Abstract:
During the Baroque period in Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia there was a significant development in the creation of spiritual love lyrics. This includes the anonymous song "Vímť já jeden stromeček" ("I know a little tree"), probably of Bohemian origin, which was also spread as a broadside ballad as early as the 17th century. While in Bohemia and Moravia the song entered the folk singing tradition, in Slovakia it was mainly known as a hymn in the church tradition of Slovak Lutherans. This study is devoted to variants of the hymn and its setting in Lutheran manuscript and printed sources in Slova

In the past, the Romani in Slovakia identified with the prevailing religion, mainly with the Roman Catholic Church. However, the missionary activities of various Christian denominations after 1990 resulted in the conversion of the Romani to Pentecostal Christian communities. This launched a long, creative process of the formation of Pentecostal Romani music. Romani believers consider music and the ability to play and sing to be a gift from God and view these as a form of prayer that should serve for the praise of God. That is why many have given up their worldly music making and now play only

This article focuses on a particular controversy that swept through Eastern Slavic Christianity between the 16th and 18th centuries: the so-called “alleluia dispute” (spor ob allilue), i.e. the problem of the performance of the hymn with the triple or double repetition of the Hebrew term ‘alleluia’ before the verse ‘Glory to you, O Lord’. In this debate, one of the contributing voices was that of Maximus the Greek. This study presents and analyzes his short discourse to those who dared to say “alleluia” three times (Slovco k’’ smějuščim’’ triždy glagolati «alliluia» črez predania cerkovnago, a

This chapter by Peter Ruščin is focused on the influence of Czech religious broadside ballads on Slovak religious songs during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ruščin shows that Czech broadside ballads significantly affected the development of Slovak hymnography during this period. This transfer between shared genres of different countries was enabled by the similarities of the two languages, Slovak and Czech, allowing the publication by printing houses of broadside ballads in both languages. Such a transference can be especially seen in the nation’s shared privileging of Marian
