving, but obtain their pore retention rating by particle collection mechanisms similar to depth filters. Particle deposition within such microfilters results in permeate flow rate dechne, for a fixed pressure filtration, or pressure drop rise, for a fixed rate filtration. The true surface microfilter pore geometnes considered were circular and slotted, and microfilters with filtering dimension of less than 10 microns were used. The slotted pore microfilters are not commercially available and had to be made in the laboratory as part of this study. The technique used was to plate nickel onto an existing substrate, thereby reducing the pore dimension until It was within the microfiltration range. The plating was by electroless nickel solution and not by galvanic means. Significant development of the electroless platmg technique led ultimately to the successful manufacture of process scale slotted surface microfilters.

Abstract:
The heat dissipation of current busbur in power plant is one of the important issues in power transmission, usually through the cylinder slotted to strengthen heat dissipation. Natural convection in a cylinder with an internal slotted annulus is the computational model abstracted from it. Natural convection in a cylinder with an concentric slotted annulus is concerned. Attention is focused on the effects of different slotted sizes on natural convection. Numerical results showed that, the equivalent thermal conductivity increases with the increase of Rayleigh number. At high Ra, the system heat transfer exhibit rich nonlinear characteristics. When the slotted direction or the slotted degree changed, it would have an important impact on the flow and heat transfer in the system, and also influence the related nonlinear characteristics.

Numerically simulate natural convection heat transfer in the slotted circle within a round in different structure sizes, and study the natural convection heat transfer and nonlinear characteristics according to the numerical results. Verified by numerical calculation, the numerical results coincide with the same working conditions experimental results of the existing literature. Studying natural convection heat transfer in the horizontal slotted round within the circle, with the increase of Ra, it is possible to obtain a stable solution, periodically oscillating solutions, non-periodic oscillation solution, ultimately chaos; on the same slotted direction, the average equivalent thermal conductivity Keqs with the increase of Ra increases, and Keqs is maximum in the vertical direction, so the convective heat transfer is the strongest. when Ra exceeds a critical value, numerical results begin to oscillate, such as the static bifurcation and periodic oscillation phenomenon, and this critical value is associated with slotted direction, The largest in vertical direction, and get the minimum in 45°. For numerical analysis of slotted circle within closed circle under the different radius ratios. The annular space pace is narrower, thermal fluid is more in slotted circle, internal isotherm closer to the horizontal, the worse of heat transfer. But once the radius ratio greater than 2.0, and then increase the radius ratio Keq is not increased too much.

Abstract:
In this paper, a slotted tip structure is experimentally analyzed. A wind turbine with three blades, of which the radius is 301.74mm, is investigated by the PIV method. Each wind turbine blade is formed with a slots system comprising four internal tube members embedded in the blade. The inlets of the internal tube member are located at the leading edge of the blade and form an inlet array. The outlets are located at the blade tip face and form an outlet array. The near wake flow field of the wind turbine with slotted tip and without slotted tip are both measured. Velocity field of near wake region and clear images of the tip vortex are captured under different wake ages. The experimental results show that the radius of the tip vortex core is enlarged by the slotted tip at any wake age compared with that of original wind turbine. Moreover, the diffusion process of the tip vortex is accelerated by the slotted tip which lead to the disappearance of the tip vortex occurs at smaller wake age. The strength of the tip vortex is also reduced indicating that the flow field in the near wake of wind turbine is improved. The experimental data are further analyzed with the vortex core model to reveal the flow mechanism of this kind of flow control method. The turbulence coefficient of the vortex core model for wind turbine is obtained from the experimental data of the wind turbine with and without slotted tip. It shows that the slotted tip increases the turbulence strength in the tip vortex core by importing airflow into the tip vortex core during its initial generation stage, which leads to the reduction of the tip vortex strength. Therefore, it is promising that the slotted tip can be used to weaken the vorticity and accelerate the diffusion of the tip vortex which would improve the problem caused by the tip vortex.

Abstract:
The feasibility of a multiphase flow meter utilizing closely coupled slotted orifice and swirl flow meters along with an impedance sensor is investigated. The slotted flow meter has been shown to exhibit well behaved response curves to two phase flow mixtures with the pressure difference monotonically increasing with mixture density and flow rate. It has been determined to have less than 1% uncertainty in determining the flow rate if the density of the fluid is known. Flow visualizations have shown that the slotted orifice is a very good mixing device as well producing a homogenous mixture for several pipe diameters downstream of the plate. This characteristic is utilized to provide a homogeneous mixture at the inlet to the swirl meter. This is possible since the slotted orifice is relatively insensitive to upstream and downstream flow disturbances. The swirl meter has been shown to indicate decreased flow rate as the mixture density increases which is opposite to the slotted orifice making the solution of the two meter outputs to obtain density and flow rate feasible. Additional instrumentation is included. Between the slotted orifice and swirl meter where the flow is homogenous a custom manufactured electrical impedance sensor is installed and monitored. This array of instrumentation will provide three independent measurements which are evaluated to determine which system of equations are robust enough to provide accurate density and flow rate measurement over a wide range of gas volume fractions using a very compact system.

A slotted pocket gas damper seal has been experimentally evaluated on a flexible rotor test rig for rotor vibration reduction properties. For unbalance response tests, the experiments were conducted at several seal inlet pressures out to 14.5 bar (210 psia), and the rotor speed ranged up to 8,000 rpm, which was well above the damped first critical speed of the flexible rotor. The influence of gas pre-swirl and seal eccentricity on the seal dynamic performance was investigated in the tests. Experimental results showed that the slotted pocket damper seal provided high positive damping and small positive stiffness in the tested pressure range. Comparisons of seal dynamic characteristics and leakage were made between the slotted pocket damper seal and a conventional pocket damper seal tested previously on the same test stand. The stability characteristics of the slotted pocket gas damper seal were also experimentally evaluated at 12,000 rpm, the maximum operating speed of this test rig. Test conditions involved three inlet pressures up to 20.7 bar (300 psia) and intentional pre-swirl gas flows. Experimental results demonstrated that the slotted pocket damper seal was rotordynamically stable at high speeds without any subsynchronous vibration in the frequency spectrum measured using proximity probes for the test rotor.

In the previous studies of slotted flow meters, the repeatibility and reproducibility were studied under different flow conditions and different configurations. In accordance with these work, the present study examines the affects of the distance between the slotted plate. The preset 5D distance is expanded to the 10D. The flow coefficient, KY, the pressure drop, and the uncertainty analysis dependence upon this change is examined. There are definite changes in the results between the 5D distance and the 10D distance. As a base line, the flow coefficient, KY, showed 0.8% to 2% difference between the 5D and the 10D distance case. Depending upon the upstream flow conditions, the reproducibility of the slotted flow meter was affected. The pressure drop increased as the upstream Reynolds number increases. The result from the analysis of a water cut meter mounted downstream of a slotted flow meter showed that there are definitive relationships between the output of the water cut meter and the parameters of the flow.

Geometric parameter design is an important stage in any product design. For example, by varying any of its geometric parameters, a slotted disc spring will show various defined nonlinear load-displacement behaviors. Therefore, these geometric parameters must be precisely designed to ensure the output spring design possesses a nonlinear load-displacement behavior that satisfies particular nonlinear criteria. More importantly, various engineering designs benefit from nonlinear behavior in order to meet certain engineering design requirements. Since each nonlinear spring application requires a unique load-displacement function, the spring geometric parameters must be precisely custom designed. However, there is no specific algorithm available to calculate such geometric design parameterization. The aim of this study is to propose a generalized algorithm for a slotted disc spring geometric design that ensures the output design exhibits identical load-displacement function with any prescribed one. A predicted geometric design algorithm for a slotted disc spring is proposed in this study. The design is characterized by a prescribed load-displacement function obtained from numerical model in the previous literature. The key feature of our proposed algorithm is that, the identified meeting point, which is defined from a prescribed function, can be used as a target point to match the predicted function with the prescribed function. Our proposed algorithm manipulates the slope characteristics of the established slotted disc spring numerical formulation to tune the predicted nonlinear function. This enables a geometric parameter design to be achieved. Improvements to the proposed geometric parameters were done by searching the best combination of optimum variables that produce minimum least mean square error between the prescribed and proposed nonlinear functions. The obtained numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to parameterize the geometric parameters for a slotted disc spring design.

Abstract:
Flow control using a blade which is slotted from pressure surface to suction surface was studied. The effects of a slotted blade for a compressor airfoil at low Reynolds numbers were studied with the help of a linear cascade wind tunnel and a state-of-the-art multi-block flow solver. Measurements were taken in a low-speed linear cascade. The compressor cascade with a steady inflow was examined based on blade chord length at low Reynolds numbers. The experimental results showed that the slotted blade could effectively reduce the loss wake width and depth. The maximum relative reduction of wake width and depth were 48% and 45%, respectively. The numerical results at Reynolds numbers ranging from 1.2×105 to 2.1×105 showed that the airfoil aerodynamics of cascade are substantially improved by a slotted blade within this Reynolds number regime. This yields less total pressure loss and a greater flow turning angle and static pressure rise. The extensive numerical results showed that the slot inlet could capture the high pressure flow from the pressure surface, bring it into the slot, and discharge it onto the suction surface of the blade. This then blows off the boundary layer separation flow and accelerates the low energy flow, reducing the size of the separation region, or even eliminating the separation entirely on the trailing edge of blade.
