Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is the verification of the buckling strength of the composite compression members which were made from high-strength materials. This thesis is divided into four main chapters which are interconnected. The first chapter summarizes the current state of the problem of the compression members. The basis of this part is the elementary theories and researches, the task of this text is attempted to understand and obtain normative procedures which are important for practical use. The second part deals with the theoretical analysis of composite column, mainly with the examination of the individual effects on the buckling strength. The result of the first and the second parts is analytical algebraic equations which determine the buckling strength of the member. The third part contains the numerical analysis, which leads to create a numerical model of the compression column. The numerical model is used for the verification of the theoretical analysis and for the investigation of the behaviour of the column loaded by axial force. The last part deals with the experimental verification of the previous analyses. There are tested various types of the composite columns, which were made of steel with a yield strength up to 455 MPa and of the concrete with a cube compression strength up to 102 MPa. Experimental results confirmed the high reliability of centrally loaded column and every tested columns failed by flexural buckling. The final step is evaluation and comparison of the results obtained from previous four parts. It was founded that design criteria for centrally loaded steel-concrete column are too conservative and design relationships doesn´t use the positive properties of high-strength materials for economic design.

Abstract:
The steel bandage is an economical and effective widely used method for strengthening RC columns. Diploma thesis reviews most common design proposals for the types of the bandage with directly loaded and not directly loaded steel angles. This work also includes a comparison of the different constitutive laws for confined concrete. In order to simulate real behaviour of strengthened structure the numerical analysis has been carried out using non-linear software ATENA. According to the European standards and adopted hypotheses the simplified analytical model has been derived to be able to calculate load-bearing capacity of a strengthened column under normal force and bending moment. The proposed model considers the contribution in confinement pressure caused by steel bandage and the contribution of directly loaded angles. In addition, the direct application on real frame structure has been performed.

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis deals with the strengthening of reinforced concrete columns by FRP fabric wrapping. Its aim is to describe the principles of confinement based on the analytical study, numerical simulations and the results of the experimental program. The description of the confinement philosophy is made with respect to the type of FRP material used. It was therefore possible to present a design process of confinement, which accurately predicts the behaviour of the confined columns. At the same time, some effects limiting the effect of confinement (e.g. the method of wrapping, the number of FRP fabric layers, the slenderness of the element, etc.) are included in the design. The dissertation also presents basic information about FRP material and its properties and gives an overview of design approaches of the FRP confined columns. The dissertation also pointing out the shortcomings of the design code ČSN EN 1992-1-1. The stated example highlights the significant variation in properties of confined concrete determined by selected approaches. This variation of properties complicates the design of this strengthening method. The experimental program was used to verify the basic principles of confinement and, through high columns, allowed a description of the behaviour in almost the whole range of interaction diagram. The conclusions of the work provide information on possible future research direction.

Cheng, Shueh-Hen. "Systematic synthesis of sloppy multicomponent separation sequences." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/76510.

Full text
Abstract:
An important process-design problem in multicomponent separations is separation sequencing, which is concerned with the selection of the best method and sequence for a separation system. Essentially all of the published work on this subject has been limited to high-recovery or sharp separations, in which each component to be separated appears in one and only one product stream. In industrial practice, however, it is often useful to permit components that are being separated to appear in two or more product streams. This type of separation results in products that have overlapping components and is called nonsharp or sloppy separations. The present work proposes and demonstrates a simple and practical approach to the systematic synthesis of sloppy multicomponent separation sequences. The task of synthesizing sloppy multicomponent separation sequences is inherently more complicated than that of synthesizing sharp separation sequences as identification of infeasible splits and stream splitting, and transformation of infeasible product sets into equivalent feasible product sets are examples of some difficult tasks involved. A successful synthesis strategy calls for the development of an effective and flexible framework for representing the synthesis problem and for analyzing the feasibility of component splits. In this thesis, we propose a "component assignment diagram (CAD)" for problem representation. It is shown that the use of a CAD allows the design engineer to consider many alternative solutions (or sequences) and eliminate all infeasible component splits. Further, a "separation specification table (SST)" is proposed for feasibility analysis. In particular, the use of an SST provides a means to : (i) properly define and specify key and nonkey components; (ii) quickly identify feasible and infeasible splits; (iii) effectively deal with fuel products with unmatched compo- nent specifications; and (iv) systematically consider sloppy separations with multiple split points. One difficult problem arising from the design of multicomponent distillation columns for sloppy separations is to appropriately specify the distributions of non-key components in both overhead and bottoms products. Despite the importance of these specifications, there is very little information available on this subject in the literature. This thesis reports the results from a comparative study of rigorous simulation and shortcut modeling of multicomponent distillation columns for sloppy separations. One objective was to obtain improved quantitative understanding and practical design insights into the characteristics of nonkey distributions through a shortcut modeling based upon the Fenske equation. One method proposed in this work for synthesizing sloppy multicomponent products is a heuristic method that involves a two-phase approach. The first phase is concerned with the feasibility analysis of splits pertinent to a CAD with the aid of an SST. The second phase is to specify systematically a subsequent split by applying heuristics, an activity that involves the sequential application of several "rank-ordered" heuristics. A unifying approach is proposed and demonstrated for the synthesis of sloppy multicomponent product sets. Its objective is to generate equally good initial separation schemes, featuring as many as three characteristically different sequences, including all-sharp, all-sloppy, and both sharp and sloppy (i.e., mixed separation). The proposed methods have been applied to a number of industrial separation problems. The results show that the new methods offer an extremely useful means for design engineers to generate a number of good initial sequences for obtaining sloppy multicomponent product sets prior to the ultimate separator optimization and heat integration.

Strengthening of reinforced columns confining by modern composite materials is effective method, allows quickly realized strengthening, without increase dimension of strengthening columns. Just like using reinforcing bars, is the mainly assumption for this method the multi-axis state tension and deducing confining pressure, which will increase strength of concrete. Improved of properties of confining concrete can be determined by using relationships, but there are considerably differences. This diploma theses, dealing with strengthening of circular reinforced columns confinement by external FRP fabric, compared approaches to design of reinforced concrete by confining and using the results of an analytical and numerical study to describe problem of confining concrete and compare factors influencing the final properties of the wrapped concrete.

Abstract:
“Slowly Rushing Absent Mind” explores themes of origin and nature through poems about family history and the natural world. This collection explains poetry through poetry by using different forms—the ghazal, the prose poem, the sonnet and the lyric, to convey an awareness of a deeper consciousness. These poems seek to fill the space in the air above your shoulder at which the retail clerk stares as he hands you your change and wishes you good day. “The world we know,” Foucault explains, “is a profusion of entangled events;” these poems are meant to hint at a true beginning, one at which only the most exhaustive of genealogical research could possibly arrive, yet one that is intrinsic in the details of everyday life.

Abstract:

District heating through the Swedish model has proven to be an environmental and financially beneficial solution for heating. By reusing energy resources that normally would be wasted con-tributes district heating in an effective way to the society’s energy consumption. Today district heating stands for more than fifty percent of the heat supply to the Swedish residential and service sector buildings. The long tradition in the area has generated knowledge and experiences that to-day are applicable to other countries that are looking for more environmental conscious heating alternatives.

The goal and purpose with this thesis has been to use the Swedish knowledge gained in district heating and apply them in United Kingdom, where district heating currently comprise a low pro-portion of the total energy supply. Through an analytical method, the effective width (ground area/trench length) has been calculated for several city districts in Halmstad and Göteborg. This material has been used to decide the distribution costs depending on different charicaristic num-bers and by so the capital cost for district heat distribution has been estimated for some selected city districts in Slough, United Kingdom.

The result indicates that the effective width can be constant, although this cannot be verified due to possible noice in the data. The capital cost for Slough has shown being slightly higher than the estimated capital cost in the Swedish city districts. During the work of this thesis, differences in the residential living structure in respective country have been identified, which can be a contrib-uting explaination to the higher capital cost in Slough. Though the results still supports the in-crease in usage of district heating in United Kingdom, if low cost heat is available.

Abstract:
An interacting particle system is constructed in which a collection of independent Brownian motions are subject to the rule that each pair of particles shall coalesce at a rate given formally by ). dLt , where {Lt : t ~ O} is the intersection local time of the pair. This interaction mechanism is referred to as slowly-coalescing, in contrast to the more standard model in which particles coalesce immediately on collision. The process is shown to be the weak limit of a sequence of coalescing symmeteric random walks on the lattice n-1Z. Our indirect argument exploits the existence of a dual Markov process at both the discrete and the continuous level. By endowing each of the slowly-coalescing Brownian particles with a weight we are able to establish a more intimate duality, the dual process being the solution of a stochastic heat equation driven by Fisher-Wright noise.

The presented paper deals with a theoretical analysis of the ultimate limit state. The results of experimental research carried out at the Institute of Metal and Timber Structures headed by Assoc. Prof. Karmazinová and Professor Melcher were applied. The geometrically and materially nonlinear solution based on the Timošenko’s solution is verified by the FEM model in the computer programme system ANSYS. The random influence of initial imperfections is taken into consideration. The FEM model also includes the influence of residual stress. In the parametric study, the influence of residual stress on the cross-section plastification is researched into, its influence on the load carrying capacity limit is, together with the influence of other imperfections, the subject of the stochastic analysis, applying the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS). Further on, the study proves a direct effect of the concrete part of the cross-section (combination of materials steel-concrete) on the decrease of load carrying capacity limit of the beam caused by influence of the residual stress of steel. With regard to the importance of time dependent phenomena of the concrete creep for the load carrying capacity, the studies given in the Ph.D. thesis are oriented in this respect. The parametric studies of the influence of the concrete creep having applied the Standard Eurocode 2 provide both a comparison of load carrying capacity limits when using common and high-strength concrete types, and also the variability of load carrying capacities. It follows from the comparison of the statistical analysis outputs according to the design reliability conditions of the Standard EN1990 and of the approach of Eurocode 4 that the Eurocode 4 can be recommended for dimensioning of this member type. According to the studies which we carried out, the design in compliance with Eurocode 4 can be evaluated as the reliable one. A larger set of experimental data is necessary to determine the economy.

In my Bachelor’s project I have attempted to explore and develop my relationship with the amorphous concept that is ”style”. As an illustrator I am sometimes torn between the idea of having a single recognizable style or to be experimental and to use aesthetics as a tool rather than a signifier of a personal brand.  The project takes the form of an anthology of weird fiction stories, where each of the eight stories are illustrated in different ways and with different materials. I have choses weird fiction as a subject not only because of personal interest but also because of the specific qualities of the genre. Weird fiction deals in uncertainties and mood, with a huge emphasis on how things are told, not what is told. In this project I have attempted to transfer some of these qualities to my illustration practice. Letting the contents of the image take the backseat to how it is drawn. Both as a method for producing the anthology but also to develop as an illustrator overall.

Full text
Abstract:

Knowledge about the current road slope can improve several applications in a heavy-duty vehicle such as predictive cruise control and automated gearbox control. In this thesis the possibility of estimating the road slope based on signals from a vehicles air suspension system has been studied. More specifically, the measurement consists of a pressure signal measuring the axle load, and a vertical distance sensor.

A variety of suspension systems can be mounted on a Scania truck. During this thesis, two discrete-time models based on two different rear axle air suspension systems have been proposed. The models use the effect of alternating axle load during a change in the road slope and the estimates are computed using an extended Kalman filter.

The first model is based on a rear axle suspension known as the 2-bellow system. This type of suspension is strongly affected by the driveshaft torque, which results in a behaviour where the rear end is pushed upwards and thus decreasing the rear axle load during uphill driving. A model was developed in order to compensate for this behaviour. Unfortunately, the estimates showed less promising results and all attempts to determine the error was unsuccessful.

The latter model is based on the 4-bellow system. This suspension system is not affected by the driveshaft torque and a less complex model could be derived. The experimental results indicated that road slope estimation was possible and with a fairly accurate result. However, more work is needed since the estimate is affected by road surface irregularities and since the algorithm requires knowledge about the vehicles mass and the location of the centre of gravity.

All the presented results have been estimated based on real data from a test track at Scania Technical Centre in Södertälje.

Chandarana, Upasna Piyush, and Upasna Piyush Chandarana. "Optimizing Geotechnical Risk Management Analysis." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625550.

Full text
Abstract:
Mines have an inherent risk of geotechnical failure in both rock excavations and tailings storage facilities. Geotechnical failure occurs when there is a combination of exceptionally large forces acting on a structure and/or low material strength resulting in the structure not withstanding a designed service load. The excavation of rocks can cause unintended rock mass movements. If the movement is monitored promptly, accidents, loss of ore reserves and equipment, loss of lives, and closure of the mine can be prevented. Mining companies routinely use deformation monitoring to manage the geotechnical risk associated with the mining process. The aim of this dissertation is to review the geotechnical risk management process to optimize the geotechnical risk management analysis. In order to perform a proper analysis of slope instability, understanding the importance as well as the limitations of any monitoring system is crucial. Due to the potential threat associated with slope stability, it has become the top priority in all risk management programs to predict the time of slope failure. Datasets from monitoring systems are used to perform slope failure analysis. Innovations in slope monitoring equipment in the recent years have made it possible to scan a broad rock face in a short period with sub-millimetric accuracy. Instruments like Slope Stability Radars (SSR) provide the quantitative data that is commonly used to perform risk management analysis. However, it is challenging to find a method that can provide an accurate time of failure predictions. Many studies in the recent past have attempted to predict the time of slope failure using the Inverse Velocity (IV) method, and to analyze the probability of a failure with the fuzzy neural networks. Various method investigated in this dissertation include: Minimum Inverse Velocity (MIV), Maximum Velocity (MV), Log Velocity (LV), Log Inverse Velocity (LIV), Spline Regression (SR) and Machine Learning (ML). Based on the results of these studies, the ML method has the highest rate of success in predicting the time of slope failures. The predictions provided by the ML showed ~86% improvement in the results in comparison to the traditional IV method and ~72% improvement when compared with the MIV method. The MIV method also performed well with ~75% improvement in the results in comparison to the traditional IV method. Overall, both the new proposed methods, ML and MIV, outperformed the traditional inverse velocity technique used for predicting slope failure.

The thesis explores the production of sound for animated film – its specifics as well as aspects of realization and of preparation and audio dramaturgy. It examines how they impact storytelling and the extent to which it is possible and useful to work with them from the very beginning of development of an animated film. The thesis also presents the practical and creative possibilities of cooperation between director and sound designer, alongside factors that may have a positive or negative influence in this regard. It draws on literary sources, interviews with the makers of animated films and knowledge acquired by the author in the field of directing and screenwriting of animated films. The thesis confirms the importance of the role of sound in animated film and its positive influence on the resulting quality of AV work (unless it has been omitted from the start of the filmmaking process). It summarizes the basic approaches that allow animators to work with sound in animated film as a fully-fledged narrative component.

Abstract:
A half of a brick is still a brick. Half a brick is a block. A building block, it is a thing of construction. Repeated, it makes a wall. Unnoticed, it is a stumbling block. It is mobile. When lobbed, it brings the construction down. This research draws on legacies of minimalism, as exemplified in processes of isolation and the repetition of a singular unit – but it is not reductive. Literal theatricality is embraced and ramped up in the drafting of stage directions, and lighting and effects plots embedded as a part of picture making. As with theatrical scripts, a looped feedback of proposition and account is employed and items are expelled and accumulate around the questions: ‘What is the record?’ ‘What is the thing?’ Within this recursive process motifs appear. Each form, whether it be half a brick, a choral ode, a riddle, a monogram or a rolled butterfly collar, expands on the materiality and mechanisms of the thing itself. The approach is to creep up on it: a form of research by stealth.

Abstract:
In this research, extensive use has been made of limit equilibrium methods of analysis for studying the stability of slopes. For the determination of the factor of safety (FOS) of slopes, the usual two-step process has been adopted; (a) assuming a slip surface for the soil mass, and (b) using the appropriate limit equilibrium equation(s). Eight wellknown limit equilibrium methods have been programmed to calculate different FOS values. The comparative performance of the various analyses has been carried out successfully using case studies. The innovative use of Gauss quadrature to calculate the FOS values has been shown to reducet he iterative sequencesd ramatically with no loss of accuracy. A visco-plastic flow model has been proposed to estimate lateral forces on piles used for slope stabilisation. The present research data occupies an "in-between" position to the previously reported values, with the variation trend being confirmed satisfactorily in all cases. Slope stabilisation due to the presence of a row of piles has been investigated using two distinct lateral load estimations. These include theories of plastic deformation and the proposed visco-plastic flow which are modelled and implemented in a computer program. Eight well-known methods of slope stability analyses have been adopted and computer coded to re-calculate FOS values for a slope reinforced by a row of piles. A Finite Element computer program has been developed to evaluate the displacement, bending moment and shear force along the pile axis. The pile is analysed at two levels above and below the slip failure surface.

Full text
Abstract:
Tailings (mining waste) disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. This creates large volumes of tailings, which must be handled and stored responsibly to avoid potential environmental catastrophes. The most common form of tailings storage facility is the impoundment, where tailings are contained within a basin, with beaches forming around the perimeter of the impoundment and a pond standing in the middle. A relatively new method of tailings storage is to create a 'stack', whereby the tailings solids form a large heap, with the discharge of tailings slurry from the apex of the heap. It is of significant value for mine operators and tailings engineers to be able to predict the shape of the beach that forms in either of these disposal scenarios. The key to being able to do this relies on a method of prediction of the beach slope. The aim of this work is to develop a method of tailings beach slope prediction for tailings slurries that are sub-aerially discharged from a pipe. In this thesis a literature review is undertaken, investigating existing methods for the prediction of tailings beach slopes. These methods are validated against relevant industrial and experimental data. Two separate phases of experimental work have taken place in an effort to investigate tailings deposition behaviour, one at mine sites and the other in a laboratory on a small scale. Three new tailings beach slope prediction models are presented; a simple empirical model enabling quick approximate predictions; an a priori tailings beach slope prediction model based on existing theories of open channel flow, sediment transport and rheology, which is more powerful due to the greater degree of theory in its foundation; and a new semi-empirical model that shares some of the theoretical aspects of the a priori model but offers better predictions due to its empirical calibration to the experimental data. The experimental results, along with 3 other independently collected sets of relevant industrial and experimental data, are used to validate the beach slope prediction models found in the literature, as well as the new beach slope models presented in this thesis. Statistical evaluation of the performance of all of these models is presented to enable comparison. Finally, a new beach shape model is presented for the three dimensional geometric forecasting of the beach surface of a tailings stack. Historic tailings discharge data is run through the beach shape model, and the shapes predicted by the model are compared with aerial survey data of a real tailings stack for validation of the shape model. This work not only presents a new method of tailings stack shape prediction, but also a plausible theory for explaining the concavity of tailings beaches. The stack shape model also has the potential to be developed further for the three dimensional modelling of tailings beaches formed in other types of storage facilities, such as impoundments or valleys.

Franz, Juergen Mining Engineering Faculty of Engineering UNSW. "An investigation of combined failure mechanisms in large scale open pit slopes." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Mining Engineering, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43368.

Full text
Abstract:
Failure mechanisms in large scale open pit slopes are more complex than could be considered through conventional slope design methods. Pit slope behaviour must be predicted accurately, because for very deep open pits, a small change of slope angle can have serious technical and economic consequences. Failure of hard rock slopes often involves both failure along naturally existing weakness planes and failure of intact rock. Without an advanced understanding of combined rock slope failure mechanisms, the validity of commonly applied methods of large scale slope analysis is questionable. The problem was investigated by means of a toolbox approach, in which a wide range of slope stability analysis methods were used and compared to address specific problems arising during slope design optimisation of the Cadia Hill Open Pit, NSW. In particular, numerical modelling is an advanced tool to obtain insight into potential failure mechanisms and to assist the slope design process. The distinct element method was employed to simulate complex rock slope failure, including fracture extension, progressive step-path failure and brittle failure propagation, which were previously often considered unimportant or too difficult to model. A new, failure-scale-dependent concept for the categorisation of slope failures with six categories ranging from 0 (stable) to 5 (overall slope failure) was suggested to assist risk-based slope design. Parametric slope modelling was conducted to determine the interrelationship between proposed categories and critical slope/discontinuity parameters. Initiation and progression of complex slope failure were simulated and described, which resulted in an advanced understanding of combined slope failure mechanisms and the important role of rock bridges in large scale slope stability. A graphical presentation of the suggested slope failure categories demonstrated their interrelationship to varied slope/discontinuity parameters. Although large scale slope analyses will always involve data-limited systems, this investigation shows that comprehensive, conceptual modelling of slope failure mechanisms can deliver a significantly improved insight into slope behaviour, so that associated slope failure risks can be judged with more confidence. The consideration of combined slope failure mechanisms in the analysis of large scale open pit slopes is essential if slope behaviour is to be realistically modelled.
