Abstract:
Studien analyserar Diana Wynne Jones bok Det levande slottet (2005) och Studio Ghiblis film med samma titel (2004) i syfte att undersöka vilka förändringar som skett i övergången från bok till film. Delarna som undersöks är narrationen, karaktärerna, värderingar och budskap samt ifall filmen anpassats till japanska förhållanden och/eller japansk publik. Detta görs genom en komparativ metod. Studien diskuterar även möjligheten att använda något av verken i undervisning för årskurserna F–3. Resultatet visar att skillnaderna mellan bok och film är så stora att det är svårt att endast tala om en filmadaptation och att det därför är bättre att använda begreppet transformation. Även om filmen fortfarande har ett gemensamt tema med boken – alla ska kunna accepteras för den de är – har förändringarna och det nya temat krig tagit överhanden och påverkat narrationen, budskap, värderingar och karaktärer. I filmen finns inga förändringar som pekar på specifik anpassning till japansk publik, men genom filmens teckningar är det ändå tydligt att filmens regissör Hayao Miyazaki ingår i en japansk kultur. Resultatet visar dessutom problematik kring bokens användning i årskurserna F–3, men att det trots detta finns möjligheter att använda både den och filmen för att diskutera värden och budskap i de lägre årskurserna.

Abstract:
Optical biosensors are increasingly being considered for lab-on-a-chip applications due to their benefits such as small size, biocompatibility, passive behaviour and lack of the need for fluorescent labels. The light guiding mechanisms used by many of them result in poor overlap of the optical field with the target molecules, reducing the maximum sensitivity achievable. This thesis presents a new platform for optical biosensors, namely slotted photonic crystals, which engender higher sensitivities due to their ability to confine, spatially and temporally, the peak of optical mode within the analyte itself. Loss measurements showed values comparable to standard photonic crystals, confirming their ability to be used in real devices. A novel resonant coupler was designed, simulated, and experimentally tested, and was found to perform better than other solutions within the literature. Combining with cavities, microfluidics and biological functionalization allowed proof-of-principle demonstrations of protein binding to be carried out. High sensitivities were observed in smaller structures than most competing devices in the literature. Initial tests with cellular material for real applications was also performed, and shown to be of promise. In addition, groundwork to make an integrated device that includes the spectrometer function was also carried out showing that slotted photonic crystals themselves can be used for on-chip wavelength specific filtering and spectroscopy, whilst gas-free microvalves for automation were also developed. This body of work presents slotted photonic crystals as a realistic platform for complete on-chip biosensing; addressing key design, performance and application issues, whilst also opening up exciting new ideas for future study.

Abstract:
Laser cleaning is a non contact, highly controllable process for the removal of contaminants from a surface with minimum or no damage to the substrate material. Laser cleaning has been applied mainly on flat and curved surfaces. Little is known on the phenomena and feasibility of laser cleaning of slotted structures. Slots are common structures in engineering, and can be found in many components. In this PhD work, the feasibility of laser cleaning of alpha case on flat titanium alloy surfaces was initially explored, and then an investigation was made on the use of a pulsed laser for the cleaning of micro to macro slots in silicon and metallic materials. The effects of laser processing parameters on the contaminant removal from these slots were experimentally studied. Laser cleaning thresholds and cleanliness was examined. Meanwhile, finite element modelling (FEM) and time domain finite difference modelling techniques were used to simulate the processes involved to aid the understanding of the technique for process optimisation. The experiments were undertaken to verify if such models are able to accurately predict the cleaning thresholds. The surface and sub-surface characteristics before and after laser cleaning were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been shown that the slot structure and its material properties were not damaged or changed by laser cleaning process. A novel contribution is that surface morphology after the laser ablation could be used as a diagnostic method to indentify the presence of alpha case and measure its thickness due to the specific characteristics of the surface roughness and generated cracks on the ablated surface after laser irradiation. Besides, it has been found that an axial beam which propagates into the narrow slots can successfully clean the tiny particles on the slot sidewalls whose width ranges from 3.5 mm to 13mm. These phenomena had never been reported before.

Industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN) is an application area of WSN used in industrial process monitoring and control with strict time and reliability requirement. WirelessHART standard is the first international standard for IWSN approved by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This is worthwhile to implement this standard on simulator platform. Based on the study of WirelessHART standard, this thesis set up a primary implementation of the MAC layer of WirelessHART standard. To our best knowledge, this is the first comprehensive implementation of WirelessHART using OPNET simulator. The implementation has been evaluated rational. And some improvement of current implementation and standard have also been proposed and implemented. Flexible dedicated slot assignment has also been proposed to reduce the packet loss rate caused by influences of the physical channel.

Abstract:
Research into how one can create architecture that will last beyond the foreseeable future. Part ONE is research based, building up a manifesto based on; structural integrity, aesthetic longevity, programmatic adaptability and cultural relevance. The research is based on observing historical architecture from the past 2,000 years, both looking into how the buildings have stood the test of time physically, but also why they might remain attractive, analysing the comings and goings of beauty through time. The research is compiled and represented through suggested ideal ways of designing each of the architectural elements, such as the wall, window, door, threshold or stair. Part TWO applies the research to a case study; the extension and renovation of the Royal Palace in Stockholm, in order to turn the residence into a public building, with the extension functioning as a connection point between the city landscape and the palace beyond. The design has no specific programme other than allowing the palace complex to be used by the public, as they wish, for the future to come. A large part of the design is essentially made up of sculptural urban landscaping, colonnaded and vaulted walkways both interacting with the waterfront, and bringing the public up to the level of the palace which today stands behind tall walls. Whilst internally the new building functions as an entrance hall with necessary facilities, and creates a route into the existing palace.

Abstract:
This study is an adaptation analysis focusing on character portrayals in Studio Ghibli’s film Howl’s moving castle, which is based on a book of the same name, written by Diana Wynne Jones. Both the film and the book are discussed and analyzed to find differences and similarities between the two. The purpose of the paper is to identify the changes that have been made to the film adaptation in the form of characterizations. Through this study I have shown the media specific differences that have contributed to changes but also reported important similarities. The relationships between the characters have changed a lot to the film adaptation, many emotions appear more open in the film than they did in the book. Media specific differences lie behind much of this, through the filmmaker’s possibilities in the visual medium. The important narrative changes can be based on this, but also through Studio Ghibli’s choice to emphasize the war as a central part of the story. This paper can give light to the changes that take place when a work is being adapted into a different medium.

Abstract:
Hur har konstnärer skildrat barn utifrån vem de var och när de levde? Min undersökning begränsar sig till sex målningar i tre rum på Drottningholms slott. Tidsmässigt handlar det om nästan hundra år, från sent 1600-tal till sent 1700-tal. Jag har studerat hur David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Gustaf Lundberg, Johan Pasch och Carle van Loo skildrat kungliga barn, anonyma barn, och i ett fall konstnärens egen dotter. Uppsatsen har en historisk och idéhistorisk kontext, men jag tar även in den rumsliga miljön som konstverken är en del av samt beställarrollen. Konstverkens ikonografi har varit viktig, liksom den generella synen på barnen för tiden. Skönhets- och karaktärsideal har varit en annan ingång. Genom att ingående studera den inneboende symboliken i dessa gestaltningar av barn, som delar i stora allegoriska målningar och som regelrätta porträtt, har jag belyst likheter och skillnader över tiden. Min viktigaste källa är konstverken i sig, som jag närgånget studerat på plats. Jag har också haft nytta av tidigare forskning inom ämnet, så som Karin Sidéns avhandling om barnporträtt i svensk stormaktstid, Allan Ellenius forskning om Ehrenstrahls bildidéer samt Anne Banérs texter om synen på barndomen. Jag har velat bidra med mer djupgående analyser av barnen som förekommer i konsten på Drottningholm, som därmed blir del av hela slottets inredningstankar och illustrerar ett helhetskoncept, men utifrån rum med olika funktioner och utifrån olika tidsepoker. En röd tråd i uppsatsen är graden av realism. Som bland andra Ellenius påpekat ökade graden av realism ju längre ned på samhällsstegen som den avbildade stod, vilket gäller barn såväl som vuxna. Med detta som utgångspunkt har jag fäst särskild vikt vid ett anonymt barn som jag inte hittat något skrivet om tidigare. Detta kan bero på att mycket av forskningen om Ehrenstrahls allegorier utgått från hans egna beskrivningar och han säger ingenting om detta barn utöver att det håller i en sköld. Jag argumenterar för att barnet, som är målat mer omsorgsfullt och realistiskt än de flesta andra i hans allegorier, är målat efter levande modell. Min hypotes, som jag sökt bevis för, men som fortfarande inte kan styrkas till fullo, är att denna modell var Ehrenstrahls barnbarn Karl Wattrang.

An X band dual polarized slotted waveguide antenna array is designed with very high polarization purity for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Horizontally polarized radiators are designed using a novel non-inclined edge wall slots whereas the vertically polarized slots are implemented using broad wall slots opened on baffled single ridge rectangular waveguides. Electromagnetic model based on an infinite array unit cell approach is introduced to characterize the slots used in the array. 20 by 10 element planar array of these slots is manufactured and radiation fields are measured. The measurement results of this array are in very good accordance with the simulation results. The dual polarized antenna possesses a low sidelobe level of -35 dB and is able to scan a sector of ±
35 degrees in elevation. It also has a usable bandwidth of 600 MHz.

Abstract:
The work described by this thesis is a comparison of pore opening geometry for true surface microfilters. True surface microfilters can be thought of as very fine sieves, with pore sizes less than 10 microns. All other types of so-called microfiltration membranes do not rely on sieving, but obtain their pore retention rating by particle collection mechanisms similar to depth filters. Particle deposition within such microfilters results in permeate flow rate dechne, for a fixed pressure filtration, or pressure drop rise, for a fixed rate filtration. The true surface microfilter pore geometnes considered were circular and slotted, and microfilters with filtering dimension of less than 10 microns were used. The slotted pore microfilters are not commercially available and had to be made in the laboratory as part of this study. The technique used was to plate nickel onto an existing substrate, thereby reducing the pore dimension until It was within the microfiltration range. The plating was by electroless nickel solution and not by galvanic means. Significant development of the electroless platmg technique led ultimately to the successful manufacture of process scale slotted surface microfilters.

Abstract:
Multistatic radar system provides a great number of advantages over monostatic radar systems via exploitation of geometrical diversity which gives the ability to view targets from multiple perspectives. These advantages include target signature enhancement, improved detection, higher immunity against countermeasures and provide more information about targets and hence enhance targets classification. Furthermore, the passive receive-only nodes are more compact, hence lighter weight, and can be mounted on UAV which leads to a great advantage to surveillance systems and military applications. Over the last two decades, University College London and the University of Cape Town have collaborated to develop multistatic radar systems. This collaboration resulted in developing an S-band system (NetRAD). Recently, a new version of the system (NeXtRAD) that operates in X and L bands has been developed. The NeXtRAD system has two channels at X-band which allows for receiving fully polarimetric data from clutter and targets utilising dual-polarised antenna. The first addressed task of this work was to investigate all possible antenna candidates to be used for the NeXtRAD system. Resonant SWGAA was chosen among the antenna options as it fit best all desired criteria and due to its relative design simplicity, high power-handling capabilities and cost-effective fabrication. The SWGAA can be designed to be a dual-polarised antenna. The procedures for designing a low sidelobe level (SLL) S-band SWGAA are demonstrated in this work. The azimuth beamwidth of a SWGAA is controlled by the number of slots carved in a waveguide. Eight slots distributed around the centre-line of waveguide broad wall found to meet the desired beamwidth. Four SWGAAs were designed and fabricated. The anechoic chamber measurements of each SWGAA showed excellent agreement with the simulation results. A single element SWGAA has a fan elevation beamwidth. This beamwidth has to be narrowed to achieve the desired width. Stacking identically designed SWGAAs was found to be an effective and simple method to narrow the antenna elevation beamwidth. The four SWGAAs were stacked on top of each other. The mitigation of mutual coupling between stacked SWGAAs was investigated. A cost-effective method of inserting dielectric sheets between stacked SWGAAs helped in mitigating the mutual coupling and assist in arriving at the desired antenna performance. The stacked SWGAAs shows a very good performance with very low SLL and high polarisation purity (low cross-polarisation level). The stacked SWGAAs antenna performance was validated in field experiments and compared to similar characteristics antenna. The SWGAA shows better performance compared to the other antenna. A new simple and efficient design of a dual-polarised SWGAA by having two similar set of stacked waveguides with one set rotated by 90ᵒ relative to the other one was proposed. Two designs with two different elevation beamwidths were simulated. Both designs showed excellent performance that met all the desired criteria. The same designs and tests procedures were followed in designing and testing the X-band SWGAA and simulating dual-polarised antennas. No field experiments were performed using this antenna as the NeXtRAD system is based at UCT and no access to any other X-band radar system at UCL.

Abstract:
I mitt examensarbete hade jag i uppdrag att visualisera Fiholms slott som planerades att byggas under 1600-talet. Denna byggnation blev dock aldrig av, det enda spår som finns av själva byggnaden är tre planritningar som arkitekt Simon De la Vallée ritade år 1640. Hur kan det då ha sett ut? Tidigare forskning visar att visualiseringar av historiska objekt/platser kan medföra att betraktaren upplever bilden som en sanning, osäkerheten glöms bort och bilden överlever teorin bakom, det vill säga hur beslut om representationen fattades. Detta arbete undersöker hur trovärdighet/ tillförlitlighet kan skapas i en bild och om detta kan synliggöras för betraktaren. Mitt uppdrag bestod i att för besökare på en utställning visualisera ett slott från 1600-talet som aldrig blev byggt. För att komma fram till hur slottet kunde ha sett ut samt vilken teknik, bildmanér och betraktningsvinkel som lämpar sig bäst i detta sammanhang har jag utgått ifrån tidigare forskning, teorier samt egna empiriska studier. Slutsatsen av detta arbete är att en grundlig förstudie av samtida byggnader, arkitektur och dess kontext inklusive besök och dokumentation av relevanta platser är av stor vikt för att skapa en trovärdig visualisering. Att använda sig av 3D-modeller kan öka förståelsen för byggnadens proportioner i helhet samt att studera lämplig betraktningsvinkel. Att på något sätt synliggöra teorin bakom en historisk visualisering för betraktaren är att föredra för att hen skall kunna få större insikt i bilden.

Photonics is a technology capable of supporting very high bit-rates of data. However, with the current state of photonic technologies logic and memory functions are very difficult to implement in the photonic domain. In photonic star networks using time division multiplexing (such as the Agile All Photonic Network), timeslots from the edges of the network have to arrive at the star point at exactly the same instant to be switched because they cannot be buffered in the photonic domain. The switching requires that the time at which the timeslots are transmitted must be coordinated and tightly controlled. This thesis addresses methods of synchronizing the components at the edge of the network to compensate for heterogeneous propagation delays between the edges and the star point. Different methods of providing this compensation are described and assessed in terms of their capabilities and performance.

A key issue in the Agile All-Photonic Networks is the centralized scheduling method and the coordination between edge nodes and the core switching node. The focus of this thesis is to propose and evaluate efficient scheduling algorithms for time-slot based AAPN. Assuming some buffering at the edge nodes, we use a two-layer network topology design to simulate the network performance. The scheduling schemes proposed in this thesis are aimed at avoiding contention and improving bandwidth utilization. We employ a simple reservation scheme that guarantees time-slot deliveries. In addition, we implement this time-slot scheduling algorithm in the OPNET simulation environment to evaluate its performance in various scenarios.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The application of artificial neural networks to microwave circuits is investigated. A neural network model is developed for two parallel waveguides coupled by a longitudinal slot in the common broad wall. Training data is generated through a moment method solution of the integral equations that describe the structure. A systematic investigation of training options is carried out and the development of the model is described in detail. The model is evaluated and compared with an Adaptive Sampling Interpolation (ASI) Technique. The neural network is found to be less accurate than the ASI Technique at a much greater expense of development time and required user supervision.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die toepassing van neurale netwerke op mikrogolfbane is ondersoek. In Neurale netwerk-model is ontwikkel vir twee parallelle golfleiers met longitudinale gleufkoppeling in die gemeenskaplike bree wand. Data vir die opleiding van die netwerke is verkry deur In momentmetode-oplossing van die integraalvergelykings wat die struktuur beskryf. Verskillende ontwerpsopsies vir die netwerke is stelselmatig ondersoek en die ontwikkelingsproses van die netwerk is volledig beskryf. Die model is geevalueer en vergelyk met In Aanpasbare Monstering Interpolasietegniek (AMI). Daar is gevind dat die neurale netwerk minder akkuraat is as die AMI terwyl die koste aan ontwikkelingstyd en gebruikerstoesig hoer is.

Abstract:
This study looks upon the castles in Sweden that have transformed from private residence to running a hotel business on the premises. The focus of the study lies in the differences and similarities of the segmentation and marketing aspects of the hotel business of the castles compared between the different counties where they are located. Conducting interviews based on a questionnaire the scientist was able to get responses from 22 castles operating with as hotels out of a total number of 28 such castles in Sweden. The study shows that the seasonal changes in bookings vary both with the type of customer segmentation the castles have chosen and the geographical location of the castles. The main seasonal changes for the majority of the castles fall in line with the hotel business as a whole in Sweden.

Det är allt från nöjesparker och skidanläggningar till natursköna områden och kulturhistoriska byggnader. Deras gemensamma nämnare är att de lockar till sig ett stort antal människor. Besöksmål har olika attraktionskrafter som attraherar turister. Människor reser bland annat för att nå personlig utveckling, antingen genom rekreation, kunskapande eller genom att aktivera kroppen. Den viktigaste attraktionskraften hos topplistans attraktioner är att de ligger i en stor stad. Häften av topplistans attraktioner ligger i någon av Sveriges största städer. I stora städer finns många målgrupper, ett stort utbud och bra kommunikationer. Kalmar Slott ligger inte i en stor stad men i en region som under sommarmånaderna drar många besökare till omgivningen. Verksamhetsutveckling är en betydande faktor för att fortsätta dra många turister till attraktionen. Kalmar Slott är inne i en mognadsfas, därför har en grupp intressenter tagit fram en utvecklingsplan för slottet. När slottets verksamheter ska utvecklas är det viktigt att slottets varumärke tas i beaktning. Kalmar Slotts varumärke står för autenticitet och kvalitet och visar vad turister kan förvänta sig av besöket. Om Kalmar Slott erbjuder nya produkter med god kvalitet för fler målgrupper har Kalmar Slott en möjlighet att öka sin attraktionskraft.

Förlorar platsen sin identitet när ingen besöker den? Kan platsen besitta två helt olika identiteter, en för sommar och en för vinter? Jag finner att Mariefred kännetecknas av en form av otydlighet i dess identitet, där den inte kan bestämma sig för vilken sida att sätta ner foten på.Antigen lever den vidare i det förgångna,i att anpassa sig för den tillfälliga besökaren eller tar det steget att göra något för sig själv, där dess identitet inte styrs av turism. Jag tänker mig en plats som inte försöker anpassa sig efter den idylliska prägeln som medel för att behaga besökare. En plats som vågar bryta sig loss från Gripsholm slotts långvarade grepp om Mariefred och dess dominerande skugga.  I ett försök att identifiera de historiska aspekterna, inte för sentimentala orsaker eller historiska värden, utan som inspiration och identitetsskapande element,ska den tillagda byggnaden bidra till framtiden genom att representera sin egna tid och på så sätt erhålla lika mycket tyngd som det existerande.
Does a place lose its identity when no one visits it? Can a place posses two completely different identities, one for summer and one for winter? I find that Mariefred is characterized by a form of ambiguity in its identity, where it can’t decide which direction to move forward in. Either it lives on in its past, where it’s continually adapting to the occasional visitor, or the city stops being a museum oriented society, where the dialog with the past has stagnated and instead chooses a path where its identity is no longer controlled by tourism. I think of Mariefred as a place that doesn’t have try to adapt to the idyllic touch as a mean to please the visitors, a place that dares to break away from Gripsholm Castle long-lasting grip and its dominant shade. In an attempt to identify the historical aspects, not for sentimental reasons or historical value, but as the inspiration and identity creating elements,should the added building contribute to the future by representing its own time and thus obtaining as much weight as the existing ones.

This study examines images based on a semiotic text analysis as a symbol of Disney Princess Elsa from Frozen 2 and Cinderella. The study examines how the representation of the Disney princess is made on the basis of gender, sexuality and race. The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how the representation of the Disney princess in popular culture may have changed and, in any case, to investigate why. The study concludes that the representation of the Disney princess on one side has changed based on gender and sexuality, but the other has not changed as much when it comes to the representation of race and female whiteness.

Slotted waveguide array (SWGA) antennas find application in systems which require planarity, low profile, high power handling capabilities such as radars. In this thesis, a planar, low sidelobe, phased array antenna, capable of electronically beam scanning in E-plane is designed, manufactured and measured. In the design, slot characterization is done with HFSS and by measurements, and mutual coupling between slots are calculated analytically. A MATLAB code is developed for the synthesis of the SWGA antenna. Grating lobe problem in the scanning array, which is caused by the slot positions, is solved using baffles on the array. A high power feeding section for the planar array, having an amplitude tapering to get low sidelobes is also designed using a corrugated E-plane sectoral horn. The power divider is designed analytically, and simulated and optimized with HFSS.

Schedulers in optical switches are still electronic, the performance of these units has a significant impact on the performance of the network and could form a bottleneck in high speed networks, such as AAPN. Four time-slotted scheduling algorithms are investigated in this study, PIM, iSlip, PHM and Adapted-SRA. The study addresses the performance of AAPN for each of the algorithms, and evaluates the hardware complexity, estimating the running time of the algorithms. Performance measures were collected from an OPNET model, designed to emulate AAPN. Furthermore, hardware complexity and timing constraints were evaluated through hardware simulations, for iSlip, and through analysis for the rest of the algorithms. iSlip confirmed its feasibility by meeting the 10us timing constraint set by AAPN. The study revealed the superiority of iSlip and PHM over PIM and Adapted-SRA.

Abstract:
The problem of data transmission in a packet radio system with one central base station and a number of mobile/stationary terminals is addressed. More specifically, the effects of possible collisions between packets on the inbound channel are investigated. Schemes which can be used to improve the performance are studied. The use of capture to improve the performance of slotted ALOHA systems is discussed. For a power group division scheme proposed by Metzner in which a capture effect is artificially induced, it is shown that in the two power group case, the higher power packet needs only be able to tolerate interference from up to three lower power packets in order to realize most of the achievable improvement of the infinite capture model. The evaluation of the performance for more than two power groups is also considered. A packet radio system in which a capture effect exists due to the fact that mobiles will generally be at different distances from the base station is also investigated. A number of different capture and spatial distribution models are discussed. Methods for evaluating the probability [formula omitted] of successful reception when there are [formula omitted] contending transmitters are examined. It is shown that a generalized capture model can be used to estimate [formula omitted] for an example system which uses non-coherent frequency shift keying modulation. This model can be applied to other systems as well. In most practical systems, the mobiles cannot get arbitrarily close to the base station. The effects of this constraint on [formula omitted] is examined. The dependence of the capture probability for a test mobile on its distance from the base station is also analyzed. The use of multiple directional antennas and receivers in a slotted ALOHA system in which the signals from the different transmitters are received with more or less the same powers is analyzed. It is shown that the performance of the system can be substantially improved by using directional antennas and multiple receivers. Results indicate that fewer than five antennas per receiver are required in order to achieve most of the achievable performance. A finite population Markov model is used to evaluate the performance of a multi-antenna and receiver slotted ALOHA system in a mobile radio environment in which the signal power levels from different mobiles are no longer equal. The effects of three different antenna patterns, background noise and Rayleigh fading are studied. Here again, numerical results indicate that substantial gains are possible with the use of several antennas and receivers. It is also found that the dynamic behaviour of the system is improved. The selection of the antennas to be connected to the receivers becomes an issue if the number of receivers at the base station is less than the number of antennas . Four antenna selection schemes are compared for three different channel models, assuming an ideal antenna pattern. It is found that the scheme which selects the antennas with the largest received signal powers is nearly optimum. The effects of using a more practical non-ideal antenna pattern are also discussed.

The slotted plate flow meter has been widely tested as an obstruction flow meter during the past several years. It has been tested for both single-phase flows as well as for two-phase flows. Previous studies have revealed that the slotted plate flow meter is always better in performance and accuracy than the standard orifice plate flow meter. This study is primarily based on how a slotted plate responds to horizontal two-phase flow with air and water being used as the working fluids. The plates under consideration are those with beta ratios of 0.43 and 0.467. Experiments have been performed with six different configurations of the slotted plate test sections. The performances of the slotted plate flow meters will be compared to that of a standard orifice plate flow meter and then with a venturi. The effects of varying the upstream quality of the two-phase flow on the differential pressure and the coefficient of discharge of the slotted plates, the standard orifice plate and the venturi will be evaluated. Response characteristics at low differential pressures will be investigated. Tests for repeatability will be performed by studying the effects of the gas Reynolds number and the upstream quality on the differential pressure. The differential pressures across the slotted plates, the standard orifice plate and the venturi will be compared. Reproducibility will be evaluated by comparing the data obtained from all six different configurations. One of the main objectives of this study is to arrive at the best suitable procedure for accurately measuring the flow rate of two-phase flow using the slotted plate flow meter.

Overend et al [68] designed a viscometer to measure the viscosity of slurries that have a tendency to settle. This viscometer consists of a rotating ribbed rotor surrounded by a stationary slotted sleeve; this system is then placed eccentrically within an inclined rotating bowl. It, is claimed that this overcomes most of the difficulties encountered when attempting to obtain accurate measurements for these types of mixtures. If the mixture being sheared within the annulus does not represent the true composition of the slurry being, tested then the results are expected to be inaccurate. The presence of sediment at the bottom of the rotor or the formation of large masses of particles within the flow domain will affect the accuracy of the measurements obtained. This dissertation studies the amount of flow through the slotted sleeve and the region, or regions, of low shear rate within the flow domain. Assuming that end-effects are unimportant and that the slurries can be replaced by a single-phase fluid, three two-dimensional models are proposed. These models are designed to capture the large-slot construction of the sleeve and the, approximate, non-Newtonian behaviour of the slurries. The first two models solve analytically (using a regular perturbation scheme) and numerically (using a finite volume method) the moderate-and large-Reynolds-number flow, and the third model uses a finite volume method to study the flow patterns developed by pseudoplastic fluids. The results show that the mixing of the slurry is expected to be enhanced by moving the concentric system (i.e., the rotor and the slotted sleeve) close to the rotating bowl and using low to moderate speeds for the rotor and bowl. In addition, when the cylinders rotate in the same directions, two (counter-rotating) eddies are present within the flow domain; whereas, only one eddy (rotating counter-clockwise) is ++
present when the cylinders rotate in opposite directions. The presence of eddies in the former situation inhibits the flow through the sleeve; while, for moderate rotorspeeds, the flow through the sleeve is enhanced in the latter. When the slurry assumed pseudoplastic, we observe a region of low shear rate located near the dividing streamline present within the flow field. The distribution of shear rate within the flow field is shown to be affected by factors such as the rate of diffusion of the apparent viscosity and the value of the power law index. Therefore, this study suggests that for certain types of slurries, concentrations of particles exist within the domain and that the mixing of slurries can be impeded by the presence of eddies within the main flow field.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) exists two dominant modes including CPW and parallel plate modes (surface wave) with no cutoff frequency. The latter causes the power leakage into transverse direction, resulting in unexpected or even harmful coupling and crosstalk to the neighboring transmission lines or devices. By some methods, we can suppress the surface leaky wave, and the structure would become a good transmission line. It will be exhibited briefly in the article. Implementing the full wave analysis (Spectral Domain Analysis) on the CBCPW structure, we can acquire the information that the surface wave propagates along an particular angle relative to the main CPW line. So, we etch rectangular slots along the angle on the two side ground planes. Because the slots are separated one guided wavelength, they are excited in the same phase. If the long dimension of the slot is significantly longer than the wide one and approximately equals to a half of guided wavelength, the slots fed by CBCPW can radiate power efficiently. Finally, we derive a broadside radiation pattern. The antenna for direct broadcast from satellites (DBS) is operated at 12 GHz and asked for high gain and efficiency. We also make our antenna operate at this frequency. Finally, we have the measured radiation pattern with 25.98dBi and the measured bandwidth with 0.9GHz.

A novel design for pattern reconfigurable antenna, which uses pin diodes to control the pattern in the front or back side direction, is proposed. Focusing the radiation pattern to the front or back side can effectively increase the directivity of the antenna, and the transceiver signal from the front or back can also take advantage of the diode switching on or off effectively, which is easy to implement. This design can effectively reduce the large number of antennas used for RFID application in the detection conveyor belts. Thus it can not only reduce the space occupied, but also reduce the cost. The proposed pattern reconfigurable antenna is a slotted substrate integrated cavity antenna, in which lots of vias are used to form the dominant TE101 mode. To reduce the number of vias, L-shaped slotted substrate integrated cavity antenna operating its dominant TE (0.5, 0, 0.5) mode is also proposed. Moreover, the use of the L-shaped slot as a boundary condition not only can effectively reduce the number of vias but also can maintain the antenna gain and radiation efficiency. The operating mechanism and the detailed pattern reconfigurable antenna design are discussed in this thesis. Experimental and simulation results are presented to confirm the feasibility of the antenna design.
